via Sentry Magazine, Vol. 19 No. 2, June 1993

"Or how can anyone enter the strong man’s house and carry off his property, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house" (Matthew 12:29).

Before Jesus came into this world, all people of accountable age were under the condemnation of sin, not because of Adam’s sin, but because they (each one) had sinned and therefore had been separated from God. Every soul had come under the power of Satan by virtue of the effectiveness of his deceptive work. Satan could rightly claim that every soul belonged to him. Man was utterly helpless, in and of himself, to redeem himself. Satan reigned supreme in this world.

This is where the grace of God came in. God, in his love and mercy, sent forth Jesus Christ as His beloved Son for the very purpose of suffering the pangs of spiritual death as a sacrifice for all mankind. He suffered the penalty of spiritual death, which was due to all of us. Jesus had no sin Himself, but He took our sins upon His spotless soul and died as a sinner in our place.

When Jesus came into the world, He entered the "strong man’s house" (Satan’s realm). Satan was the ruler of this world (John 12:31). He had everyone under his control because all had bowed to his rule. When Jesus came to redeem man, He had to challenge and defeat Satan (the strong man) to accomplish His purpose. Jesus would have to defeat him in open conflict before He could "carry off his property" (free those who were his captives). This is precisely what Jesus did.

Satan tried on several occasions to defeat the purpose of Jesus by putting Him to death. He finally succeeded when the Jewish rulers prevailed upon the Roman authorities to have Him crucified. By putting Jesus to death, Satan had delivered his "Sunday punch," his most devastating blow. He must have been celebrating and congratulating himself on what he thought was the final and ultimate victory. But on the third day (after his burial), Jesus came forth from the tomb, alive, never to experience death again. In His resurrection, He triumphed over all the power of Satan. "He had disarmed the rulers and authorities and He made a public display of them" (Colossians 2:15). He destroyed Satan’s power over death and provided everyone a means of victory (Hebrews 2:14). It is now Jesus who has the power over death (Revelation 1:18).

While it is true that Satan succeeded in putting Jesus to death, in reality Jesus gave His life willingly for you and for me, for all mankind (Hebrews 2:9). While Satan thought he had gained the complete victory in putting Jesus to death, it was by the means of that death and His resurrection that Jesus destroyed the power of Satan and gained the freedom of those held captive.

It is clear that Jesus came, entered the "strong man’s house," and attacked the strong man. Since Jesus was stronger than the strong man, He wholly and decisively defeated him. He bound the strong man, and then He was able to "plunder his house." As a result of Jesus’ surpassing victory, we can be assured of the complete and final victory in Him who loved us and gave Himself for us. Thanks be unto God!

Don’t you want to be on the winning side?

Chapter 12 of Revelation is like one of the old ‘Up Close and Personal’ segments on the sports show. We are given a historical overview of Satan as the adversary of God’s people. Again, remember that this is written in symbolic language, so it is hard to tell whether these events have any literal basis. As an example, Revelation 12:4 speaks of the ‘great red dragon’ having a tail large enough to sweep down a third of the stars of heaven upon the earth. Even a little understanding of the size and number of stars would have the story of Earth ending at that point, as it could not literally survive even one star colliding with it, let alone one-third of the stars of heaven!

So, my take is that this section gives us a brief history of the conflicts God’s people have faced. Satan’s adversarial work began in rebellion against God. He lost. He attempted to derail the plan of God throughout the history of mankind, leading up to the birth of Jesus, as seen in his persecution of ‘the woman who was about to give birth.' Israel was chosen to bring the Messiah and Savior—the ‘dragon’ with all of his power attempts to stop this from happening. Satan loses.

Recalling how God took Israel out of Egypt and into the desert, where He protected and provided for them, the woman flees into the wilderness and is protected from Satan’s onslaught.

John then writes of Satan’s ‘war in heaven’. Satan loses.

If you follow the ‘timing’ in this chapter, such a ‘war in heaven’ is not at the beginning of time, but instead appears to refer to the battle that he faced with Jesus. Whatever the take on this, again, he loses. Those with Christ conquer him not by might or power but by the word of their testimony (Revelation 12:11).

Satan then continues his ‘battle’ against the ‘woman’. This appears to be the early church and all of the resistance against it. He loses yet again. The woman is protected and given victory by the power of God, not by her own power.

Satan continues the battle against ‘the offspring’ - identified as ’those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.' Guess what - He loses. God’s people overcome their enemy by their faithfulness to Jesus.

I hope you can back up, grasp the storyline without becoming entrapped with literalism, and see that Satan loses. Each and every time, he loses. No matter what he does, he loses. In the end, he loses and will be cast into hell, which was prepared for him and his angels (cp. Matthew 25:41).

