Whenever I conduct a class, there are two books which I give to the couple. The first two were books given to my wife and me when we became engaged. Over the years, I have not found a better set of books to set the tone for lifelong commitment.
For the woman: Letters to Karen by Charles Shedd.
For the man: Letters to Phillip by Charles Shedd
Neither book is very long and they are easy to read. They contain a series of letters that Mr. Shedd wrote to his children prior to their marriage. Many couples read their book and then exchange them to see what advice was given to their future spouse.
There is another story that I think is absolutely essential for any man considering marriage, written by Patricia McGerr and published in Women's Day in November, 1965, it was condensed and republished in Reader's Digest in February, 1988. Numerous sites carry forms of the story, but this one is fairly good: Johnny Lingo's Eight Cow Wife.
