Question:

Hello,

I would like to discuss with you the ultimate fate of the five foolish virgins who were shut out.

My understanding is that the five foolish virgins simply missed out on sharing the Millennial Feast with God and rejoicing in Christ's presence; God’s statement that He did not "know" them signifies His disapproval of their failure to prepare, yet they could still ultimately enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

The initial supply of lamp oil was a free gift from God, whereas the second supply required them to pay a price to prepare it themselves.

What is your view on this?

Answer:

"Then the kingdom of heaven will be comparable to ten virgins, who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were prudent. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the prudent took oil in flasks along with their lamps. Now while the bridegroom was delaying, they all got drowsy and began to sleep. But at midnight there was a shout, 'Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.' Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the prudent, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' But the prudent answered, 'No, there will not be enough for us and you too; go instead to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.' And while they were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut. Later the other virgins also came, saying, 'Lord, lord, open up for us.' But he answered, 'Truly I say to you, I do not know you.' Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour" (Matthew 25:1-13).

The parable starts out with "the kingdom of heaven will be comparable to ten virgins." This isn't about entering the kingdom. The virgins are a part of the kingdom.

The point of the parable of the ten virgins and those surrounding it is that a person must be watchful because we do not know when the Lord will return. Just because a person is part of the kingdom does not mean they have a guaranteed entrance into heaven. Each person must be prepared to hold on for an unknown length of time. It is required of Christians to remain steadfast (Hebrews 3:14; 6:11; Revelation 2:10). Like the warning in the parable of the sower (Matthew 13:3-9, 18-23), the church is composed of people who will endure and those who will fall away. Only the wise understand the need to be prepared for endurance.

Just as one Christian cannot give their righteousness to another, the wise virgins were unable to help the foolish virgins in being ready for the bridegroom. Each person must individually put in their own effort to be ready. No one can make you get ready or do the work on your behalf (Philippians 2:12). Nor will there be an opportunity for a second chance once the Lord returns (Hebrews 9:27).

The foolish virgins were unable to enter into the presence of the Lord in heaven because they were not adequately prepared. Nothing states that such people are given a second chance.

There is no "millennial feast." There is eternity with the Lord in heaven. Premillennialism is not taught in the Scriptures. See "An Overview of Premillennial Theories."

Nothing in this parable mentions where the oil came from. You assume that it was given to the virgins, but if that was so, why were some given an insufficient amount? Adding things to a parable that isn't there detracts from its intended message.

“Flee these things,” Paul tells Timothy. Which things? He says this in the context of warning Timothy about the love of money and the craving to be rich. Don’t just avoid it. Flee it, Paul says. Instead of pursuing riches, pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. After all, these are the kinds of things that will not only benefit us in this life but also bring blessings in the next.

Fight the good fight of faith, Paul says. But why call it that? Because walking by faith is a struggle. It is a fight. The pursuit of finances is full of sight. We can see the bottom line. We can see the benefits and blessings. Pursuing God instead of money is often counterintuitive. Pursuing God takes faith in the unseen. Pursuing God means trusting Him to provide when we cannot see how or when He will. Pursuing God means trusting that the next life, the one we can’t see, is worth more than this life, the one we can.

When we fight the good fight, we may find ourselves in the same shoes as Jesus, who made the good confession before Pilate, right before Pilate had Him nailed to a cross. Talk about walking by faith. Talk about fighting by faith. When we fight the good fight of faith, we will keep the commandment of Christ unstained and free from reproach until Christ appears. All the while, walking by the faith that Christ will one day appear. Fighting the good fight of faith means holding on to the faith that God is the blessed and only Sovereign, King of kings and Lord of lords. He alone has immortality. He dwells in unapproachable light. No one has ever seen Him or can see Him. But we believe in Him even in the face of those who mock us for doing so. And we give Him honor and trust in His dominion even if it leads us to our deaths.
That is fighting the good fight of faith. Let us wage this good warfare together. And let us together take hold of the eternal life to which we have been called.

by Jefferson David Tant
via Sentry Magazine, Vol. 20 No. 4, December 1994

Within the context of Philippians 4:10-20, are these words: "Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:11-13).

