{"id":86935,"date":"2025-05-02T12:21:13","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T17:21:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/?p=86935"},"modified":"2025-05-02T12:21:13","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T17:21:13","slug":"does-acts-3-prove-instrumental-music-is-scriptural","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/does-acts-3-prove-instrumental-music-is-scriptural\/","title":{"rendered":"Does Acts 3 Prove Instrumental Music Is Scriptural?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<p>by Perry Hall<\/p>\n<p>An up-and-coming trend to defend musical instruments in praising God consists of this line of argument:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In Acts 3, Peter and John went to the temple at the hour of prayer to pray.<\/li>\n<li>The temple used instruments in prayer.<\/li>\n<li>Therefore, Peter and John&#8217;s actions show it is scriptural to use instruments in prayer to God.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Admittedly, this syllogism works. That is, it follows the logic from the premise to the conclusion.<\/p>\nHowever, there is a problem. The text does not say, &#8220;Peter and John went to the temple to pray&#8221;.<br \/>\nHere is the text: &#8220;<em>Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer.<\/em>&#8221; Does this text say <b>why <\/b>they went or <b>when <\/b>they went? <strong>When<\/strong>!\n<p>Now, as we continue to read, <b>why <\/b>did they go? To heal and to preach.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<em>But when Peter saw this, he replied to the people, &#8216;Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this, or why do you gaze at us, as if by our own power or piety we had made him walk?&#8217;<\/em>&#8221; (Acts 3:12).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is parallel to Acts 2.\u00a0<strong>When\u00a0<\/strong>were the apostles together? It was the Day of Pentecost.\u00a0<strong>Why\u00a0<\/strong>were the apostles gathered? Was it to celebrate the Jewish Feast of the Ingathering? Or was it because that is where the people were,\u00a0and they wanted to preach?<\/p>\n<p>This is why Paul later went to the Synagogue on the Sabbath. He wasn&#8217;t observing the Sabbath; he was going to where the people were to preach.<\/p>\n<p>Acts 3 does not demonstrate <b>how <\/b>to worship in song or prayer.
