You keep
scrolling in anticipation of the next rewarding piece of content, creating a
cycle that can be difficult to break. This is a core element of the
psychology behind scrolling and a major reason why it can feel so
compulsive.” [“The Psychology of the Scroll: How Social Media Quietly

From fake friends to fake intimacy, today’s world is full of illusions that keep us from living the life God actually designed for us. Phones, games, and the internet aren’t evil—but they can easily become traps. Many people, even adults, are trading genuine purpose, love, and connection for pixels and pretend experiences. Jesus warned about this kind of deception long before smartphones existed. He called us to live real lives—pure, grounded, and devoted to God. If you’re tired of fake living and ready to rediscover what’s real, this message from Scott Smelser will challenge and encourage you. Scott shares wisdom in these areas:

Everyone does not want to hear God’s word. Jesus lets each person determine their destiny and therefore lets each person pick his own interest in truth or error. He did not waste time “casting pearls before swine” (Matt.7:6). When a person reveals that they have no inclination to hear the truth of God’s word, it is useless to keep putting the truth before them. They will only “trample” the pearls of truth underfoot, turning again and reviling you.

Facebook is an interesting arrangement. People can ignore what you present and move on to things that interest them, or they can choose to read what you present and respond. Occasionally, someone will “turn again and rend you” rather than ignore and move on. They also have the option to block or unfriend you if they really hate the light you are sharing. Jesus said some will hate the light (John 3:19ff). Jesus had many who hated Him because “men loved darkness rather than light.”

Telling God’s truth can separate truth lovers from truth haters. Jesus kept telling the truth and let people determine their own appreciation for it. He did not stop speaking truth to appease the truth haters, but He let them decide if they would come to hear what He said. Likewise, on Facebook, we must continue to hold up the truth, even though it may cause some to unfriend us, ignore us, or speak evil of us. That is their choice and their prerogative.

We can only offer the truth. Some will be more noble-minded and “search the scriptures whether these things are so” (Acts 17:11). The Bereans were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica. Apparently, there were many prejudiced, tradition-bound people who were not lovers of truth in that area. They loved their traditions and did not want truth rocking their boat. Paul wrote to the Thessalonians and commented about people who are condemned “because they received not the love of the truth” (II Thessalonians 2:13), but those who continue in Jesus’ word will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:30-31). Truth is God’s means of sanctifying (John 17:17), separating out the saved from the lost.

Be sure you are among those who love the truth! Eternity depends on your love of the truth.

Please note that these are thoughts I’m mulling over for my own growth and attitude as I think about culture. If you disagree with anything here, that’s fine. I ask for respect and consideration, but you are also perfectly free to ignore this. This is in first person because they really are notes to myself about reacting to things I might struggle with or disagree with. These are my intentions.

I don’t have to comment on every post I disagree with. People will be okay without my input. I can walk away and move on to something else. People will be people, for good or ill.

When I first hear something, I need to give it the benefit of the doubt instead of having knee-jerk reactions. I must stop, contemplate, think it through, and then respond (or not) accordingly.

If I think someone should be canceled because I disagree with something said, I don’t really believe in freedom of speech. I believe in freedom only insofar as I like it. This reveals an insecurity in my thinking because rather than respectfully disagreeing, making an actual argument, or just moving on, I want to assert my view and silence any opposition.

Trying to get people fired from a job because they differ from me is a form of bullying. This is especially true if the person I’m trying to oust is not even remotely part of my life. I’m trying to hurt someone who said something that affects nothing in my daily routine. This reveals a bitterness on my part and does not bode well for having any kind of open-mindedness. In this case, I only want to hear what I agree with because I can’t tolerate diverse views. This is unacceptable. If I have an actual argument, I will make it without threatening others in the process.