We should not be surprised to experience pushback for our faith in Jesus. We are not to be intimidated by Satan and his war against us. We are to be faithful to Jesus. We are either on the side of Jesus, the victor, or Satan, the loser. Which will it be? Where are you standing? What side are you helping?

How much do we know about Satan? Second Corinthians has quite a bit to say about him. What does Paul say in this letter about our enemy, the devil?

Knowing how Satan works is essential.

“... so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs” (II Corinthians 2:11). Just as an army is vulnerable if it doesn’t learn the enemy’s tactics, we too must know Satan’s strategies if we are to defeat him.

Satan tries to keep people from believing.

“... he god of this world [Satan] has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ...” (II Corinthians 4:4; see Luke 8:12). How Satan hates the gospel! He knows it is for our salvation. He succeeds whenever he keeps people where he wants them—in the dark, unbelieving, and lost.

Satan is subtle.

"But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ” (II Corinthians 11:3). Satan led Eve to think it was to her advantage to eat the forbidden fruit. Satan tries to fool us in the same way—if we let him.

Satan is a master of disguises.

“... even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness ...” (II Corinthians 11:14-15). Satan uses certain religious leaders to promote his lies. They may pose as spokesmen for God but are working for the devil himself. Millions are tragically deceived!

These passages not only alert us to the dangers but can motivate us to learn more about the one who wants us to be with him forever in hell. Equipped with this knowledge and with the help of our God, we can defeat him!

"Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out" (John 12:31).

When Jesus died for our sins, it cast out Satan’s power to keep us accused of sin and thereby condemned with him. His accusations don’t stand where remission of sins has been given. (Revelation 12:11f). So, God rendered a judgment at the cross. It thereby cast out Satan and his power of holding the death sentence accusation.

By rising from the dead, Jesus showed His power over death of any kind, physical or spiritual. Satan does not hold that same power. Satan is cast out by Jesus, showing who is really in charge of death. Satan was the bully on the block, but Jesus sent him running!

The world was given a new judgment:

Keep losing with Satan needlessly, or

Choose to win with Jesus.

You don’t need to allow the evil bully to keep you under his influence and power. Jesus took care of the bully, and now if you hang around Jesus, the bully will leave you alone. Jesus stood up for me, and now I will stand up with Him.

Which side are you on? The winning side or the losing side?

by Orlando Gonzalez

Out of all the characters in the Scriptures that have done foolish things, there is none, in my humble opinion, that has outdone what Satan did.

Ironically enough, he started his life off splendidly! You may be right to say that he had much more than anything he would’ve ever needed in his life. Satan used to be one of, if not the greatest, angel God had ever created in all of existence, and yet, he suffered a downfall that could’ve been completely avoided if it were not for himself becoming his own worst enemy.

Thankfully, God was willing to give us a brief glimpse into the origin of the enemy of mankind, the Great Adversary. In the book of Ezekiel 28:12-17, we read this:

“Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,

“You had the seal of perfection,
Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
You were in Eden, the garden of God;
Every precious stone was your covering:
The ruby, the topaz, and the diamond;
The beryl, the onyx, and the jasper;
The lapis lazuli, the turquoise, and the emerald;
And the gold, the workmanship of your settings and sockets,
Was in you.
On the day that you were created
They were prepared.
You were the anointed cherub who covers,
And I placed you there.
You were on the holy mountain of God;
You walked in the midst of the stones of fire.
You were blameless in your ways
From the day you were created
Until unrighteousness was found in you.
By the abundance of your trade
[f]You were internally filled with violence,
And you sinned;
Therefore I have cast you as profane
From the mountain of God.
And I have destroyed you, O covering cherub,
From the midst of the stones of fire.
Your heart was lofty because of your beauty;
You corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
I put you before kings,
That they may see you” (LSB).

Granted, this passage is a message that God wanted the prophet Ezekiel to convey to the king of Tyre about his rebellious nature and impending doom; however, the description of the king bears a resemblance to that of a fallen angel. Fortunately, we do not need to delve deeply into the text to determine if this is indeed a symbolic overview covering the downfall of the Great Adversary or not, for God mentions not only the Garden of Eden (Ezekiel 28:13) but also the position of a cherub (Ezekiel 28:14). A cherub, mind you, is a highly-renowned position for an angel.

Unfortunately, despite being highly esteemed even by God Himself, Satan wanted more. He wasn’t satisfied with staying as the most powerful, beautiful, and dignified angel out of all of his brethren. One day, he decided, in whatever extreme and ridiculous reasoning he managed to convince himself into following, that it would be a good idea to become like God (his Creator) and the only way to make that possible would be to remove Him from His position; A complete mutiny; a rebellion. A treacherous act. Worthy enough of the deepest pits in Hell.

