{"id":6665,"date":"2019-07-22T16:37:13","date_gmt":"2019-07-22T21:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/?page_id=6665"},"modified":"2019-07-22T17:15:53","modified_gmt":"2019-07-22T22:15:53","slug":"elihu","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/bible-studies\/job\/elihu\/","title":{"rendered":"Elihu"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\t<h1>Class 9, Chapters 32-34<\/h1>\n<h2>Chapter 32, Elihu<\/h2>\n<p><strong>32:1<\/strong>\u2014even if we are correct on a point or in a discussion, we can render ourselves ineffective with the people we\u2019re talking to if we seem to be righteous in our own eyes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:2<\/strong>\u2014Job\u2019s big problem and ultimate dilemma are why Elihu is angry. He justified <strong><u>himself<\/u><\/strong> rather than God. We can fall into the same trap.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:3<\/strong>\u2014Job\u2019s 3 friends failed to answer the big question Job had for them in <strong>6:24<\/strong>. (What have I done wrong?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:4<\/strong>\u2014Elihu is respectful of people and customs<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:5<\/strong>\u2014Elihu waits for the 3 to come up with an answer and burns with anger when they fail to do so.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:6-7<\/strong>\u2014Initially Elihu is apprehensive about speaking because of his age, so he respectfully waits for the other men to speak in their wisdom and reach a conclusion on the matter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:8-9<\/strong>\u2014Elihu reveals where wisdom truly comes from. It comes from God, not age alone<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:10<\/strong>\u2014Elihu is continuing to be respectful. At first, he was silent to let his elders speak. Then he says he will speak but not just because he feels it\u2019s his turn, but because he has said that wisdom comes from God. He is meekly declaring he has something to say in wisdom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:11-12<\/strong>\u2014I listened and waited and here we are, still without an answer as to what Job has done. Not one person here could find the answer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:13<\/strong>\u2014Be careful before confidently asserting that you speak on God\u2019s behalf<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:14<\/strong>\u2014Job hasn\u2019t argued with me, so I\u2019m not going to tell him the same stuff you 3 did<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:15<\/strong>\u2014Elihu speaks of Job\u2019s 3 friends in the third person saying how they ran out of words trying to solve this problem<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:16<\/strong>\u2014should I remain silent because my elders are? We still haven\u2019t figured this out yet<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:17<\/strong>\u2014Elihu resolves to speak after making a case for doing so. He is able to be respectful and authoritative in his declaration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:18-19<\/strong>\u2014I have to speak; it\u2019s not just an idle want. It\u2019s a need.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:20<\/strong>\u2014I need to speak on this matter or I\u2019m going to lose it! I need to speak.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:21<\/strong>\u2014Elihu sets the stage for an objective look at things. No flattery, no partiality. He will be <u>just<\/u>. All the more reason to listen to him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:22<\/strong>\u2014Elihu is honest and doesn\u2019t know how to use flattery. He is above this and knows flattery has no place in the words of a man of God. God would not tolerate this. Elihu knows he is accountable to God for the things he says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>***<\/strong>Think of how Job\u2019s 3 friends have taken the liberty of asserting their opinions and declaring them to be on God\u2019s behalf. They didn\u2019t focus very much on how they are accountable to God for the words they used. Elihu plainly states that he (and everyone) is accountable to God for the words we use.<strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Chapter 33, Elihu<\/h2>\n<p><strong>33:1-2<\/strong>\u2014up to this point Elihu has given an introduction to the other men and will now speak the words he has prepared<\/p>\n<p><strong>33:3<\/strong>\u2014Elihu speaks with sincerity<\/p>\n<p><strong>33:4<\/strong>\u2014The breath of the Almighty gives life and understanding (<strong>32:8<\/strong>). So if someone doesn\u2019t have understanding, they are living apart from God<\/p>\n<p><strong>33:6-7<\/strong>\u2014I was made just like you. Don\u2019t worry, I\u2019ll take it easy on you, Job.<\/p>\n<p><strong>33:8<\/strong>\u2014I have listened to you speak<\/p>\n<p><strong>33:9<\/strong>\u2014see <strong>9:21<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>33:10<\/strong>\u2014see <strong>13:24<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>33:11<\/strong>\u2014see <strong>13:27<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>33:13<\/strong>\u2014saying God won\u2019t answer me is a form of contending against him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>33:14<\/strong>\u2014He <strong><u>does<\/u> <\/strong>answer, in multiple ways but people usually don\u2019t realize it. (Why won\u2019t God answer my prayers? This is typically used when someone hasn\u2019t received what they want when they want it. The idea of prayer being \u201canswered\u201d is applied in a narrow and inaccurate way when it only refers to one possible answer.