Answer:

Life comes from God, and so it must be respected (Acts 17:25).

Advanced Medical Directives tell doctors how much effort you want them to expend in trying to sustain your life. It is not assisted suicide, which tries to end life before it would naturally come to an end. Think of Advanced Medical Directives as more of an acceptance that your life is coming to an end and that spending large amounts of money to keep you alive for a few more days is not necessary.

An Advanced Medical Directive could be wrong in asking that the basics of life, such as food and water, be withheld. However, it is not wrong to decline a medical treatment that might add a few months to your life if you think the added time is not worth the resulting pain and suffering caused by the treatment.

Hello brother!

I have a ”deformity” that causes them to look strange, and I was wondering if it would be a sin to go ahead and have it corrected. It would cause no financial issues. They would be for my husband only. My main question is, would it defy the way God made me? Would it be vanity since it’s cosmetic only and restores no function? The associated health risks also make me wonder if it would be a sin.

Answer:

The argument that "this is the way God made me" isn't adequate. People are born with problems (bowed legs, feet problems, etc.), and we think it is acceptable to have corrective surgeries. In your case, there is no problem caused by your birth defect, and you could live with it the way things are. However, if someone suffered an accident that caused a similar issue, we usually find it acceptable to put the body back to the way it was, if possible.

Yes, you are doing it because you would be more comfortable with the issue corrected. However, you have the funds to make the change. You are not neglecting others by having this procedure done. All surgeries contain risk, but so does going across town. Christianity is not about removing risks. Thus, if you and your husband want to accept the risks and think that it will make life a bit more comfortable, I don't see harm in your proposal.

Is it for everyone? No. Is it necessary? No. But I have pictures on my wall at home because I like how it looks. I won't spend money on such things if something more important needs to be done. I realize that it is optional. I suggest seeing this change in a similar light.

Where I think people go too far is when their bodies are perfectly fine, and yet they are still not satisfied.

Question:

As a patient who needs to have an appointment for a potentially serious health issue, is it acceptable according to God's Word for the patient to see a doctor who is most likely not a Christian? I would prefer that the doctor be a Christian, but in the location where we live, the non-Christian specialist is the only one who might do the procedure to the best of my knowledge. I was in the Emergency Room recently, and his name was given as the doctor to see.

My husband and I live in a rural area and had planned to travel to another doctor who might hold to the Christian faith, but I don't know what his beliefs are. However, due to family issues with traveling to a location that is farther away than the one we've chosen, we thought it might be better to be closer to home.

In addition, being closer to the church of Christ where we attend is another consideration if I had surgery. The other location would make the distance more difficult to travel for my husband and family as well as church members who might have an opportunity to visit me.

I decided to make an appointment, in part, when I heard that a church member has seen this doctor and had a good opinion of him. I think there may be other members who think highly of him also.

Another consideration is a family member who lives with us and has chronic health issues. If she's not feeling well, it would be good to be closer to home if I'm having a procedure or maybe a following surgery done.

I also have OCD-scrupulosity, so the thoughts about this are difficult for me to think in a clear way.

I appreciate your advice as you go to the Bible for answers. Thank you so much for your time and diligence in studying God's Word.

I would prefer that everyone I deal with were a Christian, but that isn't going to happen. Faithful Christians are always a minority (Matthew 7:13-14). Therefore, much of your secular dealings will be with people who are not faithful Christians. You are not promoting false teachings by using the services of a non-Christian for secular matters.

Question:

Hi brother Jeffrey,

I hope you are doing fine.

I am a member of the Lord's church and I'm in my late 40s. I am concerned about a decision I have to make regarding breast reduction surgery. Does Romans 14.23 apply to me?

"But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin" (Romans 14:23 NKJV).

I do believe there is some vanity in me that wants the surgery, but it is also because I physically need it. The vanity in me wants to be able to wear a dress and not get looks. I want to wear T-shirts that don't get dirty looks either. I want to feel good in my clothes. I want people to look me in the eyes when they talk to me -- especially men. I do not wear clothes that show but it's inevitable.

I'm tired. My back hurts and I'm starting to develop rheumatoid arthritis.

I've had comments from sisters telling me that this is the way God made me and I should accept it. That there are so many women wanting this, and I don't want it. That I just should be happy this way.

My primary care doctor believes I do qualify as a medical reason to have the reduction, which would be covered by my insurance.. Even if my insurance fights it, and I pay for it out of pocket, I think I still want to do it. But then the doubts come.

What did God say about this?

Your breast size is putting a strain on your back, so it is reasonable to relieve the discomfort. The fact that you expect to like the resulting look better is merely a bonus.

