by Darryl Smelser

Today, I happened across a YouTube video produced by a former Mormon missionary and former Mormon believer. He spoke about the trauma his Mormon faith and specifically his 2-year mission put him through. I'd like to share an observation of his. Not from the video, but from his comments to me.

I commented on the video, asking him if he had any observations on how best to reach those young men when they come to our doors and how to help them see the fallacy of the Mormon system.

He replied to me as follows:

"I don't think you can. It has to be a personal journey, and they will be unable to look at it honestly until their nervous system feels safe enough to do so. I doubt that will happen on a stranger's doorstep. I think the only thing you can do is show love. When missionaries face aggression or hostility, it confirms their binary worldview. When they are met with unconditional love and acceptance...even as weird Mormon missionaries, it challenges their worldview. That's what eventually broke me: kind people who weren't Mormon and accepted me regardless of my faith. It broke my brain on how the world works."

Now I'm not sure which way he's using the word "acceptance," but some level of acceptance - acceptance of a person's worth for thoughtful and kind conversation - is appropriate. And "love" is certainly appropriate (and commanded) (Luke 6:35; Galatians 6:9-10).

What broke his indoctrinated brain was kind people who weren't Mormon.

I've heard multiple preaching brethren talk about welcoming LDS missionaries into their homes, and about how quickly they "shut down" those missionaries, and how quickly those missionaries gave up and left ("They were back out the door in 15 minutes!!"). Those comments I've seen and heard have come across with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

I believe most of my brethren are not like that, that most of you in this group are not like that. But I've seen it multiple times, and a few of those times have been in this group. So I thought I'd share this former missionary's perspective.

Firing arguments like torpedoes can be seen as standing for the truth, but it reinforces the Mormon binary worldview that Mormons are kind and others are not. They're not leaving your door because they saw the truth and didn't know how to deal with it. They're leaving because they see you as someone in the mold of the world.

Speak truth, but speak it in the language of love, patience, and kindness; that challenges their worldview.

brilliant garments, odors and music of the most ravishing nature, and
above all, the enjoyment of the Hur Al-Oyun, the black-eyed daughters of
paradise, created of pure musk, and free from all the bodily weaknesses of
the female sex, are held out as a reward to the commonest inhabitants of
paradise, who will always remain in the full vigor of their youth and
manhood” [McClintock and Strong, 1969].

seventh-century Arabia’s wealthiest nobles, men who enjoyed lavish feasts
in lush private gardens, in the region’s richest oases. Being poor, most of
Muhammad’s early followers only dreamt of such a life. Hence, this vision
of the super-rich lifestyle, taken to the nth degree, had strong appeal to
them. The Qur’an describes believers feasting in heaven amidst the richest
of fabrics and furnishings, and of rivers flowing with not just fresh
water—extremely scarce in the region—but also with milk, honey and
wine” [Mark Anderson, “Muslim Views of Heaven,” Zwemer Center for

by Steve Monts

In the Bible, we see that a prophet is likened to the mouth of God (Exodus 4:16; 7:1 - Aaron was called Moses' prophet, as he was his spokesman). They did not claim their message was theirs. They prefaced their message with, "Thus saith the Lord", and they foretold much about the future. Prophets played a crucial role in revealing God's will. Yet God knew that some would rise up claiming to be prophets when, in fact, they were not. He knew that if He were to give His divine will to some, others would claim to have it too. Thus, God devised a way to distinguish between those who were prophets and those who were not.

Deuteronomy 18:20-22 says when one supposes to speak for the Lord, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, then the Lord has not spoken. Galatians 1:6-9 adds that when anyone (including an angel or apostle) speaks a different gospel, then a curse rests upon him. These two passages say we can test the predictions made by supposed prophets and their words if in any way they contradict what is already revealed (the Bible).
Joseph Smith fails the test of a prophet because his predictions failed.

In Doctrine and Covenants, section 84, Joseph Smith prophesied that New Jerusalem and a Mormon temple were to be built in Zion, Missouri, by his generation and that he would dedicate it with his own hand. Yet Mormons were run out of Missouri, and a temple was never built during Smith's life, nor by his contemporary generation.

In Doctrine and Covenants, section 111, Joseph Smith prophesied that Salem, Massachusetts, would be given to the Mormons, and in it they would find great treasure to pay all their debts. The Mormons never received Salem or any treasure.

His book is full of errors. He writes of horses, oxen, and cows as native to North America (1 Nephi 18:25). Yet, these animals were all introduced by European settlers.

He has Jesus saying, "I am the alpha and omega" in the Book of Mormon. Those are Greek terms, but the Book of Mormon supposedly came to the Native American Indians, who would not have been familiar with Greek. It appears that Joseph Smith borrowed from the Bible and lied about the Indians.

His book is full of changes. I have in my possession a book entitled "The 3,913 changes made to the Book of Mormon". If Joseph Smith truly was a prophet from God, why would there need to be any changes? God's word does not change. There have been no changes to the Bible. Mormons claim their book is the most accurate translation, yet as time goes on, they keep "updating" their book.

The gift of prophecy ended long before Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith lived in the 1800s, yet the Bible tells us that when God's word was complete, prophecy would come to an end (I Corinthians 13:8). The word of God came to completion at the end of the first century. Jude wrote of "the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints." And when John laid down his pen, he closed the Scriptures with a warning not to add to it nor take from it (Revelation 22:18-19). Yet we are told to believe that nearly 1700 years later, a man came along and added more to it! Joseph Smith fails the test of a prophet and passes the test of a false prophet (Matthew 7:15-20).