In August, 1993, while driving a rental van picking up students for our Vacation Bible Study in Montego Bay, Jamaica, I noticed two or three adults and several children walking from the hills down to town. I stopped and gave them a ride, and from that meeting, eventually got Sandra Green and her children to attend our VBS and gospel meeting.

One day I received consent for my wife and myself to come visit her. Flora and I arrived at the appointed time, blew the horn, and watched as Sandra picked her way down a rocky crag from her home. She then led us up a twisted and rocky path to her home, which boasted a spectacular view of the bay far below. But that was about all that was positive about her surroundings.

Sandra has five children of her own. and has taken in a child whose mother died, and whose father did not want her. Sandra is 30. Her husband abandoned her and gives no support. She said one night, one of her friends came to visit and spent the night with them. The three adults slept in one bed, and in the night, she found her husband committing adultery with her friend. Well, so much for faithful husbands!

I have become acquainted with poverty in the West Indies, but I don’t know that I had come face to face with it as on this occasion. The "house" (or shack) was made from scrap lumber, zinc, cardboard, and castoff metal sheets from the newspaper printing press. It measured 8x10, with a cooking area (with a one-burner kerosene stove) attached to one side of the house, and the dishwashing area was outside on a board attached to two trees. No electricity. No water. The furniture consisted of two beds - a double and a single. Except for a couple of rickety chairs, that was it.

But there was something that was impressed upon us even more than this scene of abject, hopeless poverty that surrounded us. As Sandra opened the door and we stepped inside, one of the first things I saw was a little hand-lettered poster she had pasted to the wall. In bold letters, it said, “Thank you, Lord. My needs are met, and healing is mine. Hallelujah. Thank you, Jesus." What would you have done when confronting that? I’ll tell you what I did. I wept.

And what does that say to you? We live in the most affluent generation and society the earth has known. Yet, how is it that so many are never satisfied, even among us, the children of God? And how is it that the apostle Paul could be "languishing" in a prison cell and yet say, "I have all things, and abound: I am filled..." (Philippians 4:18). Please give some thought to these things as we look at what God supplies.

A Provident God

Why do we worry so when we have such a provident God? He is a God who supplies our temporal needs. In Jacob’s last moments on this earth, he said, "The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, The God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day" (Genesis 48:15). Paul said, "And my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches..." (Philippians 4:19). (See Isaiah 40:11; II Corinthians 1:3-7). Furthermore, he fills the needs of the spirit. "How blessed is the one whom Thou does choose, and bring near to thee, to dwell in thy courts. We will be satisfied with the goodness of Thy house" (Psalms 65:4). The Word further declares that "No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly" (Psalms 84:11). (See Proverbs 21:21). God is so gracious that his blessings even extend to our children (Psalms 103:17-18).

What more could we ask? But we always want more — more money, more clothes, newer cars, bigger houses, better TV’s, remodeled kitchens, bigger closets, better-paying jobs, more prestige, greater power, etc. It reminds us of the song that says, "Lookin’ for love in all the wrong places." As to things, they really don’t satisfy or fill our needs. All you have to do to confirm this is look at those the world looks to as "having it all" -- the rich, the Hollywood stars, the "beautiful people." They are among the world’s least secure, as looks fade, riches may be lost, power is taken away, and they turn to adultery, drugs, alcohol, and suicide because they find life so empty and not worth living.

Just what is it that men seek after? Happiness, peace, contentment, security. And while the things of the world may supply these things for a time, they don’t last. "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal" (Mat. 6:19). We can’t take these things with us, and even if we could, my grandfather Tant was wont to say, "We’d probably get them burned up the first night, anyhow." Satan has done his job well in giving us cotton candy and convincing us that it is good, nutritious, and filling food. I am convinced that the goal of many is simply to be the richest person in the cemetery!

The Secret of Contentment

The secret of contentment is in learning to distinguish between needs and wants. Perhaps this is one of our greatest difficulties. Do we use the words "need" and "want" interchangeably? You "need" a new car. Why? Well, the one you have is five years old with 75,000 miles on it. Your wife "needs" a new dress. Why? She only has 30, and some are a bit out of style. I wonder what Paul meant when he said, "I ... have an abundance; I am amply supplied" (Philippians 4:19)?