To promote inclusion and tolerance and then exclude those who believe something I don’t like is hypocrisy. “Inclusion” comes to mean “people who agree with me.” This is irrational and causes me to lose my credibility for reasonable discussion. In such cases, I am not for freedom of speech or inclusion. However, I also recognize that we should exclude those influences that are morally reprehensible and dangerous (cf. Ephesians 5:11), but that’s another discussion. I don’t believe in including sin, even though I have failed at that.

If I react to something without reading it in full or hearing it out first, I am being foolish. I need reminding of Proverbs 18:13. If I’m reacting to headlines and not carefully considering what was actually said or done, I do not deserve a place at the table of discussion until I back off and do my due diligence. I need to be able to consider the possibility that I am wrong about something and willing to change if the evidence warrants it.

If I see a shocking headline, I need to remind myself that there is a great deal of satire out there, and I must not conflate these things with real news. This is one reason why reacting too quickly is a problem. I must be careful about what I accept as true in the media and social media. If I get worked up about something that is not even true, I will have benefited no one. This hurts everyone.

If someone disagrees with me, I will not be morally outraged by it. I need to be willing to discuss calmly. I will make my arguments and try to persuade, but just getting mad because someone takes a view different from mine is neither rational nor conducive to understanding one another. It’s a form of arrogance on my part.

I will not engage in hurling insults at those who disagree with me. I need to be respectful and honorable. I want there to be peace, understanding, and mutual respect. This needs to start with me. And even if they insult me, I will refuse to reciprocate the ugly and inappropriate. Think about Jesus.

I will avoid passing on gossip about others. I don’t want to hurt someone just because I may disagree with them. I want to treat others as I would like to be treated. If I am truly concerned about a situation, I need to be willing to go to the person in question to minimize potential damage.

If I read a post like this and get angry because I am guilty of any of the above, I need to calm down, eat some fruit, and then join in a reasonable discussion without feeling scarred for life because someone differed with me. I need to quit taking things so personally, especially when those who differ with don’t even know I exist or care about my life.

Above all, and most importantly, I will seek to glorify God. I need to do all in the name of Christ and to the glory of God. I will rely on God’s word as the revealed standard from God and seek to please Him in all matters. I have failed, but I will not give up.

Answer:

Video recordings of worship services are not a replacement for actually attending services. The command is for Christians to gather together in a location.

"... when you come together as a church ..." (I Corinthians 11:18).

"... the whole church assembles together ..." (I Corinthians 14:23).

It is nice that those, who are unable to attend because of health reasons, are able to watch the worship of their brethren, but it is not a replacement for actually attending.

Since teaching is a part of worship, allowing non-Christians to see what worship is like and to listen to the messages being taught are good things.

Verse: John 12:43 (NASB 2020)- “...for they loved the approval of people rather than the approval of God.”

As a young man, it’s unsurprising to say that I carry many great desires that I want to do in my lifetime.

My current main goals include becoming a professional writer, a godly husband, pursuing an enjoyable and profitable career, obtaining a nice house for me and my future wife, developing a good sum of money to prepare for potential emergencies, and most of all, being a good and faithful servant to the Lord.

In my humble opinion, these goals are arguably fairly simple and straightforward. You might even say that some are pretty “ordinary”, “standard”, and “expected”.

Even with those descriptions, I still remain pretty content with what I have in mind. They’re not bombastic or exciting, nor will they guarantee me fame, wealth, and status in society. They are things that are within my capabilities to achieve, and I would love to in the future.

However, there always come some downtimes in my life. Whenever I am not working on these goals, I try to keep myself busy by doing at least the usual mundane chores that every independent person has to deal with while living out on their own.

Alongside that, I go help people with their various needs and participate in various good activities, and I also like to take opportunities to spend more time with my fellow brethren.

Yet, many would still see me as living a fairly unremarkable life. You could say that if I were to die today, the world would not even notice that I was dead. For all their concern, I was just another cog in the system and I just unfortunately bit the dust at a young age.

In my opinion, I’m quite okay with that idea. After all, I would still have heaven to look forward to. Some people, however, aren’t okay with that.