Question:

I know that assisted suicide is sinful because it is taking matters into your own hands, but when is it a sin to refuse medical treatment, or is it sinful? I'm not talking about those who refuse it because they are going to keep right on praying that God will make them better, I'm talking about those who refuse it even though they know that if they got the treatment, they could have a chance of getting better, but if they refuse it, it won't make them better. You know, like refusing chemo, dialysis, stuff like that. If medical technology gets so advanced that we could live for hundreds of years, would it be sinful to say enough is enough, refuse something, and let ourselves go to be with the Lord because that is our desire?

Answer:

First off, let's establish that there is nothing sinful about receiving medical treatment. See: Is It a Sin to Take Medicine? -- to Consult a Doctor?

But what about refusing treatment?

I know a few cases where a person dying of cancer was offered treatment, but that treatment had no hope of a cure. It might extend life a few more months, but it came at cost of pain and a severe decrease in the quality of life because of the radiation and chemotherapy. I've known several people when faced with those choices decide that they would rather enjoy the short time they have left on earth than suffer just to stay here a short while longer. It isn't so much a refusal of treatment as a refusal to take a course that doesn't actually improve life or significantly extend life.

However, to refuse a treatment that offered a hope of a cure would be a different matter. For example, contracting pneumonia and then refusing to take the antibiotics that would likely eliminate the disease is basically putting God to the test. It would be similar to walking off of a cliff and trusting that God will prevent me from being injured. But that idea was soundly renounced. "Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over you,' and, 'In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.'" Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD your God.'"" (Matthew 4:5-7). Man is not in the position to put God to the test.

When we die is in God's hands, but we still do what we can to either cure or minimize the suffering. As Jesus said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick" (Mark 2:17). When you are sick, you should seek the help of a physician. Whether you will be cured is up to God, but we still do the small things that are available to us. Just as man is expected to work for a living (II Thessalonians 3:10), but to also remember to thank God for the blessing of food on his table (Matthew 6:11), so should a man in all his life do what he is able to do and then lean on His God to make up for all his inadequacies.

There is a time to live and time to die, but there also is a time to heal (Ecclesiastes 3:2-3). God scolded the Israelites for not seeking out healing for those sick among them. "The weak you have not strengthened, nor have you healed those who were sick, nor bound up the broken, nor brought back what was driven away, nor sought what was lost; but with force and cruelty you have ruled them" (Ezekiel 34:4).

Answer:

This is not the type of touching referred to in "Now concerning the things of which you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman" (I Corinthians 7:1). The touching discussed in I Corinthians 7:1 is regarding touching for sexual arousal.

The law is equivalent to the law where a pregnant woman ends up getting injured when two men are fighting. "If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman's husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe" (Exodus 21:22-25). If no direct harm is done to the woman or child, then the man is fined. But if harm is done and the man is found guilty, then the same damage is inflicted on the man.

In the case of Deuteronomy 25:11-12, a similar thing happens, not with a child but in this case a man's ability to have children in the future. The word chazaq, translated as "grab," implies much more than a touch. It means a strong, firm hold -- in other words, she squeezes and crushes his testicles. She has done damage to the man. Normally the judgment in a fight is that the one causing damage receives the same damage in return, but that is not possible since a female doesn't have testicles. Also, a part of the damage is not definable because we are talking about the potential loss of future children. Thus, the penalty if a judge finds her guilty is the loss of a hand. Secondary facts, such as that she was defending her husband, are not to be considered in the punishment given.

Again, this law has nothing to do with someone giving medical aid that might require the touching of a male's genitals.

Breast augmentation for a woman falls under the realm of cosmetic surgery. Such surgery is most often used to correct damage from injuries or diseases. For example, burns or cancer. As a way of restoring the look or function of the body, there is nothing wrong with the practice.

Some people use it to remove the marks of aging or just to look different from the way they were born. For the most part, this later group is motivated by vanity or pride. This is contrary to the way Christians ought to be. It is being focused on this world, which is only temporary.
Answer:

"And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty, but our presentable parts have no need" (I Corinthians 12:23-24).

Those in medicine have to recognize that nakedness and the exposure of private areas are embarrassing to the person. Extra effort should be made to minimize the exposure. Prior to an examination, the patient should be told what is about to be done, why, and what they might expect. This gives them a chance to mentally prepare.

In addition, another staff member in the room should be in the room when the person examining and the person being examined are of different genders. This provides protection for the examiner that there won't be later claims of improper behavior. Plus knowing that there is an observer minimizes any temptation. The presence of an observer is required in most state regulations in the United States, and I assume it is generally true in other countries as well.