Should we believe that God told Joseph Smith that we should all be a part of the Mormon Religion?

Members of the 'The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' claim the Book of Mormon is of divine origin. They believe it to be a book more important than the Bible, for they do not think the Bible, as we have it, is correctly translated. Mormons contend that Joseph Smith, Jr., born in Vermont in 1805, received visits from the Father and the Son, and from an angel named Moroni in 1820 and 1823. He also supposedly received ancient writings (600 BC - 421 AD) on golden plates that were hidden in a hill near Palmyra, New York, in 1829. The Book of Mormon, published in 1830, is said to be Smith's translation of the alleged golden plates.

However, The Book of Mormon is not of divine origin, and there are many ways in which this fact can be proven. In our limited space, we list only a few of them.

The Book of Mormon denies the claim of inspiration by its own words. The Book of Mormon says in

1 Nephi 1:3, "I make it according to my knowledge."

1Nephi 19:6 says, "I think it to be sacred...and if I do err..."

Jacob 7:26 says, "I have written according to the best of my knowledge."

Mormon 8:12 states, "Because of the imperfections which are in it."

Ether 5:1 says, "I have written the words according to my memory."

Jacob 1:2 says, "I should write upon these plates a few of the things which I consider to be most precious."

Thus, these statements from the Book of Mormon itself are proof that it is of human origin.

The Book of Mormon reveals itself to be a fraud through the use of copied words from the King James Version of the Bible. There are over 25,000 words taken directly from the King James version of 1611. How could the Book of Mormon have originated from the years of 600 BC to 421 AD and be written in the King's English of 1611 AD? For example, Mosiah 3:24, supposedly written in 124 BC, reads, "Whereof they shall be judged, every man according to his works, whether they be good or whether they be evil." Anyone can turn to II Corinthians 5:10 of the King James Version and see where these words came from. For other examples of this, see 2 Nephi 7, 8, and Moroni 7:45.

The Book of Mormon contradicts the Bible in many places. The following are just a couple of examples. The Book of Mormon says Jesus was to be born "at Jerusalem" (Alma 7:10). The Bible says, "in Bethlehem of Judea" (Matthew 2:1). The Book of Mormon has the church in existence more than a century before Christ (Mosiah 18:17). Jesus said, ten months before His crucifixion, "I will build My church" (Matthew16:18). No one can believe both the Bible and the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

This is only a small portion of the overwhelming evidence that supports the human origin of the Book of Mormon. Jesus instructed His apostles to teach "all things whatsoever I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:18-20). The apostles did not teach the Book of Mormon, for it was not published until 1830. Therefore, Jesus did not command the Book of Mormon. Jesus said the Holy Spirit would guide the apostles into all truth. When the Holy Spirit came, He did not guide the apostles into the Book of Mormon. Therefore, the Book of Mormon is not the truth, and we should not believe it (Galatians 1:6-9).

via Sentry Magazine, Vol. 16 No. 1, March 31, 1990

Joseph Smith Jr. was an amazing American who claimed to be a true prophet of God. Millions of people worldwide believed his claim, which resulted in one of the largest religious bodies in existence. Everyone should believe everything he said if his claim is valid and true. If it is false, he should be exposed as a fraud. This document aims to examine his prophetic credentials by examining his prophecies and testing him using the Bible.

Prophets are much more prominent in the Old Testament than in the New Testament. Many warnings were issued against men who claimed to be true prophets but who, in reality, were false prophets. Certain tests were outlined by which the people of God could determine whether a prophet was genuine or false. Deuteronomy 13:1-5 is one such scripture in the Bible dealing with false prophets. The test in the passage is whether the self-proclaimed prophet leads people from the true and living God to a false god.

Joseph Smith, Jr., had a unique view of God, which he claimed God revealed to him. That view is very basic to the Mormons and one of their very prominent doctrines. The doctrine is called "eternal progression." Smith, founder of Mormonism, in April 1844, delivered an oration to over 23,000 hearers which sets forth his view of his god (or gods). The sermon was a funeral oration in honor of King Follett. This man was not a king - his name was King Follett. He had been an ardent follower of Smith from the very early days of the Mormon movement. Smith included some thoughts about deity in the funeral oration. Please notice:

"I will prove that the world is wrong, by showing what God is. I am going to inquire after God; for I want you to know him, and to be familiar with Him; and if I am bringing you a knowledge of Him, all persecutions against me ought to cease. You will know that I am His servant; for I speak as one having authority."

From this statement, we are not to understand them as mere opinions of a preacher or religious leader but as those who claim that God directly revealed these things to a special man. The man in this case is Joseph Smith, Jr. Now, what is the character of the deity Smith wants his people to follow? Read carefully.

"God, himself, was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens."

Just a little later, Smith continued his description of his god in the following excerpt:

"I have got the oldest book in the world; but I have the oldest book in my heart, even the gift of the Holy Spirit, I have four Testaments. Come here ye learned men, and read, if you can. I should not have introduced this testimony, were it not to back up the word rosh-the head, the Father of the Gods. I should not have brought it up, only to show that I am right."

