I’m a baptized member of the church of Christ, and I was wondering if it would be a sin to get breast implants. I have a “deformity” that causes them to look strange, and I was wondering if it would be a sin to go ahead and have it corrected. It would cause no financial issues. They would be for my husband only. My main question is, would it defy the way God made me? Would it be vanity since it’s cosmetic only and restores no function? The associated health risks also make me wonder if it would be a sin.

Answer:

The argument that “this is the way God made me” isn’t adequate. People are born with problems (bowed legs, feet problems, etc.), and we think it is acceptable to have corrective surgeries. In your case, there is no problem caused by your birth defect, and you could live with it the way things are. However, if someone suffered an accident that caused a similar issue, we usually find it acceptable to put the body back to the way it was, if possible.

Yes, you are doing it because you would be more comfortable with the issue corrected. However, you have the funds to make the change. You are not neglecting others by having this procedure done. All surgeries contain risk, but so does going across town. Christianity is not about removing risks. Thus, if you and your husband want to accept the risks and think that it will make life a bit more comfortable, I don’t see harm in your proposal.

Is it for everyone? No. Is it necessary? No. But I have pictures on my wall at home because I like how it looks. I won’t spend money on such things if something more important needs to be done. I realize that it is optional. I suggest seeing this change in a similar light.

Where I think people go too far is when their bodies are perfectly fine, and yet they are still not satisfied.

Question: Hello brother!
