“Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you<\/em>” (Hebrews 13:17).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
In this verse, the author refers to the elders who oversee and shepherd the congregation (Acts 20:28). They were responsible for ruling the congregation. The congregation was responsible for following.<\/p>\n
The congregation is exhorted to obey and submit. The Greek word “peitho<\/em>” (obey) generally means to be persuaded or convinced. Thus, the elders are not to be despots or dictators, nor does their authority extend beyond what the New Testament prescribes. Nonetheless, when God’s terms are clearly defined, the congregation must be humbly convicted and humbly follow.<\/p>\n
The congregation’s response is enjoined in light of the grave duties of those who lead. The shepherds are soul watchers. Their concern is with the eternal and spiritual welfare of their constituents. There is not a more important job in this world! This is no trifling matter! Elders must take trouble for souls. They must know the flock’s needs and challenges.<\/p>\n
If any of the sheep are lost, an elder must be able to explain. They are certainly not responsible for the members’ actions, but for how they handle their spiritual welfare. They must always be watchful.<\/p>\n
The shepherd’s work is easier when the flock is cooperative. Their job is to persuade and convince; however, if the sheep are bent on following their own way, the shepherd’s job becomes grievous. He may justify himself, but he will still shed tears over those who are foolishly lost.<\/p>\n
This exhortation is much needed today. Our world is characterized by a healthy need for independence, but also by an unhealthy distrust of even those with legitimate authority. But when spiritual leaders fulfill their duties in a godly manner, the followers must yield, and the result is joy for both, now and for an eternity.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
