And all who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers” (Luke 2:46-47).

Clearly Jesus was not the typical twelve-year-old. Later, in adulthood, Jesus returns to his hometown and they are puzzled. “He came to His hometown and began teaching them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, ‘Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?’” (Matthew 13:54). Implied is that even though he astounded the teachers in Jerusalem, he kept his wisdom hidden while he was growing up.

This isn’t surprising. Those who knew Jesus in his younger years frequently pushed for him to reveal himself. “When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come’” (John 2:3-4). Jesus did solve the problem but in a way that did not directly connect him with the result. Only the disciples and a few servants knew what happened. As he later told his brothers, “Therefore His brothers said to Him, ‘Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.’ For not even His brothers were believing in Him. So Jesus said to them, ‘My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune. The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil’” (John 7:3-7). While his brothers didn’t believe Jesus was the Messiah, we do see that Jesus was keeping a low profile until the proper time. Too early and the timing would not be correct to lead to his crucifixion.

I can’t fully explain the spirit that each of us possesses or how that spirit interacts with the physical body, but I know it is there. Therefore, I can’t fully explain how the Creator of this universe managed to come to this world as a child, but I know He did. Like all children, Jesus grew physically and that means his brain also matured. What was seen by others was a child who developed like all other children but there were hints, such as the visit to the temple at the age of twelve, that told observers that Jesus was more than what he appeared to be.

Question: I believe Jesus was omniscient while on Earth, but could you explain “grew in wisdom” as discussed in Luke 2:52?