I do wonder if Satan had any second thoughts or remorse when he was nearing the time when he would carry out this plan. All the thinking, all the planning, all the conversing with other angels to get him to join him and paint the Being that was the source of all that is good as the villain. However, it all played out, we know what caused his rebellion.

In Isaiah 14:12-15, we see that pride was what ran through the spiritual veins of this once highly renowned figure of beauty. It caused Satan to foolishly think that he could do a better job than the Creator at running reality as we know it. So, unsurprisingly, God didn’t take it too kindly. Isaiah 14:12 mentions how badly Satan lost his power, Isaiah 14:15 states his destiny, and Luke 10:18 describes how Satan fell.

“And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning” (LSB).

It’s humorous (and saddening) how Earth can be seen as a “What-If” scenario if Satan did manage to rule over Heaven. It’s astounding how he thinks he’s better than the Holy Trinity if he can’t even rightly run a single spec of dust in the universe!

Now, you would think that Satan would have learned his lesson and would try his absolute hardest to seek God’s forgiveness and mercy. Well, no, you’d be wrong. Instead, Satan held on to his pride with an ungodly grip. So much so that he thought he still had a chance at overthrowing God after Jesus died and saved humanity! But unsurprisingly, that attempt didn’t work (Revelation 12:7-9). Now, in the modern day, Satan is on a dog leash, being used as a tool to carry out God’s will until He is thrown into Hell, according to Revelation 20:1-3:

“Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he threw him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were finished. After these things he must be released for a short time” (LSB).

What should we take away from this, then? The clearest message from this character of the Bible is that pride should be avoided at all costs! It is so dangerous that if someone like Satan were to allow himself to become who he is today thanks to becoming discontent with his former position in Heaven, then we Christians should never believe that we can never become prideful, even with all the experience, knowledge, and wisdom that we have obtained over the years! Yes, we can, and always will, have the choice not to become prideful, but there will always be moments of temptation, big or small. Subtle, or obvious. The devil knows how human minds work, and if we aren’t careful enough, we will start to think that we’re right with full sincerity and conviction, when in reality we have compromised our salvation, ruined our relationship with God, and have caused significant damage to our reputation and effectiveness in the kingdom. Focusing on yourself and what you want never ends well (Proverbs 16:18). Just like how God condemned Satan for becoming prideful over his state in life, God will also condemn us (I Timothy 3:6). We must deeply reflect on our thoughts, our hearts, and our actions and use the Word of God as the judge of whether we’re right in His sight or not.

Let us always remember to strive to avoid becoming conceited. Here are the last two passages that I want to share with you for your consideration. Heed them, and the grace and love of God will strengthen and guide you all the days of your life.

“You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time…” (I Peter 5:5-6 LSB).

“But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:6-7 LSB).

A few days ago, someone asked me if I knew where the devil came from. I told her the easy answer is “From heaven,” but he is no longer there because of his disobedience. Of course, it is that simple, yet at the same time, it is much more complicated. The question of where the devil comes from is deeply rooted in Christian theology. From this perspective, the devil, also known as Satan, is understood to be a fallen angel who was once a perfect creation of God but rebelled due to his pride and was cast out of heaven.

The Bible does not provide a detailed account of Satan's origin, and my friend also questioned why that is. I have heard more than one answer, but the one I prefer is as follows: The Bible is about God, His love, grace, and mercy, and about Jesus Christ, who atoned for our sinful natures. That is its focus. It was not written to introduce the devil; it was written to introduce God and His perfect Son.

However, several passages are traditionally interpreted as describing his fall. For instance, Isaiah 14:12-15 speaks of the "morning star" falling from heaven, often seen as a reference to Satan: "How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low!" (Isaiah 14:12). While this passage addresses the king of Babylon, many believe it also symbolizes Satan's pride and rebellion.

Similarly, Ezekiel 28:12-19, directed at the king of Tyre, describes a being in Eden, perfect in beauty, who became proud and was cast out: "You were the signet of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.... Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. I cast you to the ground" (Ezekiel 28:12-19). This is often interpreted as a dual reference, applying to both a human king and Satan.

In the New Testament, Revelation 12:7-9 describes a war in heaven where Satan, called the "great dragon," was cast out: "Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him " (Revelation 12:7-9).

Jesus also mentioned seeing Satan fall in Luke 10:18: "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven," suggesting this event was in the past. These passages suggest that Satan was originally an angel, possibly a cherub, created to serve God. However, due to pride - wanting to be like God - he rebelled and was cast out, along with other angels who followed him. This fall is believed to have occurred before the creation of humanity, as Satan appears in Genesis tempting Eve. The apostle Paul, in I Timothy 3:6, warns against pride, noting it led to the "condemnation of the devil," reinforcing that pride was the cause.