Now, naturally, over time, the more good things you do, the more you’ll become noticed by people, which will then lead to you meeting more people, thus the more connections you’ll form, and eventually the more successful, blessed, and well regarded you become.

Hopefully for you, this will be a journey that will be about setting a good and honest reputation (Proverbs 22:29). But, the frustrating part is that many folks don’t follow this basic idea.

Let me ask this question: What happens when a person becomes so self-centered and unsatisfied with life that they see being “ordinary” as an insult to their own perception of their self-worth? Even though they are already born in a life of luxury and pleasure, have already done numerous exciting things, have lots of friends and acquaintances, and they could virtually live the rest of their lives without having to work much?

Well, you end up getting someone who will still want to go far and beyond to make sure all eyes are on him. Someone like Logan Paul.

Logan Paul

As a 28-year-old social media personality, Logan is an extremely popular influencer on YouTube with a massive fanbase, and he's also one of the highest-paid creators on the platform.

Logan is mainly known for his content which consists of vlogs documenting his daily life and activities.

A quick look at his video library will show you some crazy, foolish, and even inappropriate behavior.

Based on his content, Logan comes off as nothing more than a shallow attention seeker with heavy narcissistic personality traits, who just happens to have lots of wealth and connections behind him to help him keep doing what he’s doing.

Because of this, this man has already been infamous in the YouTube community, but what he did in December 2017 would end up shocking the entire world.

One day, he uploaded a vlog where he and his friends decided to travel to a forest located in Japan to camp the night there.

Unbeknownst to all of them, they would unfortunately encounter a deceased man who had just hanged himself from a tree. His body was just about 100 yards away from the parking lot.

The video had the man’s face censored, but the rest of his body could still be clearly seen.

At first, Logan and his crew reacted in extreme shock, but it didn’t take long for them to start making jokes with smiles being visibly present and laughter being heard.

Eventually, the group did call the authorities to deal with the body, but Logan made a personal statement at the end of the video where he explained what happened after this and went on to encourage individuals to seek mental help. However, sad piano music was playing in the background while he was talking.

Suffice it to say, this video instantly exploded in popularity, and unsurprisingly, it was met with an immense amount of backlash.

The poor censoring of the body, the reaction by him and his friends, and the way the entire video was framed and edited led to millions of people criticizing Logan and his friends and demanding his entire channel be taken down.

Unfortunately, Logan’s channel was never suspended or deleted.

What’s worse is that Logan had the audacity to keep this video up for over a day, which garnered him over 6 million views before the video was taken down seemingly because the amount of hate was proving to be too much for him to handle.

Logan then followed up with an apology video in which he addressed the mistakes he made on that day, stating that he made a "severe and continuous lapse in judgment" and described his behavior as a "coping mechanism". He also asked his fans to stop defending his actions in the process.

This apology video garnered over 62 million views.

While the now-deleted vlog wasn’t monetized according to Logan, the apology video appeared to be. If it was, then he may have gotten anywhere between $10,000 to $100,000 in revenue from it. There has been significant speculation and suspicions surrounding this, but Logan has not denied or confirmed if he profited from it.

As a result, this incident is generally regarded as the most infamous event in YouTube history.

There’s a lot more that can be said about this event, but I just want to show you just how far people are willing to go to make a name for themselves and maintain it.

A solemn fact of this world is that because many people are told that the only real way to make a fulfilling life is to “make a name for yourself”, they take this as saying that this is a “dog-eat-dog” world and they got to keep pushing the boundaries to obtain more wealth, pleasure, and glory, even at the cost of harming others. All they could think about is: “When is my next big score?”

This mentality will gradually decay their moral compass and other critical characteristics that make us human, like empathy, respect, honor, dignity, humbleness, and love for ourselves, for others, and most importantly, for God.

A person who is never taught or bothers to care for and sympathize with their fellow man is doomed to not know the importance of being a good example for others. Far too many people do this and they never end up being able to properly handle the fame, power, and influence they have on others. This is why we as Christians must be the much-needed salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13).

