Sentry Magazine, June 2002

Paul wrote to the church at Rome in Romans 15:4 that "whatever things were written before were written for our learning." In a simple statement like this, the persecutor-turned-apostle explained the reason for the Old Testament. In light of a statement like this, it is prudent to examine some of those things written before and the lessons we can learn from them.

Praise God

God should not be a mere option to whom we turn in times of trouble. Instead, he is a God worthy of our praise. Throughout the Old Testament's longest book, God is the focus of continuous praise. David writes that God's "praise shall continually be in my mouth" (Psalm 34:2). The Psalmist later writes that he will praise God among the multitude (Psalm 109:30). Let us all strive to praise God with our words and actions among the multitudes we encounter.

Trust God

When Abram was told by God to "Get out of your country" and, given no explanation as to why, Abram trusted the Lord and "departed as the Lord had spoken to him" (Genesis 12:1,4). Abram's trust in God is indeed evident through this and the many actions he took in his life of service to God. We should all strive to have that simple trust and faith that is so crucial to our pleasing God (Hebrews 11:6).

Obey God

God demands obedience to his commands. Uzzah reminds us of this important lesson. Uzzah, with good intentions in mind, "put forth his hand to that ark of God" when he saw it falling (II Samuel 6:6). Of course, had the men of Israel not disobeyed God by putting the ark on the cart in verse three of the same chapter, Uzzah would not have had to worry about this nor would God have taken his life. Obedience to God is critical and it is a lesson of which we must all remind ourselves. One of the best ways to do this is to open God's book to the pages of the Old Testament.

Answer:

Praise

"And she conceived again and bore a son and said, "This time I will praise the LORD." Therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing" (Genesis 29:35).

"Judah, your brothers shall praise you; Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; Your father's sons shall bow down to you" (Genesis 49:8).

The word for "praise" in the Hebrew language is yadah. When Judah was born, his mother did a play on words by calling her son Judah, which is similar to the word for praise. Later Jacob said that Judah's brothers would praise him and bow down to him. It expresses the idea that they will confess or acknowledge something about or to someone. The same idea is used in regard to sin -- to confess one's sins to God. "If they confess (yada) their iniquity and the iniquity of their forefathers, in their unfaithfulness which they committed against Me, and also in their acting with hostility against Me" (Leviticus 26:40). Yadah is also used of thanking God (II Samuel 22:50), which still emphasizes letting something be known (confessing).

There is another word for praise in Hebrew. It is halal, which has a couple of meanings, but we will focus on just a few. It means "to boast, exult, to praise;" thus, something about God is praised. "Praise (hala) Him, highest heavens, And the waters that are above the heavens! Let them praise (hala) the name of the LORD, For He commanded, and they were created" (Psalms 148:4-5). God is being praised for what He created and has done. If you read the whole psalm, it talks heavily about God's glory and why we should praise His name. Halal is also used to mean to sing and to use instruments at times in praise to God (I Chronicles 23:5). Not all uses of halal are toward God. Absalom was praised for having a "perfect" body without defects (II Samuel 14:25).

We are given an example of both words being used in the same statement. "He appointed some of the Levites as ministers before the ark of the LORD, even to celebrate and to thank (yadah) and praise (hala) the LORD God of Israel" (I Chronicles 16:4).

There are other words in Hebrew for praise, which mean thankfulness or a thank offering. Overall, the idea of praise is to let something be known, to acknowledge, extol, boast, praise, and give thanks for someone. In regards to God it is a praise of His character, attributes, works He has done, etc. The Greek words for praise use a similar meaning.

Worship

The word "worship" comes from the Hebrew word shachah, which means to bow down before or to someone or something, such as idols, to prostrate yourself willingly or unwillingly. The Bible translators try to indicate the difference between a literal bowing down and worship. "He said, "Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you."… Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you"" (Genesis 22:2,5). Abraham went to Moriah to worship God; yet, if you read the story he never bows down. The act of worship is the sacrifice he was to do. The non-worship use of the word is when someone bows down to show respect. In this sense, he humbles himself. "So Abraham rose and bowed to the people of the land, the sons of Heth" (Genesis 23:7).

We can see the same word holding both meanings in one statement. "In this matter may the LORD pardon your servant: when my master goes into the house of Rimmon to worship (shachah) there, and he leans on my hand and I bow (shachah) myself in the house of Rimmon, when I bow (shachah) myself in the house of Rimmon, the LORD pardon your servant in this matter" (II Kings 5:18).

