Text: Romans 3

Was there an advantage to being a Jew versus being a Gentile? The question here concerns the Old Testament period, and the answer is yes. The Gentile world did not have the revelation of God in a written, codified form. That meant that the Gentile world, as we read in Romans 1, had to rely on its own efforts to figure things out. As Dr. Phil would often ask: “How’s that working for you?” Answer: not very well. For the simple matter that God’s thoughts are not man’s thoughts. What man thinks falls short of and is different from the mind of God.

The Jewish revelation was God telling them what He specifically wanted. So, the biggest advantage is simply that they (as a people, a collectivity) were entrusted with the oracles of God.

But, with greater privilege and advantage comes greater responsibility! This is where the Jews failed. The rest of Romans 3 will show how many ways they failed to live up to this revealed knowledge. The conclusion then becomes “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

Thus, the need for Jesus and the Gospel message that explains how we can find forgiveness through Jesus.

We have been blessed with the gospel! With that comes the responsibility and obligation to know its message and conform our thinking to its teaching. As it was stated in the Great Commission: ‘teach them to observe all that I commanded you…’ (Matthew 28:20).

As we follow Jesus, there remains the openness of forgiveness as John wrote: “But if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (I John 1:7-9).

Such walking in the light is not being perfect, but it does involve recognizing when we sin and repenting and confessing such to God. In this, we find forgiveness.

Are you walking in the light?

Sentry Magazine, December 2002

Throughout history, God has used natural events, nations, cultures, individuals, and even beasts to facilitate and accomplish the fulfillment of His will. Evidence is strongly indicative that God used some of these same components in preparation for the corning Messiah and the carrying of His message into all the world. Certainly, John the Baptizer functioned in this way: "Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You. The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the LORD, Make His paths straight."1 But even more precursory were the various cultural contributions from the Romans, the Greeks, and the Jews.

The apostle Paul stated that "when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son"2 Mark's gospel also quotes Jesus saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand"3 These passages cause one to conclude that the timing of Christ's birth was not a random thing. God "sent forth His Son" when the world was ripest for Him.

Romans

The Romans contributed politically to this ripeness in five major ways:

Unity

Two elements fostered a sense of unity among those who were under the yoke of the Romans: A common law and citizenship.

The lex XII tabularum

The lex XII tabularum, or Twelve Tables, were the basis of the Roman legal system. These laws had been crystallized and codified in the middle 5th century B.C., but as the Romans conquered other nations the Twelve Tables were ameliorated by the laws of the other nations. The educational system of the Romans included the Twelve Tables as part of the academic training for all Roman boys. All people in the Roman Empire were accountable to this same law -- thus setting the stage for the accountability of all men to the law of Christ.4

Roman Citizenship

A sense of unity was also enhanced by Roman citizenship. Citizenship certainly had its advantages. Simply put, non-citizens had few rights, whereas Roman citizens had many privileges and rights as well as duties. With just a cursory reading of Acts 16:35-40 and 22:25-29, one can readily see the advantages of Roman citizenship. As time passed, citizenship was made available to more and more people, finally culminating in universal citizenship for all freemen in 212 A.D.The fact that the then known world was under one law, and that citizenship in this kingdom was desired by all and was continually made more available, created a sense of unity that aided the acceptance of the gospel as a system in which there was "neither Jew nor Greek, ... slave nor free, ... male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus."5

The pax romano

The pax romano, or the Roman Peace: Much criminal activity had been checked by the Roman military. The peace that followed contributed greatly to the freedom of movement enjoyed by Christ and particularly Paul in his efforts to spread the gospel.

An Excellent Road System

Once the early church began to see its mission to gentiles, instead of to the Jew only, the spreading of the gospel was facilitated by the exceptional network of roads the Romans had developed throughout their empire. Paul's travels in Acts verify this.

