This reasoning is terribly wrong. First, Matthew wrote over a decade after Jesus ascended to heaven and told us what Jesus said with the aid of the Holy Spirit (John 16:13). We know what Jesus said during His personal ministry only because the Holy Spirit revealed the 27 books of the New Testament after Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension. None of these writings, given by the Holy Spirit, were written in the colors black and red. They were all given by the Holy Spirit in the same available color. The Holy Spirit sanctified all the words equally and did not say to pay special attention to the red letters.

Those who make the argument that they believe the red letters (a later invention of man), but not the portions of the Bible from Acts through Revelation, do not even believe the red letters. The red letters said that the apostles would be guided by the Spirit into all truth (John 16:13) including things Jesus did not get to say, but wanted to be said (John 14:26; 15:26). So, if we do not believe that the Spirit guided the apostles into all truth, we do not even believe the words in red. This means that we do not believe Jesus at all. Think about that before you claim to believe part of the New Testament but not other parts. To take such a stance is to show no faith in Jesus at all. Jesus said that rejecting the apostles is the same as rejecting Him and the Father. “He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me” (Luke 10:16). These are words in red stated to His apostles. Rejecting their words is the same as rejecting Jesus and the Father.
