The March/April 1994 edition of the Biblical Archaeology Review (Vol. 20, No.2) reported the following:

“It’s not often that an archaeological find makes the front page of the New York Times (to say nothing of Time magazine. But that is what happened last summer to a discovery at Tel Dan, a beautiful mound in northern Galilee, at the foot of Mt. Hermon beside one of the headwaters of the Jordan River.

“There Abraham Biran and his team of archaeologists found a remarkable inscription from the ninth century B.C.E. that refers both to the “House of David” and to the “King of Israel.” This is the first time that the name David has been found in any ancient inscription outside the Bible. That the inscription refers not simply to a “David” but to the House of David, the dynasty of the great Israelite king, is even more remarkable...”

The inscription was found on a piece of basalt that appeared to have been part of a large monumental inscription. The letters were found to be “clearly engraved and easy to read. The script is in Old Hebrew letters, sometimes called paleo-Hebrew, the kind of letters used before the Babylonian destruction of the First Temple in 586 B.C.E. When the Jews returned from the Babylonian exile, they brought back the square Aramaic script still used today. Dots separate the words, as was then customary...where “House of David” appears, however, the two Hebrew words bytdwd are not separated by a dot, but written together, like HouseofDavid. The dynastic name of the kingdom of Judah, whose founder was King David, was apparently regarded as one word.”

The archaeologists concluded that the basalt piece containing the inscription was “a victory stela erected in Dan by an Aramean, a devotee of Hadad. who is boasting of his military victory over Israel and perhaps also Judah.”

The Dead Sea Scrolls are a collection of 980 Hebrew documents found in the Qumran limestone caves between 1947 and 2017. Most of the texts are written on parchment. About 40% were copies from the Old Testament. Before the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the oldest Hebrew-language manuscripts of the Bible were Masoretic texts dating to the 10th century AD, such as the Aleppo Codex. The biblical manuscripts found among the Dead Sea Scrolls push that date back over one thousand years. The Dead Sea Scrolls have demonstrated that the Old Testament was accurately transmitted during this interval. This indicates that the Old Testament we have today is a very accurate copy of the Old Testament's original text (autograph).

This means no large-scale changes happened to the Bible, as previously surmised. The reliability of the Bible keeps being verified and supported by what is discovered in the ground, which preserves the truth of the past. A visit to the Museum in Jerusalem shows the remarkable display as one of the most important finds in history. Further, the Isaiah scroll shows that it was not tampered with to make it sound like Isaiah 53 fits Jesus. These scrolls were preserved from before Jesus to no more than 40 years after Jesus left Earth. It was too early for men to alter the texts to make them sound favorable to the doctrine of atonement by a special Servant of God instead of the usual animal sacrificial ways of the Law. A Servant was being “bruised for our iniquity,” and that was there in the Jewish Bible before Jesus and Christianity ever came on the scene. That is “the arm of the Lord” and the scrolls verify the amazing plan of God Almighty!

"One of the most striking findings was the removal of key features that defined Durene houses, such as the building’s cistern and food preparation area. These elements were essential for daily life in a home, and their absence suggests the structure was no longer meant to function as a residence. The researchers also discovered unique architectural elements, like low-level windows, that were not found in other domestic structures in the city."

"These findings challenge the idea that early Christian worship spaces were simply houses with minor modifications. Instead, they suggest a more deliberate and significant transformation of space, possibly indicating a desire by early Christians to create distinct, recognizable places of worship within their communities."

"It suggests that rather than following a universal pattern, early Christians may have been more influenced by local architectural traditions and may have been more intentional in creating spaces that stood apart from typical domestic structures."

Answer:

Isn't it amazing that people will cite historical documents and accept that someone like Julius Caesar or Sargon existed, but the Bible is skipped even though it is an ancient document? Now, if you are asking what additional proof there is of Solomon, we still can list a few.

