by Terry Wane Benton

The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil (I Timothy 6:10). We think little of Judas for selling Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. But is Judas worse for being there at the time, while we sell Jesus in other ways? What have we sold him for? A Job that keeps us away from fellowship and communion? Some just have to get away to the lake on the Lord’s Day, making our covetousness more important than fellowship with Him and His people. We cannot make Judas the bad guy when we do similar things. Can we? Yes! Covetousness and materialism overruled the love for Christ in Judas’ case, but have we sold Jesus out for equal or less?

Jesus would not have been crucified except that Judas made a decision that he wanted money more than he wanted Jesus. Covetousness overrules in more hearts than just in Judas. When we don’t want the kingdom of Jesus and His church to be first (Matthew 6:33), and desire material pursuits more, have we not sold Jesus out? Covetousness and materialism often win the heart over Jesus. Our affections should be on things above and not on things of the earth (Colossians 3:1f), but like Judas, we will realize it was not worth the tradeoff. He could not live with himself after he held the money in his hand and really thought about what he had just done.

We, too, will realize we made a foolish trade. We will see ourselves reflected in the foolishness of Judas. Covetousness crucified Jesus. Has that been your value system? Were you there when they crucified the Lord?

by Hugh DeLong

I find it interesting to see the list of commandments that Jesus quoted to the rich young ruler in Mark 10:19: "You know the commandments: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not defraud; honor your father and mother.”

If you compare this short list with the ‘full’ list of the Ten Commandments, you will notice that Jesus did not include ‘covetousness’. Then, after the young man stated that he had kept these from his youth, even until this time.

Jesus responds: "Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, 'One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me'" (Mark 10:21).

This young man walks away, away from eternal life! His worldly possessions were esteemed more valuable than eternal life. We do not know what happened to this young man as his life unfolded. I hope that he later reconsidered.

Then the question: what would I have done? The answer is unsettling as I examine my own heart and life. What if I lost everything? Would I still hold onto my trust in Jesus? What if my house and worldly goods were confiscated by some authority? What if a storm destroyed it all? As you consider this, we need to de-escalate the question and talk not about complete loss, but setbacks. Lose your job? Lose your friends and family? Have health problems that change your whole lifestyle?

I understand this specific command to this specific young man is not a universal requirement for discipleship. People became disciples, and yet some retained riches and property. Others, in fact, did ‘leave all and follow Jesus.’

I thus ask myself another question: Has Jesus changed? Is he my resurrected Lord and King? These setbacks are difficult to handle, but Jesus remains the same. At some point, I will lose all worldly things and relationships, I will die, and take my faith into eternity. Will I hear “well done, faithful servant”? Memorize Jesus' exhortation: “Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10).

by Jeffrey W. Hamilton

I’ve become fascinated by the lists presented in the Bible when I came to realize that many of them are more than a collection of related items. Permit me to illustrate this with a list that Paul gave in Colossians 3.

“Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience, and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them” (Colossians 3:5-7).

Paul had been arguing that those who have become Christians should display a life changed by Christ. Their focus should be on heaven and not on the earth (Colossians 3:2). As a result, they should consider themselves dead to sins.

To illustrate, Paul starts out with the sin of fornication. The NASB poorly translates the Greek word porneia as “immorality.” “Immorality” is far too broad of a term. The word means being engaged in sexual acts with another person where the two people are not married to each other. It would include acts done before marriage or acts of adultery when one person is married to someone else. While the world is losing its moral compass, it is still common to find people who realize that unmarried sexual acts are wrong. Yet, even those who admit that it is wrong will talk about how fornication “just happened to them” at one point. They got caught up in the moment, they didn’t mean for things to go this far, but now they worry that a child might have been conceived.

But it wasn’t a random accident. Things led up to the moment of intercourse. Paul covers that with his next term: impurity or uncleanness (depending on your translation). The term refers to actions that are the opposite of holiness. “For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification” (I Thessalonians 4:7). These are acts that you would not associate with a person who has been set apart by God for a holy purpose. In the realm of sexuality, uncleanness includes actions where two people act like animals, stirring up their desire for sex through inappropriate touching (I Corinthians 7:1). Impure actions naturally lead to fornication because that is how the human body was designed by God. But that design was for it to take place in marriage, not outside of it. “Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body” (I Corinthians 6:13). If your intention is not to engage in fornication, then you must not engage in what leads up to fornication.

Yet, we need to consider why people decide to act without restraint with someone they are not married to. “Passion” refers to lustful things that a person observes that stir up the desire for sex. These can be the things people refer to as their triggers. They might be visual or verbal, such as seeing a part of a person’s body or the attention that another person gives them. These triggers nudge the person into arousal and thinking about sexual things. Because arousal feels good, people get into a habit of seeking out passion, such as looking at pornography, especially in times of stress or depression (I Thessalonians 4:3-7). Passion becomes a distraction but it is also a trap.

Yet, the problem of lust is not just external. It is rooted in an internal desire for sin. “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man” (Mark 7:21-23). The things you accept in your thoughts become the things that you seek out and eventually do. “Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them” (Romans 1:24).

However, Paul takes it one step further. Behind all of these is a very basic problem – greed or covetousness. We usually think of greed as a desire for money or other worldly things, but it can be connected to sex. “You shall not covet your neighbor's wife” (Exodus 20:17). People in the world give themselves over to wanting more and it doesn’t matter how they gain those things. “They, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness” (Ephesians 4:17).

