{"id":44090,"date":"2022-03-05T11:57:30","date_gmt":"2022-03-05T17:57:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/?p=44090"},"modified":"2022-03-05T11:57:30","modified_gmt":"2022-03-05T17:57:30","slug":"is-bible-reading-a-part-of-worship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/is-bible-reading-a-part-of-worship\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Bible reading a part of worship?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<h2>Question:<\/h2>\n<p>I salute you, brother, in our Lord Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p>Is scripture reading also an act of worship along with prayer, songs, preaching, the Lord&#8217;s supper, and giving?<\/p>\n<p>Is there any biblical order to be done in worship?<\/p>\n\t<h2>Answer:<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<em>Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching<\/em>&#8221; (I Timothy 4:13).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Since the reading is done publically, it is reasonable to conclude that it was done as a part of worship services. It should not be surprising as the Jews read scripture when they gathered in synagogues for worship. &#8220;<em>And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read<\/em>&#8221; (Luke 4:16). &#8220;<em>For Moses from ancient generations has in every city those who preach him, since he is read in the synagogues every Sabbath<\/em>&#8221; (Acts 15:21). The implication is that this practice was carried over to the church. &#8220;<em>I adjure you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the brethren<\/em>&#8221; (I Thessalonians 5:27).<\/p>\n<p>There is no order in which worship services are to be done. There are guidelines in I Corinthians 14, for how the services are to be conducted, such as<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;<em>So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air<\/em>&#8221; (I Corinthians 14:9).<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<em>What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also. Otherwise if you bless in the spirit only, how will the one who fills the place of the ungifted say the &#8220;Amen&#8221; at your giving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying? For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not edified<\/em>&#8221; (I Corinthians 14:15-17).<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<em>What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation.
