So guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be faithless<\/em>&#8221; (Malachi 2:16 ESV).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Malachi 2:16 literally says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;(because he hated) (sending out) (he has said) (Yahweh) (the God of) (Israel) (for he has covered with) (violence) (upon his garment) (he has said) (Yahweh) (hosts) (and you must be careful) (with your spirit) (and not) (you will act treacherously)&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The first thing to notice is that there are a lot of masculine references. Is the &#8220;he&#8221; referring to God or the husband? The ESV translators decided the first &#8220;he&#8221; refers to the husband. The KJV, NKJV, and the NASB decided the &#8220;he&#8221; refers to God.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I think the reference is to God is the more likely one because the husband is referred in the second-person at the end of Malachi 2:15 and God is referred to in the third-person in the term &#8220;he has said.&#8221; The pronoun in &#8220;because he hated&#8221; is in the third-person. Even so, I can understand the reasoning since &#8220;he has covered with&#8221; and &#8220;upon his garment&#8221; both are in the third-person and seem to refer to the husband.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Question: Do you know why in Malachi 2:16 the ESV removes the saying that God hates divorce?
