“It is not because of your righteousness … for you are a stubborn people” (Deuteronomy 9:6).

Deuteronomy 9 is a humbling chapter. In Deuteronomy 9:6, Moses tells Israel about their stubbornness. That’s blunt, but necessary. Israel needed to understand that God’s blessings weren’t rewards for good behavior; they were expressions of His grace.

Moses reminds them of their failures, not to shame them, but to keep them grounded. If they believed they earned God’s favor, pride would destroy them. Grace is meant to produce humility, gratitude, and obedience.

We need this reminder too. God doesn’t bless us because we’re impressive. He blesses us because He’s gracious. When we forget that, we start comparing ourselves to others, judging them, and elevating ourselves. Moses wants Israel to stay aware of their dependence on God.

Think about an area where pride might be creeping in. Deuteronomy 9:6 invites you to return to humility. God’s grace is the foundation of your life. Let that truth shape how you think, speak, and respond today.

by Zeke Flores “It is not because of your righteousness … for you are a stubborn people” (Deuteronomy 9:6).
