"Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe. And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day, just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire ... But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life" (Jude 5-7,20-21).

Notice that "eternal" is used three times in Jude. If Jude is using "eternal" to refer to quality, then the fallen angels are not going to be bound forever, nor will the righteous live forever. Any change to the concept of hell also requires the same concept of heaven. "These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life" (Matthew 25:46). The same Greek word is used in Matthew as it was used in Jude.

The sinners of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim were placed under a sentence or punishment by God. Jude's point is that we need to realize that God is willing and able to punish sinners. Their punishment brought them to face the eternal fires of Hell -- in other words, the destruction by fire was not their end but just the beginning of what they earned by their sins. Yes, the fire here on earth burnt out, and their earthly bodies were destroyed, but that was not their final end. When Jesus told the story of the rich man and Lazarus, notice the state of the rich man: "In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame'" (Luke 16:23-24). Those who died in Sodom and the other cities went from death by fire to existence in the fire in Hades and eventually, on Judgment Day they will be sentenced to eternal punishment in Hell.

Eternity is like a circle (no beginning or end). This is an issue that I have pointed out time and again and still have not received an answer to me that is logical or even answers the question I'm about to ask: God gave us brains to use, so the issue of logic is a legitimate response. To get back to the beginning of time, you go onto the circle and then begin going backward until you come to the end. The problem is that you never will come to the end. You will for eternity keep going around the line of the circle. Explain to me how God, being Eternal, can exist when there is no beginning point in the circle for Him to start the creation. I'm still headed backward in the circle and will forever. In addition, God knows everything, past, and future. God hates sin. God then knew that His creation would create sin because He knows the future. Why would He allow the creation of sin, something that He hates? If He wanted company after the end of the world, He could have created a sinless nation.

Answer:

You ask for a logical answer, but you present an illogical question. An illustration is a way of explaining a complex idea in terms of something familiar. You say that eternity is like a circle. That is a claim, it isn't proof. Since you make the claim, it is up to you to support your claim with evidence, but you didn't do so. Yet your question is dependent on an unproven assertion.

Actually, since you yourself claim to come to a contradiction and don't see how God can be eternal if eternity is a circle, then logic demands that your assertion is false.

Another flaw is that you assert that you never received an answer that you accept. I'm not surprised. If you make yourself the standard, then anything that you want to reject will never be acceptable to you.

In regards to the claim that God knows everything, your assertion does not match quite what the Bible teaches because it assumes there is nothing that is unknowable. See: "If God is sovereign, why does He express sorrow when men are bad?"

In regards to sin, you assume there is no value to people choosing to do what is right. You assume that it is only the end result of righteousness that God wants and discount that God finds value in the choice. See Free-Will and the Power of God. So in an indirect way you are right. If all God wanted was company, He could have made a sinless people. God didn't make it impossible to sin. Therefore, company is not all that God wants.

Is Job's friend, Elihu, telling us here that God's greatness is just as unsearchable as the number of His years? Could this passage be used in defense for God's infinity? Could I expound on this and say that according to Psalms 145:1-3 that since God is unsearchable, we will be praising him forever due to his infinite greatness?

Answer:

I just read that verse in Job last night as a part of my lesson. Yes, Elihu is stating that God is beyond our full comprehension. We sometimes can talk about the characteristics of God in broad strokes, just like we can talk about infinity as a concept, but really grasping what it means is beyond our capacity.

"Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways," says the LORD. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts"" (Isaiah 55:8-10).

Paul expressed it in this way:

"Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! "For who has known the mind of the LORD? Or who has become His counselor?" "Or who has first given to Him And it shall be repaid to him?" For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen" (Romans 11:33-36).

I love your last line. It is a great rephrasing of what Elihu stated.

Answer:

"Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen" (Hebrews 13:20-21).

The phrase "the blood of the everlasting covenant" is referring back to the Hebrews writer's comments regarding the inauguration of covenants by the shedding of blood.

"And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood. For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying, "This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you." Then likewise he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission" (Hebrews 9:15-22).

Jesus death and shed blood established a covenant that promised eternal life to those under the covenant. Thus, in this sense, it is an eternal covenant.

But the plan for the death of Jesus to save mankind from sin was established before the world began.

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth--in Him. In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory" (Ephesians 1:3-12).

Thus we can say that the plan for Jesus' blood to be shed has existed eternally; thus creating an eternal covenant.

Both directions are seen in Paul's statement of past, present and future, "Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel" (II Timothy 1:8-10).

In the Bible, the word "eternal" or "everlasting" or "forever" or "perpetual" does not necessarily mean without end. The ancients used this concept to mean a long period of time without a definite or predictable end. Thus the way we use eternity is included in the definition, but it can also be used in regards to things that we know have ended. For example, the sacrifices of the Old Covenant were to be everlasting. "And it shall be for Aaron and his sons, and they shall eat it in a holy place; for it is most holy to him from the offerings of the LORD made by fire, by a perpetual statute" (Leviticus 24:9). But these sacrifices came to an end. "Not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another-- He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation" (Hebrews 9:25-28). At the time the sacrifices were established, it was put in place eternally, that is it would continue for a long, indefinite period of time. Those sacrifices continued for over 1,500 years until the coming of the Messiah.

