{"id":10169,"date":"2019-09-20T14:40:51","date_gmt":"2019-09-20T19:40:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/?page_id=10169"},"modified":"2024-05-14T20:48:31","modified_gmt":"2024-05-15T01:48:31","slug":"the-church-in-antioch","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/bible-studies\/acts-of-the-apostles\/the-church-in-antioch\/","title":{"rendered":"The Church in Antioch"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<h1>The Church in Antioch<\/h1>\n<br \/>\n<p>Text: Acts 11:19-30<\/p>\n<p>I.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;The text of Acts now switches to focus on Saul, who later is known as Paul.<\/p>\nII.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;The persecution that started with the death of Stephen has scattered Christians beyond the\nboundaries of Israel. They have gone to Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;A.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;However, the scattered Christians only spoke to fellow Jews.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;B.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Except in Antioch. There some from Cyprus and Cyrene began to teach Greeks.<\/p>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;1.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Hence, this became the first congregation founded with both Jews and\nGreeks.\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;2.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;It grew rapidly<\/p>\nIII.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Word of the new congregation reached the church in Jerusalem and Barnabas was sent to\ngive them aid.\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;A.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Remember Barnabas had the nickname &#8220;son of encouragement.&#8221; He was the\nperfect man to help with a new work.\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;B.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;He lived up to his name. After arriving, he was filled with joy at the work that was\naccomplished and began to encourage them further to remain true to the truth.\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;C.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;The congregation continued to grow and Barnabas realized that he needed help.<\/p>\nIV.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Barnabas left to fetch Saul, the man he introduced to the church in Jerusalem. Saul at this\ntime was in Tarsus, his home town.\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;A.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Saul returned with Barnabas and they worked together in Antioch for an entire\nyear.\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;B.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;The church grew greatly and had the honor of being the first place where the\ndisciples were called Christians.\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;1.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;It is noteworthy because it fulfilled a prophesy in Isaiah 62:2<\/p>\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;C.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Other came from Jerusalem, included prophets.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;1.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;One, named Agabus, told of a worldwide famine that would come.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;2.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;It was fulfilled in the reign of Claudius.<\/p>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;3.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Jerusalem was especially affected by the famine and brethren from\nAntioch sent funds to Jerusalem to relieve the brethren there.\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;a.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Saul and Barnabas were chosen as the messengers for this gift.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/bible-studies\/acts-of-the-apostles\/trouble-back-in-jerusalem\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPrior Lesson\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/bible-studies\/acts-of-the-apostles\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tActs of the Apostles\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/bible-studies\/acts-of-the-apostles\/herod\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNext Lesson\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Church in Antioch Text: Acts 11:19-30 I.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;The text of Acts now switches to focus on Saul, who later is known as Paul.
