{"id":98774,"date":"2026-10-28T15:13:46","date_gmt":"2026-10-28T20:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/?p=98774"},"modified":"2026-10-28T15:13:46","modified_gmt":"2026-10-28T20:13:46","slug":"jesus-is-the-son-of-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/jesus-is-the-son-of-god\/","title":{"rendered":"Jesus Is the Son of God"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<p>by Hugh DeLong<\/p>\n<p>John closed his gospel: &#8220;<em>Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name<\/em>&#8221; (John 20:30-31).<\/p>\n<p>One of those signs was the healing of the lame man in John 5. Such signs were often accompanied by an &#8216;explanation&#8217; of what the sign pointed <strong>to<\/strong>. This sign pointed to the fact that Jesus was the Son of God.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Jews of that day understood this phrase to indicate that He was claiming to be equal with the Father (John 5:18). Jesus could have easily corrected their &#8216;misunderstanding,&#8217; but instead of such correction, Jesus went on to give specific concepts that <strong>prove <\/strong>they were right in their understanding of the phrase but <strong>wrong <\/strong>in their perception of who Jesus really was. He was <strong>not <\/strong>a liar and blasphemer, but rather, He <strong>was <\/strong>(<strong>is<\/strong>) the Son of God and thus equal to God.<\/p>\n<p>What proof can He offer that He is equal with the Father?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He can do <strong>whatever <\/strong>the Father does (John 5:19).<\/li>\n<li>He can raise the physically dead (John 5:21).<\/li>\n<li>He is the judge of all men (John 5:22).<\/li>\n<li>He is to be honored <strong>even as<\/strong> the Father (John 5:23).<\/li>\n<li>He gives <strong>eternal life<\/strong> to those who trust Him (John 5:24-25).<\/li>\n<li>He has life within himself (John 5:26).<\/li>\n<li>He <strong>will <\/strong>raise and judge all men (John 5:28-29).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Jews understood that all such testimony needed two or three witnesses, not just\u00a0<strong>one\u00a0<\/strong>man&#8217;s word\u00a0(cp. Deuteronomy 19:15; Matthew 18:16; John 8:17; II Corinthians 13:1; I Timothy 5:19; and Hebrews 10:28). What witnesses could Jesus claim?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Himself (John 5:31-32)<\/li>\n<li>John the Baptist (John 5:33 &#8211; reread John&#8217;s testimony in chapters 1 and 2!)<\/li>\n<li>The very miracles and signs such as this healing of the lame man, gave testimony to this truth (John 5:36)<\/li>\n<li>The Father gave witness to this truth (John 5:37)<\/li>\n<li>The scriptures that they read gave witness (John 5:39)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even with such abundance of testimony, these people rejected Jesus and his claim! Why? <strong>Not <\/strong>for lack of evidence, but because they were <strong>unwilling <\/strong>(John 5:40); they did <strong>not <\/strong>have the word abiding in their hearts (John 5:38); they did not truly love God (John 5:42); they sought glory from men rather than God (John 5:44); they, despite their claim, did <strong>not <\/strong>believe in the writings of Moses (John 5:46-47).<\/p>\n<p>We now have the same claim to deal with, the same testimony to validate and confirm the claim, and the same decision to make.
