“It is not because of your righteousness … for you are a stubborn people<\/em>” (Deuteronomy 9:6).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Deuteronomy 9 is a humbling chapter. In Deuteronomy 9:6, Moses tells Israel about their stubbornness. That’s blunt, but necessary. Israel needed to understand that God’s blessings weren’t rewards for good behavior; they were expressions of His grace.<\/p>\n
Moses reminds them of their failures, not to shame them, but to keep them grounded. If they believed they earned God’s favor, pride would destroy them. Grace is meant to produce humility, gratitude, and obedience.<\/p>\nWe need this reminder too. God doesn’t bless us because we’re impressive. He blesses us because He’s gracious. When we forget that, we start comparing ourselves to others, judging them, and elevating ourselves. Moses wants Israel to stay aware of their dependence on God.
