Answer:

Prostitution is condemned in Leviticus 19:29; Jeremiah 3:2; 13:27; Hosea 2:5; 4:13-15; and Nahum 3:3-4. These passages condemn both the women who were prostitutes and the men who sought out their services.

Fornication between unmarried couples carried a penalty, requiring a dowry of 50 shekels of silver. A silver shekel was worth what an unskilled laborer could earn in 40 days of work. The price of dowry needed would be roughly what an unskilled laborer could earn in seven years (assuming he had to live on some of his earnings). In addition, he was required to marry the woman with whom he had sex with no allowance for a future divorce unless her father objected to the marriage (Deuteronomy 22:28-29; Exodus 22:16-17). This sin would also require a guilt offering to be made.

Even prior to the Law of Moses, people knew fornication was wrong. After Shechem had sex with Dinah, her brothers were upset. "Now the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter, for such a thing ought not to be done" (Genesis 34:7).

Israel was to put tassels on the corners of their garments as a reminder. "It shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the LORD, so as to do them and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you played the harlot, so that you may remember to do all My commandments and be holy to your God" (Numbers 15:39-40). It didn't serve them well because not long after, "While Israel remained at Shittim, the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab" (Numbers 25:1). Along with worshiping Baal (a male fertility god), Israel caused God to be furious with them. "Then behold, one of the sons of Israel came and brought to his relatives a Midianite woman, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, while they were weeping at the doorway of the tent of meeting. When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he arose from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand, and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and pierced both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman, through the body. So the plague on the sons of Israel was checked" (Numbers 25:6-8). If you think for a moment, Phinehas speared the man and the woman while they were lying down together to have sex.

Good evening,

I write to you because I am tired of sinning sexually. When I think I have overcome it, I fall again, and I sin with prostitutes when I know that I am a minister. I have a relationship with the Lord, yet I continue to sin and look for someone to sin with, and I have done it many times. I have asked God to have a heart after His, yet I keep falling and just did it again recently.

I feel terrible. I want to stop falling into sin. I want God to forgive me, not to lose my girlfriend or my ministry; that's why I'm afraid to tell my pastor and her. Is there any way God can forgive me and throw that sin to the bottom of the sea?

Answer:

"Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry; but when he is found, he must repay sevenfold; he must give all the substance of his house. The one who commits adultery with a woman is lacking sense; he who would destroy himself does it" (Proverbs 6:30-32).

I know you are looking for sympathy and that you see yourself as a victim, but the truth of the matter is that no man has to have sex. No matter how you look at the matter, you have no excuse.

You did not mention why you seek out sin and want it so badly that you'll pay someone to have sex with you. However, I notice that you seem to expect God to stop you from sinning. You want God to remove the sin, but the Bible tells the sinner to repent (change). God doesn't take away your free will. What you are doing has been by your choice. You are the one looking for sex, paying prostitutes, and committing fornication. You are fully responsible for your actions. Therefore, it is your choice to stop. "I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us. For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death. For behold what earnestness this very thing, this godly sorrow, has produced in you: what vindication of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what avenging of wrong! In everything you demonstrated yourselves to be innocent in the matter" (II Corinthians 7:9-11). Until you take responsibility for your actions and yield your choices to be as God directs, you'll keep stumbling.

"Then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who indulge the flesh in its corrupt desires and despise authority. Daring, self-willed, they do not tremble when they revile angelic Majesties, whereas angels who are greater in might and power do not bring a reviling judgment against them before the Lord. But these, like unreasoning animals, born as creatures of instinct to be captured and killed, reviling where they have no knowledge, will in the destruction of those creatures also be destroyed, suffering wrong as the wages of doing wrong. They count it a pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are stains and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, as they carouse with you, having eyes full of adultery that never cease from sin, enticing unstable souls, having a heart trained in greed, accursed children; forsaking the right way, they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness" (II Peter 2:9-15).

Question:

Hello,

I’ve been in a relationship with my girlfriend for three years now. When we met, she hadn’t been with anyone before, while I had multiple past relationships. Over time, I pressured her into being intimate before marriage—something she agreed to, perhaps out of love or other reasons.

Recently, I was unfaithful to her and had an encounter with an escort. Although I had been open about my past before we began dating, she still chose to be with me and remains willing to give me another chance. Now, I’m struggling with intense guilt, which leads me to several questions:

With these feelings of guilt, should I tell her what recently happened? The truth is, I haven’t fundamentally changed.

I realize I lack a deep respect for God, His creation, and the moral and ethical principles that should guide my life. How can I begin to shift away from the selfish and fleeting hedonism that I often pursue?