Listen even further:

"In the beginning, the head of the Gods called a council of the Gods; and they came together and concocted (prepared) a plan to create the world and people it. When we begin to learn this way, we begin to learn the only true God, and what kind of being we have got to worship. Having a knowledge of God, we begin to know how to approach Him, and how to ask so as to receive an answer."

This god of Mormonism was born like all other humans are born, grew up on some far away planet. He was baptized, married (likely to several women), produced many offspring, and progressed and was exalted to god status because of his faithfulness. His name was Ahman, according to Smith, who explained how he lives on a planet (or star) nearest the imaginary planet of "Kolob" and then was glorified, exalted into a tangible being. For further information on this, see Mormon Doctrine, by the late Bruce McKonkie, page 250. This book is a standard and authoritative work in Mormonism.

The question now is, is the god Smith asks people to follow the true and living God? The Book of Mormon was allegedly revealed by an angel to Smith, and he supposedly accurately translated the book out of "reformed Egyptian" into English. There is a very clear statement in the Mormon scripture about the nature of God. Oddly enough, the very same language Smith used to describe the character of God is found in the Book of Mormon- What is the true God?

This doctrine, allegedly revealed by angelic authority and correctly translated by Smith in what he immodestly proclaimed to be "the most correct book in all the world," states that there is really only one God. The Book of Mormon claims this is the only true doctrine of Christ concerning God's character. It also claims that God has not changed. Read now from the book.

"And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Chrsit, and the only true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end. Amen.

"And now if ye have imagined up unto yourselves a god who doth vary, and in whom there is a show of changing then have ye imagined up unto yourselves a god who is not a God of miracles."

These facts establish irrefutable proof that Joseph Smith, Jr., was fully false one time or another. Either he lied when he claimed that the Book of Mormon was revealed to him by angels and translated correctly, or he lied when he claimed to have been given special revelation that his god is really just one of many millions of deities. A prophet would not lead people away from the one true and living God to a false god.

via Sentry Magazine, Vol. 15, No. 2, June 30, 1989

The word polygamy and the thought of religious orders summons up the name "Mormon." The Mormons are one of the few religions professing some relation to Jesus Christ that have openly sanctioned and sometimes required polygamy. Their founder, Joseph Smith, Jr., openly practiced it. Brigham Young, one of the successors to Smith’s heritage, was a polygamist. There are still traces of some brands of Mormonism that engage in polygamy. Their history has a black mark on it due to their blind following of Smith's imaginary revelation regarding the taking of multiple wives.

Mormon pioneers brought polygamy to Utah in the 1840s after it was introduced by the Mormon leader and founder, Joseph Smith, Jr. He claimed it was a divinely inspired plan from God. In one of their "sacred writings," called Doctrine and Covenants, Smith gave his church the revelation. Please read it, but remember, it is only human "sacred scripture," not divinely inspired by the Almighty.

Doctrine and Covenants 131:51-55 reads:

51. Verily, I say unto you: A commandment I give unto mine handmaid, Emma Smith, your wife, whom I have given unto you, that she stay herself and partake not of that which I commanded you to offer unto her; for I did it, saith the Lord, to prove you all, as I did Abraham, and that I might require an offering at your hand, by covenant and sacrifice.

52. And let mine handmaid, Emma Smith, receive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph, and who are virtuous and pure before me; and those who are not pure, and have said they were pure, shall be destroyed, saith the Lord God.

53. For I am the Lord thy God, and ye shall obey my voice; and I give unto my servant Joseph that he shall be made ruler over many things; for he hath been; faithful over a few things, and from henceforth I will strengthen him.

54. And I command mine handmaid Emma Smith, to abide and cleave unto my servant Joseph, and to none else. But if she will not abide this commandment she shall be destroyed, saith the Lord; for I am the Lord thy God, and will destroy her if she abide not in my law.

55. But if she will not abide this commandment, then shall my servant Joseph do all things for her even as he had said; and I will bless and multiply him and give unto him an hundredfold in this world of fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, houses and lands, wives and children, and crowns of eternal lives in the eternal worlds.

The "wives" promised to Smith is the first indication of polygamous doctrines in the history of Mormonism. To both Mormons and non-Mormons alike, it might seem to be adultery. Smith certainly wanted to avoid this allegation. Thus, to remove any such charges against the High Priest of Mormonism, verses 60-66 were added by this accommodative type of "revelation."

60. Let no one, therefore, set on my servant Joseph; for I will justify him; for he shall do the sacrifice which I require at his hands for his transgressions, saith the Lord your God.

61. And again, as pertaining to the law of the priesthood—if any man espouse a virgin, and desire to espouse another, and the first give her consent, and if he espouse the second, and they are virgins, and have vowed to no other man, then is he justified; he cannot commit adultery for they are given unto him; for he cannot commit adultery with that that belongeth unto him and to no one else.

62. And if he have ten virgins given unto him by this law, he cannot commit adultery, for they belong to him and they are given unto him; therefore, he is justified.

Other Mormon Leaders and Polygamy:

Joseph F. Smith, Journal of Discourses, Volume 20, page 28 said,

"The principle (of plural marriage) is correct, great, enobling (sic.) and calculated to bring joy, satisfaction, and peace if we would but observe and practice it as we should. But in order to do this we must get wisdom and understanding..."

