They don’t just record what happened; they intentionally set the stage with specific “run-ups” that set up Jesus’ arrival.

The Gospels of Matthew and Mark:

The Run-Up

The healing of the blind men/Bartimaeus outside of Jericho (Matthew 20:29-34; Mark 10:46-52).

The Connection

While the sighted crowd simply calls him “Jesus, of Nazareth” (Mark 10:47; cf. Matthew 21:11), the blind men/Bartimaeus appeal to Him as “Jesus, Son of David” (Bartimaeus is the first in Mark to do that). The crowd then picks up on this and praises Him, saying, “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!” (Mark 11:10; cf. Matthew 21:9).

The Gospel of Luke

The Run-Up

The Parable of the Ten Minas (19:11-27)

The Connection

Luke explicitly tells us why Jesus tells this parable, “Because He was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately” (Luke 19:11). The crowds expect an immediate political overhaul; the parable challenges this notion, warning of resistance by fellow countrymen, an interim period of stewardship, and a delayed return for final judgment. They may shout, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” (Luke 19:38), but we, the readers, know based on the preceding parable that many of them will revolt against the King’s rule.

The Gospel of John

The Run Up

The Raising of Lazarus from the Dead (John 11:1-57)

The Connection

The raising of Lazarus is the tipping point. Religiously, it seals the Sanhedrin’s decision to execute Jesus (John 11:53; cf. 12:19). Popularly, it triggers the mass turnout for the Triumphal Entry: “The crowd that had been with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet Him was that they heard He had done this sign” (John 21:17-18). The excitement over the raising of Lazarus would ironically set in motion Jesus’ own death… and resurrection.

So, the Synoptics use narrative structure to shape their perspective (Sight vs. Blindness; Resistance and Faithfulness vs. the King’s Rule), while John reveals the historical chain of events (the Raising of Lazarus) that brought the whole city to a fever pitch as Jesus rode into Jerusalem.

by Clay Gentry Here’s something else to add to the old “I’ve Never Noticed That Before File”: We all know the account of the Triumphal Entry, but have you ever paid attention to how each Gospel writer frames the crowd’s response to His arrival?
