“And he prayed to the LORD and said, “O LORD, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster” (Jonah 4:2).

In the list of most criticized people in Scripture, Jonah often falls among those at the top of the list. We note that he is hard-hearted, rebellious, petulant, and whiny. He is unforgiving and disappointed in God for being forgiving and long-suffering. In our minds, we divorce our self-image from Jonah in a way that we rarely, if ever, ask ourselves if we are like Jonah.

Ancient cuneiform tablets describing the acts of Ashurnasirpal II (who reigned about the time of Jonah) describe a brutal and cruel man who covered the pillars of the city with the skins of his enemies. This helps us to understand Jonah’s refusal to go. It is probably true that the sins of Nineveh far outstrip those who have wronged us, but do we also harbor desires of vengeance and retribution, not wanting God to bless them?

Maybe you’re thinking, “God called Jonah to go to his enemies, but I never got that call.” But we have on a variety of occasions. We are to “go into all the world… to every creature… making disciples.” We are to “love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us.” We are called to “take up our cross (an implement of self-sacrifice) and follow Jesus” as we give ourselves up for others.

Am I Jonah? Do I run away from the commands of YHWH as Jonah did? Do I harbor the same or similar feelings in my heart toward those who have hurt me?

How must God feel when He freely offers His great salvation, purchased at such dreadful cost, but the vast majority are not interested, too busy doing their own thing to care?

A Recurring Theme

“I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it. But My people did not listen to My voice . . .” (Psalms 81:10-12).

“Thus says the LORD: ‘Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.’ But they said, 'We will not walk in it'" (Jeremiah 6:16).

“I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, sending them persistently, saying, ‘Turn now every one of you from his evil way, and amend your deeds, and do not go after other gods to serve them, and then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to you and your fathers.’ But You did not incline your ear or listen to Me” (Jeremiah 35:15).

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!” (Luke 13:34).

“And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, ‘Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes’” (Luke 19:41-42).

So Very Sad!

How it breaks God’s great heart of love, knowing how wonderful a sinner’s life could be if only . . .

What a heavy responsibility it is to have free will! God gives us a choice. He urges us to do what is for our ultimate good and warns us what to expect if we refuse. Then He waits for our response. God has experienced sorrow upon sorrow from those who shun His offer. But oh, how He rejoices when a sinner comes home (Luke 15)!

Each of us has made Him sad. So now, let’s make Him glad!

Question:

Good day,

I have a rather important question that's been bothering me. In James 2:10, it is stated that all sins are equal. Breaking one means breaking all. It is trying to get the idea across that we shouldn't excuse sins because that might lead us to accept some sins into our lives and not others. Instead, the point is that we shouldn't be led to sin. We will always be tempted, but the command is not to sin. However, here is my dilemma;

The preacher of my previous congregation smoked cigarettes and drank whiskey as you would water -- not a lot, but he never drank water. I know because his grandson and I were friends, and I went over to them a lot. This would constitute two sins, both of which he did until his death. Am I to believe that he is in hell because he sinned and he knew he did? Yet, he taught me everything about the Bible, the church, and Christianity. It was he who baptized me for the remission of my sins into the body of Christ.

So, I think you can understand my confusion about James 2:10 and my life experience. It is also stated by Jesus in Matthew chapter 7 that we will know them by their fruits. I know him very well by his fruits. He tolerated me even though I was annoying at times, he kept on teaching me no matter how difficult I became, and he never snapped at me in any way. He did exactly as the Bible said and he taught as the Bible taught, but then he just had these two sins that he never gave up. We are commanded to repent and turn away from all sin by I John 3:6-7, James 4:7, and II Corinthians 5:17. I am still a faithful member of the body and I would just like to have this one point clarified.

Kind regards.

Answer:

You and I are not the final judge of another man. We don't know everything. We don't know people's motivations. "Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men's hearts; and then each man's praise will come to him from God" (I Corinthians 4:5). While you may not know what God's decision will be, you can ask God to be merciful to the man who had done much in your life.

Smoking, at best, is foolish since we know it does significant harm to the body. Alcohol is also harmful, and the Bible gives numerous warnings against the casual use of alcohol.