The Roman Army

Contributions by the Roman Army are not legion nor provable, though we know of a few instances in Scripture where military men obeyed the gospel (e.g. Cornelius, the jailor at Phillipi, et al). No doubt, these individuals and others carried the gospel wherever they went. The acceptance of the faith by these men would have given some credibility to Christianity among soldiers, making it less an enemy than it otherwise would have been. It is also suggested that the probability exists that Christians in the Roman military introduced the gospel in Britain.6

The Religious Element

The Scriptures record numerous examples of conquered peoples turning away from their gods because their gods were unable to protect them from the conquering nation. The subdued people would then serve the gods of their captors. This effect was brought upon those conquered by Rome; however, the Roman gods (Greek gods with new names) were unable to offer anything better than the impotent gods before them. Thus these people "were left with a spiritual vacuum that could not be filled satisfactorily by the religions of the day."7 This, no doubt, contributed to a readier reception of the gospel. There were, however, "various mystery religions (that) seemed to offer more than this in the way of spiritual and emotional aid."8 Yet, time revealed that they were merely empty rituals through which neither forgiveness nor hope could be found.

Greeks

The Greeks contributed intellectually to this ripeness in three major ways:

A Universal Language

With the conquest of Alexander the Great (322 B.C.), came a new culture (Hellenism), and a new language (Greek). The Attic Greek spoken by Alexander was a difficult language, and with the passing of time the language (as languages always do) began to change; consequently, the Attic Greek gave way, at least to the common man, to what became Koine Greek, or common Greek. The Septuagint, ca. 285 B.C., was written in Greek, thus setting the stage for the acceptance of the Greek language among the Jews. "The actual speech of the LXX varies widely from book to book, however, the underlying literary vehicle is koine."9

The New Testament was also written in this language. The Koine Greek was the perfect language for clarity and precision in discussing the topics found in the New Testament. "It frequently has been said that the precision and depth of meaning available to the Greek language rendered it the perfect vehicle for the thought of Plato and Aristotle. In the same manner, the directness and precision of koine made it the ideal vehicle for the 'Word of God.'"10 Surely God's hand was in the forces that brought about the Koine Greek and its universal usage throughout the world during the time of Christ and the New Testament.

Greek Philosophy

The rational thinking of Socrates and Plato did much to undermine and destroy the bankrupt philosophies of the pre-existing religions. As time transpired and the Hellenistic influence expanded, Greek philosophy, though itself inadequate to fulfill man's spiritual needs, showed the foolishness and emptiness of the polytheistic religions of Greece and Rome.

Though Socrates and Plato stressed a larger dimension than "this world," the mere intellectual pursuit of finding fulfillment produced vacuity. And though some Greek literature taught of right and wrong, the way to correct it or even the need to correct it were not addressed because the infractions were never seen as "more than a mechanical and contractual matter. (Not) ... as a personal failure that affronted God and injured others."11

The Religious Element

With somewhat of an overlap with the preceding element, the philosophers of Epicurean and Stoic persuasion presented a different viewpoint of man. Though Stoicism stressed a system of ethics, and Epicureanism "advocated a fairly pure morality",12 man was still pretty much left on his own to "work out his own obedience to the natural Jaws."13

Both of these were materialistic religions: Epicureanism taught, "The human soul is made of particularly small, mobile atomic bodies; there is nothing incorporeal or immortal about it;"14 and Stoicism taught, "The human soul is simple and solely rational.15 Thus their negative response to Paul's preaching on the resurrection in Acts 17:30-32.

With the polytheistic religions discredited, philosophy itself found hollow, and the materialistic religions of Epicureanism and Stoicism offering nothing better than a "do-it-yourself' ethic with no hope beyond the grave, the gospel of Christ-with its emphasis upon the spiritual, a relationship with God, forgiveness, freedom from guilt, and hope of eternal life-was found more appealing and was no doubt given more serious attention than it would have been given centuries earlier.