Thus some past promises were called everlasting covenants. "The covenant which He made with Abraham, and His oath to Isaac, and confirmed it to Jacob for a statute, to Israel for an everlasting covenant, saying, "To you I will give the land of Canaan as the allotment of your inheritance"" (I Chronicles 16:16-18). Israel possessed the land for a long, indefinite period of time, but their occupation came to an end.

Some argue that since these covenants God made through the ages were done to accomplish the salvation of mankind, they are sub-parts of the eternal covenant. However, since it takes the shedding of blood to ratify a covenant, the eternal covenant spoken of in Hebrews 13:20 did not come into effect until Jesus died. The other covenants were active prior to his death, and in some cases were replaced by the covenant established by his death. "In that He says, "A new covenant," He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away" (Hebrews 8:13). Therefore, it is not proper to see past covenants as part of Christ's covenant since they went into effect before Christ's covenant was established and since they came to an end while Christ's covenant remains.

Answer:

A portion of your questions was previously answered in "What happens to you when you die?" Rather than repeating the material here, I ask you to read that answer and I will focus on the remaining questions here.

"I said in my heart, "Concerning the condition of the sons of men, God tests them, that they may see that they themselves are like animals." For what happens to the sons of men also happens to animals; one thing befalls them: as one dies, so dies the other. Surely, they all have one breath; man has no advantage over animals, for all is vanity. All go to one place: all are from the dust, and all return to dust. Who knows the spirit of the sons of men, which goes upward, and the spirit of the animal, which goes down to the earth? So I perceived that nothing is better than that a man should rejoice in his own works, for that is his heritage. For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?" (Ecclesiastes 3:18-22).

The writer of Ecclesiastes, Solomon, notes that two things that happen to men and animals. One of those things is the same ("All are from the dust, and all return to dust") and one is different ("the spirit of the sons of men, which goes upward, and the spirit of the animal, which goes down to the earth"). A little later in the book, Solomon again states the same fact concerning man. "Remember your Creator before the silver cord is loosed, Or the golden bowl is broken, Or the pitcher shattered at the fountain, Or the wheel broken at the well. Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it" (Ecclesiastes 12:6-7).

Why did God place men in a world where they die? Solomon says that it is a test or a trial. One of the things we are to learn is that we are, in some ways, like the animals -- we physically die. Paul commented, "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12). Or as the Hebrew writer points out, "And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). In this sense, man has no advantage over the animals. The fact that he has a spirit from God doesn't make him better than an animal in this regard. In other words, the fact that we must die ought to be a humbling thought to every man. We are in this state because of sin; Adam opened the door to sin and death and we keep the door open each time we sin.

The sons of Korah explains this in Psalm 49: "Hear this, all peoples; Give ear, all inhabitants of the world, Both low and high, Rich and poor together. My mouth will speak wisdom, And the meditation of my heart will be understanding. I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will express my riddle on the harp. Why should I fear in days of adversity, When the iniquity of my foes surrounds me, Even those who trust in their wealth And boast in the abundance of their riches? No man can by any means redeem his brother Or give to God a ransom for him-- For the redemption of his soul is costly, And he should cease trying forever-- That he should live on eternally, That he should not undergo decay. For he sees that even wise men die; The stupid and the senseless alike perish And leave their wealth to others. Their inner thought is that their houses are forever And their dwelling places to all generations; They have called their lands after their own names. But man in his pomp will not endure; He is like the beasts that perish. This is the way of those who are foolish, And of those after them who approve their words. Selah. As sheep they are appointed for Sheol; Death shall be their shepherd; And the upright shall rule over them in the morning, And their form shall be for Sheol to consume So that they have no habitation. But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol, For He will receive me. Selah. Do not be afraid when a man becomes rich, When the glory of his house is increased; For when he dies he will carry nothing away; His glory will not descend after him. Though while he lives he congratulates himself--And though men praise you when you do well for yourself-- He shall go to the generation of his fathers; They will never see the light. Man in his pomp, yet without understanding, Is like the beasts that perish." (Psalms 49:1-20)

Man often thinks of him was something great, especially those who gain great wealth. But as the sons of Korah note, all the wealth in the world cannot buy the salvation of a single soul. Nor can wealth purchase eternal life. Oh, we often act as if we will live forever, but everyone dies. It is what happens to man after death that is important.

Which brings us to the last point of Solomon. If we focus solely on the physical body, man is no different from an animal, but if we focus on the spirit there is a huge difference. Yet who comprehends this? There are far too many living life as if they are nothing more than animals. "But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves" (Jude 10).

Do we live on after death? Most certainly! "For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory."" (I Corinthians 15:53-54). Or as Paul also said, "For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, and I also trust are well known in your consciences" (II Corinthians 5:1-11). Notice carefully that Paul said that the building we receive after this one dies is eternal. It is true for both the righteous and the wicked. "And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life" (Matthew 25:46). Knowing that God keeps His promises, knowing that He promised eternal punishment for the wicked, ought we not be eager to make sure that we, our families, our friends, and our neighbors all spend eternity in Heaven and not Hell?
