by Charles Box

Our dress in worship is not a "fashion show." But, is it possible to become too casual, too indiscreet, or too revealing in our manner of dress when we gather for worship? Recently, we were visiting a Wednesday night church service, and near us sat a girl wearing flip-flops and short shorts. She was not a little girl. She was a grown-up mama girl. She, her husband, and a little boy, about 11 or 12 years old, were there for the Bible study. They might have been visitors, too, for all I know. I saw some real positive things from this family. They were where they needed to be on a Wednesday night. They were there as a family. They were sitting together, singing, praying, and studying God's word. It is not my belief that a person must wear fine, expensive clothes to worship God. However, our manner of dress does seem to reflect our attitude concerning the occasion for which we are gathered.

The way we dress should be in keeping with the occasion. I have never observed a person wearing flip-flops and short shorts, or similar clothing, at a funeral. In fact, at a funeral, you see an old boy with a suit and tie on, and it is obvious that he has not been dressed this way in a long time, if ever. He just wanted to be dressed properly for the occasion, or at least his wife wanted him dressed that way! Some say, "It does not matter how you dress when you go to church." Of course, we understand the terminology, even though it is incorrect. We do not "go to church." "Church" is something that you were added to if you are saved. (Acts 2:47) We attend the assemblies of the church. (Hebrews 10:25) There is one sense in which how you dress does not matter. If you are poor, be in the assembly with the clothing you have, and you can honor God. If you are rich, be in the assembly with the clothing you have, and you can honor God. One of the things I so love about the church I attend is that everyone is welcome, and there is no respect of persons based on social or financial standing. (Acts 10:34-35) This is a church where everybody is somebody.

However, there is another sense in which how we dress does matter. Our dress says something about our attitude; it shows who we are, what we think of ourselves, and how we want to influence those around us.

The place of reverence in the assemblies

Reverence is a word that expresses our attitude toward God Himself. "God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him" (Psalms 89:7). Observe that God is greatly to be feared and to be had in reverence in the assembly. Reverence is an attitude that one would have toward another whom they feel to be superior. "Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever" (I Kings 1:31). Our dress says much about our reverence or respect for God. Observe what Joseph did when he was called to appear before Pharaoh, the king. "Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh" (Genesis 41:14). What do we do when we go in to appear before the "King of kings and Lord of lords"? Do we just put on our flip-flops and short shorts and go right on in? When we come before God in worship and serve Him daily, our attitude must be that of awe, respect, and reverence. Let us ever keep before us God's majesty and His holiness. "Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear" (Hebrews 12:28). When we come before God, we must have a deep and abiding respect for Him. "But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him" (Habakkuk 2:20).

The attitude of respect for God

Is your attitude toward God what it should be? Our actions are a direct reflection of our attitudes. How we dress and conduct ourselves either shows reverence, awe, love, faith, and trust toward God or a lack thereof. We demonstrate our reverence by our actions. “Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22). Godly, Christian attitudes are absolutely necessary if we are to go to heaven. David wrote, "Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name" (Psalms 100:2-4). Our actions, including the way we dress, must be guided by the great respect we have for God and for His revealed will. Modest clothing is the way women who are "professing godliness" dress. Certainly, a woman or man whose clothing is not modest is not professing godliness or reverence by the way they dress. "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works" (I Timothy 2:9-10). The wearing of lewd and revealing clothing to worship God is unthinkable, but some do it anyway.

We live in an age that treats everything as common. We live in a day and age that treats everything as common, even worship. The attitude of Christians must far exceed that of the world when it comes to our dress. Our dress in the assemblies must be pure, proper, and reverent. Our dress should not be showy, nor should it be sloppy. When we worship, we must come into God's presence with reverence and respect. Though there are no specific Biblical instructions about what to wear in the worship service, the dress of both men and women should show respect for the Creator of the universe. Dressing with respect is a good rule for every occasion. Dress with respect for yourself, respect for others, and especially respect for God. It should be the goal of every Christian to be careful, thoughtful, and appropriate in our dress. Let us

Recognize the need for modesty and reverence (Genesis 3:6-11),

Understand that we are in a battle against worldliness (Romans 12:2),

Live as unattached from the world (I John 2:15-17), and

Dress with a God-centered hope in mind.

The purpose of this article is not to bash women for the way they dress. Dressing properly for the occasion should be the desire of both men and women. Remember, modesty is first and foremost a matter of reverence and respect for God. Each Christian should dress for the glory of God. (I Corinthians 10:31)

To become a Christian, hear God's word (Romans 10:17), believe in Jesus (John 8:24, repent of sins (Acts 17:30-31), confess Jesus as Lord (Romans 10:9-10), and be baptized into Christ. (Galatians 3:26-27) After baptism, you should show by your manner of life that you are a child of God. A person should ask himself, "What does my dress tell others about me? Does it bring glory to God?"

In a few weeks, summer will arrive. The cold days of winter and the rainy days of spring will be behind us, and we'll be enjoying warm sunny days. Seasonal change is a wonderful part of God's creation (Genesis 8:22). Unfortunately, summer brings with it the problem of immodest apparel.

