via Sentry Magazine, Vol. 17 No. 4, 31 December 1991

[Editor’s Note: The following article was written by a professional health-care provider who is a faithful Christian.]

Cachexia is a term used to describe a "physical fading of wholeness" and a "progressive wasting away of the body." Medically, this condition is often found in people who have cancer. Webster’s dictionary states that the word "cachexia" is derived from two Greek words: "kakos" (meaning "bad" or "evil") and "hexis" (meaning "condition"). In the New Testament, we find the word "kakos" several times; two examples are I Timothy 6:10 (the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil) and Romans 12:21 (Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good).

Let us take a few minutes to consider some similarities between cancer Cachexia and spiritual Cachexia. The medical diagnosis of this condition appears to have a rather fuzzy and gray area. There is no universally accepted list of guidelines to determine the initial presence of cancer Cachexia concretely. For example, the diagnosis is not based solely on the amount of weight lost, as this may vary significantly from patient to patient, nor is it based on a decrease in food intake, as this may also vary. Thinking of these facts in the light of spiritual things, isn’t it usually difficult to diagnose or detect the exact beginnings of spiritual Cachexia? A person is not in good spiritual health one day, and in a cachectic state the next. It is almost always a gradual process, a "progressive wasting away."

Another consideration that may be misleading, in both medical and spiritual areas, is the size of the cachexia-causing tumor in relation to the body. The quantity of malignant tissue is often very small compared to the total body weight. Likewise, our greed for money, or love of gossip (or whatever our "tumor" might be) may seem like a very small part of us, compared to all our other good works. But beware — if untreated, this "malignant tissue" will continue to grow and will draw nutrients and energy away from our good works. A small amount of "tumor" can result in a very large amount of "wasting away."

Cachexia has been defined as an imbalance between the energy required and the energy available for use. Good works require spiritual energies, which in turn come from keeping our minds on things above, putting God first, and feasting on His word (Psalms 107:9 and Matthew 5:6). If we fail to do these things, our energy level is decreased, our good works cease, and our lights grow dim. Have you recently assessed your spiritual energy level?

There are several causes of cancer Cachexia, some known, some unknown. One major cause is a spontaneous decline in oral intake. Factors associated with this decrease in appetite are many: pain; depression,; anxiety; and worries about finances, about family, and about body image. Likewise, many things can cause a decline in our intake of the Bread of Life, the food which endures to eternal life (John 61:27). Worries and concerns of this world are endless, and if we let them, they will choke us. Are you giving your spiritual diet as much time and thought as you are your physical diet?

Another problem with Cachexia is that even with adequate intake of food, often there exists an abnormal utilization of food products. The body is not functioning correctly, and absorption is either reduced or nonexistent. Also, some studies show that many cancer patients experience taste changes and develop food aversions. This is easy to apply to the spiritual realm—easy, but sad and sobering. Evidently, the Galatians were experiencing a change in taste and were instructed by Paul to return to the true Gospel of Christ (Galatians 1:6).

A frightening fact about the diagnosis of Cachexia is that since this condition is not always the result of inadequate eating, improving nutritional intake often does not reverse Cachexia; the primary cause must first be eliminated. The primary cause may be a combination of factors that contribute to the total disease process. On the spiritual side, many factors can be identified as primary causes of the spiritual decline of souls. I John 2:15-17 names the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life. Unless these are eliminated, the mere action of attending worship or reading words on pages of the Bible cannot reverse the Cachetic state. Matthew quotes Isaiah and tells of people who worship God but whose hearts are far from Him (Matthew 15:8).

Cancer Cachexia is different from starvation or protein and calorie malnutrition. With these, the body employs adaptive compensatory mechanisms to maintain balance. For example, during starvation, the body decreases its metabolic rate, resulting in less energy and, consequently, less food being needed. Another natural compensatory mechanism is found in pregnancy: the fetus utilizes nutrients from the mother, and God, in His great wisdom, provided for this by an increase in the mother’s total blood volume of about 50%. But with malignancies, nutrients are taken from the body by the tumor with no provision of replacement. Satan certainly does not provide for the replacement of nourishment either, when he draws from our total store of spiritual energy.

Two other processes that Cachexia impairs are wound healing and immune functioning. The mechanisms in the body that normally would not bother us can cause grave illness or even death. It is difficult, sometimes impossible, to resist the devil and flee from him when our souls are immunosuppressed, in other words, when we have not put on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18). Also, our spiritual wounds inflicted by Satan remain unhealed and begin to fester and can result in death - the death of our souls.