We can also learn contentment by replacing worry with trust in God. Why worry when you can pray? Or as one fellow emphasized this with a sign in his office: "Why trust when you can worry?" Worry is destructive — to good health, to positive action, to faith in God. God has told us, "Do not worry" (Matthew 6:25-34). Think about it. What positive thing has worry ever done for you? I often tell people who worry about money to gather all their bills, pile them on the kitchen table, gather the whole family around, and sit up all night worrying about them. Then, when the sun arises, they are to count the bills to see what good their worrying has done.

We can also learn to replace covetousness with contentment. This may take some work, for the world around us certainly promotes covetousness. Where did Ted Turner make his first millions? Advertising billboards. Everywhere you turn, it’s "Buy this, buy that, lease this, put it on your credit card, take out a loan, this is really hot this year...." But do you remember what Jesus said, "Take heed, and keep yourselves from all covetousness; for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things which he possesses" (Luke 12:15).

If it were true that possessions are what life is all about, then how do you explain the happiness of people who have little or nothing in the world? I can remember being in the home of David and Maria in Mexico some years ago. It was a humble home with a dirt floor — neatly swept, no electricity. They had one meal a day, mostly beans, eaten as late in the day as they could wait. They had no running water, but bought water from a truck that came through the village. They used the water first for drinking and cooking, then what was left for washing dishes, and finally for washing clothes and bathing. They were so happy that we could come to see them, and we perceived that they were happy people. How could they be happy? They had learned what Paul had learned. "Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance 1 have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need" (Philippians 4:11-12). Indeed, they had given heed to God’s word. "Let your character be free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,’ so that we confidently say, ’The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What shall man do to me?’" (Hebrews 13:5-6).

We can also learn to count our blessings rather than our burdens. "Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders which Thou hast done, and Thy thoughts toward us; there is none to compare with Thee; if I would declare and speak of them, they would be too numerous to count" (Psalms 40:5). Is there one of us who does not have more blessings than burdens? If we can focus on the good rather than the bad, life will be a lot better for us in every way.

What to Do with Our Abundance

We can share it with the Lord. "Now this I say, he who sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly; and he who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully. Let each one do just as he has purposed in his heart; not grudgingly or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver" (II Corinthians 9:6-7). With this money, we can carry on the Lord’s work. I appreciate congregations that are more interested in spreading God’s kingdom than in fancy buildings. Is there more that can be done? Letters come to us on a regular basis from men seeking support to take the gospel to the four corners of the earth.

We live in a time that has not been known for ages — possibly not since the first century. Nations are open, and opportunities abound. But many preachers have difficulty raising support, and some who go live on the edge, scraping by day by day, not receiving adequate wages, but so committed to their work that they will not leave. Are they the only ones who are to sacrifice?

Is there more that we can do? What our congregations do depends upon what we, as individuals, do. Remember, the church is the "pillar and ground of the truth" (I Timothy 3:15).

We can also share with those in need. There are fellow Christians who are sometimes in need. "And the congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own; but all things were common property to them...For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds of the sales and lay them at the apostles’ feet; and they would be distributed to each, as any had need" (Acts 4:32-35). (See also, Rom. 15:25,26). And then there are those in the world to whom we can show mercy, as well. "For the poor you always have with you, and whenever you wish, you can do them good..." (Mark 14:7).

The Blessings that Come

If we learn these lessons, wonderful things are in store for us. First, God will bless us. "Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, they will pour into you lap. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return" (Luke 6:38). "Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness; you will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving to God" (II Corinthians 9:10-11).

We are also promised treasures in heaven. "Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to shai־e, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed" (I Timothy 6:17-19).

And finally, there is the blessing of glorifying God. "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 5:16).

Conclusion

What a great God we have! He is the answer to all our needs. "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13). He gives us joy and peace - something far better than all the riches of the world can give. "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your forbearing spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 4:4-7).

And what else is there?

Thank you, Sandra Green, for teaching us a lesson, and thank you, Lord Jesus, for all that you have done and continue to do for us.

