I am a female but have always felt that I should be a male. As young as 2-3 years old I have had these feelings. Is it wrong to have a sex change? Is there anything in the Bible that speaks to this? I am looking for any guidance or spiritual advice.

Answer:

“A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the LORD your God” (Deuteronomy 22:5).

It’s almost humorous. You state that you feel that you should have been a boy. You probably never thought about this, but that is a typical way for a woman to approach a subject. A woman is more emotionally based in her thinking than a man and so feelings are given high credibility.

Now don’t get me wrong, there are times that such thinking is very useful. We often speak of a woman’s intuition. This is because a woman can sometimes make leaps to the correct conclusion where facts might not lead her. Often it is because she can read the subtle emotional currents that men completely miss.

But complete reliance on emotional thinking can be dangerous because emotions can be manipulated. To ignore facts simply because your emotions tug you in a different direction is wrong.

Let’s assume for a moment that you did attempt a sex change operation. If you committed a crime and the DNA evidence were examined, would the investigator conclude that it was done by a man or a woman? Regardless of the changes made, you will remain the same as you were born. All you would have accomplished is disguising your true self as a man, and God clearly has stated that He finds such action disgusting. After all, it was God who set your gender, but you would be stating by your actions that God made a mistake — which He didn’t.

The point is that you can’t change your sex. You can only disguise who you really are, and is that any way for a person to live?

What you are stating is that you are not content to live life as God gave it to you. You are setting yourself up for unhappiness. Happiness is found in enjoying what you have. If you think you can only have happiness if something changed you’ll never really have it. If you want an illustration of this, take a look at Michael Jackson. Everyone knows that the saddest thing in his life was that he was never satisfied with who he was. Despite all the alterations, he never did find happiness.

Enjoy being who you are. Enjoy life as it comes to you. There will be good times and bad. There will be things you really like and things that you would have rather not experienced. But in all aspects grow as a person who enjoys serving God and who gets a kick out of life.

“Truly the light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to behold the sun; but if a man lives many years and rejoices in them all, yet let him remember the days of darkness, for they will be many. All that is coming is vanity. Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes; but know that for all these God will bring you into judgment. Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, and put away evil from your flesh, for childhood and youth are vanity” (Ecclesiastes 11:7-10).

Question: The greater part of my life, I dare say my entire life, I have felt that I am in the wrong body.