Documents in the past were written on scrolls and sealed with a piece of clay stamped with the author's unique seal. Fires often destroy buildings that contain the scrolls, but the same heat bakes the clay seals turning them into pottery that are called bullae. In a small town in Israel, a number of bullae have been found dating to the 10th century B.C., showing that an extensive government operation existed during the period that Solomon lived. ["Discovery of official clay seals support existence of biblical kings David and Solomon, archaeologists say," Science Daily, 16 December 2014].

"Now this is the account of the forced labor which King Solomon levied to build the house of the LORD, his own house, the Millo, the wall of Jerusalem, Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer. For Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up and captured Gezer and burned it with fire, and killed the Canaanites who lived in the city, and had given it as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon's wife. So Solomon rebuilt Gezer and the lower Beth-horon and Baalath and Tamar in the wilderness, in the land of Judah, and all the storage cities which Solomon had, even the cities for his chariots and the cities for his horsemen, and all that it pleased Solomon to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in all the land under his rule" (I Kings 9:15-19).

"Archaeologists discovered similar building features at these three cities [Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer] that conclusively date their construction to the 10th century BC; this is of tremendous importance for demonstrating the historical accuracy of the Biblical account of Solomon’s building projects. Archeologists discovered that each of these three cities built during the Solomonic period shared the same building features." [Sebastian Kettley, "'Confirms Bible account' Archaeology discoveries back King Solomon's reign, scholar claims," Express, 20 August 2020].

"Between 1957 CE and 1971 CE, archaeologist Yigael Yadin began excavations at two of the three cities mentioned in 1 Kings 9 (fully at Hazor and in a cursory investigation at Megiddo), which had gates supposedly built by King Solomon c. 960 BCE. Based on compared archaeological evidence from all three sites, which included Macalister's excavation report at Gezer from 1902–09 CE, Yadin concluded that the three city gates were designed by the same engineer (based on the same structural dimensions), built by the same workers (stylistically and methodologically from Phoenicia), and utilized the same material (they contained ashlar masonry quarried in Tyre). Additionally, in the 1860s CE, Charles Warren discovered a wall and courtyard in Jerusalem that were later found to be identical to the one in Megiddo and dating from the period of King Solomon." [John S. Knox, "Solomon", Ancient History Encyclopedia, 25 January 2017].

An extensive mining operation in Timna, dating to the time of Solomon's reign has been found [Philippe Bohstrom, "Did David and Solomon's United Monarchy Exist? Vast Ancient Mining Operation May Hold Answers," Haaretz, 21 November 2017].

Hi Jeff,

Today a co-worker and I were discussing Ron Wyatt's discovery of the ark of the covenant and when the earth shook, whether it was before Jesus said "it is finished" or after. How could Ron Wyatt be so spot on with archeological discoveries? (Rhetorical question.)

I found the article on the church's website regarding "The Crossing of the Red Sea" to help clear up some of the questions I had regarding the crossing of the Red Sea discovery and Ron Wyatt.

My co-worker stated that Mr. Wyatt found the ark of the covenant. It was found buried in a cave under Golgotha, directly under the place where Jesus was crucified. Once the earth shook, the blood from the cross made its way under the ground and into this cave to the ark. When the blood hit the ark, Jesus stated: "It is finished." This statement gave my co-worker chills, and he was telling other coworkers the same story.

I was left speechless with this story and not with chills. I asked "where are the pictures and why haven't they brought it up into the light for everyone to see? He said, "They are on YouTube. Do you remember the last time someone tried to touch the ark? Currently, priests are being trained to bring the Ark up for everyone to see."

I also pointed out that the earth shook after the events of Jesus saying "It is finished" (Matthew 27:50-54). He said he needed to look at that again but either way, Jesus's blood got to the ark which was buried under Golgotha. My immediate thought after he left my desk was, "How could you miss the whole book of Hebrews?"

My question to you, Jeff, is have you come across this discussion previously or heard the same story? What are your thoughts on counteracting this?

Thank you,

Answer:

"He who speaks truth tells what is right, but a false witness, deceit" (Proverbs 12:17).

It would seem obvious, but Solomon makes an important point that many people miss. Truthful people tend to tell the truth consistently. Liars tend to tell more lies.

