How to Study the Bible

An In-Depth Study of the Book of Galatians

Assignment Five

Search for contrasts in the text. Underline the contrasting ideas and place a slash between them.

A frequently repeating idea in Galatians is the word circumcision. It is used not only to represent the physical act, but also to represent those who practice circumcision, the Jewish nation and Christians wanting to live under the Old Law. It is contrasted to uncircumcision, which also represents the non-Jewish nations or Gentiles. Since the common language of the Gentile nations was Greek, Greek is often used as a synonym for Gentile.

Make two lists of all verses in Galatians dealing with circumcision and uncircumcision. This should be fairly easy as your text is already marked to flag these ideas. Besides each verse, write a brief statement that summarizes what the verse says about this topic. The sentence should address the standard questions: Who, What, When, Where, Why, or How.

When you are done, think about how you would organize the ideas presented in order to tell someone else what Paul taught on this subject.