"Some people have supposed that the doctrine of plural marriage was a sort of superfluity, or non-essential to the salvation or exaltation of mankind. In other words, some of the Saints have said, and believe, that a man with one wife, sealed to him by the authority of the Priesthood for time and eternity, will receive an exaltation as great and glorious, if he is faithful, as he possibly could with more than one. I want to here enter my solemn protest against this idea, for I know it is false. There is no blessing promised except upon conditions, and no blessing can be obtained by mankind except by faithful compliance with the condition, or law, upon which the same is promised. The marriage of one woman to a man for time and eternity by the sealing power, according to the law of God, is a fulfillment of the celestial law of marriage in part—and is good so far as it goes—and so far as a man abides these conditions of law, he will receive his reward therefor, and this reward, or blessing, he could not obtain on any other grounds or conditions. But this is only the beginning of the law, not the whole of it. Therefore, whoever has imagined he could obtain the fulness of the blessings pertaining to this celestial law, by complying with only a portion of its conditions, has deceived himself. He cannot do it. When that principle was revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith, he very naturally shrank, in his feelings, from the responsibilities thereby imposed upon him; fore-• seeing, as he did in part, the apparently insurmountable difficulties in the way of establishing it, in the face of popular opinion, the traditions and customs of many generations, the frown, ridicule, slander, opposition and persecution of the world. Yes, this man of God. who dared to meet the opposition of the whole world with bold and fearless front, who dared to dis-nute the religious authority and accumulated learning anl wisdom of the age--who dared everything for the truth and shrank not even from the sacrifice of his own life in testimony of his divine mission, shrank, in his feelings from the weight of the responsibility of inaugurating and establishing this new innovation upon the established customs of the world. But he did not falter, although it was not until an angel of God with a drawn sword, stood before him and commanded that he should enter into the practice of that principle, or he should be utterly destroyed, or rejected, that he moved forward to reveal and establish that doctrine.

"To put this matter more correctly before you, I here declare that the principle of plural marriage was not first revealed on the 12th day of July, 1843. It was written for the first time on that date, but it had been revealed to the Prophet many years before that, perhaps as early as 1832. About this time, or subsequently, Joseph, the Prophet, intrusted (sic.) this fact to Oliver Cowdery; he abused the confidence imposed in him, and brought reproach upon himself, and thereby upon the church by 'running before he was sent,' and 'taking liberties without license,' so to speak, hence the publication by O. Cowdery, about this time, of an article on; marriage, which was carefully worded, and afterwards found its way into the Doctrine and Covenants without authority. This article explains itself to those who understand the facts, and it an indisputable evidence of the early existence of the knowledge of the principle of patriarchal marriage by the Prophet Joseph, and also by Oliver Cowdery." [From a speech entitled, "Plural Marriage," delivered in the Tabernacle, Salt Lake City, Utah, Sunday morning July 7, 1878].

In response to the Mormon leader, polygamy cannot please God for it has never been pleasing to Him for more than two beings to enter any marriage. Jesus objected to deviations from God's original plan for marriage. To the Pharisees, experts at loophole invention, He asked, "Have ye not read, that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh?" (Matthew 19:4-5). Of two, not one or three, God makes a marriage. Any marriage made in heaven and approved by God has only two parties. What comes with more than that comes from man and evil.

The apostle Paul dealt with some family problems in his letter to the church at Ephesus. To correct their problems, he cited the example of the marriage of Christ to the church. Notice, "For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for it..." (Ephesians 5:23-25). The language is precise enough. It eliminates any polygamous relationship. It does not say, "husband (singular) love your wives," but puts husband in the plural. It does not say "wives (plural) be in subjection to your husband." Gleason Archer's comment is very appropriate and has already been cited above.

More Accommodative Revelation to the Rescue

A Mormon document called the "Official Declaration" or "Manifesto" contains the following response to their difficulties with polygamy: First, we must realize how polygamy evolved among Mormons and how reactionaries to the practice felt about it. These factors made a balancing "revelation" from the Mormon "Seer" necessary.

Joseph Smith first received "revelation" concerning the principle of plural marriage during the 1830s, but Mormons claim he was not permitted to teach it at that time. It was not until 1841, after the Mormons had settled in Nauvoo, that this principle was taught and practiced secretly. In 1852, the doctrine was announced publicly for the first time.

One Mormon scholar says it is impossible to state exactly how many were involved in the practice of plural marriage. "Reliable estimates vary from 2 to 3 percent if only married men are counted, or about 10 to 15 percent if men, women, and children are included. Church leaders enforced strict standards in connection with authorizing plural marriages. Even though there were some abuses which attracted publicity, most plural families enjoyed rich spiritual blessings and a variety of other advantages if they were willing to put forth the requisite effort to live in this system of marriage." [Richard O. Cowan, Doctrine & Covenants, Our Modern Scripture, Young House, Brigham Young University Press, Revised Edition, 1979, pages 207-208].

The U.S. Congress passed the first anti-bigamy law in 1862, but the Civil War and Reconstruction delayed its enforcement. In 1882, the Edmunds Law made it a crime to marry a plural wife (new plural marriage) or to live with one (polygamist cohabitation). The decade of the 1880s was a period of very bitter anti-Mormon agitation, resulting in the passage of the Edmunds-Tucker Law in 1887, under which church property was confiscated, and many Latter-day Saints were prevented from voting and holding office. By May 1889, the Supreme Court had upheld the Constitutionality of this law, and members of Congress were considering even stricter measures.

