The word "worship" means to honor and give respect to a divine being or supernatural power. God claims worship as His exclusive right. "For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.' " (Matthew 4:10). And yet through the ages, men have worshipped many other things.

Worship is not something that is accidentally done. It requires conscious action on the part of the worshipper. "Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth"" (John 4:21-24). Worship requires a worshipper. In other words, worship is an action taken by people. The existence of a rock or a tree is not worship, nor can animals offer up worship. Worship also requires an object of worship, this is God. The worship must be done in proper spirit and it must be done in truth (as God commands).

The word "worship" is translated from the Hebrew word shachah and the Greek word proskuneo. Both words refer to a person willingly bowing himself to the ground before someone greater. The bowing represents the powerlessness of the person before the greater power. When Peter realized he was in the presence of the mighty God, he was struck with his own worthlessness. "Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, "Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." But Simon answered and said to Him, "Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net." And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!" For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken" (Luke 5:3-9). This is no different from Job's reaction to God's questions of his knowledge. When Paul looked back at the kindness of God in allowing him, of all people, to be His minister to the Gentiles, Paul bowed before God, asking that others comprehend what he had learned. "For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for you Gentiles-- if indeed you have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which was given to me for you, how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets: that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ through the gospel, of which I became a minister according to the gift of the grace of God given to me by the effective working of His power. To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ; to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him. Amen." (Ephesians 3:1-21).

Such should be the response of everyone whom God saves from their own wickedness. "You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created" (Revelation 4:11). "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!" (Revelation 5:12). Hence, true worship is our reaction to being in the presence of the Almighty.