While researching your question, I found that Ron Wyatt has been involved in many fraudulent archaeological claims. He has claimed to have discovered:

Wyatt claimed to have found the Ark of the Covenant in 1982, located in an underground maze beneath Jerusalem.

The tablets of the Ten Commandments, bound by golden hinges. A friend of Wyatt claims to have them in his garage and will bring them out when the time is right. (Really?)

The real site of the crucifixion, apparently above the cave containing the Ark of the Covenant, so that Christ’s blood would drip onto the Mercy Seat.

An actual sample of Christ’s blood, with chromosomes allegedly still visible under the microscope, showing that there was no human father. He said it contained 24 chromosomes - 23 from Mary and 1 from God instead of the normal 46 chromosomes that humans have. Placed in a growth medium, the cells began dividing, says Ron.

Where the Israelites crossed the Red Sea through the Gulf of Aqaba.

Chariot wheels and other relics from Pharaoh’s drowned army at the bottom of the Red Sea. Not surprisingly, no relic has ever been made available for analysis. There is a Jonathan Gray video purporting to show these at the bottom of the Red Sea. In one part, Gray claims that a “British Admiralty chart” he is holding shows a “sand bridge” with great depths on either side. The problem is that the British Ministry of Defense has identified the chart as being produced by the United States, and that there is no sand bridge on the chart or on the British charts of the area. The Ministry also said, "The naturally lit video footage of the sea floor could not possibly have been filmed anywhere near the spot claimed by Gray, as insufficient light would penetrate at that depth." But no problem, Wyatt and Gray then claimed that the British Ministry of Defense had vindicated their claims and showed a heavily edited version of their rebuttal.

Wyatt claims the real Mt Sinai is in Saudi Arabia

He claims to have found the rock that was split at Horeb.

Another claim is that he found the true site of Korah’s earthquake.

Wyatt also claimed to have found the location of Sodom and Gomorrah, with building outlines still standing as piles of sulfur-fried ash. Analysis of samples sent to a lab concluded that they "were not consistent with what would be expected from incinerated ancient buildings, or rock ash of any sort. Instead, they clearly indicated an [evaporite] deposit of gypsum-type minerals."

He claimed to have found Noah’s Ark 1992. Dr. John Baumgardner, a geophysist, analyzed the site and concluded that it was a natural formation and not the remains of Noah's ark. [D.F. Fasold, “Bogus ‘Noah’s Ark’ from Turkey exposed as a common geologic structure,” Journal of Geoscience Education 44:439–444, 1996.]

He also said he found the anchor stones used on the ark. "Wyatt has argued that the standing stones he has found are anchors, while Terian is aware of similar stones outside the Durupinar site area that were pagan cultic stones later converted by Christians for Christian purposes."

Even more amazing, he said he found Noah’s house, and the graves of Noah and his wife, together with millions of dollars worth of her jewelry. Wyatt claims they were then stolen from him (how inconvenient).

Wyatt claims the site of the Tower of Babel is in southern Turkey.

The evidence is strong that Wyatt was nothing more than a sensationalist who used his claims as a money-making operation. In a 1997 interview, Dr. John Baumgardner stated, "that Wyatt’s claims about himself were as 'bogus' as Wyatt’s claims about the 'Ark site'" ["Has the Ark of the Covenant Been Found?" Answers in Genesis, 1 March 1999]. Gary Amirault, who has accumulated evidence of fraud against Ron Wyatt and his foundation known as Wyatt Archaeological Research (WAR), stated, "I will tell you enough here to hopefully convince you WAR is a Christian con game. Ron Wyatt is either very psychologically ill or one of the greatest liars I have ever come across" ["A Great Christian Scam," Tentmaker, February 2013].

