Text: Proverbs 24:3-6<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I. There are three aspects to learning, whether we talk about school work or Bible study<\/p>\n
A. Proverbs 2:6 – The Lord gives wisdom, knowledge, and understanding<\/p>\n
B. Proverbs 24:3-4 – Compared to a house<\/p>\n 1. Knowledge is the comprehension of facts. It fills our minds with pleasant\nand useful things\n 2. Understanding is the reasoning of relationships. Reasoning or logic is the\nfirm basis on which we stand.\n
3. Wisdom is the application of learning. It is how we put it all together.<\/p>\n C. It is amazing how often these three principles are related in various passages of\nthe scriptures.\n
II. Knowledge<\/p>\n
A. Hannah recognized that God is a God of knowledge – I Samuel 2:3<\/p>\n
B. Psalms 94:10 – God teaches knowledge. He has given us His Word.<\/p>\n
C. Proverbs 1:22 – Fools hate knowledge<\/p>\n D. II Timothy 3:7 – Some people “learn” but they never fill their minds with\nknowledge. It is in one ear and out the other.\n
E. Knowledge by itself is not adequate<\/p>\n
1. Knowledge brings sorrows – Ecclesiastes 1:18<\/p>\n
2. Knowledge can bring pride – I Corinthians 8:1<\/p>\n
III. Understanding<\/p>\n
A. Our service to God is to be reasonable or rational or logical – Romans 12:1<\/p>\n B. Hebrews 5:14 – Only by practice and continual training (similar to athlete) can we\njudge between good and evil\n
C. Ephesians 5:10 – Proving what is acceptable to God<\/p>\n
D. II Peter 3:16 – Evil people twist passages. In other words, they use faulty logic.<\/p>\n
E. Our weapon against this is godly reasoning – II Corinthians 10:3-5<\/p>\n
1. Overthrowing “imaginations” or “speculations”<\/p>\n
a. Means reasoning or logic<\/p>\n
b. Bad logic that works against the knowledge of God<\/p>\n
2. Bringing every thought into captivity<\/p>\n
a. Literally all intellect<\/p>\n 3. We are to answer every person who asks for a reason, or the logic behind\nour hope – I Peter 3:15\n 4. Knowing the fate of those who do not believe God, we seek to persuade\nthem of the truth – II Corinthians 5:11\n
F. The examples<\/p>\n
1. Paul – Acts 13:43; 17:2; 18:4<\/p>\n
2. Apollos – Acts 18:28<\/p>\n
3. Paul using debates – Acts 19:8<\/p>\n
4. Many, many, many more scriptures could be sited<\/p>\n G. We need to teach our children not just the facts (knowledge) of the Scriptures, but\nalso how to reason; how to construct logical arguments; how to see the flaws in\nthe reasoning of false teachers.\n
IV. Wisdom<\/p>\n
A. James 1:5 – If we lack, ask of God<\/p>\n
B. Proverbs 9:10 – The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom<\/p>\n
C. To gain wisdom, you have to approach it with the right attitude – Proverbs 14:6-8<\/p>\n
1. James 1:6-7 – Must ask with no doubting<\/p>\n
2. Proverbs 14:33 – You must have logic to have wisdom<\/p>\n
D. Some people only listen to what they want to hear – II Timothy 4:3-4<\/p>\n
E. I Corinthians 1:20-21 – God has overthrown worldly wisdom<\/p>\n
V. To be good servants of God, we need to engage in all three aspects of learning<\/p>\n A. Solomon asked for wisdom and knowledge to judge God’s people – II Chronicles\n1:10\n B. Proverbs 23:23-25 – Buy the truth, get wisdom, discipline, understanding. Make\nyour parents happy\n C. Paul was confident that the Romans were full of knowledge and able to persuade\n(or admonish) others – Romans 15:14\n D. Wisdom, knowledge, a plan, and understanding will protect us from the evil –\nProverbs 2:10-15\n