Today, Satan is viewed as the adversary, tempter, and accuser, seeking to lead humanity astray and oppose God's plans. His influence is limited, and his ultimate defeat is assured, as described in Revelation 20:10: “…and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” The devil's origin lies in his rebellion against God due to pride, which resulted in his fall from heaven, as understood from key biblical passages and theological reflection.

I believe the most important thing to remember is that the origin of Satan is not more important than His purpose. Just as there is nothing evil in God, there is also nothing good in Satan: “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

God is the epitome of grace, mercy, love, and forgiveness, while the devil represents the very antithesis of those qualities. Whereas God cannot lie (Titus 1:1), Satan is nothing but a liar (John 8:44). I cannot speak for anyone else, but the origin of Satan does not concern me. The only thing about him that concerns me is ensuring I do not follow him, so I don’t end up in the lake of fire and sulfur.

Question:

Should we hate Satan?

To me, it sure seems like we should hate the devil because he is the embodiment of sin (I John 3:8). Satan is lost; he’s never coming over to God’s side. It just conflicts with our desire to love our enemies as we’re told to do.

Answer:

"The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate" (Proverbs 8:13).

When actions or people stand opposed to God, then we are to oppose them. "Do I not hate them, O LORD, who hate You? And do I not loathe those who rise up against You? I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them my enemies" (Psalms 139:21-22). Notice that this is not personal.

When someone opposes me, I show love to them. I treat them better than they deserve and better than they treat me. "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous" (Matthew 5:44-45).

However, when someone gives themselves over to evil, I may feel sorry for them, but I will not show support for their deeds. I hate what they represent. If they change, then my attitude toward them will also change.

However, with Satan, God is clear that Satan will not change his ways, so he remains the enemy of God and mankind. I must oppose him. "Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you" (James 4:7). In my opposition, however, I must be careful not to put myself in the position of God. I cannot pronounce judgment on him since that is God's decision, not mine. "But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, 'The Lord rebuke you!'" (Jude 9).

Introduction

The Devil is real and out to get us (I Peter 5:8).

His will not be a frontal assault; he will get us with his tools and his devices
of deception. He does have devices (cf. II Corinthians 2:11).

It will do us well to consider some of his devices and be familiar with them.

Body

He labels evil things with pleasant names!

His agents are crafty through speech (Colossians 2:4, 8).

His agents in society will not call evil anything but good (cf. Isaiah 5:18-28).

Fornication is called "free love" (cf. I Corinthians 6:18).

Rebellion is not witchcraft but "independent thinking" (cf. I Samuel 15:28).

Drinking is not for fools but for men of distinction (Proverbs 31:4-7).

Wise men consider the consequences of each of the above!

He attacks us through our passions!

One passion he can really use is anger, giving place to the devil (Ephesians 4:26-27).

Consider the meek man Moses, who was so reluctant to become the agent of God that he lost his temper more than once (Exodus 32:19; Numbers 20:12).

Cain killed his brother for it (Genesis 4:5).

Naaman would have continued in his leprosy for it (II Kings 5:11-12).

I am never a more fitting servant of Satan than when I am angry!

He will use the passions of the flesh (I John 2:15-17).

People will lie, steal, prostitute themselves, etc., for lust.

He will tempt us with our greatest desires. Christ, for instance, had a consuming passion for the world's kingdoms, to bring them into submission to God. Satan offered him these if He would bow down to the Devil.

Even when we want good things, he will use them to bring us down. For instance, the preacher who wants to serve God ably may be brought down with the pride of becoming a "brotherhood figure."

He can even use our noble passions against us. Peter, for instance, was ready to die for Christ, but Satan made him a coward to deny Him (Matthew 27).

He will fake defeat to get us off guard!

Many a battle has been lost because the enemy was thought to be overcome when he
was not, in fact, overcome at all. The first battle of Bull Run was considered
the end of the Civil War, as was the second. The enemy was still just preparing.

Satan may lose us to Christ, but the race isn't over till it's over (cf. Hebrews 12:1).

We should not be weary in well-doing. We'll reap if we faint not (Galatians 6:9; I Corinthians 15:58).

Finally, for this lesson, he emphasizes "tomorrow."

Satan always wants us to consider delayed decisions.

Today seems so insignificant with its reality; tomorrow always seems so glamorous and appealing with its potential. Thus, Satan wants us to look to tomorrow.

God speaks only of today for us (James 4:13-14).

Today is the day of salvation (II Corinthians 6:2).

Conclusion

To be sure, there are other "devices" that Satan uses, but these he uses so often and so effectively.

Let us not be ignorant of his devices.
