Question:

Good day,

I received the following letter:

You're wrong, brother. The word was changed from "hell" to "Hades" as a way for the church to support purgatory, which is not true. There is no purgatory for sanctification, as sanctification is done here on Earth through the Holy Spirit who dwells within true believers. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Therefore, all who are truly saved go straight to paradise, and all who do not abide in Christ go to hell to await Judgement Day, where hell and death will be cast into the lake of fire, which is the second death. Therefore, there is no eternal life separate from God, but rather those who are not abiding in Christ will be destroyed on the second death forever.

Jesus said, 'I came to set man free from eternal death,' and that's the truth to answer any opinions elsewhere. The KJV is the right English translation from Hebrew and Greek scriptures and manuscripts. Be blessed, brother.

The argument between us stems from Revelation 20:14-15. This man believes that hell will be cast into the lake of fire, not hades. He also believes hell will end there. I gave him clear scriptures like Jude 1:7; Mathew 25:46, and Mark 9:43 that hell is forever, but he refuses to listen. How do I explain "absent from the body and present with God" to him?

Answer:

Please understand that you can present the perfect answer to someone's arguments, and he will still refuse to accept the arguments.

"Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire" (Revelation 20:14-15).

"Hades" is a transliteration of the Greek word hades. Therefore, hasn't been changed. It accurately reflects the content of the Greek text of the New Testament. The King James translators chose to render Hades as "hell." It also translates Gehenna and Tartarus as "hell." Thus, the choice of the translators obscured the actual wording, reflecting a confused belief that all three words refer to the same thing. The person you are writing to can't imagine that there are errors in the King James Version and assumes that everyone else must have gotten the wording wrong.

Transliterating the word "Hades" does not support the Roman Catholic Church's doctrine of purgatory.

Matthew 25:46 disproves his belief that those in Hell are destroyed. "These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." There cannot be an eternal punishment if the wicked no longer exist. I would challenge this person to cite Scripture that proves the wicked cease to exist.

His quote, "I came to set man free from eternal death," does not exist in the Bible. Ironically, the person who is upset about a word choice in one passage can't accurately quote the Bible.

Regarding the remainder of your questions, see "Where does the idea come from that at death your spirit goes to heaven to be with Jesus?"

by Royce Frederick

What happens when a person dies? On day six of creation, “the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7). Death occurs when the “soul” or the “spirit” of a person leaves his body. “Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it” (Ecclesiastes 12:7). When Rachel was dying, the Bible says, “her soul was departing” (Genesis 35:18). James tells us very simply that “the body without the spirit is dead” (James 2:26).

After death, every soul goes to the waiting place called “Hades.” It has two parts:

a place of comfort for those who are saved, and

a place of suffering for those who are lost.

The souls of righteous people go to the comfortable waiting place in Hades. Jesus told about a beggar named Lazarus who died “and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom” (Luke 16:22). He went to a place where he would enjoy close companionship with Abraham. Also, Luke 23:39-43 tells us about two thieves who were crucified with Jesus. After one of them repented, Jesus told him, “today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43; see Acts 2:27, 31). The word “paradise” means “royal park” or “garden.” These verses show that the souls of righteous people go to a pleasant waiting place at death.

The souls of sinful people go to a miserable waiting place in Hades. In the account about Lazarus, Jesus said, “The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom” (Luke 16:22-23). The rich man later said, “I am tormented in this flame” (Luke 16:24). The rich man could not go from his place of misery to be with Abraham (Luke 16:26). Also, he was not permitted to send a message to his five brothers who were still alive on the earth (Luke 16:27-31).

All people will be raised from death and will stand before Christ to be judged. He said, “the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice [the voice of Christ] and come forth; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation” (John 5:28-29). God has “appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness” (Acts 17:31). On that day, every person from every nation will stand before Christ to be judged (Acts 17:31; Matthew 25:31-33; Revelation 20:11-15). “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (II Corinthians 5:10).

When Christ judges everyone, He will say to the saved people, “Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 25:34). On that day, all citizens of the kingdom will enter the eternal place of the kingdom (Colossians 1:13; Philippians 3:20; Acts 14:21-22; II Peter 1:10-11; I Corinthians 15:24; Revelation 21:1-4). To the wicked, He will say, “Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41). They “will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life” (Matthew 25:46). Speaking about that future time, John wrote, “Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:14-15).

If we obey the Gospel and remain faithful, we don’t need to worry about death and eternity. By God’s grace, the blood of Jesus removes our sins when we are baptized, and His blood keeps on cleansing us as we walk with Him (Acts 2:38; 22:16; Romans 6:3-4, 23; 8:1; Ephesians 1:7; 2:8-9; Hebrews 3:12-14; I John 1:7). “And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming” (I John 2:28).

For all saved people, Judgment Day will be a time of rejoicing! Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:1-3)!

Answer:

The term Hades is a general reference to "the realm of the dead". By itself, it means nothing about what happens there. Based on the description given by Jesus in Luke 16:19-3, it makes sense to say that Hades has two zones, a place of torment and the "bosom of Abraham." I believe that the bosom of Abraham is another way of saying the "paradise" that Jesus mentioned to the thief on the cross in Luke 23:43.

For the torment part, this is not the same as the final hell which is also called the lake that burns with fire in Revelation 20:13-15, "And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire." Since Hades will be thrown into the lake, it would not make sense to believe that Hell and Hades are the same place.