What I want, what I desire, becomes the pivotal point of all my choices. It becomes my god that directs my life. It is my god that I made in my own image.

Thus, we now have the insight to get ourselves and others out of sexual sins. It begins with recognizing that God is in control of my life. I’m here to serve God and not my own desires (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14). I must love God and my neighbor, which means I cannot allow my desires to lead me to harm my neighbor.

Conquer the greed within you and the succeeding steps into sexual sins fall apart.

country, across the road from his aunt and five cousins. He and the boys spent a
good deal of their time hunting in the woods or fishing in the river. One day they
jumped a rabbit that ran into a culvert pipe. The boys got the marvelous idea that if
one entered the pipe from one end, while the other entered from the other, they
could catch the rabbit between them since it would have no way to get around
them. Unfortunately, the rabbit wasn’t the only animal in the pipe. They found a
momma skunk with her six babies in the pipe. They made a hasty retreat, exiting
faster than they had entered. It would have turned out alright, but one of the boys
just couldn’t leave well enough alone. He decided to chase the mother skunk, in
his frustration of losing the rabbit, and give her a kick. She loaned him her perfume
instead.

Answer:

Coveting is wanting to possess what another person has. A similar word to "coveting" is "greed." "For the wicked boasts of his heart's desire, and the greedy man curses and spurns the LORD" (Psalms 10:3). In other words, a covetous man is selfish. Other people do not matter. The only thing that matters is what I want.

Coveting can be a motivation behind stealing, but a person might take what belongs to another for other reasons. A person might steal bread because he is hungry or because he gets a thrill from doing something dangerous. A man might kidnap a person to get revenge against another. Kidnapping is a form of stealing.

At the same time, coveting can be the motivation behind other crimes. A person might commit adultery because he wants another man's wife. Another person might slander a popular politician because he thinks he should be the one the crowds should follow. In a sense, covetousness is a form of idolatry. "Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry" (Colossians 3:5). The covetous man’s god is himself. He worships his own desires and sees himself as the center of the universe. Everything must bow before his desires.

Answer:

Coveteousness is a form of greed where you desire what another person has. It is not seeing someone's car and thinking you would like to save up and buy one like it one day. The covetous wants that person's actual car and is willing to sin to get it.

There is nothing wrong with getting married, God recommends it. It becomes wrong if you are wanting to marry another person's spouse. "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's" (Exodus 20:17).

Question:

Greetings,

I met my fiancée last year and we became friends. We go to the same church. Later we decided to pray and ask God if we should get married and we did get confirmation. So we went to our pastor and told him of our decision. We are planning to get married next year.

We have not been so pure and have committed sexual sins. We acknowledge them as sin before God and we are seeking total deliverance and trusting God for purity until we get married.

There is, however, a problem that I had ignored, but it is starting to concern me. My fiancée had a child several years ago with her prior boyfriend. He was not born again and neither was she. During her pregnancy, he did not support her. Instead, he took to drinking and even did not tell his parents about the child until the child was born. My fiancée's parents never met the father of their grandchild. While they were in a relationship, he abused her and would beat her, so she decided to break the relationship with him.

Later she got born again after going through whatever she went through. She started attending my church early last year and that is where we met. When I proposed to her she had totally ended the relationship with her ex-boyfriend and father to her son. Now, after months of silence, he has realized that she has moved on and that she is on her way to getting married to me. He started calling her and sending her messages begging that she take him back. He says he is sorry and was childish for what he did. He claims to have changed and that he vowed to God that he would marry her or remain single. He is still not yet born again.

My fiancée told him that she has moved on and that he should respect her new relationship. I have been so patient with him and his actions because he is the father to the little child I intend to adopt and raise. She has no desire to go back, and I love her with everything in me. I am planning and preparing to marry her.

Do you think by marrying her I am committing adultery against God? Am I stealing another man's wife? Am I being selfish and covetous? How do I handle this the right way? Will my marrying her mean I have sinned against God? Does her ex have a right to call her his wife simply because they were in a relationship and had sex that led to a child being conceived? I love my girl so much and she loves me too.

Please help me do the right thing before God. Thanks.

Answer:

Sex does not create a marriage. A marriage results from the covenant vows made before God. "Because the LORD has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, with whom you have dealt treacherously; yet she is your companion and your wife by covenant" (Malachi 2:14). See:

Doesn't sex create a marriage?

Can my girlfriend and I get married after committing fornication?

The ex-boyfriend has no claims on your fiancée. The most he could claim is shared right to his child, but to claim that, he would have to commit to paying child support until the child reaches his majority. My guess is that he will not be willing to do this. If he gives you difficulty about adopting the child, just mention this fact and he will likely be willing to sign over his rights.

Still, you have things backward. He is the one who is both selfish and covetous. He had sex with a girl and wanted no obligations. He is the one who wants the woman who is engaged to another man.

Encourage him to become a true Christian, but in this matter, he gave up his chance as a consequence of his sins.

I'm glad you and your fiancée realized you had also sinned when you two also committed fornication. If you find it too hard to stay away from sex before your marriage, then move up the date of your wedding. "But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they remain even as I am; but if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion" (I Corinthians 7:8-9).
