Peter tells us that the prophetic word (our Old Testament scriptures) is now “more sure” since Jesus has fulfilled all that was predicted about the Messiah. Unbelieving Jews are made to doubt their own scriptures since they never got the Messiah their scriptures predicted (in their failure to connect the dots to Jesus).

They handle the same scriptures and fail to see Jesus as the messiah, while Christians handle the same scriptures and see Jesus everywhere prophesied, foreshadowed, and typified. We hold the Tanakh (Old Testament) as “more sure” than ever, since it clearly speaks of Jesus (II Peter 1:16-21). Each prophecy is a glimmer of light in this dark world. Peter says you would “do well to heed” these precious prophecies “as a light that shines in a dark place.”

Maybe you are in a dark place in your life. If you are wandering aimlessly in life with no real vision of your purpose and direction, you are in the dark. If you are feeling depressed and gloomy, you are emotionally in a dark place in your life. You would do well to heed the prophetic word and get a clearer perspective of Jesus.

Jesus is “the light of the world.” To know Jesus is to know light on your meaning and purpose. To heed the glimmers of light that each prophecy of the Messiah gives to your mind, your understanding, the better you can see the path you need to take in life, the better equipped you are to handle the day yoked to Christ as your familiar friend and companion of your heart. Remember that Jesus said if you yoke to Him and learn from Him, your burden will be light. The prophet's word is like stars guiding you through the dark places and bringing you to “the morning star” (Jesus), who rises within your heart and brings you out of that dark phase.

Stars carry you through dark moments, but Jesus is the true light that lights every dark soul with knowledge, truth, facts about life beyond death, hope, purpose, meaning, and direction. If you are in a dark place in life, you would do well to heed the old scriptures and let them lead you to the dawning of a much better day in union with the Light of the world.

Since ancient times, down to our day, certain religions, philosophies, and secret societies have promised enlightenment to their initiates, granting them an inside knowledge unavailable to the uninitiated. Some of these groups have even threatened with death any initiate who would dare to reveal their secrets.

In Christ, however, there are no secrets. What had been kept under wraps during Old Testament times has now been revealed through the gospel (Ephesians 3:1-10).

In Christianity, there are no esoteric symbols or covert rituals. The knowledge revealed in the New Testament is free for all to learn and live by--then share with those yet in darkness. All who humble themselves in faith, repentance, and obedience to the gospel are welcomed into the fellowship of the truly enlightened.

Light Offered to All

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).

Christ commissioned the apostle Paul to take the gospel to the Gentiles “to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me” (Acts 26:18).

“. . . the god of this world [Satan] has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God . . . . For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (II Corinthians 4:4, 6).

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (I Peter 2:9).

Enlightened indeed!

The very nature of light is to illuminate, that is, to reveal something. We use it to help us do things such as writing a letter or working in the garden. Whenever I work under the hood of my car, I use a light suspended from a cord above me to illuminate the area so I can see what I’m doing, even if sometimes I don’t know what I’m doing!

Light is something that, to most of us, should be a reassuring thing. It guides us and gives us comfort. I remember when I would get called out to work at night and return home very late. My wife would leave the porch light on for me so I could see to get my key in the door lock. As I would turn the corner onto our street, it was always a welcome sight to see the glowing porch light in the darkness. I was almost home.

In the same way, God’s word is a light that illumines the way home for us. The home we seek is the one that He has prepared for us in heaven, and His word, which is absolute truth, helps us to see the way and enables us to get there.

Light offers the illumination by which we can make our way. A flashlight in the dark woods, a headlight on a dark highway, a porch light at home, and God's word in a dark world.

"And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts" (II Peter 1:19).

by Terry Wane Benton

Jesus describes the real situation of men and men's relationship to God and truth by comparing Himself to light that has come into the world, and that men are condemned and in the dark. The condemnation of man is that man is given a wonderful chance to come out of moral filth and darkness by coming to the light (John 3:19), and instead, "men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil." Others come to the light, learn that their sins are exposed, and want to be cleansed, desiring the knowledge and light that come from God (John 3:21).