Regarding the Ark of the Covenant, the following quote is actually found on a Wyatt supporting website:

"The Council of the Garden Tomb Association (London) totally refute the claim of Wyatt to have discovered the original Ark of the Covenant or any other biblical artifacts within the boundaries of the area known as the Garden Tomb Jerusalem. Though Wyatt was allowed to dig within this privately owned garden on a number of occasions (the last occasion being the summer of 1991) staff members of the Association observed his progress and entered his excavated shaft. As far as we are aware nothing was ever discovered to support his claims nor have we seen any evidence of biblical artifacts or temple treasures." ["Update: Ark of the Covenant," Anchor Stone International, 28 March 1999.]

Instead of being concerned about the conclusion, the supporters quote this to say, "See! He was there!" Humorously, the update concludes: "Hopefully very soon, but at the time appointed by God, the Ark of the Covenant will be revealed to the world, and the tablets of stone with God’s law written on them by His own finger, will be put on display. Then the world will know that there is still a God in Israel." It is now 21 years later, with no trace of the alleged find to be shown.

One group speculates that Wyatt might have found an ossuary, a burial box. ["Other Views: Ron Wyatt," Institute for Biblical & Scientific Studies, 28 January 2020.]

There is a book called Holy Relics or Revelation by Russell R. Standish and Colin D. Standish, published in 1999, that gives detailed, documented proof that Ron Wyatt's claimed discoveries were bogus.

Sadly, Wyatt's claims are still widely followed despite evidence that he was a fraud. "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths" (II Timothy 4:3-4).

Today we will discuss a rather large archaeological discovery. It is the Lachish Reliefs from the palace of Sennacherib which were unearthed between 1845 and 1847. Sennacherib was the king of Assyria from 705-681 BC and his reign largely overlapped the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah. During this period, the kings of Assyria had to deal with several revolts around the Empire, mainly from Babylon which was under the leadership of Merodach-Baladan. In 703 BC Sennacherib conquered the Babylonians, then turned to the western part of the Empire to put down problems that have arisen in Judah in 701 BC.

Sennacherib attacked the fortified cities in the northern and western areas of Judea first (II Kings 18:14; II Chronicles 32:1; Isaiah 36:1). His final aim in taking the nation of Judah would be to take Jerusalem, the capital of Judah, and its largest city. Jerusalem was over six times as large as Lachish, with Jerusalem measuring about 125 acres and Lachish only about 20 acres. Sennacherib sends messengers to Hezekiah in Jerusalem to surrender (II Kings 18:17-37; II Chronicles 32:9-19; Isaiah 36:2-22). Hezekiah went to God in prayer for deliverance and was delivered. The Scriptures records that God responded to Hezekiah’s prayer with the words, “Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city or shoot an arrow there, or come before it with a shield or cast up a siege mound against it” (II Kings 19:32). The Bible records for us this in II Kings 19:35, “And that night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.” This verse is virtually repeated in Isaiah 37:36. II Chronicles records the event this way, “And the LORD sent an angel who destroyed every mighty warrior, commander, and officer in the camp of the king of Assyria” (II Chronicles 32:21) Sennacherib retreated to Nineveh, his capital, without the satisfaction of taking the city of Jerusalem.

Interestingly, that is exactly what we see that Sennacherib has sought to immortalize on the walls of his palace in the Lachish Reliefs. These are about 40 feet long and 16.5 feet high relief carvings of the siege and plunder of the Judean city of Lachish in 701 BC. There can be little doubt that, had Sennacherib not been thwarted by God when preparing to take Jerusalem, these carvings would have been a depiction of the taking of Judah’s capital of Jerusalem. Today, they are housed at the British Museum.

A related artifact, Sennacherib’s Annals, recorded on three different “prisms”, records a list of his victories over different rebellious rulers. They are the Taylor Prism, found by Robert Taylor in 1830 at Nineveh and now housed at the British Museum, the Jerusalem Prism, which was acquired in 1970 by the Israel Museum, and the Oriental Institute Prism, purchased from a Baghdad antique dealer for the Oriental Institute in Chicago in 1919. Each prism records the same text and was likely posted in different cities in a public area and served as propaganda to support the might of the Assyrian Monarch.