I want to also make it known that everyone involved had, at the very least, several hours to go back to their hotels, review the footage, edit it, talk about it, and then make the final decision to upload it on YouTube. But instead, they decided to make a spectacle of this poor man so that they could gain a temporary boost in popularity.

It is clear as day that these people cared more about the shock value and the massive attention that this would garner them than showing any respect for the victim by not uploading any piece of that footage.

At least it can be said that they didn’t come out of this unscathed.

So, what can we take away from this? Let’s look at a few verses:

Philippians 2:3 says “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves;” When you have an excessive sense of importance in one's self and only care about yourself, you are bound to cause some trouble. Instead of doing this, form humility in your heart and remind yourself that you are just like other people and you must help them when they need it.

Ecclesiastes 4:13-16 talks about how eventually even the notable will age and the young will take over. Fame is not permanent. Eventually, people like Logan Paul will fall by the wayside of “importance” and a new generation will take root.

1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 talks about leading a quiet and proper life and not relying on outsiders of the church. In this case, don’t try to make yourself famous just to satisfy your ego.

Proverbs 22:1: “A good name is to be more desired than great wealth, favor is better than silver and gold.” This ties back to the beginning where I talked about what could result from you having such a basic lifestyle, but still carrying a high reputation. When you live that kind of life, there isn’t much you may have to worry about that will cause you to get distracted and fall into sin. Your mind is rooted on the ground of what really matters, and being poor while having a great standing with others is much better than being wealthy while having a notorious reputation.

Proverbs 22:4: “The reward of humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, honor, and life.” And eventually, whether in this life or the next, your efforts for doing good will be remembered by God and you will be rewarded in the end.

by Doy Moyer

Among the works of the flesh are strife, outbursts of anger, dissensions, and divisions (Galatians 5:20). There seems to be a great deal of this in the world, and that should not surprise us. But there also seems to be much of this among those claiming to follow Christ. I’d like to say that this is a surprise, but it’s not. Christians have long wrestled with being too influenced by the world and conforming to the attitudes and practices of the age (cf. Romans 12:1-2). Our lights are often dim because we partake of the darkness far more than we would like to admit.

We see this all over social media, which is, sadly, the most toxic of environments if we let ourselves get lost in its enticement. Disagreements quickly become divisive and anger-inducing, so the insults and derogatory insinuations begin. It’s difficult, it seems, to find discussions that are filled with grace, giving the benefit of any doubt, or believing the best intentions in others.

I get it. I’ve been guilty. And I know it’s hard to read something and get the full sense of what someone intends. We read what others say and hear it in our own voice, emphasize it as we think, and may well miss the point of what was meant. Many times I’ve thought that people go out of their way to swerve around the point and miss it entirely. Whatever it takes, don’t hit the point!

I’m being slightly facetious, but not by much. The irony does not escape me. We all make judgments about what others mean and how they mean it. We all have those “bad days” where we are in a bad place and easily snap at others because we take something the wrong way. It is in those times I have to remind myself that “this” is not the best time for me to say anything, for “a fool’s anger is known at once” (Proverbs 12:16). It’s hard to let an insult go and not respond in kind — or even respond at all (cf. Proverbs 26:4-5).

That “at once” part gets me. People might spend hours writing and rewriting, studying and working through an issue, carefully wording what they want to say only to be rebuffed in an instant by someone who got immediately triggered — someone who did not study and gave little thought before firing back. Social media platforms do not distinguish. In a moment we can make our thoughts known, for good or ill.

We need to remember that our words have the power to encourage or discourage. We can lift up or pull down. We can help or hurt. I know that not everything posted is great and sometimes we need someone who can provide a gentle rebuke. May I offer some suggestions when thinking about entering a conversation with potential disagreement?

Give the benefit of the doubt. Assume the best first. Assume that the other means well and intends to do something beneficial to others. Be gracious and kind upfront.