Let's first define our subject. Immodest is defined as "lacking modesty; offending sexual mores in conduct or appearance; indecent; not properly restrained." Apparel is "clothing, especially outer garments; attire." Putting these definitions together, we could define immodest apparel as "outer garments that lack modesty; indecent or unrestrained." What apparel is immodest? I suppose it depends on who you ask and the standards used to determine what belongs in the category. Shouldn't we let God set the standard?

Our example and influence. "Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity" (I Timothy 4:12).

In Las Vegas, where I preached for many years, the weather was quite warm for approximately ten months of the year. Immodest dress was a constant problem. Sadly, when the temperature goes up, the clothes come off or get shorter. Whenever some of the brethren and I discussed the clothes they were wearing (or not wearing), they would reply, "If you have a problem with the way I dress, that's your problem." The teaching in the above passage never crossed their minds. Are we responsible for how we dress and how it affects others who see us? Absolutely! We can present stumbling blocks before our brethren (Romans 14:13). If a person's clothing causes a member of the opposite sex to lust, both (the person who lusts and the one who dresses immodestly) sin.

Brethren, how can anyone say that wearing a tight-fitting, revealing bathing suit at a public pool or water park and showing our bodies to others (men or women), perhaps causing them to lust, makes it the other person's problem? Are we showing proper love for our brethren and fellow men when we cause their minds to stray into sin? This type of "brother keepers" is not what God had in mind.

Christians need to remember who they are and for what they stand. We are to let our lights shine before men, to glorify God (Matthew 5:13-16). God's people think, act, and dress differently. Paul warned of the dangers of conforming to the world (Romans 12:1-2).

Let me speak plainly. God's people have no business wearing anything that could even give the appearance of generating lust in another (I Thessalonians 5:21-22). Yes, we have to use some of our own personal judgment in our clothing selections. Still, we must avoid tight-fitting, revealing clothing that causes others to look at us in a sinful way. Where's our common sense?

Let me assure you that this problem exists, not only in Las Vegas, but also in Beavercreek, Ohio. Should we dress to please God or the world (Galatians 1:10-11)? God's people dress according to a standard that differs from the world's. Which standard will you follow?

Should we use Exodus 28:42 to bind covering our thighs all the way down to the knees?

Answer:

Exodus 28:42 is a part of the Old Testament laws for the priests. We are not under the Law of Moses, so it is not binding upon us. However, that is not why people cite this verse. The New Testament tells Christians to dress modestly (e.g. I Timothy 2:9), and we would like to define "modesty." One aspect of modesty is "shamefastness" (having a sense of shame or embarrassment). That would include not exposing our nakedness. See "What is the difference between principle and standard, and how does this apply to modesty?" In the answer, there is a discussion of why "nakedness" can be defined by examining the Old Testament.

The question of how much of the thigh needs to be covered is debated, but I prefer to stay with what God said. The exposure of the genitals, buttocks, loins, and thighs was considered nakedness; therefore, I keep those areas covered.
Author Unknown

I still remember someone telling a teenage girl that her braided hair was wrong. He cited the scripture in I Timothy 2:9. I remember going home to look at that passage to see if that is what it really says. Sure enough, here is what it says.

"Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness" (I Timothy 2:9-10).

After studying the history of braiding, I have come to understand this passage better. In ancient times, only the wealthiest braided their hair. Braids were not the pigtails seen today. The braids were often very, very extravagant and might take a whole day to complete. Of course, the treatment came with many servants waiting on her throughout the day. Its purpose was to flaunt wealth and status, much like rare and expensive jewelry.
So, the issue is not braided hair, but what it represented at the time. The problem was aligning with and adopting the world's values. The issue is modesty.

A simple definition of modesty is humility expressed through one's appearance. Immodesty is a form of pride and arrogance that is expressed through one's appearance. This means that modesty is a reflection of our hearts, something that scripture bears out:

"Your adornment must not be merely external--braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God" (I Peter 3:3-4).

Fashion designers do not value modesty or a "gentle and quiet spirit." They value just the opposite. Christians need to be acutely aware of this when they go shopping at the mall. The braided hair of ancient times has given way to other forms of pride reflected in appearance. Sometimes it is a wardrobe to display social status. Often, it is something that is too little or too tight, such as a short skirt or a buff guy who wears a shirt two sizes too small. Whatever it is, the root of immodesty comes from the heart. It is an expression of pride.

Don't misunderstand. This is not a prohibition against enhancing your appearance. The passages speak of "adorning" yourself, but in a proper and godly way. "Adornment" refers to the act of decorating, enhancing, or making something attractive. The Proverbs 31 woman wore fine clothing, Esther underwent beauty treatments, and the woman of the Song of Solomon wore jewelry.

So, what does godly adornment consist of? According to these passages, it boils down to these things.

Proper clothing. This means it reflects the grace and beauty of womanhood, or the honor and dignity of manhood.

