{"id":57273,"date":"2005-12-23T21:21:00","date_gmt":"2005-12-24T03:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/?p=57273"},"modified":"2022-12-23T21:23:33","modified_gmt":"2022-12-24T03:23:33","slug":"if-there-is-only-one-in-the-godhead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/if-there-is-only-one-in-the-godhead\/","title":{"rendered":"If There is Only One in the Godhead"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\tby Johnie Edwards<br \/>\nvia Back To Basics, Vol. 3, No. 2, February 2005.\nThere are consequences of the doctrine that there is only one person in the Godhead. \u00a0We take a look at some of these:\n<h2 align=\"left\">Why the Word &#8220;Both?&#8221;<\/h2>\nThe word &#8220;both&#8221; means more than one. \u00a0John wrote, &#8220;<em>Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. \u00a0He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ hath both the Father and the Son<\/em>&#8221; (II John 9).<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Why would the Holy Spirit refer to &#8220;<em>both the Father and the Son<\/em>,&#8221; if they are one and the same person?\n<h2 align=\"left\">Why the Words &#8220;Thou&#8221; and &#8220;Me?&#8221;<\/h2>\nThe Hebrew writer quoted Jesus as saying, &#8220;<em>Wherefore when He cometh into the world, He saith, Sacrifice and offering Thou wouldest not, but a body hast Thou prepared for Me<\/em>&#8221; (Hebrews 10:5). \u00a0Those who teach that there is only one person in the Godhead have to deal with this and tell us who is &#8220;Thou&#8221; and &#8220;Me&#8221; in the passage. \u00a0It is obvious that &#8220;Thou&#8221; is God, the Father, and &#8220;Me&#8221; is Jesus, the Son.\n<h2 align=\"left\">Why Did the Holy Spirit Employ the Words &#8220;Us&#8221; and &#8220;Our?&#8221;<\/h2>\nIt was said at the creation, &#8220;<em>Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness &#8230;<\/em>&#8221; (Genesis 1:26).<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The &#8220;oneness&#8221; doctrine demands that the words Us and Our should not have been used! \u00a0The reason they are used is there was more than one present at the creation. \u00a0In fact, Paul told the Colossians, &#8220;<em>For by Him (Christ) were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him and for Him<\/em>&#8221; (Colossians 1:16).<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>In fact, John declared that Jesus was with God at the beginning (John 1:1-3, 14).\n<h2 align=\"left\">Why is Jesus Said to be the Mediator Between God and Man?<\/h2>\nWriting to Timothy, Paul penned, &#8220;<em>For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the Man, Christ Jesus<\/em>&#8221; (I Timothy 2:5).<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>If there is only one person in the Godhead, how could Jesus be the mediator between Himself and Himself?\nSee the consequence of this &#8220;oneness&#8221; doctrine?\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Johnie Edwards via Back To Basics, Vol. 3, No. 2, February 2005.