In the story that Jesus relates in Luke 16, the rich man had relatives still living, so he could not have been speaking of a time after the end of the world. The rich man also asked for Lazarus to do things, so I would assume that means that Lazarus was also conscious. There are other passages that would suggest that the dead wait in a sleeping state like I Corinthians 15:51. I personally think that Corinthians could be using some poetic license, so I favor thinking of what Jesus said in Luke to be an easier description to understand.

Some people would like Luke 16 to just be a made-up story so that Jesus can express a point. However, if this was a made-up story, then this is the only story Jesus made up, and he told it as if it were true. Essentially, those people are hoping that this is made up because they do not want there to be any realm of torment after death. That is very unlikely. Jesus did not have to tell a lie to teach people the truth. He is the truth.

Since Luke 16 is true, then people are judged when they die and not when the books are opened at the final judgment as described above in Revelation 20. Actually, there is no problem whatsoever with Revelation 20 mixing with Luke 16. Even in our court systems on earth, there are three parts to a judgment. There is the judgment when the defendant is found guilty; the second judgment when the sentence is pronounced; and the third judgment when the sentence is executed. So, in the case of a heinous crime, the prisoner may be found guilty one month and it may be several months later before he finds out how long he will spend in prison or if he possibly gets the death penalty. However, he starts spending time in prison long before he finds out how long he will have to be there. For something like the death penalty, he then sits for a long time (at least here in the U.S.) before all the appeals run out and the execution is carried out. This all matches what is in Luke 16 and Revelation 20. At death, the soul goes to where it belongs. Revelation 20 says that what occurs on the last day is that the books are opened and man is judged based on what was written. If his name was written in the book of life, then the judgment on the guilt or innocence of a person has already been made and recorded. The only thing that is new here is that it will be revealed and the final punishment imposed. Righteous people go to a place of rest described variously as Abraham's bosom and paradise. The unrighteous go to torment. It is not a pretty picture. As Hebrews 10:31 says, "It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."

One thing you need to remember is that what happens to a person is based solely on what that person has done. Whether your relatives go to heaven or hell has no impact on where you go. The only thing that matters is how you lived your life in accordance with God's teachings. "The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself" (Ezekiel 18:20). Ideally, we all live righteously so that we might all live in eternal joy with each other.

Answer:

"And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation" (Hebrews 9:26-27).

"And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who "will render to each one according to his deeds": eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness--indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek" (Romans 2:3-10).

"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad" (II Corinthians 5:10).

It is apparent from the verses quoted above that every person, good or bad, believer or non-believer will appear before God to be judged according to the things he has done while living on this earth. The judgment takes place after death, but it also refers to it as the day of judgment. It is a single event, and not an ongoing process.

"We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other, so that we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you endure, which is manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer; since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed" (II Thessalonians 1:3-10).

Paul's statement to the Thessalonians establishes that the Day of Judgment comes after Christ's second coming. At that time the faithful will be rewarded and the wicked will be punished.

The only direct indication of what happens to man between his death and the Judgment Day is given in Luke 16:19-31:

"There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. Then he cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.' Then he said, 'I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.' Abraham said to him, 'They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' But he said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.'"

This tells us that there is a place of waiting. In the Old Testament, it is called Sheol or the grave. In the New Testament, it is called Hades. The waiting place is divided into two sections one called torments, here in this passage, and the other is called paradise (Luke 23:43). These places are not the final stop for man, but serve as the place of waiting. Jesus now holds the keys to death and Hades (Revelation 1:18). When he returns, he will open up the grave. "Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth -- those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation" (John 5:28-29).

The story in Luke also tells us that waiting place is not on earth because Abraham and the rich man discussed whether Lazarus could return to warn the rich man's family. Hence, the waiting place is in a different place than here on earth.

Answer:

The Bible teaches us that human beings are made in three parts. "Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ" (I Thessalonians 5:23). Your body is that part of you which is tangible, that is your physical body. Your spirit is that part of you which is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27). The soul is your life, the part that makes you a living being (Genesis 2:7).

Death, then, is when your soul -- your life -- separates from your physical body. Without life, the body undergoes decay and returns to the dust of the earth. The spirit, however, returns to God. In Ecclesiastes, Solomon portrays the body as a container (tent, bowl, or pitcher) that holds the spirit. "Remember your Creator before the silver cord is loosed, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher shattered at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the well. Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it" (Ecclesiastes 12:6-7).

From the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, we conclude that there is a place of waiting that is composed of two parts. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.' Then he said, 'I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.' Abraham said to him, 'They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' But he said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead'" (Luke 16:19-31). The two parts are separated such that there is no movement between the parts. One side is referred to as Torments and is described as a place of suffering. The other is referred to as Abraham's bosom and is a place of comfort. Jesus referred to the good side as "paradise" when talking to the thief on the cross (Luke 23:43).

Neither place is the final abode as the Bible speaks of a final judgment before God. "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad" (II Corinthians 5:10). Or as Jesus described it, "Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth--those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation" (John 5:28-29). After this judgment, the souls are sent to their eternal destiny. "And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life" (Matthew 25:46).

One popular concept you will not find in the Bible is that of purgatory: a place where people can atone for their "minor" sins by paying for it with sufferings for a season. While the wicked do suffer while waiting for judgment, you must remember that Abraham said that there is no crossing between the realms in the grave. Also, recall that Paul had said we will be judged by the deeds done in the body. Once you are dead, your fate is sealed. Your destiny depends on your behavior while you live.