Jesus said that "everyone practicing evil hates the light" (John 3:20). This is why Jesus got such a negative response from many of the leading Jews. He said regarding people of the world that "it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil" (John 7:7). This is why they crucified Jesus. They hated Him for testifying to the truth about their real relationship to sin, and their lack of a real relationship with God. Men tend to want God to be a God who loves and accepts us just as we are, but the practicing sinner must come to God to get cleaned up, not for God to adjust to man. People will hate it if you teach that all men must repent of sins (Acts 17:30-31; Luke 13:3). People will love you if you teach that God is like them and accepts any choice of lifestyle that they want to follow. God came into the world to save man from sin and condemnation, not to leave men alone to remain in sin. In the Light of Jesus, we see our sins more clearly and seek to clean up. In the dark, we cannot see the truth, and some become accustomed to the dark and hate the light.

But when light shines in darkness, it will have one of two effects: Either those who want light will be drawn to it or those who prefer darkness will scurry away from the light. Even more, lovers of light will find other light lovers while those who prefer darkness will seek out others who love the same, and it’s easy to see why; after all, no one likes their dirty deeds exposed. They’d just as soon hide them in gloomy obscurity. But those whose deeds are illuminated have the opportunity to see them for what they are. Even better, they have the opportunity to do better, thanks to the light. Staying in the dark is easy; it takes willingness and courage to come to the Light.

One can be forgiven for being afraid of the dark; what's tragic is when people are afraid of the light.

"This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God" (John 3:19-21).

Shortly after Jesus’ birth, His parents took Him to the temple “to present Him to the Lord.” There was a righteous and devout man, Simeon, upon whom was the Holy Spirit and who was “waiting for the consolation of Israel.” The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not see death before he had seen the Messiah. When he saw Jesus, he took Him into his arms, blessed God, and said:

“Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel” (Luke 2:22-32).

This is loaded with meaning. Simeon expresses his trust in the faithfulness of God. He sees the Messiah as the salvation and consolation God’s people had been looking for. God’s plans and salvation were meant to be seen by all, “prepared in the presence of all peoples.” The power of this is seen in the next couple of phrases: “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” Jesus was the fulfillment of light and glory for both Jews and Gentiles.

Israel was called to be a light to the nations around them. Perhaps this sounds surprising given that they were to enter the land and dispossess the pagan occupants. Those nations were being judged for their own sins. However, God was still working on His plan, and Israel was a big part of it:

“I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations…” (Isaiah 42:6).

“I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth” (Isa 49:6).

These passages were in a context describing what Israel was meant to be. However, while the people often failed in this because of their sins, Isaiah’s message pointed to a greater fulfillment to be found in the Messiah, and Simeon recognized this. Jesus would be the light of revelation to the Gentiles. Jesus is the light of the world (John 8:12; 9:5; 12:35-36). “In him was life, and the life was the light of men” (John 1:4-5). Since light and life stand together, Jesus, as the light, provides life to those who trust in Him.

Jesus is also the “glory to your people Israel.” The prophetic promise was glory for Israel:

“I bring near my righteousness; it is not far off, and my salvation will not delay; I will put salvation in Zion, for Israel my glory” (Isaiah 46:13).

“In the LORD all the offspring of Israel shall be justified and shall glory” (Isaiah 45:25).

Israel, as God’s people, held a special place in the plan of God. As Paul would write even in the face of showing that both Jew and Gentile were equally guilty of sin, “Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God” (Romans 3:1-2). God entrusted Israel with a special mission, and to be a part of the fulfillment of God’s plan in Jesus was a glory to them.

