\nThe judgment day was here.
\nIt came in the twinkling of an eye,
\nI had no time for fear.\nI found myself in one great line,
\nWith men from every land.
\nMen from every race and age
\nStood like grains of sand.\nChrist held the book within his hands
\nAnd God was on the throne.
\nHe set about to judge each man,
\nBy the things which each had sown.\nThen Christ took the book of life
\nAnd read the names therein;
\nThere were many that once were there,
\nBut were blotted out by sin.\nAnd I wondered if I’d find mine still,
\nFor it had once been there.
\nWould my name be covered with stain,
\nOr would my name be bare?\nI stood in fear before the throne
\nAnd thought back on all my life;
\nHow I fought to keep God’s word
\nAnd fled from sin and strife.\nI never failed to read God’s word.
\nMy love, it never died.
\nI taught my children right from wrong,
\nI told them not to lie.\nI never failed to worship God
\nOn Sunday and Wednesday night.
\nI often traveled many miles
\nTo hear a word of light.\nI gave my goods to feed the poor
\nAnd never ceased to pray.
\nI’d always kept my tongue in check
\nUntil this very day.\nSo surely the Lord will know me
\nAnd tell me to walk on in;
\nBut Lord, please have mercy
\nOn all these lost in sin.\nAnd as I thought, the crowd moved up,
\nAnd I was fifth in line,
\nThe men that stood before me
\nWere ready to pay their fine.\nThe first man stepped to meet the Lord,
\nAnd fell upon the floor,
\nThen I saw just who it was,
\nIt was the man next door.\nJesus took the book of life
\nBut could not find his name.
\nMy neighbor said, “I have not heard.”
\nI knew, I was the blame.\nNext in line was Sister Anne,
\nWho once in Christ had been.
\nBecause I failed to admonish her,
\nShe continued in her sin.\nHer name had once been written
\nIn the pages of that book,
\nBut I never even took the time
\nTo see why she forsook.\nThen a black man came before the throne
\nHe had worked with me for years,
\nHe knew his name would not be there
\nAnd his eyes were filled with tears.\nThis man had never learned the truth
\nAnd neither had his kin,
\nFor I would not talk with them
\nFor the color of their skin.\nAnd then the man before me
\nI suddenly recognized,
\nAnd as he stepped before the throne
\nHe looked into my eyes.\nHe was my roommate from college days,
\nHe had been my greatest friend,
\nWe’d always helped each other out,
\nDown through thick and thin.\nBut I never told him of the Lord,
\nIt seemed so trivial then,
\nFor we were young and had plenty of time
\nTo talk of God and sin.\nAnd finally upon the judgment day,
\nI meet with him once more,
\nBut now there’s nothing I can say
\nTo open him the door.\nAnd now I stood before the Lord,
\nMy soul was filled with fright.
\n“Why hadn’t I taken the time
\nTo teach them what was right.”\nAgain the Lord, He took the book
\nAnd looked there for my name,
\nWhere once had been a pure white page
\nMy brothers’ blood now stained.\nAnd then the Lord, He said to me,
\n“I’ve found here one dark blot.
\nYou hid My name from all these men.
\nDepart, I know you not.”\n“You met them every day in life
\nAnd knew they were astray,
\nBut you never even cared enough