I feel the need to dismantle parts of myself that are holding me back from being closer to Jesus and God and from building a healthier relationship. What are some actionable steps I could take to achieve this?

Thank you for any guidance.

Answer:

I keep wondering why people think that dating is equivalent to marriage. You have been ignoring God's commands -- perhaps justifying yourself by telling yourself it is a "committed" relationship, but you have yet to remain committed in any of your past relationships. When Paul said, "Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God" (I Corinthians 6:9-10), there are no exceptions for people who are playing at marriage.

Of course, you should be feeling guilty. Christ gave his life to free you from sin, and you have been trampling over him in your rush to continue to sin. Where is your respect? How can you be close to the Lord when you ignore His commands? "Why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?" (Luke 6:46).

"For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries. Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay." And again, "the Lord will judge His people." It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God" (Hebrews 10:26-31).

Saying you had an "encounter with an escort" makes it sound unintentional. A more accurate statement is that you went out of your way to pay a prostitute to have sex with you. This is not proper behavior for a Christian.

God wants you to be set apart as someone dedicated to His service. "For this is the will of God, your sanctification" (I Thessalonians 4:3). "Sanctification" is to be set apart for a holy purpose. You can't be holy with your clothes off having sex with a prostitute or girlfriends. "that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality" (I Thessalonians 4:3). How do you stay out of fornication? "That each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor" (I Thessalonians 4:4). Your vessel is your body. It is the container for your soul. You have to control your body. It should not be controlling your decisions. Your decisions should control your actions, and you should treat yourself as something holy and honorable because Christ purchased you with His own blood. How do you lose control of your body? "Not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God" (I Thessalonians 4:5). "Lustful" and "passion" translate two Greek synonyms for lust. It refers to passionate things designed to stimulate lust in you. You can't expect to control yourself when you put yourself in situations where someone is encouraging you to think about sex. You can't control your sexual urges while watching pornography and thinking about how to get women to let you have sex with them. "But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:28).

The truth that God desires you to be sanctified is so important you cannot allow anyone to deceive you into thinking differently. "And that no man transgress and defraud his brother in the matter because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you before and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification. So, he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit to you" (I Thessalonians 4:6-8).

Thus, you must make decisions based on what God says is right or wrong and not based on your impulses or feelings. It isn't about what you want but what God commands. This means giving up the pornography. It means marrying your girlfriend and stopping the sex with her until you're married. It means you must treat her respectfully and not as a toy to satisfy your cravings. It means you can't be touching her sexually or talking dirty to her. It won't be easy, but it is doable, and your life will be much better in the long run.

Question:

Dear sir,

I have visited prostitutes in the past. I repent each day to our Lord for my fallacies. I never plan or think about paying for sex again in my life nor of falling back into the pornography trap.

I seem to be stuck in a cycle of shame and guilt. I am speaking to a qualified therapist for the same.

Recently I met a righteous Christian girl who matches my criteria of a good life partner. I fell in love with her and she too loves me but my life seems to have turned upside down. Not a single day goes by when I don't think about what I did in my past. Some days I want to confess to her about my sexual sins, but I get cold feet because I'm scared of losing her.

I am in a very delicate situation in my life. I pray to God every day and ask for forgiveness but things are getting worse for me. I cry out to God each day in my prayers, and I am crying very easily these days.

What should be my course of action from here?

I look forward to your guidance.

Many thanks.

Answer:

You can't live in your past. Yes, it is appropriate to be embarrassed about your past sins. It is normal to feel guilty that you were foolish enough to have committed them. However, you can't change the past. Consider how Paul handled his past:

"I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service, even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus. It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all. Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life" (I Timothy 1:12-16).

Paul focused on the fact that he knew God had forgiven him of his sins. That is a part of belief. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (I John 1:9). By hanging on to your guilt, you are basically saying that you don't trust in God's forgiveness. Instead of constantly asking God for forgiveness, start praising God for His forgiveness.

Paul also realized that his past became an example to others that sin can be overcome. He was thankful that God allowed him to live long enough that he was able to change before it was too late.

Everyone has a past. Your girlfriend has one as well. If she can't accept that you became the man you are by overcoming sin, then she isn't good enough for you. She doesn't need to know the details, but you should tell her that you have a past that you are not proud of but she should know it had happened. Tell her that you aren't a virgin and that at one time you had paid for sex. Then emphasize that you've left all that behind for Christ. She doesn't need to know how many times or with whom. You might mention how long ago it happened so she knows you have really changed.

