{"id":6653,"date":"2019-07-22T16:08:01","date_gmt":"2019-07-22T21:08:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/?page_id=6653"},"modified":"2019-07-22T17:17:44","modified_gmt":"2019-07-22T22:17:44","slug":"zophar-job-and-eliphaz","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/bible-studies\/job\/zophar-job-and-eliphaz\/","title":{"rendered":"Zophar, Job, and Eliphaz"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\t<h1>Class 6, Chapters 20-23<\/h1>\n<h2>Chapter 20, Zophar<\/h2>\n<p><strong>20:2<\/strong>\u2014maybe Zophar is being sarcastic toward Job because of what was said in <strong>19:29<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>20:3<\/strong>\u2014I have understanding; it\u2019s what motivates me to speak<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:4-5<\/strong>\u2014it is (and has been for a long time) self-evident that the joy of the wicked is short and quickly cut off.<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:6-7<\/strong>\u2014however great you become in this life, your end is like dung. Nobody will care or remember you<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:8-9<\/strong>\u2014he will quickly depart and people who saw him will no longer. His home won\u2019t see him either.<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:10<\/strong>\u2014His children are brought low and have to appeal to the poor for a favor. Zophar says his hands will give back his wealth, implying he didn\u2019t rightfully own it anyway<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:11<\/strong>\u2014he is cut off before his time, before living a \u201cfull life\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:12-15<\/strong>\u2014the wicked man holds onto evil with his words and greedily swallows riches. They don\u2019t belong to him so God causes him to vomit them up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:16<\/strong>\u2014he might die from a snake. Zophar would see it fitting since he accused Job of hiding evil under his tongue, which is the venom of cobras.<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:17<\/strong>\u2014he won\u2019t see the wonderful things God made<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:18<\/strong>\u2014he will hand over what he has made because\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:19<\/strong>\u2014he stole it anyway and oppressed the poor!<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:20<\/strong>\u2014you are never happy with what you have and indulge every impulsive desire to feed your appetites<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:21<\/strong>\u2014you greedily consumed all of what you had. None was left for anyone else. You are on a downward spiral; this isn\u2019t sustainable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:22<\/strong>\u2014everyone will come after you in your peak<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:23<\/strong>\u2014God will satisfy your appetite\u2014by raining his burning anger into your body.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Zophar is implying Job\u2019s sores to be a fulfillment of this statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:24-26<\/strong>\u2014he will die a nasty death and be devoured. His riches will have no future<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:27<\/strong>\u2014heaven and earth will be witnesses and pursuers of him<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:28<\/strong>\u2014some of Job\u2019s possessions <strong><u>WERE<\/u><\/strong> carried away<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:29<\/strong>\u2014Zophar declares his speech to have God\u2019s endorsement behind it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chapter 21, Job<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>***<\/strong>Most of Job\u2019s friends&#8217; points in the second cycle of conversation (Chapters 13-21) use points Job makes and uses them against him. In the first cycle, they each made their own points which they had probably concluded on in their own thoughts and their talks with each other on their way to meet Job. They have shifted to remembering things he says throughout his speeches to use against him when they speak.<strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>21:2-3<\/strong>\u2014Just listen and then you can make fun of me when I\u2019m done.<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:4<\/strong>\u2014it\u2019s not toward a human that I have an issue. <strong>***<\/strong>If it were at least I could talk to them about it and maybe come to an agreement.<strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>21:5-6<\/strong>\u2014when you look at me with that appalling look it reminds me of my miserable state<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:7<\/strong>\u2014Psalm 73, Asaph\u2019s complaint<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:8<\/strong>\u2014at odds with what Job said in <strong>14:21-22<\/strong>\u2014although it\u2019s talking about the wicked<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:9-13<\/strong>\u2014the wicked have it easy and seem to receive special treatment. God doesn\u2019t punish them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:14-15<\/strong>\u2014The wicked\u2019s attitude toward God<\/p>\n<p><strong>***Prideful idolaters***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>21:16<\/strong>\u2014It\u2019s up to them to prosper and they do; God doesn\u2019t hold <strong><em><u>them<\/u><\/em><\/strong> back<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:17-18<\/strong>\u2014do the wicked <strong>EVER<\/strong> have to pay for their ways?? How often do they suffer for their choices??<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:19-20<\/strong>\u2014I\u2019m not seeing the proof of your claim that God repays the wicked. Let\u2019s see it!<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:21<\/strong>\u2014the wicked are as apathetic as they are anything else. They don\u2019t care about their families (compare to how Job made sacrifices for his children after feasts in case they had a wrong <strong>THOUGHT<\/strong> about God)<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:22<\/strong>\u2014I\u2019m not sure of the meaning of the verse in relation to its placement in the speech<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:23-27<\/strong>\u2014No matter what everyone dies alike; it all seems to be the same<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:27-28<\/strong>\u2014I know what you\u2019re thinking, saying \u201cBut oh what happened to the house of the prince?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:29-30<\/strong>\u2014Haven\u2019t you guys heard? What are people saying out there on roads you travel? News flash, the wicked get off easy!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:31<\/strong>\u2014who will even tell him what is plainly obvious? Who repays him?<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:32-33<\/strong>\u2014Even in death he is favored<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:34<\/strong>\u2014You guys couldn\u2019t tell the truth to save your lives. You only tell lies; that\u2019s all you have left.