Of particular interest is what is stated about the “defeat” of Hezekiah, king of Judah. It says, “As for the king of Judah, Hezekiah, who had not submitted to my authority, I besieged and captured forty-six of his fortified cities, along with many smaller towns, taken in battle with my battering rams. ... I took as plunder 200,150 people, both small and great, male and female, along with a great number of animals including horses, mules, donkeys, camels, oxen, and sheep. As for Hezekiah, I shut him up like a caged bird in his royal city of Jerusalem. I then constructed a series of fortresses around him, and I did not allow anyone to come out of the city gates. His towns which I captured I gave to the kings of Ashod, Ekron, and Gaza." (Luckenbill)

Archaeology is a very helpful tool in establishing the existence of a place, ruler, or event. It becomes of increased interest to us when these discoveries shed light on a biblical place, figure, or event. The past three articles here have focused on those types of discoveries. The remains of the Hittite city of Hattusa confirms the existence of the Hittites, which the Bible records. The Kurkh Monoliths and Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III both record the outcome of battles at the end of the ninth century BC.

Some discoveries can enlighten us on chronologies where confusion may have reigned before. The Exodus of the Children of Israel from Egyptian bondage is one such event. Those interested in establishing a date for the Exodus have classically been divided between two dates: the mid-fifteenth century BC and the early twelfth century BC. Most scholars have taken the twelfth century BC date as the most likely. This is probably due to the name Raamses being used in the Bible. Exodus 1:11 says, “And they built for Pharaoh storage cities, Pithom and Raamses.” A lesser-known verse in Genesis 47:11 says, “So Joseph settled his father and his brothers and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had ordered.”

The mention of Raamses, or Rameses, is evidence to some that Ramesses II was the Pharaoh of the Exodus. Ramesses II ruled Egypt from 1279-1213 BC according to scholars. If Moses was born in 1279 (the first year of Ramesses reign), then the year of Moses' flight to Midian would have been 1239 BC. After this, he would have stayed forty years in Midian then returned to Egypt to lead the people out of bondage. The year that the Exodus began would be 1199 BC, which would be after Ramesses II was dead. So, the twelfth century BC date for the Exodus is problematic if taken only because of the name “Raamses” being used in the Biblical text. The name must have either been used as a reference to some other ruler with this name. It may also have been called by these names as a descriptor of the area when the books were being written, i.e. they were called one thing during the days of the events and are now called Raamses.

Calculating a date for the Exodus is something that is possible from the biblical text. One clue is to look at I Kings 6:1, “Now it came about in the four hundred and eightieth year after the sons of Israel came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the LORD.” This passage speaks of the building of the Temple in the days of Solomon but holds a clue by which the Exodus of the Children of Israel from Egypt can be dated. The fourth year of Solomon’s reign was 480 years after the Exodus. Now we simply have to find a date for Solomon’s reign and count backward. According to scholars, King David ruled from 1010-970 BC. This means that Solomon would have ruled from 970-930 BC, with the fourth year of his reign being 966 BC. When 480 years are counted back from 966 BC, the year 1,446 BC is established as the year of the Exodus.

This brings us to the archaeological discovery of the day, the Merneptah Stele, which casts major doubt on the twelfth century BC date for the Exodus. Pharaoh Merneptah was the ruler of Egypt from 1213-1203 BC. He led Egypt in several battles against the people of the Levant. The Merneptah Stele lists the Egyptian victories. The lines of the stele in hieroglyphics read:

The princes are prostrate, saying, "Peace!"
Not one is raising his head among the Nine Bows.
Now that Tehenu (Libya) has come to ruin,
Hatti is pacified;
The Canaan has been plundered into every sort of woe:
Ashkelon has been overcome;
Gezer has been captured;
Yano'am is made non-existent.
Israel is laid waste and his seed is not;
Hurru is become a widow because of Egypt. [Sparks]

In the stele, Israel is referred to alongside such nations as Libya, Hatti, Ashkelon, and Gezer. It is an established nation that has been “laid waste” by Egypt. Yet, according to the calculations at the outset, the Israelites would have exited Egypt in 1199 BC. Even if Ramsses II was taken to be the Pharaoh of the Exodus, and the Israelites exited Egypt in 1240 BC, they wandered in the wilderness for forty years which would have been just past the time of the conquering referred to in the Merneptah Stele. However, if we take the early date for the Exodus of 1446 BC, there is no problem. Merneptah would have “laid waste” to Israel sometime during the Judges.

