question our understanding of the Scriptures.

“Our great stress has been on the need for authority for all that we do in
worship assemblies. We have emphasized the ritualistic aspect of worship.
But where is our authority for segmenting worship from our daily and
constant offering of self in whole-life worship? Where do the scriptures
say that our assemblies for edification are to be changed into "worship
services" with a different set of rules to govern them? Where do we read
such expressions as "go to worship" (regarding Christian assemblies),
"begin our worship service," "after the worship is over," and "missing
worship"? Where do we read of the "five acts of worship" or a list of
specified activities for our assemblies? Where do we find a limitation of
the means whereby we may praise God and edify one another, either in or
out of assemblies? Has our privilege of praise been granted in only a few
activities? Is it a privilege of praise or a fulfillment of the demands of law
to praise? Do we worship only in rituals? Are assemblies for the purpose
of performance of rituals? Seeking answers to these questions led me to
many exciting new (for me) insights.”

                        4. For this lesson, I’m not so interested in the topic of the questions, but the
way the questions are expressed.

                        5. The writings of this man and others are full of series of questions such as
the one you are looking at.

create an environment of doubt that would leave the reader more
willing to accept the false teachings

to learn an answer and we can prove this to ourselves from the Scriptures.

“While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage” (II Peter 2:19).

My first encounter with the doctrine promoted by Freedom’s Ring was when the congregation where my wife and I met got pulled into apostasy by well-intentioned members. One started receiving a series of magazines written by Charles A. Holt, called The Examiner. Though I was no longer a member of that congregation, I was given copies of this publication. At first glance, it sounded interesting, but the more I dug into the teachings, the more I realized how subtly twisted was its teachings. Unfortunately, these teachings spread like a wildfire in that small congregation and it resulted in a split.

My second encounter came while preaching in Nebraska. Two young couples moved into the area. We enjoyed having them as a part of the group, but rumblings were soon heard that they were spreading false doctrine in private Bible studies. I asked and received a copy of a book called Freedom’s Ring by Cecil Hooks. Reading through it, I realized that it sounded very familiar. It was Holt’s teachings repackaged. After a series of confrontations both public and private, the couples left, along with two new converts that they had influenced.

Cecil Hooks’ website has extensive links to the writings of W. Carl Ketcherside and Leroy Garrett. Charles Holt acknowledges that his views stem from his reading of W. Carl Ketcherside and Leroy Garrett [“The Editor and His ‘Admirers’– Some Observations,” The Examiner, Vol. 4, No. 4]. Carl Ketcherside was influenced by Daniel Sommer, editor of the Octographic Review, which was also called the American Christian Review. Sommer opposed the idea of located preachers. Later in Ketcherside’s life, he became fascinated with the idea of unity, renounced many of his old beliefs, and began promoting the acceptance of all believers in Christ. [Scott Harp,”The Life of Carl Ketcherside,” ]. It is the later Ketcherside teachings that were picked up by Garrett, Holt, and Hooks.

However, the seeds for these beliefs are even older. Back in 1856, a debate occurred between Robert Milligan and Tolbert Fanning in the pages of the Gospel Advocate. Fanning advocated this view:

“The logical teachers, and overseers of the church were elders. The elders were by the elderly men in the church. They ‘kept the house for the Lord,’ and edified the saints. All the teaching was done by this group. They had no office, but each elder (old man) in accordance with his ability, taught and edified the church. The evangelists went from place to place, preaching the gospel, establishing churches, and encouraging them to meet regularly. With Fanning located preachers were but pastors and were taboo. So with salaried ministers.” [Earl West, The Search for the Ancient Order, Vol. 1, p. 342].

The tenet that preachers should not be located at and supported by one congregation is advocated by what is commonly called the mutual edification movement. Carl Ketcherside, Leroy Garret, Charles Holt, and Cecil Hooks are all apologists for this movement.

“The Examiner. This movement, spearheaded by Charles Holt, opposed the traditional eldership as a self-perpetuating, back-room decision making, board. It called for an end to the concept of the located preacher and the local church treasury. The movement had minimal effect on the churches generally, though some individuals adopted the view and separated themselves from the local church.” [Ferrel Jenkins, “Please Don’t Call Us ‘Anti’,” Pepperdine University Bible Lectures, May 1, 1998].

We should be aware of the history behind these teachings. When we were dealing with the false teaching in La Vista, people were repeatedly stating that the ideas advocated seemed like a jumbled mess without a unifying core. Knowing the history, it can be explained in Ketcherside’s shifting beliefs that were picked up wholesale by others.

While these men have been faced down in the past and proven wrong repeatedly, they would tell their readers that no one has been able to oppose them and that no one would debate them – claims that are easily proven to be false. Yet, with the Internet providing easy access to documents of the past, the old ideas that were proven wrong get picked up again, requiring churches to defend the truth all over again.

Question:

Asked a question of previous Williams Road Church of Christ why they removed the "church of Christ" and now just refer to themselves as the Williams Road Church. The short answer referred me to Cecil Hook and his book Free in Christ. What would the explanation be without me reading and how far off base are they by referring to this for an answer to this and other issues. Thanks for any quick explanation you can give to help me out. I am, in near future, going to come up with a copy of this book and do other personal research.

Answer:

Cecil Hook is the most recent spokesman for a false set of concepts that date back to my grandfather's day. It started with Carl Ketcherside and was picked by Leroy Garrett. Charles Holt promoted it in the 1980s and now it is Cecil Hook. By the way, you don't have to buy his book, the texts (and there are several of them) are all online.

The ideas are promoted by asking a lot of questions while initially giving very few answers. The questions target dissatisfaction with the way churches are being operated. Any mistakes done by leaders in the church are harped on and insinuated to be caused by misapplication of the Scripture (not proven, just implied). Thus, they build on a foundation of complaints.

From that basis, the reader is then told there are no laws in Christ. What are called laws by everyone else are merely suggestions for implementing basic principles, such as love, peace, justice, etc. Therefore, anything goes so long as you have "love." It doesn't matter if instrumental music is used or not. It doesn't matter what day of the week the Lord's Supper is partaken. Elders are only older people (men and women) in a congregation. There are no preachers supported to teach the gospel, preachers are just whoever is teaching a lesson that week. In fact, this belief teaches that it doesn't matter what church you attend.

To the adherents of this flawed thinking, every person is saved until they learn something from the Gospel and then reject it. Thus, if a person was only taught that salvation comes from faith alone, then that is all they are responsible for until someone teaches them differently. If you think about it, the Gospel becomes teaching that causes people to be lost and not saved.

The idea of establishing authority for our actions through commands, examples, and necessary inference is totally rejected. It is mocked and made fun of; yet, its adherents never realize that by their own illogic they cannot establish that they are right because they reject the ways people communicate.

Since it is seductive teaching to the disgruntled, it spreads. Yet, over time every group that follows this teaching disappears. The reason is simple. If I'm saved in my current beliefs and my current church, then why join a small group? I can get everything that makes me happy elsewhere. Thus, the churches die rapidly. Unfortunately, there are always people who are unhappy with things as they are. They want to leave their "mark" and many turn to this set of beliefs.

The best description of this group is found in the words of Peter:

"For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error, promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved" (II Peter 2:18-19).