"The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do" (Matthew 23:2-3).

Saying and doing are closely related, but they are two different things. It is possible, as we all know, to say one thing and then turn around and do things completely inconsistent with what we’ve said. Regarding the Pharisees, Jesus warned His disciples against those who violated the very precepts they preached to others: “Do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.”

The Pharisees were hypocrites. They knew very well that they were not what they pretended to be (Matthew 23:27-28), and they flagrantly disregarded their own diatribes about remaining pure and unpolluted by the “worldliness” of Hellenistic culture. Probably not many reading these words are guilty of such blatant hypocrisy. We are guilty of something more subtle: we simply neglect to practice what we preach because we’ve so emphasized “standing for the truth” that we unwittingly slip into thinking we're saved by what we stand for — and by saying what is right about what we stand for.

Do not misunderstand me. It is essential to stand for what is right and make compelling arguments for our stances. But we are not saved by “saying” alone. For instance, we may be deeply disturbed by socialism and ready to debate socialists at every opportunity. But if the public knew everything God knows about us, would we be hypocrites for worrying about something like socialism? But whether it’s socialism, legalism, or any other “ism,” if God is concerned about the position, He’s even more concerned about the private conduct of the person taking the position. May we never define our standing before God solely by the list of things we’re against in other people’s lives!

During Jesus’ ministry, people marveled at His gracious words, but without unity between His words and His life, He would have been just the latest crowd-pleasing speaker. As it was, His deeds empowered His words, making them more than entertaining homilies. Our words and deeds are not sinless as His were, but the laws of influence operate today the same as they did back then. Enduring influence isn’t produced by dynamic presentations — it must be backed up by integrity and diligence in the teacher’s personal obedience.

by Edwin Crozier

Augustine reportedly summarized Christian salvation and growth this way: “Without God, I cannot. Without me, God will not.”

Peter demonstrates this dynamic cooperation as he outlines Christian maturity in II Peter 1. Apart from God’s divine power, divine promises, divine call, and divine election, we could not possibly grow to maturity by our own efforts, no matter how diligent. Some, through the centuries, have taken this notion too far. They have claimed this means our efforts do not matter. They have claimed that we don’t make any effort ourselves, but only make an effort to the degree God has chosen and predestined us to exert it. This notion, however, flies in the face of Peter’s letter and his instruction to be diligent in our own effort.

Peter considers the foundation of God’s power, promises, call, and election settled. His concern is that Christians exert their efforts. Twice, he exhorts his audience to exercise personal effort. He begins his discussion of mature growth by claiming that we must bring all diligent effort to add mature Christian qualities to our faith. Then he concludes this list by claiming we must give all diligent effort to make our calling and election firm, sure, and certain.

Peter does not mean our calling and election depend on us. He does not mean we are to earn our way into the kingdom. If so, then it would be based on our power. But it is not. It is based on God’s power. Yet, he tells us to exert our power.

No doubt, this seems like double-talk and is confusing. Allow me to share an illustration to clear up the point. Consider the Israelites standing at the edge of the Promised Land after they had been delivered from Egyptian bondage. By their own effort, they could not conquer the Promised Land. They didn’t have the skill, the acumen, the strength, the power. Yet, God told them to go take the land. They could take it, not because they had the ability, but because God had the power and God was with them. The question for them was not if they believed they were strong enough to take the land, but whether they believed God was strong enough to take the land using them. Sadly, the first generation didn’t try and fail. Rather, they failed to take the land because they failed to act on God’s promises and power. The second generation did not succeed because they exerted perfect effort. They failed in multiple ways. They succeeded because they made the effort God directed them to make.

Israel’s initial failure and later success help us see the question we must ask ourselves as we hear Peter’s double exhortation to make every effort. Not: do we believe we are strong enough to mature? Not: do we believe we have the capacity to make our calling and election certain? But do we believe God has the power to grow, establish, and confirm us? If we believe God is strong enough, we will make the effort, knowing our effort is not alone but is anchored in God, multiplied by God, and made effective through God.

