{"id":69822,"date":"2024-09-15T18:42:53","date_gmt":"2024-09-15T23:42:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/?p=69822"},"modified":"2024-09-15T18:42:53","modified_gmt":"2024-09-15T23:42:53","slug":"preaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/preaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Preaching"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<p>by John Iverson<\/p>\n<h2>Introduction<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Even those who have a vague idea of what the Bible teaches know preaching is ordained of God (Titus 1:1-3)<\/li>\n<li>Some of the greatest men who have ever lived were proclaimers of God&#8217;s Word.\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>Noah (II Peter 2:5)<\/li>\n<li>Solomon (Ecclesiastes 1:1)<\/li>\n<li>Paul (I Timothy 2:7)<\/li>\n<li>Jesus (Luke 4:18-19)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol type=\"I\">\n<li>Some of the Purposes of Preaching\n<ol type=\"A\">\n<li>Save the lost (Mark 16:15-16; Romans 1:10-17)<\/li>\n<li>Edify the saved (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 20:32)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Kinds of Preaching Needed\n<ol type=\"A\">\n<li>Pointed and direct, or eye-opening (Acts 2:36-38). We cannot expect to convict sinners by a &#8220;tread-easy,&#8221; &#8220;go-lightly&#8221; type of preaching.<\/li>\n<li>Adapted preaching. Some examples:\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>John the Baptist (Matthew 14:1-12)<\/li>\n<li>Stephen (Acts 7:54-60)<\/li>\n<li>Paul (Acts 24:25)<\/li>\n<li>Note: Men who know certain things should be preached but refuse to do so are &#8220;men-pleasers&#8221; and &#8220;time-servers.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Distinctive preaching. Preaching that is not distinctive is not gospel preaching. This requires both negative and positive preaching.\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>Matthew 6:1-18; II Timothy 4:1-4<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Applied Preaching. Preach that which can be applied, not some glittering generalities. Present the principles of the New Testament in such a way as to make them applicable to the needs of the audience.\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>II Timothy 2:17-18-Paul names and identifies false teachers.<\/li>\n<li>Those who wish to tickle itching ears instead of pleasing God will not seek to apply their teaching (Galatians 1:10)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Kinds of Preachers Needed\n<ol type=\"A\">\n<li>We often lack the right kind of preaching because we lack the right kind of preachers.<\/li>\n<li>Like David-must love truth and hate evil (Psalms 119:97, 104)<\/li>\n<li>The right kind of preachers today who will:\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>Preach full gospel (Romans 15:19; Acts 20:20-27)<\/li>\n<li>Respect the silence of the Scriptures (Deuteronomy 29:29; Matthew 28:20)<\/li>\n<li>Preach like the apostles (Acts 4:20; II Corinthians 4:13 (i.e., with conviction)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Someone aptly stated: &#8220;A man who will not preach his convictions either is not a man or has no convictions to preach.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Results of Preaching\n<ol type=\"A\">\n<li>Those with &#8220;good and honest hearts&#8221; will hear and obey; others will not see (I Corinthians 2:16)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Conclusion:<\/h2>\n<p>May God help us to preach his word faithfully.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by John Iverson Introduction Even those who have a vague idea of what the Bible teaches know preaching is ordained of God (Titus 1:1-3) Some of the greatest men who have ever lived were proclaimers of God&#8217;s Word.