<\/p>\n<h2>Chapter 22, Eliphaz<\/h2>\n<p><strong>22:2<\/strong>\u2014what can a man do for God? How can he benefit from a mere man? You can help yourself (the things man finds profitable differ from what God does)<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:3<\/strong>\u2014is it any pleasure to the Almighty if you are in the right? (Obviously, with how highly God spoke of Job he DID have joy because of him). Whatever God gains from the interaction with him and satan, probably <strong><u>glory<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>22:4<\/strong>\u2014it <strong><u>IS<\/u><\/strong> Job\u2019s fear of God although it isn\u2019t God\u2019s reproof nor has God entered into judgment with Job.<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:5<\/strong>\u2014Eliphaz is sure of Job\u2019s evil from this rhetorical question followed by his statement in the second half of the verse<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:6<\/strong>\u2014You have extorted your family and took what little the needy had; the accusation is that Job is a swindler<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:7<\/strong>\u2014you failed to provide the most basic necessities despite your vast resources. Job is greedy and selfish, uncaring for the needy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>***<\/strong>Isn\u2019t this a common accusation toward the wealthy, that they hate and rob the poor? The accusers who believe this rhetoric are usually only using the poor as pawns in their ongoing feud against \u201cthe rich\u201d, who they also automatically label \u201cthe oppressors\u201d.<strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>22:8<\/strong>\u2014The mighty owned the land and the favored live in it<\/p>\n<p><strong>***<\/strong>This accusation is nauseatingly similar to the arguments declaring the good fortune and success of some people to be a result of \u201cprivilege\u201d. This is simply too short-sighted and agenda-driven to objectively examine where a person\u2019s success comes from. It\u2019s usually easier for malcontents to condemn someone in a group they call the \u201cprivileged\u201d than examine their narrative and acknowledge it may be flawed.<strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>22:9<\/strong>\u2014you wouldn\u2019t help the broken-hearted in tough situations. Job, you are heartless.<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:10-11<\/strong>\u2014All of this is why you are in the situation you\u2019re in, Job<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:12-14<\/strong>\u2014God <strong><em>is<\/em><\/strong> high and mighty, but you seem to think he can\u2019t see all the way down to earth from his lofty abode.<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:15<\/strong>\u2014are you going to follow the well-worn often traveled path of evildoers?<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:16<\/strong>\u2014sometimes used as a possible timeline indicator for the events of Job. Some who study the book say this could allude to these events taking place after the flood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:17<\/strong>\u2014see <strong>21:14<\/strong>; same as Job\u2019s point in the previous chapter<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:18<\/strong>\u2014God blessed you in spite of your wickedness and you declare the counsel of the wicked is far from you??<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:19-20<\/strong>\u2014righteous people are glad at the wicked\u2019s troubles\u2014it\u2019s about time! Nothing of what they had will be left!<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:21-23<\/strong>\u2014don\u2019t be at odds with God anymore. This is the way for your life to be good again. Go back to his instructions and meditate on them. Remove injustice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:24-25<\/strong>\u2014Give up your vain riches and then God will be what you value.<\/p>\n<p><strong>***<\/strong>Chapter 1 doesn\u2019t mention Job losing any gold. It might be the only wealth he has left and Eliphaz thinks Job cares about it more than God.<strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>22:26-27<\/strong>\u2014you will delight in God and he will hear you again<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:28<\/strong>\u2014you will have control over your own life again and you will act in an upright way<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:29<\/strong>\u2014if someone is brought low you say it\u2019s their own fault (Job\u2019s friends are excluded, apparently). Eliphaz is accusing Job of the thing which he, Bildad and Zophar have been doing for most of the conversation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>22:30<\/strong>\u2014God even saves sinners\u2014ones just like you, Job<\/p>\n<h2>Chapter 23, Job<\/h2>\n<p><strong>23:2<\/strong>\u2014may indicate another day has passed. It could be the morning and Job begins to speak.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23:3-4<\/strong>\u2014now Job <strong>doesn\u2019t even want an intercessor<\/strong> to speak to God on his behalf (<strong>16:21<\/strong>). He wants to go personally to God\u2019s throne and present his case directly to God himself. This is quite a leap from <strong>9:3<\/strong> and <strong>9:12<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>23:5<\/strong>\u2014I can comprehend the wisdom of God.<\/p>\n<p><strong>***9:10-11<\/strong>\u2014Job couldn\u2019t understand what God was up to but now he has no doubts he can understand it all.<strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>23:6-7<\/strong>\u2014he wouldn\u2019t fight against me. I have confidence that anyone upright could argue their case before him and I would be acquitted if I were to do this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23:8-9<\/strong>\u2014but here on earth I just can\u2019t understand what God is doing. He is active and moving but how would I know anything about what he\u2019s doing?<\/p>\n<p><strong>23:10<\/strong>\u2014God knows all about my ways. I\u2019ll be fine and come out on the other side of this trial.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23:11-12<\/strong>\u2014I\u2019ve been walking according to his will and haven\u2019t turned aside. His words are better for me than food.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23:13<\/strong>\u2014what God wants, God gets. What he plans, he does.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23:14<\/strong>\u2014whatever this is, God will complete his whole plan for me. God is thinking of me and the plans he has for me. In <strong>10:13<\/strong> Job feels that God\u2019s purpose for this situation was to judge him guilty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23:15-16\u2014see 9:34<\/strong>\u2014despite Job\u2019s brief stint of confidence he admits he is terrified of God.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23:17<\/strong>\u2014I won\u2019t be silent because of this awful situation.