The reason for telling her is not because she needs to forgive you. That is between you and God. But she does need to understand you and decide if you are the type of man she wants to marry. She needs to know both your good qualities and your bad ones. It would be unfair to her to find out about these things after she had already committed to you. She should love you despite your flaws.

"The Bible does not hide from or obscure the power of the temptation to illicit sex. In language that is refreshingly clear and direct without itself indulging in titillation, the text warns the reader of the debacle that awaits him should he succumb in this area and at the same time promises profound sexual joy to those whose hearts are chaste and loving. If the church is to do its duty, it must be no less clear in its teachings. To assume that nice, Christian young people do not struggle in these areas or to speak only in whispers and innuendo on the grounds that they are inappropriate for the Christian pulpit is no less than gross neglect of duty on the church’s part. Whether one is dealing with the ritual prostitution of a fertility cult, the ordinary prostitute on the street (or in a magazine), or the simple lure of extramarital sex, the temptations and dangers are the same." [Duane A. Garrett, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs: The New American Commentary, vol. 14 (Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers, 1993), 90.]

"My son, give attention to my wisdom, Incline your ear to my understanding; that you may observe discretion and your lips may reserve knowledge. For the lips of an adulteress drip honey and smoother than oil is her speech; but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death, her steps take hold of Sheol. She does not ponder the path of life; her ways are unstable, she does not know it.

"Now then, my sons, listen to me and do not depart from the words of my mouth. Keep your way far from her and do not go near the door of her house, or you will give your vigor to others and your years to the cruel one; and strangers will be filled with your strength and your hard-earned goods will go to the house of an alien; and you groan at your final end, when your flesh and your body are consumed; and you say, 'How I have hated instruction! And my heart spurned reproof! I have not listened to the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to my instructors! I was almost in utter ruin In the midst of the assembly and congregation'" (Proverbs 5:1-14).

Answer:

People claim to have an addiction to give the impression that they have little choice. No one starts life as an addict, whether we are talking about drugs or sexual behavior. People choose to experiment with sin. Perhaps, at first, they know what they are doing is wrong but they continue until it becomes a regular habit. They become tolerant of the problems that accompany the sin and in some fashion become dependent on how the sin makes them feel. That feeling becomes more important to them than living righteously.

No one makes you see prostitutes. You have to choose to seek them out, pay them money, and then engage in sex. Thus, you have to realize that the only reason you are doing it is because of your own desires. "But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust" (James 1:14). Therefore, until you value living for Christ above your own desires and wants, you will constantly find yourself compromising with sin, which is really no compromise because sin always wins when you allow it.

Repentance is when you change your mind and your behavior in regard to sin. Being sorry that you have sinned is not repentance. Sorrow over what you have done may drive you to do something about the situation, but the sorrow alone is not a true change. You have to see that having sex with someone you are not married to is wrong, regardless of the circumstances or your personal feelings about the matter. You have to change -- inside and out. "For behold what earnestness this very thing, this godly sorrow, has produced in you: what vindication of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what avenging of wrong! In everything you demonstrated yourselves to be innocent in the matter" (II Corinthians 7:11).

Getting rid of sin out of your life is not enough by itself. The reasons you sinned in the past are still there and eventually, the sin will come back stronger than before (Matthew 12:3-45). Sinful behavior has to be replaced with righteousness. "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me" (Galatians 2:20).

A person dies with Christ through baptism. "What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life" (Romans 6:1-4).

When you are ready to trust Christ with your life, let me know and we'll find a preacher near you to teach you the words of life. "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ" (Romans 10:17).

Answer:

I wonder, at times, just what is being taught in so-called Christian religions these days.

"Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? May it never be!" (I Corinthians 6:15).

I assume that you have chosen to live in the group home because you can afford it and not because you don't have other options, though they might be less desirable. It doesn't mean you can't choose to date a woman and get married. True, you can't bring a woman into your group home, but that is only proper because an unmarried woman should not be with an unmarried man in his room.

The fundamental flaw is the belief that all people have the right to experience sex at least once. That is not what God said. Sex is a right of married couples but it is forbidden to single people. "Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge" (Hebrews 13:4).

Decisions are not to be made based on your desires because that is how Satan tricks us into sinning (James 1:13-16). Decisions cannot be made based on what other people say because many people are not following God. It is far too easy to follow other people into hell. The only way to make good moral choices is to obey what God has said.

"By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, "I have come to know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked" (I John 2:3-6).