Joseph and Mary marveled at what they heard on this day. Here was a prophet telling them that the promised Messiah was among them in the flesh. Salvation, comfort, and redemption came in the form of this infant to whom they were given stewardship to raise. Now, both Jews and Gentiles were provided the opportunity to take part in the completion of God’s plan in Christ. Jesus would die and be raised again, overcoming death and providing eternal redemption for all who trust Him (Hebrews 2:14).

While Jews and Gentiles come together as one body in Christ (Ephesians 2:11-18), we need to be careful not to minimize how God carried this out through Israel. Sometimes, we hear people say that God “replaced” Israel with the church, but this isn’t quite correct. “Replace” could sound like the plan failed and must be scratched. Rather, God fulfilled Israel’s purpose in Christ and grafted in the Gentiles with faithful Israel so that the Gentiles become part of this new creation (Romans 11). In other words, it’s not replacement but fulfillment. Israel did produce the light by bringing about the Messiah according to God’s purposes. As Jesus said of the Law and Prophets, “I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17). God did not destroy Israel to raise up the church; He grafted Gentiles into the olive tree of faithful Israel to make them one in Christ. The nuance is important, for it speaks to fulfilling a plan that God put into place long before Israel was even a physical nation, as seen in Abraham (Genesis 12; Romans 4). The Messiah is the glory of Israel in God’s purposes, which also means salvation to the Gentiles. Together, both Jew and Gentile become one body in Christ as a testimony to God’s faithfulness and wisdom. God is ever faithful, and Scripture gives powerful testimony to this truth.

Sentry Magazine, March 2001

Einstein said, "It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness."

With all his knowledge, he knew a simple truth that nothing can be seen when light is totally absent. Moreover, man could not exist at all except that God said, "Let there be light: and there was light." Light from the sun gives energy for life on Earth. Plants change the energy of sunlight into food energy. When light rays strike a green plant, some of their energy is changed to chemical energy, which the plant uses to make food out of air and minerals. Very nearly all living organisms on Earth depend directly or indirectly on this process of photosynthesis for their food energy. Without light, the world would not be.

"He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world" (Job 18:18).

The earth's atmosphere or the earth itself absorbs some of the sunlight's energy. Much of this is then changed to heat energy, which helps warm the Earth, keeping it in the temperature range that living things have fashioned for.

"God saw the light, that it was good" (Genesis 1:4).

Our human perception of light is limited, however. We see light in the visible range of radiation frequencies we know as colors. Our eyes cannot see some infrared rays. Instead, we feel the heat. Some radiation is completely undetectable to us without special equipment like a radio or Geiger counter. The light is there, we just can't see it.

"For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, [even] his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse" (Romans 1:20).

"When his lamp shined upon my head, and by his light I walked through darkness" (Job 29:3).

People must have sight in order to learn. When people first used fire, the light provided at night may have been just as important to them as the heat because they could see what was around them rather than living through the darkness in fear of the unknown.

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and light unto my path" (Psalms 119:105).

There's a popular song with lyrics that say, "I can see clearly now ... " The clarity of our visual perception of an object depends on the amount of light that falls on it, how well it is illuminated. Since one of the properties of light is that it disperses outward in all directions, it spreads out to cover a larger area. The farther away from the light, the less clear objects appear. In fact, the amount of light drops off dramatically (by the inverse-square law). Interestingly, our eyes can compensate for this to some extent. Walking into a dark room can blind us and yet within a minute or so, our eyes have adjusted to permit us to see even in a very poorly illuminated place.

"Behold, he spreadeth his light around him; and he covereth the bottom of the sea" (Job 36:30).

"The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but Jehovah will be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory" (Isaiah 60:19).

Sometimes what we see depends a great deal on what happens to the light when it strikes a substance. You can see a toy boat that sank to the bottom of a filled bathtub, but unless you are directly above it, you will not see its real location because the light travels at a different speed through water than it does through the air and you see a refracted image. Where light goes right through the water, it simply reflects off a mirror. It is absorbed into a dark object but the energy doesn't vanish, it just changes into a different form, that of heat.

