We all sin and have consequences for God to judge and decide.

God also forgives those who ask. It sounds like they understand what they did. Who are you to pass such judgment on their future? They can not undo what they did, but they can ask for forgiveness and guidance from God. It sounded like they wanted to do the right thing now and marry on paper. For you to tell him to leave her … What right do you have to punish them and not give them forgiveness?

You should find them and apologize.

Answer:

What right do you have to tell people to ignore God’s law? “Whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery” (Matthew 5:32). In “Is it true that I can’t marry the woman I committed adultery with?“, this man committed adultery with a woman. The woman’s husband justly decided to divorce his wife for her infidelity. As you noted, sins have consequences, and God said that the consequence of committing adultery and being divorced for it is that if the divorcee marries again, it is adultery. The adulterer has no right to the woman and cannot marry her.

My job as a preacher of God’s word is to tell you the truth. “These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you” (Titus 2:15). That you don’t like it only shows the condition of your heart.

Forgiveness is only gained when the sin is given up. You cannot be forgiven for the sins that you remain in. “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?” (Romans 6:1-2). Thus, he can be forgiven of his adultery by leaving the woman with whom he is committing adultery and then seeking God’s forgiveness.

Question:

Sin has consequences, yes. God decides that, not you. They surely have suffered regret, loss, and guilt, but thanks to God’s grace, they can be forgiven.

God sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross to free us from the law and give us grace.

Answer:

“For this is a rebellious people, false sons, sons who refuse to listen to the instruction of the LORD; who say to the seers, “You must not see visions”; and to the prophets, “You must not prophesy to us what is right, speak to us pleasant words, prophesy illusions” (Isaiah 30:9-10).

We agree that God sets the terms for His commandments.
