Suddenly you hear and feel it – the noise of the rumble strip and the violent jolt as your right-side tires leave the asphalt. In that moment of sudden panic, human instinct takes over. You white-knuckle the wheel and pull hard in the opposite direction. But ask any first responder, and they’ll tell you the same thing: the initial drift rarely flips the car; rather, it’s the overcorrection that causes the wreck.

This physical reality mirrors a spiritual truth: Far too often, when Christians detect a drift from the straight and narrow, they yank the wheel in the opposite direction and wreck the very faith they were trying to save. But God never called us to live in panic-driven reactions. He called us to travel a straight, biblical path.

Jesus Refused to Overcorrect

First-century Judaism was an example of religious overcorrection, with two primary religious groups who had split the Scriptures down the middle.

On one side were the conservative Pharisees. Terrified of secular corruption, they yanked the wheel hard to the right by adding all sorts of man-made rules, elevating human tradition over divine Scripture, and, in the process, creating a cold, mechanical legalism (i.e., Mark 2:18-28; 7:1-23; Matthew 23:1-36).

On the other side were the liberal Sadducees. Looking at the man-made, separatist traditions of the Pharisees, they swerved in the opposite direction, overcorrecting to the left, and in the process, stripping away doctrines such as the resurrection, angels, and the soul (Act 23:8). Their main goal was to maintain their aristocratic social standing and religious power at the Temple under Roman occupation, at whatever cost (cf. John 11:45-50; Act 5:17-18).

Then Jesus walked onto the scene. One aspect that made our Lord’s ministry so striking was His refusal to overcorrect: He didn’t let either group set His agenda. When He saw the lawlessness of the culture, He didn’t panic and swerve to the Pharisees’ right or the Sadducees’ left. Rather, He taught His disciples to reject the overcorrectionary teachings of both groups (Matthew 16:1-12). Instead, Jesus kept the wheel steady on the Father’s straight path, so much so that even His enemies admitted, “Teacher, we know that You are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and You do not care about anyone’s opinion, for You are not swayed by appearances” (Matthew 22:16; cf. John 14:6).

Not to the Left or Right but Straight Ahead

Sadly, much of church history is a story of believers swerving back and forth between the left and right. A preacher or a church senses a drift toward modern culture and compromise; then panic sets in. Instead of simply preaching the Bible, they yank the wheel to the right, adding extra-biblical expressions, rigid traditions, or a spirit of judgment all in the name of protecting truth.

But then a generation grows up under that harsh system; they get burned by the hypocrisy, burdened by the legalism, and they hit their own rumble strip. In an attempt to get away from the oppressiveness, they erratically yank the wheel toward the left by discarding hard truths, ignoring sin, and watering down the Gospel in the name of protecting grace.

Both sides think they’re saving the vehicle, but both are causing a rollover. We would do well to practice the wisdom of Proverbs 4:25-27: “Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.” The way of wisdom and righteousness is straight ahead; evils lie on the left and the right, with liberals and conservatives.

When you feel yourself drifting or think the church around you is swerving out of control, don’t yank the wheel toward man-made traditions, and don’t let go of the wheel to worldly compromise. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, your hands steady on Scripture, and keep going straight ahead. Because truth isn’t found in reacting to error; it’s found by staying in the lane God has clearly marked out.

by Clay Gentry Imagine you’re driving down the highway and getting distracted for just a few seconds.
