Many cities of Moab are listed, and from those named, we realize that in Isaiah’s time, Moab had basically taken over Rueben’s territory. The devastation prophesied will cover all of Moab’s territory. Pleas are being made to their gods without an answer. Everyone is in mourning. Even the army is unable to defend the nation because they too are weeping.

The Extent of the Destruction – Isaiah 15:5-9

Isaiah is moved with compassion for Moab’s plight, even though Moab has long been Israel’s enemy. People are attempting to flee the country. Drought is making the problem worse for the people. The plunder that had been gathered through the years is carried off. Dimon is specifically named as being especially hard hit.

Attempts to Flee – Isaiah 16:1-6

A plea is made to Judah, asking them to take in refugees from Moab. They have sent a tribute to Judah. The people of Moab are gathering on the border, asking for a decision to be made quickly. Those who have caused problems for Israel have not survived; thus, Judah can help Moab, and it should not be for a long time.

The refugees suggest that Judah’s throne will be known for its mercy, and all will know that the ruler is a faithful judge who seeks justice and follows righteousness. Some see this as foreshadowing the Messiah’s reign.

Moab’s Pride Leads to Its Fall – Isaiah 16:6-12

The people of Moab have always been overly prideful. They are known for making false claims, and thus, their claim of needing temporary refuge is judged to be untrue. It is this pride that has led to their downfall.

Taking refuge in Judah requires placing themselves in submission to Judah’s kings. Either Moab declines to submit due to her pride, or Judah refuses to allow the refugees in because of a lack of trust.

God sorrows over Moab’s destruction. The nation has long been Israel and Judah’s enemy, but God takes no pleasure in what will happen to its people (Proverbs 24:17-18).

Moab will plead with its idols, but it won’t change anything because idols are not true gods. Their false gods cannot rescue them.

God Declares that Moab Will Fall in Three Years – Isaiah 16:13-14

At some point, God made known that the prophecies against Moab would take place in three years. They were three years, as a hired man would count the time. In other words, the time feels like it drags. Moab will be brought low, and only a very small population will be left. The remnant will be so small that it will no longer impact the national scene.

       Prior Lesson

       Isaiah

       Next Lesson

Prophecies Against Moab Text: Isaiah 15-16 Her Sorrow Over Her Lost – Isaiah 15:1-4 In a night attack, the cities Ar and Kir in Moab are destroyed.
