{"id":10025,"date":"2019-09-19T17:53:20","date_gmt":"2019-09-19T22:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/?page_id=10025"},"modified":"2024-03-19T20:17:52","modified_gmt":"2024-03-20T01:17:52","slug":"introduction-and-the-ascension-of-jesus","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/bible-studies\/acts-of-the-apostles\/introduction-and-the-ascension-of-jesus\/","title":{"rendered":"Introduction and the Ascension of Jesus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t  \t<h1>Introduction and the Ascension of Jesus     <\/h1>\n<br \/>\n<p>Text: Acts 1:1-11<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>I.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;The book of Acts is a continuation of the book of Luke (Luke 1:3)<\/p>\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;A.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Both books are addressed to Theophilus.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;B.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;It is important to know the author as he refers to himself in the text.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;C.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Like Luke, the book is noted for its detailed historical accuracy.<\/p>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;1.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Despite being written in an era when political boundaries constantly\nchanged and various people came in and out of office, his account was\nalways correct.\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;2.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;The book is the history of the establishment and spread of Christianity<\/p>\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;D.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;The introduction reminds Theophilus of what the first book described<\/p>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;1.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Luke covers the life and teachings of Jesus up until ascended after giving\ninstructions to his apostles\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;2.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;He had also proved to these same men that he was alive by many\nconvincing proofs.\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;3.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;He spoke with them over a period of 40 days and gave them further\ninstructions concerning his kingdom, the church.\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;4.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Since his death, the new covenant could now go into effect &#8211; Hebrews\n9:16-17\n<p>II.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Jesus then instructed his apostles to remain in Jerusalem until they receive the promise<\/p>\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;A.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;The promise was given in John 16:5-15<\/p>\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;B.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;The promise would be fulfilled within a few days.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;C.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;There was also a promise to build his church &#8211; Matthew 16:18<\/p>\n<p>III.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Even now the disciples did not understand Jesus&#8217; purpose<\/p>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;A.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;They wanted to know if he would be setting up his physical kingdom on earth\nsoon, restoring Israel to her glory.\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;B.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Jesus responded that it wasn&#8217;t for man to know the plans of God.<\/p>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;C.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Soon they would receive the Spirit of God and they would become Jesus&#8217;s\nwitnesses, starting in Jerusalem and reaching to the remotest parts of the earth.\n<p>IV.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;While speaking with them, he arose in the air, disappearing in a cloud.<\/p>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;A.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;While they gazed in wonder, two angels appeared and asked why they were\nstaring into the sky.\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;B.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;They said that Jesus would return in the same manner as he left (with the clouds).<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/bible-studies\/acts-of-the-apostles\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tActs of the Apostles\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavistachurchofchrist.org\/cms\/bible-studies\/acts-of-the-apostles\/replacing-judas\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNext Lesson\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Introduction and the Ascension of Jesus Text: Acts 1:1-11 &#160;