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>33:15-18<\/strong>\u2014God uses dreams to warn and turn man away from evil, and take away foolish pride.<\/p>\n<p><strong>33:19-22<\/strong>\u2014the pain man experiences causes him to not want to live forever. You could say it keeps us from being foolish in the way of wanting our lives to go on forever on this earth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:23-26<\/strong>\u2014If there is a mediator for man to ask God to restore him and deliver him, man prays and God accepts him. God shows mercy that man doesn\u2019t deserve.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:27-28<\/strong>\u2014man knows it was God who saved him and was merciful. He didn\u2019t get what he deserved.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:29-30<\/strong>\u2014God does this repeatedly with man, to keep him from death, and to make life enjoyable again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32:31-33<\/strong>\u2014Elihu pauses to make sure Job is with him and encourages him to speak if he has words. If not, he will continue to teach Job wisdom.<\/p>\n<h2>Chapter 34, Elihu<\/h2>\n<p><strong>34:2-4<\/strong>\u2014Listen up everyone. Let us be in agreement with what is good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:5-6<\/strong>\u2014Job has said he has done nothing wrong. Despite my integrity, God has done this to me and I\u2019m considered a liar. I can do nothing to save myself but I\u2019m innocent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:7-8<\/strong>\u2014Job\u2019s words mark him as a scoffer and companion of evildoers because\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:9<\/strong>\u2014Job seems to think it\u2019s no use to delight in God<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:10<\/strong>\u2014Listen up everyone\u2014wise men\u2014God doesn\u2019t act wrongly or wickedly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:11<\/strong>\u2014God repays man according to man\u2019s works and ways<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:12<\/strong>\u2014God doesn\u2019t pervert justice (<strong>8:3<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:13<\/strong>\u2014rhetorical question\u2014who put God in charge???<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:14-15<\/strong>\u2014if God wanted, he could take his breath back to himself, and as he gathered it all people would perish. God supplies life (<strong>10:12, 33:3<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:17<\/strong>\u2014Will you put God (who is righteous and mighty) in the wrong?<\/p>\n<p><strong>***<\/strong>How many people blame God for man\u2019s evil? How many people believe the reasoning that there CAN\u2019T be a just God in charge of this messed up evil world? How does the blame always get placed on God?<strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>34:18-20<\/strong>\u2014God shows no partiality toward men who might hide behind their titles or positions (the governing and ruling). God declares the true state of their lives. God gives and takes life; it\u2019s up to him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:21-23<\/strong>\u2014God sees everything man does. There\u2019s no hiding it from God. This is why God has no need to consider a man any further\u2014he already knows all that a person has done.<\/p>\n<p><strong>***<\/strong>Does God need to think twice? The old rule of measure twice, cut once is for man, not God. Man makes mistakes and even skilled craftsmen follow this simple rule, but God doesn\u2019t make mistakes.<strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>34:24<\/strong>\u2014God gets rid of the mighty and replaces them. There isn\u2019t any investigation that we need to see. God has acted because God knows and has decided, and so it will be.<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:25<\/strong>\u2014God overturns the wicked in the night, the time of day the wicked choose to carry out their evil deeds thinking nobody will see. <strong>24:13-17<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:26-27<\/strong>\u2014the wicked tried to act in secret, but God will destroy them in front of everyone since they turned aside and went their own way<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:28<\/strong>\u2014the afflicted cry out to God in their distress and he hears them<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:29<\/strong>\u2014if God decides to act in a way that man doesn\u2019t understand or agree with, man has no power to change it. God does what he pleases<strong>; Psalm 135:6<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>34:30<\/strong>\u2014God won\u2019t tolerate wickedness indefinitely. He knows wicked people, especially wicked rulers, will lead others astray.<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:31-32<\/strong>\u2014nobody is acquitted because they simply say \u201cI\u2019m sorry, I won\u2019t do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:33<\/strong>\u2014does God allow you to define how you will pay for your transgressions?<\/p>\n<p><strong>34:34-37<\/strong>\u2014wise men will say Job doesn\u2019t speak with knowledge.