Jews

At the synagogue on the Sabbath (Mark 1:21)

The Jews contributed religiously to this ripeness in six major ways:

Monotheism

After centuries of punishment and finally the captivity in Babylon, the Israelite nation finally learned its lesson concerning other "gods". They became servants of only the one true God Yahweh (Jehovah). Of course, Jesus being the true Son of God, He taught that there was only One Deity the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit -- who are One.16 This truth was well established among Jews. Never did the apostles have to deal with Polytheism when they preached to a Jewish assembly. Yet numerous examples can be cited to verify the necessity of this topic among Gentile audiences.17

Messianic Hope

Though there were obviously many incorrect ideas about the Messiah and His kingdom, the hope of His coming was certainly present among Jews and also among Samaritans. Most preaching to Jews began by proving Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah (Gr. "Christ"; lit. "anointed one").18

Ethical System

After nearly 1,500 years of living under the paidagogos ("tutor, schoolmaster' i.e., the Old Law), the Jews clearly understood right and wrong. Though the Pharisees had done much to take the heart out of the Mosaic Law, the Decalogue and its many attendant teachings set forth "the purest ethical system in existence."19 It is interesting to note that the epistles which deal with Jews, are concerned more with pride and its elements, whereas the letters with Gentile recipients contain so many rebukes and exhortations concerning ungodly behavior.20 The Jewish religion clearly laid a solid foundation for the gospel in teaching that "Salvation came from God and was not to be found in rationalistic systems of ethics or subjective mystery religions."21

Old Testament Scriptures

That the Old Testament finds its fulfillment in the New Testament is clearly seen in the books of Matthew, Romans, Hebrews, and others. The books of Romans and Hebrews consist of nearly one-third Old Testament quotations. Not only is it impossible to understand these letters without a good knowledge of the Old Testament, but it is clear that the New Testament is the spiritual fulfillment of the physical elements in the Old Testament.22 Thus the Old Testament was the canvas upon which the New Testament was painted.

Philosophy of History

The Jews did not share the pessimistic view of history as being merely a series of redundant, repetitive, and meaningless cycles.23 Nor did they see, as the optimistic historians, man at the hub of the wheel with his aim being merely to continue evolving to higher technological and intellectual levels.24 The Jews saw Jehovah as being in control of history, and that, consequently, there was meaning and purpose in history. This ideology set the stage for a key issue of the gospel. One day Christ will return and all wrongs will be made right, and all men will answer for their actions.25

The Synagogue

Synagogue worship is thought to have begun during Babylonian captivity when the Jews had no access to the temple. For seventy years they met, recited and read Scripture, and sang songs in worship to God. When they returned from captivity, and as they dispersed throughout the world, the synagogue became a standard fixture wherever there were enough Jews to have one.26 The significance of the Jewish synagogue as it relates to the preparatory element of Christianity is that:

It was the synagogue that fostered and nurtured the five previous points we have just discussed the teaching of the One God, the coming of the Messiah, the high standard of morality and ethics, and the Jewish philosophy of history were all taught in the synagogues as they read and studied the Old Testament Scriptures continually; and

The synagogue served as an open forum for teaching the gospel. Christ made use of the synagogues, and Paul took advantage of the "open doors" of the synagogues everywhere he traveled.27

In view of all these factors, one must freely acknowledge that Judaism was "the stalk on which the rose of Christianity was to bloom."28

Conclusion

Just as God, in the days of Daniel, foresaw the establishment of Christ's kingdom during the days of the Roman empire, 29 He also had the power and wisdom to bring about the fulfillment of these events in such a way that one could hardly doubt the presence of His hand in them. "In the period of Christianity's birth and during the first three centuries of its existence, conditions were more favorable for its spread throughout the Mediterranean world than at any other time in the ancient or medieval eras."30

Question:

I have read what was written on the website about why the Jews rejected God, but I remain confused as to why this occurred. Are you able to make it clearer? Using passages from the Bible does not explain this, at least I have not read it. What I have gathered, by reading, is that they didn't agree with what was being preached, as it didn't conform to their ideals.

This is a subject that has intrigued me for many years. Is it possible that the Jews got what was coming to them throughout history because of this failure? I am no academic, but it seems that many such people can argue and debate these questions for hours, and still be no wiser. A little enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:

You almost answered your own question. All you are lacking is quoting of Scripture and maybe one or two points.

Stiff-necked Rebellious People

Israel is known for their rebellion towards God, " "You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did. Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become; you who received the law as ordained by angels, and yet did not keep it." Now when they heard this, they were cut to the quick, and they began gnashing their teeth at him" (Acts 7:51-54). The response of the Jews at the rebuke given by Stephen is that they again did just as their fathers did, and they in turn stoned Stephen, a prophet of God.