God richly provided an entrance for ancient Israel into the Promised Land, not because they were strong enough, but because He was. But He did so only when they believed His promises enough to make the effort to take the land. In like manner, we will only grow to maturity and partake of the divine nature when we believe God is so powerful that He can mature us as we make the effort to conquer sin and corrupt desire in our own lives. That belief, that faith, that trust, that allegiance is not demonstrated in words and statements. It is demonstrated in action and effort. Often flawed and faltering action. Often failed and fumbling efforts. But we keep making our effort, weak though they may be, not because we think we’ll finally accomplish something, but because we know God will accomplish something through us when we make the effort.

Will you make the effort? What quality will you diligently work on today? How will you work on it? Let us know in the comments section below.

Being a "living sacrifice" sounds hard. Few people like the word "sacrifice," it sounds too much like giving something up that you'd rather not. And a 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 sacrifice? Well, that sounds even harder.

But the more you become one, the less of a sacrifice it seems. What once felt like loss becomes a grateful act of relinquishment. We freely offer our selfish wants, lustful desires, and everyday burdens for Christ, allowing us to focus on the things in our lives that are pleasing to God, leading to a life of purpose. What was once a sacrifice becomes a blessing.

The kingdom of God is likened unto a treasure hidden in a field, or to a lost coin whose owner searched diligently till she found it. Indeed, there is preciousness associated with the kingdom that warrants our seeking that we might find it.

We need to find the yoke of rest in Christ Jesus (Matthew 11:28-30). Our increasingly complex and difficult world has left many thousands without hope, perplexed, and on the verge of suicide. There is relief in God’s safe haven, Jesus Christ, which can be found nowhere else.

There is a pasture which provides sustenance when we go in and out to feed in it (John 10:9). The spiritual nourishment provided by God will ease the discomfort brought on by a spiritually bankrupt world.

There is God’s grace, which is found in Christ (Hebrews 4:16). God does not want any to be lost and has provided His avenue of salvation to all who will seek Him.

To learn more about these precious treasures that man needs to find, visit, call, or write.

As a pre-teen and a teenager, I had one way to get in shape each year. It would take one week. One week of walking up and down watermelon rows. Turning them over, picking them up, tossing them to the next guy, tossing them on a truck, or catching them from the guy before you, or catching them on the truck, laying them down, and catching another one as fast as they could bring them. You went home, showered, ate, and woke up in the dark the next morning to do it again. During the night, you wake up, sit in bed with your arms, and move your left to right. Dreaming that you were still working. We never worked on Sundays. That was the point in time when one or two farmers tried to get people to work on Sundays. That was near when local guys quit working because farmers wanted people who would work on Sundays. That second week, you could get out of bed easily; you could be at work where the bottom half of your pants from your knees down were soaking wet from the dew, and you worked all day without your muscles being exhausted—even hefting the 50 to 80-pound watermelons.

The money from working bought my own clothes. I also bought two steers and one hog with Mike Warren, which I grew, stocked, and took to the bin where they processed it. I'm a bit fuzzy about how much of the garden was the family and how much of it was mine because the garden was part of my 4-H project. Other things I did with the livestock were part of FFA projects. Included in that time of my life was public speaking in 4H. Learning the 4H creed is something that everyone in society could benefit from. It stays with you your entire life and in everything you ever do.

All of that to say, I’m back home. Those things are what help shape me and make me. Working at Winn-Dixie, Morrisons, cafeteria management training, Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, road guard, and even my preaching and teaching for 30 years benefited from the time I spent growing up on the farm and in a small town.

When my wife was sick, we knew she needed fresh, homegrown food without pesticides. I told her I could grow anything. I could not. Not where I was living. I can now, and I will. Today, I have corn, yellow squash, and onions in the ground. I had some green beans and other greens in the ground a couple of days ago. I’m trying to grow my garden for the freshness in nutrition and health benefits but never underestimate it. The greatest benefit is being in the dirt yourself and being out there working. The labor. The work. The first commandment is to love God. The second is to love our neighbor. But the first command in the Old Testament was to work. God gave me a job, and He said to take care of it. This earth is yours to take care of it. Get to work.

A freeze is coming in a few days, but then the ground will be just fine.