Cachexia causes fatigue and apathy, which in turn leads to an inability to work or take part in normal family and social life. An endless cycle can develop as a person starts to feel unworthy and inadequate; depression leads to further decrease in appetite and utilization of food, and the Cachetic circle spins away. A Christian who gradually spends less and less time in Bible study, less time associating with other Christians, and less time in worship and prayer. The Cachetic person begins to feel apathetic and unworthy. As stated before, the changes in cancer Cachexia and spiritual Cachexia occur over time, sometimes very subtly. Assess your spiritual life for these warning signs: loss of appetite for the Word, unusual weakness, muscle atrophy, decreased tolerance for Work, decline in attention span, and reduced concentration abilities (especially in prayer). Paul instructs us to examine, to test, ourselves to see if we are in the faith (II Corinthians 13:5).

The bottom line: if cancer Cachexia is not reversed, physical death occurs; if spiritual Cachexia is not reversed, spiritual death occurs. Remember, it can be reversed only by eliminating the primary cause.

Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might (Ephesians 6:10). David, Moses, Isaiah, Habbakuk, and others declared God to be their strength (Psalms 18:1-2; Exodus 15:2; Isaiah 12:2; Habakkuk 3:19). Is He your strength?

“And the LORD said to Moses, “Is the LORD’s arm shortened? Now you shall see whether my word will come true for you or not” (Numbers 11:23).

Moses had led the masses of Israelites into the wilderness. After a year of living outside of Egypt, the people began to complain about the lack of meat in their diet and longed for Egypt. God promised to provide meat for a month until it came out of their noses. Moses questioned God about where enough meat for all of these people could come from.

God asks Moses, “Is the Lord’s arm shortened?” Meaning, is God unable to help or fulfill His promises? Moses should have known. After the plagues, crossing the Red Sea, and feeding the multitudes with manna every day for a year, Moses should have known that God could do anything He desired.

When the sky grows dark and we are called to walk into the wilderness of the unknown, we can begin to wonder how God will accomplish His purposes. But just because we are shortsighted does not mean that God is short-armed. We ought to know that God can accomplish anything He purposes. With a strong and mighty arm, God calls and saves His people.

via Sentry Magazine, Vol. 16 No. 3, September 30, 1990

Christians need much more strength than those who make no pretense of serving the Lord. The life Christians are called on to live is not the easiest life. While it offers the greatest rewards and provides the greatest blessings here and hereafter, Jesus said it is the "strait way" with the "narrow gate" that leads to life. (Matthew 7:13-14). The word "strait" is translated by "difficult" or "narrow" in more recent translations. You might imagine a mountain climber who must pass through narrow clefts of rocks, pull himself upward toward the top, and know why strength is important to those who want to reach the top.

The illustration is not too good, for God does not expect us to pull ourselves to the top without His help. But we cannot expect God to pull us to the top when we make little effort. God promises us that He will strengthen us. Paul wrote, "That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might through his spirit in the inner man" (Ephesians 3:16). But, in the same epistle, Paul urged Christians to, "...be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might" (Ephesians 6:19). Strength comes from God. Still, we have to avail ourselves of it. And the question remains: How do I do that?

Some basic rules must be followed to become a stronger Christian. This is true of anything worth doing or getting, or a Christian can become stronger.

Let’s consider some of them.

Develop resistance against sin.

Recognize what sin is, and know that it is the main thing that saps strength from a Christian. Christians can and do sin, tragically. Those who refuse to correct their sins become weaker and weaker the older they get. Notice Peter’s statement. "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world" (I Peter 5:8-9). Weaklings are gobbled up by Satan like babes at the mercy of a vicious, wild, ravenous lion on the loose. The more sin and Satan are resisted, the stronger the Christian becomes.

Cultivate a desire to serve God.

It does not seem to be the "natural" thing for a human being to want to serve God faithfully. That seems to require cultivation. It may be like learning to eat or drink some nourishing food that initially did not taste good. But every one of God’s children can learn the sweet taste of faithful and loyal service. Study this next verse thoughtfully. "It is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift...and have tasted the good word of God..." (Hebrews 6:4-5). These expressions are lifted from the text deliberately to focus attention on them. The taste may have been less than appealing initially, but the longer one serves the Lord, the sweeter the experience becomes. Never making the effort often keeps people from great enjoyment. There is a song that describes it well and is "sweeter as the years go by."

Engage in exercise.