In the New Testament "worship" has a similar overall meaning: to bow down, worship, pay homage (welcome someone with respect), reverence, to humble.

Summary

Praise: letting something be known, to acknowledge, extol, boast, praise, and give thanks to or for God regarding His character, attributes, or works He has done or will do.

Worship: to fall down, prostrate, humble, or do an act of worship or all at the same time.

When we say "let's praise the Lord," it is an act of worshiping God. However, there are other acts that are also a part of worshiping God. Praise is just one way to worship God.

Even though I can give praise to someone for a good deed he has done, I am not worshiping him as I would God. Men can be praised, but they are not to be worshiped.

I can bow in humility before a king, but I am not worshiping him as a god. You could offer up a sacrifice to God as an act of worship under the Old Testament, but you were not to sacrifice to other gods.

You can see this when Jesus was tempted by Satan. "Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; and he said to Him, "All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me." Then Jesus said to him, "Go, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve him only'" (Matthews 4:8-10). The difference is also seen between John and an angel. "I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed me these things. But he said to me, "Do not do that. I am a fellow servant of yours and of your brethren the prophets and of those who heed the words of this book. Worship God" (Revelation 22:8-9).

In the Old Testament, one common word that is translated as "praise" is tehillah, which literally means "to cause to shine." Thus, praise is giving glory to God. "He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; many will see and fear and will trust in the LORD" (Psalms 40:3).

Tehillah comes from a root word, halal, which literally means to shine, to flash forth light. It can be translated as to boast, to exult, or to praise. Psalms 113 explains it well:

"Praise the LORD!
Praise, O servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD!
Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and forevermore!
From the rising of the sun to its going down the LORD'S name is to be praised.
The LORD is high above all nations, His glory above the heavens.
Who is like the LORD our God, who dwells on high, who humbles Himself to behold the things that are in the heavens and in the earth?
He raises the poor out of the dust, and lifts the needy out of the ash heap, that He may seat him with princes - with the princes of His people.
He grants the barren woman a home, like a joyful mother of children.
Praise the LORD!" (Psalms 113:1-9).

God's reputation is caused to shine by people exulting the things that God has done.

In the New Testament, ainos, aineo, and ainesis are various forms of a word that literally means to tell a story -- in this case telling a story that exults the things God has done. "Immediately he regained his sight and began following Him, glorifying God; and when all the people saw it, they gave praise to God" (Luke 18:43).

A related word is eulogeo, which literally means to speak good of another. It is what Zacharias did after his voice was returned to him. "And at once his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God" (Luke 1:64).

Another Greek word that is sometimes translated as "praise" is megaluno, which literally means to make great by words. "This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived in Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified" (Acts 19:17).

Finally, the Greek word doxa is sometimes translated as "praise." It refers to what someone thinks of another, or their reputation. Thus, in reference to God, it is giving Him glory and honor. "For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen" (Romans 11:36).

Question:

I'm a 14-year-old guy. Most guys like to play sports, games, computers, etc. Well when I'm taking part in these activities, I'm thinking to myself, “stop idolizing this stuff, you could be reading the Bible instead." In other words, whenever I am doing something fun, it feels like I should be reading the Word instead. I want to do something when I'm an adult that would bring people to God. Like playing basketball. Have you heard of Jeremy Lin? He is playing basketball to have fun, but he is also doing it to glorify God. I just want to be able to do something and say I'm doing this for God. This is hard to do when video games are for satisfying fantasies. Well, sort of, at least for pleasure, I suppose. I feel like I'm leaving Jesus in the dust when I'm having fun. Reading the bible is just a tad bit boring. Don't get me wrong, it's very interesting, and I love it. But it's boring to read anything in general. I guess my real question is how can I glorify God in everything I do but still have fun in the process?

Any response will be great. I'll answer anything I didn't say clearly.

Thanks once again!

"Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes; but know that for all these God will bring you into judgment. Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, and put away evil from your flesh, for childhood and youth are vanity" (Ecclesiastes 11:9-10).

There is nothing wrong with having fun and enjoying yourself, so long as your choice of fun is not sinful.

What gives glory to God is when you put God's teachings into practice in your life.

"If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen" (I Peter 4:11).

"Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God" (I Corinthians 6:20).

"And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him" (Colossians 3:17).

There are a lot of people in the world who never consider the morality of different situations, so when your friends all want to do something that is wrong but you decline, then you show them that you are different and if they ask why, you can tell them that this isn't what God wants. That is giving God the glory.

Implied in that is that you know what God wants, so that does mean learning God's teachings, but it doesn't mean that is all you do. What you learn has to be applied in all aspects of life.

"Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God" (Ecclesiastes 2:24).

"I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives, and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor -- it is the gift of God" (Ecclesiastes 3:12-13).

"So I commended enjoyment, because a man has nothing better under the sun than to eat, drink, and be merry; for this will remain with him in his labor all the days of his life which God gives him under the sun" (Ecclesiastes 8:15).

"Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand" (Philippians 4:4-5).

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (I Thessalonians 5:16-18).

Don't let your desire to be righteous make yourself miserable. If you do, then you've completely missed the fact that God teaches us how to get more from life by being righteous than the wicked are able to get from their sins.

In God's worship, should everyone be in one accord, like everybody doing the same thing? I ask because I know there shouldn't be musical instruments in the church. I play the piano and people have told me that I was wrong because I didn't play in a church -- something about me not using the gift He gave me. I told them God didn't command it, we all should sing. If you blow a horn, you're not singing, are you wrong? A friend of mine also told me he uses instruments not as a commandment or worship practice but as an addition to have the music sound better. I told him it's still wrong because it's not what He asked. Well, he feels that if it's a way to praise God, then it's not wrong. So his church has a dance team, flag performances and even on some Sundays have something called crazy praise. I really don't know how to talk to him to have him understand.

"If you love Me, keep My commandments. ... He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him. ... If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me" (John 14:15, 21, 23-24).

Love for Christ is demonstrated by our willingness to do as Christ commanded us. Your friend, however, has turned this around. He claims that anything he decides praises God is something God will accept. Thus he puts his own personal preferences in the driver seat above God. As Paul noted, "For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ" (Galatians 1:10). Worship is not about pleasing ourselves. It is about man bowing to God's will and serving Him. "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man's all" (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

Your friend admitted that instrumental music was not authorized, but he wanted them as an addition in order to make the music sound better. Sound better to whom? If a bride asked for acoustic guitar music at her wedding and the musicians brought in electric guitars, keyboards, drums, etc. to play heavy metal, did they show respect for the bride? Can they claim that the extra equipment would make the music sound better? Again, sound better to whom?

God has never taken innovations by men as a matter of complimenting Him.

""Woe to the rebellious children," says the LORD, "who take counsel, but not of Me, and who devise plans, but not of My Spirit, that they may add sin to sin"" (Isaiah 30:1).

"You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you" (Deuteronomy 4:6).

"Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it" (Deuteronomy 12:32).

"Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar" (Proverbs 30:6).

"I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed" (Galatians 1:6-9).

"For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book" (Revelation 22:18-19).

Whether your friend cares is a demonstration of his heart.

Answer:

The word "worship" means to honor and give respect to a divine being or supernatural power. God claims worship as His exclusive right. "For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.' " (Matthew 4:10). And yet through the ages, men have worshipped many other things.

Worship is not something that is accidentally done. It requires conscious action on the part of the worshipper. "Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth"" (John 4:21-24). Worship requires a worshipper. In other words, worship is an action taken by people. The existence of a rock or a tree is not worship, nor can animals offer up worship. Worship also requires an object of worship, this is God. The worship must be done in proper spirit and it must be done in truth (as God commands).

The word "worship" is translated from the Hebrew word shachah and the Greek word proskuneo. Both words refer to a person willingly bowing himself to the ground before someone greater. The bowing represents the powerlessness of the person before the greater power. When Peter realized he was in the presence of the mighty God, he was struck with his own worthlessness. "Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, "Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." But Simon answered and said to Him, "Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net." And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!" For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken" (Luke 5:3-9). This is no different from Job's reaction to God's questions of his knowledge. "Then Job answered the LORD and said: "I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You. You asked, 'Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?' Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. Listen, please, and let me speak; You said, 'I will question you, and you shall answer Me.' I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You. Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes." " (Job 42:1-6).

When Paul looked back at the kindness of God in allowing him, of all people, to be His minister to the Gentiles, Paul bowed before God, asking that others comprehend what he had learned. "For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for you Gentiles-- if indeed you have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which was given to me for you, how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets: that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ through the gospel, of which I became a minister according to the gift of the grace of God given to me by the effective working of His power. To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ; to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him. Therefore I ask that you do not lose heart at my tribulations for you, which is your glory. For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height-- to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen." (Ephesians 3:1-21).

Such should be the response of everyone whom God saves from their own wickedness. "You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created" (Revelation 4:11). "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!" (Revelation 5:12). Hence, true worship is our reaction to being in the presence of the Almighty.
