In Genesis 41:16, when Pharaoh asks Joseph to interpret his dream, Joseph replies, "It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh the answer." This is a profound statement about the source of wisdom. Joseph stands before the most powerful man in the world, yet he refuses to claim credit for the insight he’s about to give. He understands that neither revelation nor its understanding is a human achievement.

This is a pattern throughout Scripture. God is the One who reveals, guides, and grants understanding. Joseph’s humility reflects a heart that knows its dependence. He doesn’t elevate himself because he knows the true source of his ability.

This teaches us something essential about serving God. Our gifts, insights, and strengths are not self-generated. They are entrusted to us for God’s purposes. When we acknowledge Him as the source, we position ourselves to be used more fully.

If you’re seeking direction or trying to help others find it, begin where Joseph begins. Look to God for wisdom. He delights in giving clarity to those who recognize their need for Him.

I honestly believe that I took her far too much for granted since she was the epitome of what a grandmother ought to be, and I didn't truly grasp the depth of the blessing that God gave me by giving me to her as a grandchild. Reminiscing with my family afterward helped me put things into perspective, including what sort of things she commonly did that were really out of the ordinary and were testaments to her godly character. For example, it was normal for her to give up her bed to my parents when we would travel down for a visit. As a child, that just seemed to be what people did, and I never really thought to question them. But how many people routinely give up their own bed to visitors?

That evening, I decided that I will be endeavoring to pay more attention to those God has blessed me with in my life and not take them for granted so that I may both be thankful for them for who they are and all that they do and that I may better love and appreciate them as God would have me do. After all, if you read through Paul’s letters, how often did he thank God for the brethren?

“First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world” (Romans 1:8).

“I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus ...” (I Corinthians 1:4).

“For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you and your love for all the saints, do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in my prayers; that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him“ (Ephesians 1:15-17).

"I thank my God in all my remembrance of you ..." (Philippians 1:3).

“We give thanks to God always for all of you, making mention of you in our prayers …” (I Thessalonians 1:2).

“We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brethren, as is only fitting, because your faith is greatly enlarged, and the love of each one of you toward one another grows ever greater ...” (II Thessalonians 1:3).

“But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth” (II Thessalonians 2:13).

“I thank my God always, making mention of you in my prayers ...” (Philemon 1:4).

Earlier this holiday afternoon, I had an epiphany while feasting with a few members of my Christian family and my parents. You see, through the last year, I had a friend that God brought into my life, temporarily, it seems, who had a deep impact on me, proving to be a great catalyst for my growth in Christ. I’ve had a hard time letting go, largely because I recognized that God was behind our friendship, and it’s been many years since I had that strong of a friend.

How deeply do we feel that each of us here in this church is our God-given friend? What about our brethren in other congregations who we only see occasionally, if not only once?

Are we taking each other for granted? Are we taking our Christian family—our parents, siblings, spouses, and children—for granted? God gave them to us. Am I taking them for granted, or am I investing time and energy into getting to know them, appreciating them, and loving them as God would have me do?

I know I have failed in that.

When someone says, “I’m thankful,” to whom is this person thankful? Thankfulness is an expression of gratitude or appreciation, but to make sense, it must be directed to one who has given or made the circumstances possible in which that expression finds meaning. Just saying, “I’m thankful,” into the air is pointless. Gratitude is meaningful when we recognize that one has given grace and feel indebtedness for it.

Christians, of all people, should feel that sense of gratitude and, therefore, be thankful to God for what He has given. “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:15-16).

The grace of God through Jesus Christ is one of the most powerful concepts to consider. We stand in the grace of God as we have peace (reconciliation) with Him (Romans 5:1-5). As great as this is, it is also a concept that can be twisted, perverted, and become a license to sin (Romans 6:1-5; Jude 4). This is why we must understand the grace of God in truth (Colossians 1:3-6).

Since God has offered it to us, our response needs to be gratitude and thankfulness so that we will “continue in the grace of God” (Acts 13:43). Our confidence is to be in the Lord and the promises He makes. Then our hope is firm and steadfast, the anchor of the soul (Hebrews 6:19). Our loyalty and faithfulness must be firm as well, never casting away our confidence in Him (Hebrews 10:35).

How we think about God and our level of gratitude are connected. If we think about God respectfully and remember what He has done and continues to do, we will be grateful. How can we not be? Paul makes this connection in Romans 1:21-22. In a context where he is speaking about those who have given up God, he writes, “For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools…” Honoring God and giving thanks are interwoven. Conversely, failing to be thankful indicates a lack of honor for God, which leads to futile thought and action.