"He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied; yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire" (Isaiah 44:16).

One of the more fascinating properties of light is known as dispersion. When this occurs, white light separates into a spectrum of colors. You might cause this to happen with a glass prism. God does it with moisture in the atmosphere.

"I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth" (Genesis 9:13).

"And I saw another strong angel coming down out of heaven, arrayed with a cloud; and the rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire" (Revelation 10:1 ASV)

Sound does not exist unless there is something (such as air or water) for it to travel through. Light, however, can travel through nothing. Stars are easily visible on clear nights, though their light must travel for years through empty space before it reaches Earth. We can experiment with light and understand much about it, but it is not easy to explain just what light is.

"He stretcheth out the north over empty space, and hangeth the earth upon nothing" (Job 26:7).

One reason for this is that light cannot be seen until it interacts with something else. A beam of light is invisible unless it strikes an eye or unless there are particles that reflect parts of the beam to an eye. Also, light travels very fast -- so fast that for centuries people argued about whether it required any time at all for light to move from one point to another. The relationship between light and time is understood only dimly by even our most brilliant minds.

"And he said unto them, It is not for you to know times or seasons, which the Father hath set within His own authority" (Acts 1:7).

Galileo stationed two men on different hilltops, each with a shaded lantern. The first man was to uncover his lantern. As soon as the second man saw the light, he was to uncover his lantern. They decided that light might travel from one place to another in no time at all. In 1676, Olaus Roemer, a Danish astronomer, timed the eclipses of Jupiter's moons and figured out that light didn't travel instantaneously, but it was not until 1849 that a Frenchman named Armand Fizeau came up with a way to measure the speed of light. He used a notched rotating disk and a mirror to see how the interrupted light traveled through the notches. He came up with a speed of 194,000 miles per second. Considering the equipment and the fact that he was measuring the speed of light in air that was very close to what is now understood to be the speed of light in a vacuum, 186,282 miles per second. But light is so much more than radiation that travels at 186,282 miles per second. Light is not only fast, it is mysterious.

"And to make all men see what is the dispensation of the mystery which for ages hath been hid in God who created all things" (Ephesians 3:9).

When I drive around the Washington, D. C. beltway at the speed limit of 55 mph, everyone else is going faster. If they are going 65, they pass me going 10 mph faster than I. That is a measure of the speed of two cars. If an astronaut is launched to travel in space and was moving away from the sun at 1,000 miles per second, we might expect him to measure the speed of light from the sun at 186,000 minus 1,000 = 185,000 miles per second. But it doesn't work that way. No matter what speed or direction we might be traveling, the speed of light appears to be the same! The speed of light in a vacuum is constant. Einstein figured out that time might change and distance might change, but the speed of light doesn't change. The speed of light is called a fundamental constant in the universe.

"For I, Jehovah, change not" (Malachi 3:6).

People are so clever. We have experimented with light and have filled books with differential equations to calculate the properties of light, but we still don't know what it is. Some believe light is a wave. Some believe it is a particle. Neither of these alone explains why light bends or can be polarized. To explain this, physicists have concluded that light is a wave and a particle.

"The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but Jehovah will be unto thee an everlasting light. and thy God thy glory" (Isaiah 60:19).

"Give glory to Jehovah your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness" (Jeremiah 13:16).

Albert Einstein's famous equation, E = MC2, says some very interesting things about light. E means Energy; M means Mass, C means the Speed of Light which is a constant measured as distance divided by time 186,000 miles per second. If l remember my algebra correctly, the equation can be written this way as well: M = E/C. That means, in simple terms, that mass (matter, the universe as we know it) exists only in the presence of light. Furthermore, light is a constant. Matter might exist or not exist and energy might exist or not exist, but the speed of light and light itself exists eternally in timelessness.

"Until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: which in its own times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; who only hath immortality, dwelling in light unapproachable; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom [be J honor and power eternal. Amen" (I Timothy 6:14-16).