Cowan adds, "In this setting, the President of the Church, Wilford Woodruff, had a most difficult decision. His choice was not between obeying a law of God or a law of man, but rather between two divine precepts, because the Lord had commanded obedience to the Constitutional law of the land. (See D&C 98:5; 58:21.) President Woodruff received a revelation showing him that under existing conditions it would be best to suspend the practice of plural marriage." [Ibid.]

Next, the Endowment House, an adobe structure on Temple Square that had been built as a place where Mormonism's "sacred ordinances" could be performed until the Salt Lake Temple was finished, was torn down during the spring of 1889 when Woodruff learned that unauthorized marriages were being performed there. For a year and a half, charges persisted that the Mormons were still sanctioning polygamous marriages. President Woodruff issued the "Official Declaration" or "Manifesto" before the October Conference in 1890 to answer these attacks. He subsequently explained :

The Latter-day Saints should not get the idea that the Lord has forsaken His people, or that He does not reveal His mind and will; because such an idea is not true. The Lord is with us, and has been with us from the beginning. This Church has never been led a day except by revelation.
Read the life of Brigham Young and you can hardly find a revelation that he had wherein he said, "Thus saith the Lord;" but the Holy Ghost was with him; He taught by Inspiration and by revelation ... Joseph said "Thus saith the Lord" almost every day of his life in laying the foundation of this work. But those who followed him have not deemed it always necessary to say "Thus saith the Lord;" yet they have led the people by the power of the Holy Ghost.

I have had some revelations of late, and very important ones to me, and I will tell you what the Lord has said to me.

The Lord showed me by vision and revelation exactly what would take place if we did not stop this practice (polygamy).

I should have let all the temples go out of our hands; I should have gone to prison myself, and let every other man go there, had not the God of heaven commanded me to do what I did do ... I went before the Lord and I wrote what the Lord told me to write. [Deseret News, November 7, 1891.]

It was agreed by Church leaders and non-Mormon officials that new polygamous marriages would not be allowed, but that those who had entered plural marriage before the Manifesto was issued could continue to live with these families without fear of prosecution. Under these terms, Utah was admitted as one of the United States in 1896. In 1904, President Joseph F. Smith again upheld the principles outlined in the Official Declaration and stressed that the Church would not sanction plural marriages anywhere in the world. Since that time, a few small groups have gained notoriety by their practice of polygamy, but such persons are subject to excommunication from the Church.

There is more than the endorsement of polygamy in all this. The foolishness of conjured and created revelations is blatantly false. This, however, offers us a little background into the past teachings and practices of Mormonism. There are still some who claim that "Joseph Smith is the prophet of God" and vow and declare that he alone makes monogamy a less than desirable marriage relationship. That is why, from time to time, one reads of some "wildcat" Mormon group that must be legally forced to cease and desist this immoral practice.

Much more could be said about this practice, but hopefully, enough has been said to provoke thought further into this topic, the other marital difficulties that are engendered when God's sacred laws are not revered and practiced with the strictness they naturally demand.

Question:

Hello,

There is an article (You don't understand. Joseph Smith didn't contradict himself) on the La Vista church website that dates to 2009. And funnily enough, I had a conversation with a church of Christ pastor back in 2008 about that very subject. He had a binder on Mormonism and just read objections about the faith.

I hope that as you read these things, you’ll be aware of how you feel, that you will be able to feel the love our Heavenly Father has for you, and that the things I’m saying are…

A few points of correction.

The first point is that the Book of Mormon talks about a spiritual aspect of the Lord dwelling in the hearts of men. The author of that post failed to read the preceding verse:

v35
For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his; therefore, the Spirit of the Lord hath withdrawn from you, and hath no place in you, and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked.

So the point, "Your point is that Joseph Smith was arguing from a physical standpoint while in the book of Alma, he was talking from a spiritual standpoint," fails to take into account that the Book of Mormon verse is talking about the third member of the Godhead, the Holy Ghost.

Joseph was taking about the Father and the Son not being able to dwell in our hearts literally because They have bodies.

The scripture used to try to refute the doctrine of God being a Spirit, as used in the Book of Mormon, was actually a missionary teaching a nonbeliever king who just believed in a Great Spirit. The missionary uses the king's belief to help them understand the truth. So, that proof isn't even accurate to the narrative of the text. It seems either a falsehood or an argument from ignorance. I just want your article to reflect the correct information.

The Bible teaches God is Spirit, and Joseph also taught that all spirit is matter. God has a Spirit and a Body. Moses and Isaiah both saw God's body. Stephen sees Christ standing on the right hand of the Father.

The issue raised with Doctrine and Covenants 84 and"in this generation" was the same issue brought up with my friend's brother, who is still a church of Christ pastor. The issue with this argumentation is that Jesus Christ uses the same term.

Here is a great answer on section 84:

"Why does the LDS Church still teach that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God after he made a false prophecy about a temple being built in Missouri in his generation (Doctrine and Covenants 84:1-5)?
Because we know that many words, such as generation, aren’t limited to only one definition.

One valuable but often overlooked resource in understanding Joseph Smith and his environment is Webster’s 1828 dictionary, which provides a snapshot of how Americans understood the English language during the 19th century. Here’s a screengrab from the online version of that dictionary:

If we want to hold generation to only one definition, 2 is the one that will do the job in discrediting Joseph Smith’s prophecy. Sort of. (More on that below.)