The stele was discovered in 1896 at the city of Thebes by archaeologist Flinders Petrie. It is a granite slab with a height of about 10 feet. It is housed at the Egypt Museum in Cairo.

To see a Biblical figure referenced in a stone inscription is a beautiful thing. It testifies that the book which we revere and study from is a trustworthy historical document and based in reality. Sometimes the secular inscriptions can reveal details of the Biblical figure’s life that aren’t included in the Biblical narrative. Today we will discuss one such monument which records the exploits of King Ahab of Israel, the Kurkh Monoliths.

Stele of Shalmaneser III (Kurkh Monolith)

There are two steles which are under consideration as the Kurkh Monoliths, both of which record the military campaigns of Assyrian Rulers of the late ninth century B.C., Ashurnasirpal II (883-859 BC) and Shalmaneser III (859-824 BC). At the time they ruled, the Assyrian Empire was seeking to establish dominance over the region of the upper Levant (Syria) to gain a foothold on the Mediterranean coast. It was Shalmaneser’s march that was met by fierce opposition in the region north of the Bible lands. Several of the local, smaller kingdoms made an alliance to oppose the march of the Assyrian monarch. Among the opposition was Israel under the leadership of Ahab. The stele records the famous Battle of Qarqar of 853 BC and the opposition that was mounted against Shalmaneser’s war machine. Daniel Luckenbill translated the inscription this way,

“To Karkar I drew near. Karkar, his royal city, I destroyed, I devastated, I burned with fire. 1,200 chariots, I,200 cavalry, 20,000 soldiers, of Hadad-ezer, of Aram (? Damascus); 700 chariots, 700 cavalry, 10,000* soldiers of Irhulêni of Hamath, 2,000 chariots, 10,000 soldiers of Ahab, the Israelite, 500 soldiers of the Gueans, 1,000 soldiers of the Musreans, 10 chariots, 10,000 soldiers of the Irkanateans, 200 soldiers of Matinuba'il, the Arvadite, 200 soldiers of the Usanateans, 30 chariots, [ ],000 soldiers of Adunu-ba'il, the Shianean, 1,000 camels of Gindibu', the Arabian, [ ],000 soldiers [of] Ba'sa, son of Ruhubi, the Ammonite, - these twelve kings he brought to his support; to offer battle and fight, they came against me. (Trusting) in the exalted might which Assur, the lord, had given (me), in the mighty weapons, which Nergal, who goes before me, had presented (to me), I battled with them. From Karkar, as far as the city of Gilzau, I routed them. 14,000 of their warriors I slew with the sword. Like Adad, I rained destruction upon them. I scattered their corpses far and wide, (and) covered (lit.., filled) the face of the desolate plain with their widespreading armies. With (my) weapons I made their blood to flow down the valleys(?) of the land. The plain was too small to let their bodies fall, the wide countryside was used up in burying them. With their bodies I spanned the Arantu (Orotes) as with a bridge(?). In that battle I took from them their chariots, their cavalry, their horses, broken to the yoke. (*Possibly 20,000).” (Luckenbill)

The Battle of Qarqar is not recorded in the Bible, but there is certainly a great deal about King Ahab of Israel. He reigned from 871-852 BC, a reign which would certainly have encompassed the Battle of Qarqar. Ahab is described as a wicked king who, along with his wife Jezebel, instituted Baal worship in the northern kingdom of Israel. His story in the Bible is recorded in II Kings 16:29-22:40 and II Chronicles 18.

The alliance he joined kept the Assyrians at bay for a time, but Israel was put under tribute during the reign of its next king, Jehu, which is recorded on an archaeological find known as the Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III.

The steles were discovered in 1861 in the town of Kurkh in Turkey. They are now housed at the British Museum in London.