There is, arguably, an integral connection between a lack of gratitude and an attitude of entitlement. If we think that we ought to be treated in a special manner or that people ought to give us things, then why should we be thankful to those who give us what we think we deserve? We are entitled, so why the need to be grateful? Yet we know there is something particularly egregious about this kind of attitude. The ungrateful cannot see when grace has been given because they don’t see their need for it. Grace has no place for them, and because grace is shunned, so is a thankful spirit.

David DeSilva points out, “Generosity was a highly valued characteristic in people in the Hellenistic and Roman periods.” Just as important was the attitude of those who were on the receiving end of a gift. While a giver was not to act out of self-interest, “The recipient should be a virtuous person who will honor the generosity and kindness behind the gift, who would value more the continuing relationship with the giver than any particular gift.” The “gift must always be met with gratitude” [Honor, Patronage, Kinship & Purity, pgs. 105-108].

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Our response to this gift speaks volumes about how we view both the gift and the Giver. No amount of work that we do will ever make up for it, for all we can say, after doing what God asks of us, is, “We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty” (Luke 17:10). Humility, praise, and gratefulness should flow from our hearts.

How much do we value our relationship with the God who has given, not just a few gifts, but Himself as a sacrifice to atone for our sins? Christians value salvation and ought to be eternally grateful for what God has done to make forgiveness viable. Yet we ought not to value only the gift of salvation but also the Giver Himself — the God who made us in His image and wants us to be in fellowship with Him. Our thankfulness, then, goes beyond thanking God for forgiveness (as great as that is). Our thankfulness is for God Himself. “Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; let those who love your salvation continually say, ‘God is great!’” (Psalms 70:4).

Being thankful is a continual attitude that should characterize us no matter what else is going on in our lives. This is one of the reasons that Christians ought not to be given to grumbling and complaining (Philippians 2:14), for this demonstrates a lack of gratitude and focuses more on our circumstances and lack of contentment. A lack of gratitude is more a sign of selfishness and a corollary to a lack of love. Thankfulness should be pervasive and consistent, as Paul indicated:

“Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Colossians 3:16-17).

The Hebrews writer also makes an interesting connection: “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful. By it, we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe” (Hebrews 12:28). The link here is that our service to God with reverence and awe flows out of our gratitude for God and His mercy toward us. We cannot serve God acceptably or have proper respect for Him if we do not maintain the gratitude (grace) in our hearts.

Connecting our last two passages (Colossians 3 and Hebrews 12) would show that our praise and worship of God are always to be attended by thankfulness and gratitude. This goes beyond assemblies to our daily offering up of ourselves as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1-2). Indeed, we are to “give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (I Thessalonians 5:18).

“Give thanks to him and bless his name. For the LORD is good, and his faithful love endures forever; his faithfulness, through all generations” (Psalms 100:4-5).

Paul says, "this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (I Thessalonians 5:18). This is what God wants. He doesn't want us to spend our time complaining and griping. Such a negative disposition! His will is that we spend our time "giving thanks" but doing so "in everything."

In everything?

I look back now to my younger teen years where I hated myself because I was so timid and shy, especially around girls. But now I am thankful I was because it kept me out of a lot of trouble. If I had been wise, I would not have needed that ball and chain, but I was not wise, and God put the wonderful gift of shyness in my life to help compensate for my lack of wisdom and help me get through those years without ruining my life and someone else's. Today, I am thankful that I was shy. It didn't seem enjoyable at all at the time, but now I see the value. It protected me and others.

Another thing about self-hatred is that it is not wise because it devalues what God highly values. I did not like myself, but I learned enough from God's word to know that I should not destroy myself just because I did not like certain characteristics about myself. So, the ball and chain I carried so grievously were strengthening me in other ways.

My shyness helped me in multiple ways that I was not wise enough to appreciate. It also challenged me to work harder to overcome my internal fears and insecurities. It is the will of God that we look for ways to turn our negatives into positive things for which to be thankful. I'm thankful for lessons learned the hard way. At least I learned and grew. There are difficult tasks and obstacles in life, but always an opportunity to grow deeper in compassion for others, in depth of love and commitment. The "trying of your faith works patience" (James 1:2-6).

See the positive? No? Train your outlook to look for the positive that comes attached to that negative. In everything "give thanks." What a wonderful way to enjoy life! Who wants to go through this short journey of life looking at everything so negatively? That is a miserable life. It is the will of God that we look for ways to be thankful in everything. Train your mind and heart to give thanks to God every day. Thank God even for those unanswered prayers uttered in selfish lack of knowledge and wisdom. Sometimes even those turn out to be great outcomes. You may have to pray a lot for wisdom, but always find the positive and give thanks daily.