Suppose someone came up to you and said, "I have this habit of stealing. Can you provide me a solution?" I suspect you would say, "Stop stealing and get a job." "He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need" (Ephesians 4:28).

"Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry; but when he is found, he must repay sevenfold; he must give all the substance of his house. The one who commits adultery with a woman is lacking sense; he who would destroy himself does it. Wounds and disgrace he will find, and his reproach will not be blotted out" (Proverbs 6:32-33).

There are zero reasons why you need to have sex with prostitutes or to lust after women you are not married to. A guy can survive without sex. No one makes you do these things, they are personal choices. For that reason, no one can make you behave. You have to practice self-control. You can stop, but you have to want it badly enough to be willing to put in the effort to resist temptation. "Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded" (James 4:7-8).

I would be happy to pray and ask Jesus to forgive you of your sins after you give up your adultery, but since you are continuing in them, such prayers would be useless.

Asking God to stop you from sinning is also useless because that implies that God is controlling your choice to sin. God gave you free will. You are using it to ignore God. It is you who has to give up adultery and then you can come to God and apologize for your sinful choices.

No one ever made you spend your money on prostitutes to have sex. That was your foolish choice and yours alone. Since there is nothing making you do it, and it is harmful to you, there can be no sympathy for your bad decision.

Even though I believe very strongly in God I have never felt that He has been in my life. I hate my existence on this planet. I go to bed every night praying for death. I wake up every morning angry that I am still alive. I have had the thought that I am going to hell for the crime against God of being conceived. My existence is a crime against God.

Am I going to hell for seeing the escort?

Thank you.

Answer:

Too often people focus on avoiding one sin and never consider all the sins that lead up to it. In a sense, that is what was behind Jesus' teaching. "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery'; but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:27-28). The Jews had taken the commandment to not commit adultery and told each other that as long as they were not having sex with a married person that they were acceptable in God's eyes. Even today there are Jewish scholars who argue that sex between unmarried people is not wrong because it isn't adultery. But it shows a complete misunderstanding of sin.

"Do not enter the path of the wicked and do not proceed in the way of evil men. Avoid it, do not pass by it; turn away from it and pass on" (Proverbs 4:13-14).

Why is it so important not only to not start down the path of the wicked but to avoid it completely? Paths lead to a particular destination. If you don't want to reach Chicago, you don't start walking the path that heads there.

Jesus' point is that adultery did not start with the physical joining of a man and woman. It started long before. When a person starts lusting for a sin -- strongly desiring to sin to the point that they make up excuses as to why that sin won't be too bad -- they already have committed a sin. True, it isn't the actual act of adultery, but it is still a sin and it is just as bad.

Fornication doesn't start when a man goes into a woman. Sins leading up to fornication started long before. Given the prevalence of pornography these days, I would guess that you have been involved in sexual lust and pornography for quite a while, but these are sins (Mark 7:21-23; I Thessalonians 4:3-5). This led you to hire a prostitute, but that sounds too crash, so you called her an escort; yet, prostitution is also a sin. You inappropriately touched her and allowed her to touch you sexually (I Corinthians 7:1). You behaved in lewd ways (acting like animals) (Romans 13:13-14). You participated in oral sex, which is really a form of fornication.

I'm not trying to be hard on you. I'm trying to be clear with you about how deeply you got yourself into sin -- all while trying to avoid sexual intercourse. Understanding what happened then also clarifies what needs to be done to get out of these sins and repent (II Corinthians 7:10-11; I John 1:9).

You can't just go part way. You need to extract yourself completely. Erase all the contact information for this woman. Block her number if necessary. Stop looking at pornography and if needed install Internet filtering software to help keep you from accidentally going to porn sites.

"For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome" (I John 5:3).

Christianity is not a religion of feelings. It is a religion of knowledge. When you know you are doing all that God commanded, then you know you are close to God.

Feelings change. They come and go. They are totally unreliable (Proverbs 28:26). Truth is fixed. It isn't that Christianity doesn't have emotions, but rather the emotions we experience follow our decisions. Emotions are not the cause of our decisions.

You hired a prostitute because you followed your emotions. If you had stopped and asked yourself, "What would God want me to do?", you would have not called the prostitute.

You have been asking for God's help and that help is right there in your Bible. Have you spent time reading it and studying it? It is by reading the Bible that we listen to God.

Life here is a journey to a better place. None of us ask to be here, but there is no reason you can't enjoy the time you have while you are here. I'm sorry about the depression you experience. Your existence is not a crime, it was a blessing to your parents (Psalms 127:3). God made you and God wants you, so try to find it in your heart not to grumble against your Maker.