But look at definitions 5 and 6. By the time this revelation was received in 1832, some of the Church’s notable future leaders (such as Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball) had joined it along with their families, and elements of those families have remained with the Church ever since. There were also times in the 19th century when it was fashionable among bigots to claim that members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were a separate race from other Americans; it has always been easier for some to justify their prejudices by claiming the targets of their disdain are of a lesser race.

Another scripture of interest is 1 Peter 2:9–10, which states,

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Peter was addressing a diverse audience, “the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia” (1 Peter 1:1), who certainly were not all of the same race, ethnicity, or age groups. But by becoming followers of Jesus Christ they had become a “chosen generation” and “the people of God.”

My point here is that as long as the Latter-day Saints retain their identity as followers of Jesus Christ, this generation has not yet passed away!

But let’s look at the verses cited in the question.

A revelation of Jesus Christ unto his servant Joseph Smith, Jun., and six elders, as they united their hearts and lifted their voices on high.

Yea, the word of the Lord concerning his church, established in the last days for the restoration of his people, as he has spoken by the mouth of his prophets, and for the gathering of his saints to stand upon Mount Zion, which shall be the city of New Jerusalem.

Which city shall be built, beginning at the temple lot, which is appointed by the finger of the Lord, in the western boundaries of the State of Missouri, and dedicated by the hand of Joseph Smith, Jun., and others with whom the Lord was well pleased.

Verily this is the word of the Lord, that the city New Jerusalem shall be built by the gathering of the saints, beginning at this place, even the place of the temple, which temple shall be reared in this generation.

For verily this generation shall not all pass away until an house shall be built unto the Lord, and a cloud shall rest upon it, which cloud shall be even the glory of the Lord, which shall fill the house. (Doctrine and Covenants 84:1–5)

Again, only a very simplistic and close-minded reading of these verses yields the result our questioner is looking for.

It states that New Jerusalem’s construction will begin at the temple lot, a specific location in western Missouri that had been identified by Joseph through revelation.

But then look at the last two verses quoted. The city of New Jerusalem would be “built by the gathering of the saints, beginning at this place, even the place of the temple, which temple shall be reared in this generation.”

Where did “the gathering of the saints” begin? Kirtland, Ohio.

Where was the “place” Joseph Smith was at when he received this revelation? Kirtland.

Where was the first latter-day temple built? Kirtland.

Did God’s glory fill the temple? Oh my, yes.

The Kirtland Temple was dedicated on March 27, 1836, less than four years after the revelation in question was received. After the temple was dedicated, people spoke in tongues, reported seeing angels, and experienced other manifestations of divine power.

A week after the dedication, on April 3, Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery were together in the temple when Jesus Christ appeared to both of them (remember what the Bible says about witnesses?). This was followed by visits from Moses, Elias, and Elijah, all of whom conferred the priesthood keys they had held in their dispensations on Joseph and Oliver.

Interestingly, April 3, 1836, happened to be both Easter Sunday and Passover that year (the only year that happened in the 19th century), and observant Jews kept a place at their Passover tables for Elijah’s return, as prophesied in the final chapter of Malachi.

So, how did Joseph Smith happen to find the most appropriate date in his lifetime for reporting Elijah’s return to the temple if he wasn’t a prophet? Can you, gentle reader, think of a better explanation that doesn’t depend on mere coincidence?

One can see “this generation” being used the same way in Matthew 24:29–34, and one can see that all of the events Jesus described in those verses have not yet been fulfilled roughly 2,000 years later. If Joseph Smith made a false prophecy, then by the same standard, Jesus also made a false prophecy.

But if you want to argue like an atheist and ignore the multiple meanings of words, that’s your responsibility. Please don’t be surprised when your refusal to be taken in by Jesus Christ and His prophets results in being left out when Jesus gathers His followers to Himself.

Hopefully, this clarifies a few things instead of just reading from an old binder.

Answer:

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I didn't use notes "from an old binder" when I composed my reply.

I do find your need for gymnastics with the English language to uphold your points disappointing.

You appeal to feelings to support your position. Yet, God long ago stated, "He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but he who walks wisely will be delivered" (Proverbs 28:26). Feelings are unreliable and liable to change. Wise use of God's teachings is required to understand the truth.

Joseph Smith claimed, and you agreed, that the Father and the Son cannot dwell in people's hearts. You draw that conclusion because Smith claimed that the Father and the Son have physical bodies. Isn't it odd that you also claim that the Spirit doesn't have a body and yet is also God. Why would the Godhead be of different natures? "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth" (John 4:24).

And this I know, because the Lord hath said he dwelleth not in unholy temples, but in the hearts of the righteous doth he dwell; yea, and he has also said that the righteous shall sit down in his kingdom, to go no more out; but their garments should be made white through the blood of the Lamb. [Book of Mormon, Alma 34:35-36]

The passage from Alma does talk about the Spirit of the Lord, but the next verse states that the Lord dwells. The Spirit is not titled "the Lord." The Spirit is of the Lord, so there are two being discussed. I know Joseph Smith denied what this passage clearly states. That is the whole point being made.

Besides, Joseph Smith contradicted the Bible.

"If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness" (Romans 8:10).

"To whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory" (Colossians 1:27).

"Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, 'I will dwell in them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people'" (II Corinthians 6:16).

As pointed out in my original answer, your definition of "this generation" does not match how Joseph Smith used the phrase throughout his writings. If Kirkland was the fulfillment, then why are you so set on redefining what "this generation" means? Besides, the text clearly states that Joseph Smith was talking about Missouri, not Ohio.

By the way, Matthew 24:29-34 discusses the fall of Jerusalem, which took place in the generation Jesus was talking to. See The Fall of Jerusalem.

Mormons have told me that if I pray for Spirit guidance, the Spirit will make it clear that the Book of Mormon is from God. Well, I prayed that God would make it clear to me whether the Bible is His complete revelation or if the Book of Mormon is indeed “another Testament of Jesus Christ” as they claim, and here is what the Spirit told me:

The Spirit said clearly that the eye-witness apostles of Jesus were to be guided into all truth (John 16:13), and the Spirit said that they preached “the whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27).

The Spirit told me that if any man or angel preaches any other gospel than those apostles preached (Galatians 1:6-10), “let him be accursed.”

The Spirit told me to “test all things” (I Thessalonians 5:21) and told me to “try the spirits because many false prophets have gone out into the world” (I John 4:1f).

The Spirit led me to these conclusions:

The truth was complete in the first century,

nothing pertaining to the Book of Mormon was given to the apostles, and therefore, they said nothing about it;

people of all nations were saved without the Book of Mormon for centuries;

the whole counsel of God was without the Book of Mormon.

Thus, the Spirit told me to let those who peddle the Book of Mormon be accursed.

The Spirit also told me to “mark those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned and avoid them” (Romans 16:17). Nobody learned the Book of Mormon in the first century.

The Spirit also told me that “whoever goes onward and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God” (II John 9-10). The doctrine of Christ did not include the Book of Mormon.

The Spirit told me to love and care for people who have been deceived but not to encourage them to continue in their error and deception (Jude 22-23) and, if possible, try to snatch them out of the fire. But the Spirit also told me that I can’t save everyone because some are like swine who have no appreciation for truth, and you might be wasting time with some, and that would be like “casting pearls before swine” (Matthew 7:6).

The Spirit told me to recognize that some people are not conditioned to be honest with the word, and they “handle the word deceitfully” (II Corinthians 4:2-4) and that Satan has blinded people. Sometimes, you cannot persuade them to believe the truth because they prefer a “strong delusion” over the truth (II Thessalonians 2:11-12).

The Spirit told me that many will say “God told me” when He had not (Ezekiel 13:7) and that they speak from their own hearts' vain imaginations.

So, the Spirit told me to search the Scriptures to find out what is so (Acts 17:11) and test all things by the complete Scriptures (II Tim.3:16,17) that were “once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3-4) in the first century. I intend to hear what the Spirit says to all the churches from the first century until now.

Are you listening to the Spirit?

The Book of Mormon contradicts the Bible and was a work of fiction written by Joseph Smith in the 1800s, who copied much of it from the King James Version, trying to make it look like an ancient manuscript. Here is proof that the Book of Mormon isn’t true:

Proof that Joseph Smith Copied out of the King James Version

Helaman 12:25-25 says, "we read..." and then it quotes John 5:29. Helaman was supposedly written in 6 BC, according to the date given in the Book of Mormon. The Book of John was written nearly 100 years after 6 BC. How could Helaman quote John before it was written and even use the King James Version to do it? Obviously, someone living after the 1611 King James Version was written had to write Helaman. (It was Joseph Smith.)

The Book of Mormon sounds biblical because some 27,000 words are copied directly from the King James Bible. Hundreds of verses are copied verbatim. II Nephi, chapters 12-24 are copied from Isaiah 2-14, III Nephi 24 & 25 are copied from Malachi 3-4, and I Nephi 20-21 are copied from Isaiah 48-49 except for a few additions in the Book of Mormon.

Even the italicized words from the King James Version are copied. The italicized words in the King James Version were not in the original text but were added by the translators to clarify thought. The King James Version was completed in 1611 AD, and the Book of Mormon was published in 1830. This is indisputable proof that the Book of Mormon was written after 1611 and not many centuries before.

Proof that Joseph Smith Fabricated the Book of Mormon

The French word "adieu" closes the Book of Jacob (Jacob 7:27). The Book of Mormon supposedly dates Jacob between 544 and 421 BC. The French language didn't even exist until around 700 AD. Joseph Smith lived in the 1800s and included the French word when he made up the Book of Mormon. This proves the book was written after 700 AD and is a false document.

Joseph Smith Got Confused and Made a Mistake

Alma 13:1 says, "And again my brethren, I would cite your minds forward to the time when the Lord God gave these commandments." Was this time past or future? Joseph Smith, who fabricated the Book of Mormon, made a mistake here because he lived in the 1800s and got confused about the tenses.

Joseph Smith Forgot to Check the Map

According to I Nephi 2:5-8, the River Laman emptied into the Red Sea. However, there are no rivers in Arabia, and no river empties into the Red Sea. Joseph Smith didn't know this when he wrote the Book of Mormon. This is another proof Joseph Smith made this up.

How Could They Use Things Before They Were Invented?

