He spoke of being &#8220;lifted up&#8221; which was an allusion to crucifixion where a person is lifted up on a cross.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<em>And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life<\/em>&#8221; (John 3:14-15).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Then Jesus said to them, &#8216;When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things&#8217;<\/em>&#8221; (John 8:28).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>&#8216;And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.&#8217; This He said, signifying by what death He would die<\/em>&#8221; (John 12:32-33).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When the Jews demanded that the Romans put Jesus to death, John points out that the death penalty selected fulfilled Jesus&#8217; own prophecy. &#8220;<em>Then Pilate said to them, &#8220;You take Him and judge Him according to your law.&#8221; Therefore the Jews said to him, &#8220;It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,&#8221; that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die<\/em>&#8221; (John 18:31-32).<\/p>\n<p>Several times Jesus spoke plainly about the death he would suffer, even though his statements were lost on his followers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<em>From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day<\/em>&#8221; (Matthew 16:21).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Now while they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, &#8220;The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him, and the third day He will be raised up.&#8221; And they were exceedingly sorrowful<\/em>&#8221; (Matthew 17:22-23).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge\u00a0<strong>and to crucify<\/strong>.