Athletes and others who want strength make it a regular practice to exercise. I am told that irregular exercise is the same as no exercise, if not worse. Paul wrote the young preacher, Timothy, as follows. "For bodily exercise profits a little, but Godliness is profitable for all things, ’having the promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come." (I Timothy 4:8). A practical way to exercise is to establish the habit of regular Bible study, a special time for prayer and the routine of attending Bible studies and worship. Those who have done this become markedly stronger in Christ.

One final thing to consider is that we need to know what we need to strengthen. Some may need to strengthen their ability to control their temper, while others need to strengthen their resistance to temptation. Whatever the weakness, the rules studied in this lesson will work when taken seriously and applied.

by Bill Hall

We should be thankful for wonderful examples of courage that spur us on to greater strength in the Lord's service.

Paul was just such an example: “And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear” (Philippians 1:14). These brethren, formerly timid and reticent, were drawing strength from the courage of Paul.

Other examples abound. Stephen’s plea, “Lord, lay not this sin to their charge,” surely had for its source of strength the forgiving spirit of the Lord (Acts 7:60). The Thessalonian church found a source of strength in the example of the churches in Judea (I Thessalonians 2:14). The Philippian church, a model of courage and conviction, could no doubt trace much of its strength back to the wonderful example of patience and equanimity demonstrated by Paul and Silas while in their midst. The Hebrew Christians were admonished to “remember them that had the rule over you, men that spake unto you the word of God; and considering the issue of their life, imitate their faith” (Hebrews 13:7).

Christians of this generation are similarly drawing strength from the courage of others.

Young men who refuse to miss services of the church to play on a ball team;

young women who refuse to be seen in public in scanty attire;

businessmen who would lose their jobs rather than compromise their convictions;

women who continue to adorn themselves in “meek and quiet spirits” whatever the sophisticated world thinks or says of them;

sick people who bear their afflictions with patience and faith;

elderly people who continue to attend worship when they are hardly able to go anywhere else;

dying people who demonstrate how Christians ought to die;

All are sources of strength and courage for others facing similar circumstances. They share a common spirit with the great characters of the Bible: They see in their temptations, trials, afflictions, and persecutions a special opportunity to be like Christ, to demonstrate their fidelity to Him, and to provide a source of strength for those who might be weak and wavering around them. They seize the opportunity and stand, and we all are stronger because of them. Of these courageous people, this world truly is not worthy.

Are we, however, to be always on the receiving end of the strength of others? As we draw strength from the courage of others, we must, in turn, become sources of strength and courage. Others look to us. Each of us has a “charge to keep,” “God to glorify,” and “a present age to serve.”

"He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name" (Revelation 3:12).

This seems to be a reminder that though the earthly temple in Jerusalem was to be destroyed with not one stone left upon another (Matthew 24), still there is the far greater temple (Ephesians 2:19f) that Jesus built, and the “spiritual stones” that compose this temple are the dedicated Christians (I Peter 2:3-9). We are “living stones” that build up a far greater spiritual house.

In this spiritual temple, Jesus can mark us out for high honors, like the “pillar” of the earthly temple was notable. West observes, “According to I Kings 7:21, there were two pillars in Solomon’s Temple named Jachin (“He shall establish”), and Boaz (“In Him is strength”). To be a pillar in the Temple of the living God is to enjoy the state of being made, by the grace of God, spiritually established and strong.“ [p.219]. This means you could be honored as a very stabilizing force in God’s house.

The pillars of the earthly temple “went out” when Nebuchadnezzar took them out in 586 BC and would soon be likewise taken down and out in AD 70 by the Romans, but in God’s spiritual temple, we can be such pillars as “shall go out no more.” This “New Jerusalem,” in contrast to the old, earthly Jerusalem, is from heaven, not the earth, and such that no man can invade it and take away its honorable stones of living faith.

The High Priest alone wore the holy crown with a headband with these words “Holiness to the Lord” (Exodus 39:30). But every Christian has a chance to have written across his forehead “My new name”. That is the honorable new name for you. Barnabas was given the name “Son of Encouragement” by the disciples. He had formerly been known as Joses (Acts 4:36). What a wonderful honor the brethren wrote across his face, so to speak! But when God counts us as very special instruments of strength and stability in the church, what special name would be our designation from Him? That is a wonderfully encouraging thought!

You can be God’s pillar, a Jachin (established and stable), or a Boaz (a source of “strength” for the brethren because you committed yourself to be an “overcomer” of apathy and discouragement). Are you an overcomer? What position in God’s New Jerusalem spiritual temple do you occupy at present? Do you represent the reputation of strength and stability? Or weakness and instability? What would it take to be an “overcomer?”

Let us have ears to hear what the Spirit is trying to get us to think about and become!