The legacy of Israel since coming out of Egypt was the same as it was in Stephen's day. They have always been stiff-necked people from the start of the Exodus (Deuteronomy 9:6-24). You are correct in that they wanted God to be a god in their own image. The Hebrews had brought false gods with them and even made a golden calf to represent the true God (Acts 7:41-43; Amos 5:25-26). Consider that the Pharisees scoffed at Jesus' teaching of serving God and not wealth (Luke 16:13-15). What they showed was that they loved the idea of being God's people, but only when it was convenient. They did not want to commit to the way of righteousness. Their love and zeal were only for their own desires and traditional ways (Matthew 15:1-9; Romans 10:2-3).

God sent Warnings and Prophets

Many verses talk about Jews and all the chances they were given. Here are just a few,

"Yet He sent prophets to them, to bring them back to the LORD; though they testified against them, they would not listen" (II Chronicles 24:19).

"Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have sent you all My servants the prophets, daily rising early and sending them. Yet they did not listen to Me or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck; they did more evil than their fathers" (Jeremiah 7:25-26).

"Because they have not listened to My words,' declares the LORD, 'which I sent to them again and again by My servants the prophets; but you did not listen,' declares the LORD" (Jeremiah 29:19).

"Also I have sent to you all My servants the prophets, sending them again and again, saying: 'Turn now every man from his evil way and amend your deeds, and do not go after other gods to worship them. Then you will dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your forefathers; but you have not inclined your ear or listened to Me" (Jeremiah 35:15).

"But they became disobedient and rebelled against You, And cast Your law behind their backs And killed Your prophets who had admonished them So that they might return to You, And they committed great blasphemies" (Nehemiah 9:26).

Consider that you warn someone thousands of times (which God did do), you tried every possible mode of correct discipline and are consistent with punishment and warnings, "You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me" (Exodus 20:5), yet over a thousand or more years they still are rebellious and will not turn to God (Matthew 23:34-39). That is the Jews in a nutshell: a people who could not in the end learn from their own mistakes.

God uses Israel's rejection for His salvation of mankind

"I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they? May it never be! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make them jealous" (Romans 11:11). The purpose of the Jews rejecting God is because He used the stubbornness of the Jews in their own free will to have salvation brought by the crucifixion of Christ.

"Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know -- this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. "But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power. ... "Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ -- this Jesus whom you crucified." Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" (Acts 2:22-24, 36-37).

"So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: "Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, "who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: 'Why did the nations rage, And the people plot vain things? The kings of the earth took their stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against the LORD and against His Christ.' "For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together "to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done" (Acts 4:24-28).

Even though Jew and Gentile intended harm toward God, He turned it around and used the death of Jesus for all of mankind for good. God had foretold of this plan and how it would happen many years before,

"The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus, the one whom you delivered and disowned in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him. "But you disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, but put to death the Prince of life, the one whom God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are witnesses. And on the basis of faith in His name, it is the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all. And now, brethren, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your rulers did also. "But the things which God announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you, whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time. Moses said, 'The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren; to Him you shall give heed to everything He says to you. And it will be that every soul that does not heed that prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.' And likewise, all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and his successors onward, also announced these days. It is you who are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, 'and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.' For you first, God raised up His Servant and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways" (Acts 3:13-26).

Consider Joseph's statement about the evil his brothers caused him; yet, God's hand is seen in guiding Joseph and saving people through his brothers' sin (Genesis 45:4-9; 50:15-20).

What was the purpose of the Jews to reject God? It was to bring about salvation to the world, but God still showed them lovingkindness regardless of their sins. Knowing they were evil and not willing to follow Him, God used what they meant for evil and turned it around for His good pleasure. Even with them crucifying the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ, they still are told they have a chance to repent, "For you first, God raised up His Servant and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways" (Acts 3:26).

In Christianity, physical lineage makes no difference. "For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him" (Romans 10:12).

Messianic Judaism is a false religion, being a revival of the Judaizing teachers who plagued the early church. See Messianic Jews.

