She was spanked and sent to bed at 4 pm. When her friends came to the door my I told them she was sick. I didn’t tell them she was being punished.

Answer:

Let’s see: By your example then, when your daughter doesn’t want you to know she had gotten in trouble at school, it will be perfectly all right with you if one of her friends covers for her and tells you a lie. Or, when she wants to do something she knows you disapprove, it is fine for one of her friends to tell you she’s with them when she is not.

I can’t think of a reason why you saw a benefit in lying to a bunch of kids. I know you claim it is for her, but few people truly tell lies for other people. Liars almost always do so because they perceive a benefit for themselves.

But regardless of the excuse, Christians are told to always tell the truth. “Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another” (Ephesians 4:25). If you didn’t want to get into a long, drawn-out explanation, you could have just said your daughter is not available and that if they want more information they will have to ask her tomorrow.

For your own soul’s sake, you need to stop reaching for the language of Satan (John 8:44) and start speaking the language of God (John 17:17). Liars don’t end up in heaven (Revelation 21:8).

Question: Should I lie for my 11-year-old daughter? She was spanked and sent to bed at 4 pm.