The Book of Mormon speaks of “steel” (Ether 7:8,9, 1 Nephi 4:9) and breakable “glass” windows (2:23) back in Abraham's time. Neither had been invented at that time. This is another proof that Joseph Smith was thinking about his day when he wrote the Book of Mormon.

No Archeological Evidence for the Book of Mormon

“The whole face of the land had become covered with buildings” (Mormon 1:7). “Two million Jaredites slain” (Ether 15:2) 38 cities are cataloged in the Book of Mormon, along with iron, steel, brass, coins, swords, breast-plates, shields, armor, or chariots. Yet, not one item mentioned in the Book of Mormon has ever been discovered in America.

Make a Hole in the Bottom of the Boat to Get Air?

In Ether 2:16-3:6, the Lord instructs Jared’s brother to build eight barges. God tells Jared’s brother to “make a hole in the top, and also in the bottom; and when thou shalt suffer for air thou shalt unstop the hole and receive air.”

The Only Perfect Translation?

The Book of Mormon claims to be a perfect translation because Joseph Smith supposedly used Crystal Glasses to get the perfect word-for-word translation, yet there have been over 4,000 changes in the Book of Mormon since the first edition came out.

How Could Animals Be in America Before They Were Brought Here?

The Book of Mormon speaks of sheep, swine, horses, and elephants — even though Europeans didn’t bring them to America until centuries later in post-Columbian times. Again, we see that Joseph Smith was thinking about animals in his current day as he was fabricating the Book of Mormon.

The Book of Mormon Contradicts the Bible

According to Alma 7:10, Jesus Christ was to be born in Jerusalem. The Bible says He was born at Bethlehem (Micah 5:2, Luke 2:4).

Helaman 14:20, 27 says darkness covered the whole earth for three days at Jesus' death. Matthew 27:45, Mark 15:33, and Luke 23:44 say three hours.

According to Alma 46:15, believers are called Christians in 73 BC. Why is this wrong? Jesus hadn’t come yet! Acts 11:26 says they were first called Christians at Antioch (42 AD).

Moroni 10:19,21 says that spiritual gifts will never pass away. I Corinthians 13:8-10 says the spiritual gifts will pass away.

by Terry Wane Benton

Paul said he had preached “the whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27) but never the Quran or the Book of Mormon. Therefore, neither of those is part of God’s counsel, and we need not pretend or believe they are.

Jesus promised that His eye-witnessing apostles would be guided into all truth by the Helper, the Holy Spirit (John 16:13). But the Spirit did not guide them to write or preach the Book of Mormon or the Quran in their lives. Therefore, neither of those is part of the truth. All truth was delivered in the time of Jesus’ apostles. It was not that they were guided into some truth and then later men would deliver some more, but all truth would come through the first apostles, who were actual eye-witnesses and Ambassadors for Jesus.

They preached the gospel for all nations (Matthew 28:19), meaning there would not be “another testament of Jesus Christ” for the American nations and another gospel for the other nations. One gospel contained the whole counsel of God for all nations. Therefore, “if any man or even an angel from heaven preaches any other gospel than what we have preached, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:6-10). The Book of Mormon purports to be “another Testament of Jesus Christ.” Therefore, the Holy Spirit instructs us to “let them be accursed.”

If all nations could be saved by the gospel Paul preached, and Paul did not preach the Quran or the Book of Mormon, and Mormons themselves say their book is another testament, then it is not the same counsel given by the apostles of Jesus, and therefore, we have no choice but to “let them be accursed.” If people were saved by the whole counsel of God from the first century to the seventh century without the Quran, then we do not need the Quran to be saved or to give us any enlightenment about God. The whole counsel about what we need to know about God and His will was already fully revealed. The Scriptures “completely furnished” the man of God in the first century (II Timothy 3:16-17). Therefore, the Quran does not furnish the man of God with anything needed.

If people were saved by the gospel of the New Testament of Jesus Christ from the first century to the 19th century, before the Book of Mormon was produced through Joseph Smith, we could be saved without the Book of Mormon. We will be accursed if we accept the Book of Mormon, another gospel and testament. When God gave the whole counsel in the first century, nothing can be added to it later. Jude said the faith was “once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3-4). John closes the book of Revelation with a warning of curses being added to those who add to this book (Revelation 22:18). Paul said that even if an angel from heaven taught something the apostles did not already teach, let even the angel be accursed.

So, God was serious about giving all truth through His eye-witness apostles, serious about giving the whole counsel through them, serious about us not accepting another piece of counsel later on, and serious about tampering with His completed Scriptures by adding additional things He did not reveal and confirm through those original apostles. Everything is to be checked by the Scriptures available in the first century. Anything later is fraudulent and to be rejected as accursed of God. Check everything, even claims of God talking directly to people today apart from the scriptures. They are deceived; we must not be gullible and accept their deception as truth from God. The whole counsel was delivered in the first century through Jesus’ specially chosen apostles, whom He fully equipped with miraculous signs to confirm their message was from God (Mark 16:20; Hebrews 2:1-4). The Bible alone is God’s full and final revelation, and it gives us the words that will judge us on the last day (John 12:48). No one will be judged by the Quran or the Book of Mormon. So, stay with the whole counsel that will be the source from which our lives will be judged.

The whole counsel of God is in the Bible alone. Take heed to read it diligently and act on the “perfect (compete) law of liberty” (James 1:21f). The truth and nothing but the truth can set you free from the many errors peddled by men today!
