{"id":6673,"date":"2019-07-22T16:52:15","date_gmt":"2019-07-22T21:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/?page_id=6673"},"modified":"2019-07-22T17:14:35","modified_gmt":"2019-07-22T22:14:35","slug":"god-speaks-with-job","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/bible-studies\/job\/god-speaks-with-job\/","title":{"rendered":"God Speaks with Job"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\t<h1>Class 11, Chapters 38 to 40<\/h1>\n<h2>Chapter 38, God<\/h2>\n<p><strong>38:2<\/strong>\u2014darkens counsel\u2014could be discouraging counsel or confuses<\/p>\n<p><strong>38:4-18<\/strong>\u2014God asks Job many rhetorical questions about Job\u2019s knowledge of things only God can know. This might sound harsh\u2014question after question when Job is probably scared\u2014but Job justified himself rather than God (<strong>32:2<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Job forgot that God\u2019s wisdom and perfection are apparent and his works are manifested from his perfection regardless of what we know or if we understand it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>38:19-30<\/strong>\u2014<strong>God works wonders that man cannot duplicate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>38:31-33<\/strong>\u2014space\u2014Mazzaroth\u2014Hebrew word for constellations<\/p>\n<p>A star trek fan called in to report the positions of the stars were incorrect in an episode. Who decided where these stars belong??<\/p>\n<p><strong>38:35<\/strong>\u2014One of my favorite verses in Job<\/p>\n<p><strong>38:39-41<\/strong>\u2014God is the ultimate provider\u2014of wisdom and everything else we need. He attends to the needs of the animals and knows when they are hungry.<\/p>\n<h2>Chapter 39, God<\/h2>\n<p><strong>39:1-4<\/strong>\u2014mankind could have an idea of the birth cycles of mountain goats but the emphasis is probably that God knows better since he made it that way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39:5-8<\/strong>\u2014<u>wild donkey<\/u>: Lives in the dry places away from cities. It eats whatever green he finds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39:9-12<\/strong>\u2014<u>wild ox<\/u>\u2014God made it wild; man cannot control it and use it for his purposes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39:13-18<\/strong>\u2014<u>Ostrich<\/u>\u2014the ostrich seems to deal harshly with her young, at least as we would see it. God has made it this way\u2014he doesn\u2019t say why he hasn\u2019t given her a share in understanding. <strong><u>God has his own reasons <\/u><\/strong>(which he doesn\u2019t always explain).<\/p>\n<p><strong>***<\/strong>I picture the ostrich laughing at the horse as the ostrich runs away and the horse runs into the picture. The horse is arriving and is next to be described by God.<strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>39:19-25<\/strong>\u2014the horse\u2014the horse is mighty. He doesn\u2019t fear battles but is made for them. He knows it\u2019s his time to act and fulfill his purpose when the battle trumpet sounds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39:26<\/strong>\u2014<u>Hawk<\/u><\/p>\n<p><strong>39:27<\/strong>\u2014<u>Eagle<\/u>\u2014God mentions the eagle\u2019s eyesight. If we could trade eyes with an eagle we could look down at the ground from a 10 story building and see an ant crawling on the ground. Eagles have a 340-degree visual field. They have more color perception and objects in their line of sight appear magnified. Their vision is 5x better than a human\u2019s with perfect vision. Pretty impressive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39:30<\/strong>\u2014where the corpse is\u2026<strong>Matthew 24:28<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Chapter 40, Job and God&#8217;s Response<\/h2>\n<p><strong>40:2<\/strong>\u2014is a human to argue with God?<\/p>\n<p><strong>40:3-5<\/strong>\u2014what can I say to you God? I\u2019m small and will not speak to you; I\u2019m not worthy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>40:7<\/strong>\u2014we\u2019re not done yet Job. Get ready to inform me from your stores of wisdom\u2026..<\/p>\n<p><strong>40:8<\/strong>\u2014can you justify yourself by saying God is in the wrong?<\/p>\n<p><strong>***<\/strong>We are stubborn to yield to God\u2019s word when it disagrees with our opinions. We are \u201cright\u201d and we find ways to write off what God has said (or so we think)<strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>40:9<\/strong>\u2014see <strong>Isaiah 63:12<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mount Sinai\u2014<strong>Exodus 19:19<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>40:10-14<\/strong>\u2014glorify yourself, eliminate the wicked right where they stand and punish foolish pride (everywhere on the earth, by the way). If you can do all of this, God will say you have the power to save yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>***Psalm 73<\/strong> shows a good example of our human response to the wicked. We are unable to do what God is challenging Job in these verses, even rulers can\u2019t strike people where they stand as God can.<strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>40:15-24<\/strong>\u2014<u>Behemoth<\/u>\u2014may be an elephant, who knows? It\u2019s very strong. The word \u201ctail\u201d in verse 17 could be any extremity (leading some people to think it could refer to an elephant trunk). Behemoth isn\u2019t described as being aggressive toward people, just very strong and impressive.\u00a0 He eats grass!