I was wondering why the Jews think Satan isn't evil and of God to test people. They think that hell isn't eternal. And that the Messiah will be a normal man, not the Son of God, who will rebuild the church in Israel and bring people back to Judaism. If the New Testament doesn't contradict the old, why do they think this?

Do you think that people like David and Moses would have believed Jesus? Are the Jews who lived before Jesus and everyone else going to hell?

I can't think that God would do that to people, but people like the American Indians couldn't have been saved until at least the 15th century because they had no way of knowing what the Bible said. If someone thought something wrong about God all their life, and they died trusting in something that's not in the Bible, do they go to hell?

I don't know what to make of any of this. Does the Bible have anything to say about it?

Answer:

We understand that just because someone calls himself a Christian, it doesn't mean he is following the teachings of the New Testament or that he even understands the New Testament. A person's misunderstanding of God's teaching doesn't mean the correct teaching can't be found in the Bible.

The same goes for today's Jews. There are actually three main branches of Judaism today. Their beliefs vary, but what they choose to believe doesn't necessarily tell us what the Old Testament actually taught.

The Old Testament did talk about Satan. If nothing else, the first two chapters of Job make it clear that Satan exists and tries to bring down God's people. The New Testament makes the role of Satan clearer, but we expect that.

The same thing is true about Hell. Both the topic of Satan and Hell are dealing with the spiritual realm, a realm no man has direct experience with until after they leave this earth. This wasn't so with Jesus. "Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and where I am going" " (John 8:14). Jesus came from heaven. He lives eternally as God and was involved in the creation of the world. "For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him" (Colossians 1:16). Thus, when Jesus came He was able to teach his disciples and us things that we only had hints about previously.

The Jews of Jesus' day and since then absolutely refused to believe that Jesus is the Son of God. For some reasons, see: Why didn't the Jews believe Jesus? Would David and Moses believed Jesus? Clearly, the answer would be "yes" because they did believe God and were obedient. Regarding the salvation of those who lived before Christ, see Why did God choose the Israelites as His people?

The question of what happens to those who never learn the truth is usually phrased to gloss over a very basic fact: on our own, none of us could be saved or deserved to be saved. Salvation is a gift, not a right. See The Lost Who Never Heard the Gospel for details. Another point is that it is commonly assumed that the gospel did not make it to the New World but that assumption is made on a lack of evidence and not any proof.

There is only one covenant in effect today. "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). Everyone is judged according to Jesus' teachings. "He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him -- the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day" (John 12:48).

Jews who lived under the Old Law, before Christ came and died for mankind, will be judged by that law. A Gentile living before Christ's death will be judged what he ought to have been able to understand. "For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law" (Romans 2:12).

Answer:

I'm having trouble with your question because I think there are some problems with definitions.

Hebrew

This was the term to refer to the descendants of Eber. Abraham is the first recorded as being called a Hebrew (Genesis 14:13). All his descendants are also technically Hebrews, though the name typically is reserved for those who are Israelites. Hebrew is also the name of the language spoken by the descendants of Abraham.

Israel

Israel was the name God gave to Jacob when he wrestled with an angel to get a blessing (Genesis 32:28). The name means "Wrestles with God."

Jacob's descendants also called themselves the children of Israel (Exodus 1:7) or just plain Israel (Exodus 4:22). When the children of Israel conquered the land of Canaan, that land was renamed Israel, though this is not common usage. Typically you see "the territory of Israel" or "the land of Israel." After King Solomon, a civil war divided the nation of Israel into two kingdoms. The northern section, containing most of the tribes, continued to be called Israel, though sometimes it was called Ephraim because its capital was in that tribe's territory. The southern section was called Judah because it was mostly composed of that tribe.

Jews

The northern kingdom was eventually destroyed by Assyria, leaving only Judah. It too was conquered, though by the Babylonians, and sometime after their return from captivity, people began calling them Jews, which is a short form of Judah.

Canaan

These are the descendants of Canaan, the son of Ham. It is actually a collection of independent tribes or city-states. The land of Canaan was the territory these city-states occupied. It was renamed Israel after the Canaanites were conquered by Israel. Since God had promised this land to Abraham, it was also known as the promised land.