James' point is that we should not excuse our sins while condemning the sins others commit. In the chapter, James is talking about showing partiality toward some. You can't say that because you don't steal or commit murder, then this means you are justified in God's view in showing partiality. Comparing your sins to the sins of other people is not wise. We all have sinned and desire God's mercy; therefore, we must show mercy toward others. This doesn't mean we accept sin. Rather, we teach against it and don't hold a person's past sins against him when he repents.

The preacher you knew was a flawed man. His life is now in God's hands. Regardless of his destiny, I'm positive he would want you to go to heaven. Therefore, don't imitate the flaws of others. Live the best life that you can as you serve God.

A line in the sand has a universal meaning: Don't cross it.

II Kings 17 tells of the end of the northern kingdom of Israel and the reasons for its fall (II Kings 17:7-18). The year was 722 B.C. and Israel had not only crossed the line, they stamped on it until it was obliterated. "Nobody's going to tell me what to do!" they must have thought, "Not even God!"

What was it that had such a powerful attraction that they would risk everything? Lots of things: the desire to be more "open" religiously and give a hearty nod towards the gods of their pagan neighbors, their ignorance and plain rebellion against God's revealed will, their willingness to sacrifice their children for the sake of their own selfish prosperity. But they didn't get prosperity in the end, only disillusion, heartbreak, and a boot out of the land God provided for them.

Ancient Israel was not the first group of people to abandon morality for the sake of "fitting in," being more "tolerant," or simply greed for wealth and sensual pleasure. They definitely won't be the last, either. Much of their arrogant rebellion sounds a lot like what's happening in modern America, doesn't it?

The lesson to learn isn't complicated: When God draws a line in the sand, don't cross it. It really is for our own good.

by Max Dawson

In my mind, it is one of the most difficult things to reconcile. How did it happen? How could it possibly happen? I am talking about King Solomon. How did the wisest man in the world mess up so badly? How did a man with such a great beginning have such a terrible ending?

Solomon began as king with the blessing of his father, King David. He was anointed by Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet (I Kings 1:28-37). God's blessing was on the young king. Furthermore, when petitioning God, he asked for an understanding heart so that he might properly judge God's people (I Kings 3:5-15). God granted his request -- and much more! In verse 12 God said, "I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you." Solomon was declared to be the wisest of all men (I Kings 4:29-34).

But in spite of all God had done for him, something wicked happened to his heart. In spite of his amazing construction of the temple, the wise man went astray. (The achievements of King Solomon were indeed amazing. See I Kings 10 for a sample of his greatness.)

He was truly a man of splendid accomplishments. But, when you open chapter eleven, you see a heart that has turned from the Lord (I Kings 11:1-10). He was clearly and plainly disobedient to God. In I Kings 3:1, Solomon took an Egyptian bride and made a treaty with Pharaoh. And then, it was horses and chariots (I Kings 4:26-28). Beyond that, he married many foreign women (I Kings 11:1-3). His marriages, as well as the horses and chariots, were in direct disobedience to the Lord's clear commands (Deuteronomy 17:16-17).

By the end of his reign, this amazingly gifted king had neglected the most basic principle of kingdom leadership! Solomon himself wrote in Proverbs 9:10, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." No man can be truly wise who forgets the fear of the Lord.

Because of this failure, Solomon was no longer a godly man. He first allowed his wives to worship their own gods -- idolatry was not to be permitted in Israel. He built altars for them and eventually participated in pagan practices with them. His love for his wives was greater than his love and devotion for the Lord. His love for spiritual values was lost.

Solomon was a great kingdom leader. But no longer. The kingdom would be torn in two, and Solomon's son, Rehoboam, would only rule over Judah and Benjamin. When God declared that Jeroboam would rule over the other ten tribes, Solomon attempted to kill Jeroboam (I Kings 11:40). Once again, Solomon is seen in opposition to the will of God.

As kingdom leaders, let us never forget the first principle of leadership, indeed, the first principle of wisdom. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." Without reverence for God, and a healthy respect for His wrath, we will fail as leaders. Be wise, my friends. Be wise.
