Double Meaning

A statement can be applied to two different things at the same time and both be true.

Psalms 8:4-8

What is man that you take thought of him,
And the son of man that You care for him?
Yet You have made him a little lower than God,
And You crown him with glory and majesty!
You make him to rule over the works of Your hands;
You have put all things under his feet,
All sheep and oxen,
And also the beasts of the field,
The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea,
Whatever passes through the paths of the seas.

“Man” could refer to mankind since men were tasked with caring for God’s creation (Genesis 1:28; Psalms 144:3). But it also refers to Jesus as the Hebrew writer applies it in Hebrews 2:6-9. This is because Jesus took on human form. “The first man is from the earth, earthy; the second man is from heaven” (I Corinthians 15:47).