If you disagree, sometimes (maybe most of the time) it’s okay to just move on. I don’t need to comment on everything I disagree with. I’d be most miserable if I did that, and it’s just not healthy mentally to spend all day online arguing and responding instantly to heated fusses.

If you feel the need to respond in strong disagreement (make sure this is really necessary), think about sending a private message first to ask about needed clarifications. I have been blessed by several who have done this with me, and this allowed me to make changes, clarify, and sometimes delete before it becomes a mess in the public arena.

Watch the words because words do mean something. Insults and evil surmising do not fit the child of God. We expect this from the world. It ought not to be so among us. We are family, not enemies.

The world is watching. They will see how we treat one another on social media. They will know whether what we profess is real and meaningful to us. They will see whether we love one another or bicker so much that we despise each other. (See John 13:34-35 and John 17:20-21 to see how important this is.)

The point? As Christians, let us not add to the toxicity of social media. Rather “Bless and do not curse” (Romans 12:14). By how we engage others, we can show the works of the flesh or the fruit of the Spirit. This matters eternally.

Answer:

Whenever a command is given, it sets limits. The command excludes certain things and includes others. It is much like the Venn diagrams we did in math classes. Some commands overlap, such as both individuals and the church offering up worship to God.

The church is commanded to spread the gospel. "So that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 3:10). This spreading of the Gospel can be done in a variety of ways: verbal or written; it is the communication that is being emphasized. Thus, the church supports preaching and teaching of the message in sermons, preaching in other areas of the world, Bible classes, articles, etc. The website is one aspect of this, as is the church's Facebook page. All you will find on either medium are teachings about the Bible and on rare occasions announcements about changes to the assembly times.

Like most congregations, we have a mailbox, a phone, as well as email to communicate with people. These are used to set up Bible studies and hold Bible studies with people I cannot physically be present with. But these are still being used under the command to spread the gospel.

Fellowship halls are used for socializing, especially for people eating together. Having common meals together is something authorized by God for individual Christians (Acts 2:46), but where is the command that it is required of the church to provide a facility for social gatherings? I can see in Acts 6 that the church provided food for widows and I Timothy 5 tells us that it was restricted to only certain widows who had no other family to care for them. None of these cover the typical use of a fellowship hall.

Notice also that your line of reasoning doesn't work. You are trying to find an exception to one rule so as to claim there can be exceptions to all rules.

Answer:

There are billboards along the highway that advertise things that I object to, but I don't stop using the highway. I don't expect secular companies to uphold Christian values, but I do use the opportunities these companies give to teach others. So I have a page on Facebook where I post articles from the church. I don't force it on anyone. People are free to follow it or not and still, I have several thousand watching it. In my own personal account, I try to post uplifting things to show what being a Christian is like. I have many friends who post thoughts from the Scriptures or short lessons for people to read on their personal pages.

Thus, consider what would help a person rethink their position. Too many Christians battle abortion with offensive images and graphic details. Personally, I don't want that in my life and those posts are blocked. But there are good loving reasons why abortion should not be considered, such as promoting adoption as a selfless gift to another couple, not holding an infant responsible for your own mistakes, and holding true appreciation for the value of life -- even when it is a personal inconvenience.

Answer:

There are churches like the one in La Vista in just about every state.

We use social media sites, like Facebook, to reach more people with the Gospel. It is no different than Paul entering the Jewish synagogues to teach after leaving Judaism. He went because that was a place you could find people interested in God. In the same way, we go where we can connect with people.

Yes, companies have been making money for decades by analyzing the behavior of people to determine what might sell. Stores do it with the shoppers who come in, car lots do it with the people who visit, phone companies do it with who you call and who calls you, social media does it with the data its users voluntarily provide, and the latest voice-activated remote controls do it by eavesdropping. It is the way life is and every user of such devices or services is warned that information is collected for the benefit of the company offering the services. I simply try to live a life that doesn't embarrass me if someone finds out what I do with my time.