Good works.

A humble heart. Rather than just a modesty check, do a heart check.

Ask yourself the following questions: What is my motivation for wearing this? What statement does my appearance make? Whose and what kinds of attention do I crave? Is God a part of my decision in my appearance?

In recent years, many have claimed that society dictates what is modest. Their arguments go something like this: “During the Victorian Age, it was considered immodest for a woman to reveal her ankle or wrists in the presence of a man. Moreover, in many Middle Eastern countries, women are required to wear full-length dresses, veils, and shawls that only reveal their eyes. In such countries and times, it would be wrong for Christians not to wear veils or to show their ankles.” Thus, society dictates modesty.

The folly of this argument can be shown by its conclusion. For example, if an African tribal custom dictated that women be unclothed, then the Christian woman living and working with that tribe would be compelled to be modestly naked as well.

The lesson that God sends from the fig leaves is that society does not dictate what is modest. God, since the foundation of the world, has declared what is right, not man (Isaiah 45:19; Jeremiah 10:23; Proverbs 14:12). This includes the way mankind is to dress.

In the Garden, after the sin was committed, Adam and Eve constituted the whole of society on every scale: local, regional, continental, and even worldwide. Thus, if society dictates what is modest, God should have allowed Adam and Eve to keep their aprons. However, God saw a need to change their clothes; He replaced their foliage vesture with “coats of skin” (Genesis 3:21).

Many Christians have succumbed to the notion that if the clothes cover just the right area, then everything else can be uncovered. For men, it is considered enough to have only their lower body covered. He can remove his shirt in public with little or no repercussion from society and even from many Christians. The woman is expected to cover the same area and also cover part, or all, of her upper body. What has not helped the matter is how artists of the ages past have placed the fig leaves on their images of Adam and Eve. According to most conceptions, Adam only needed one strategically placed leaf, and Eve only needed three. Contrary to these artistic impressions, Adam and Eve both covered only the area below their waists (an apron refers to clothes that hang from the waist). What is more, the text said they “sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons” (Genesis 3:7). This means a collection of leaves was sewn together as a bunch. However, many modern people only consider the artists’ renditions and conclude that since Adam and Eve only needed to cover a few small sections, then that is all they have to do as well. The leaves leave us a lesson—a few properly placed scraps of material are not enough to escape immodesty.

Adam’s and Eve’s clothes, though modest by today’s societal standards, did not cover enough to please God. After He rebuked them for their transgression, God made them both coats of skin (Genesis 3:21). This shows that they simply did not have enough covered. After God was finished, Adam had more than shorts and a bare chest, and Eve had more than a bikini. God had them wearing full coats. Placement is not the end-all of modesty; it also includes quantity—a rule God instituted and taught when He replaced the fig leaves.

Answer:

The idea of modesty is not to call attention to yourself.

"Do not let your adornment be merely outward-arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel -- rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God" (<span class="bible-link" data-passage="translation=esv16&book=1pe&chapter=3&verse=3&verse_end=4" data-reference="1 Peter 3:3–4 (ESV16)" data-read-more="https://bibles.org/bible/f421fe261da7624f-01/1PE.3?passageId=1PE.3.3-1PE.3.4" data-publisher="Crossway Bibles" data-publisher-link="https://www.crossway.org/bibles" data-copyright="Scripture quotations marked (ESV) are from The Holy Bible, English Standard Version®, copyright © 2001 by Crossway Bibles, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers.
We often consider it a woman's issue, but it is equally a problem for men. Rather than catching people's eyes because of your physique or the quality of your clothes, aim to be noticed because of your character. "So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity" (Colossians 3:12-15).

"But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak" (I Corinthians 8:9).

What a person selects to wear says a lot about how they think. See What Does Your Clothing Say? Therefore, take the person aside and gently point out that he may be more effective as a teacher if the clothing he chooses doesn't distract from his message. Even overly casual clothing can send a quiet message of "I don't care" to the person's students.
Answer:

The Oxford Dictionary defines "sexy" as "sexually attractive or exciting" when applied to others or "sexually aroused" when applied to yourself. Therefore, by definition, "sexy" is referring to sexual lust.

"Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness" (I Timothy 2:9-10).

The Greek word for "proper clothing" is kosmious, which means orderly, well-arranged, seemly, or modest. In other words, it refers to clothing that is neat and appropriate for the occasion. The Greek word translated as "modestly" is aidos, which means having a sense of shame, modesty, and reverence. This is a person who can blush when faced with things that are irreverent or immodest. The Greek word for "discretely" is sophrosuna. This person is of sound mind, has self-control and good judgment, and is moderate in all she does.

While Paul is addressing women, the concepts should also apply to men. A Christian is to be humble, so dressing to show off their wealth or to gain the admiration of others would be wrong. Nor should a person should not dress to arouse sexual desire in other people. While it is true that some will lust regardless of how a person dresses, it isn't proper for a Christian to encourage lustful thoughts in other people.