When the Bible tells us God created light, it means that God created a universe in which the eternal Light that He is could be perceived in a new way. Through Christ, He made it possible for men to perceive that which always is because God is Light and He is eternal.

This all can be summarized with some quotes from a spiritually-minded physicist named Peter Russell,

"Both relativity and quantum physics, the two great paradigm shifts of modern physics, started from anomalies in the behavior of light, and both led to radical new understandings of the nature of light. For example, in relativity theory, at the speed of light time comes to a stop -- in effect, that means for light there is no time whatsoever. Furthermore, a photon can traverse the entire universe without using up any energy -- in effect, that means for light there is no space. ... Light, therefore, seems to occupy a very special place in the cosmic scheme; it is in some ways more fundamental than time, space, or matter. Although all we ever see is light, paradoxically, we never know light directly."

"No man hath seen God at any time: the only begotten Son. who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared [him]" (Joh 1: 18).

Physics, like Genesis, suggests that in the beginning there was light, or, rather, in the beginning, there is light, for light underlies every process in the present moment. Any exchange of energy between any two atoms in the universe involves the exchange of photons. Every interaction in the material world is mediated by light. In this way, light penetrates and interconnects the entire cosmos.

"But will God in very deed dwell on the earth? behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded!" (I Kings 8:27).

An oft-quoted phrase comes to mind: God is Light. God is said to be absolute -- and in physics, so is light. God lies beyond the manifest world of matter, shape, and form, beyond both space and time-so does light. God cannot be known directly - nor can light.

"Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? It is high as heaven; what canst thou do? Deeper than Sheol; What canst thou know? The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea" (Job 11:7-9).

The more I read about this inner light, the more I saw close parallels with the light of physics. Physical light has no mass, and is not part of the material world ... Light seems in some way fundamental to the universe, its values are absolute, universal constants.

"Again, a new commandment write I unto you, which thing is true in him and in you; because the darkness is passing away, and the true light already shineth" (I John 2:8).

"And this is the message which we have heard from him and announce unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all" (I John 1:5).

Answer:

Light is a characteristic generally associated with God. For example, Jesus, when transformed, was described as "His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light" (Matthew 17:2). This is because light represents righteousness and darkness sin. "God is light and in Him is no darkness at all" (I John 1:5). Moses, after being in the presence of God, had a face that glowed for many days thereafter. "Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the Testimony were in Moses' hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him. So when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him" (Exodus 34:29-30). Did God have the same effect on Adam and Eve as they walked in the Garden together? The Bible doesn't say. It would be pure speculation on any man's part to say one way or another.

Precognition is a fancy word for knowing the future. While mankind, through reasoning, can make educated guesses about the future, we have ample evidence that mankind is unable to do so with any accuracy. If nothing else can prove this point, take a look at our weather reports. Since we all descend from Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:20), we share common characteristics with them and all mankind. Jeremiah tells us, "It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps" (Jeremiah 10:23). Since we cannot tell what the future holds, we are unable to determine the direction we ought to take. Foreknowledge is a characteristic of Deity. This was one of the proofs God offered of His uniqueness. "Remember this, and show yourselves men; Recall to mind, O you transgressors. Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, 'My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure'" (Isaiah 46:8-10). Only God can accurately tell the future in advance. Man and the figments of man's imagination (idols) are unable to accomplish this feat. Since this characteristic is not in mankind, we would not expect to find it in Adam and Eve.

The Bible gives no evidence that Adam and Eve knew the future in advance, beyond what was revealed to them by God. Actually, we could argue that quite the opposite was the case. One would hope that if Eve really knew the consequences of her sin that she would not have listened to the voice of Satan. Even though she knew in advance that eating the fruit would bring death into the world (Genesis 3:3), she accepted Satan's lie that she would not really die (Genesis 3:4) and ate of the fruit anyway. The end result was, "In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return" (Genesis 3:19).
