Deuteronomy 14 begins with identity. Everything that follows, including dietary laws and tithing practices, flows from that identity. Israel wasn’t supposed to mimic the nations around them; their distinctiveness was intentional.

The point isn’t about food; it’s about being set apart. God wanted Israel to live in a way that reflected His character and priorities. Their daily habits were supposed to remind them who they belonged to.

We don’t follow the same laws, but the principle still applies. Your identity in God should shape your choices. Not in a performative way, but in a consistent way. The way you spend, speak, work, and respond should reflect who you belong to.

Deuteronomy 14 pushes us to consider whether our daily patterns match our identity. Holiness isn’t about being impressive; it’s about being aligned with God.

We’ve been told Christ’s church is God’s household (I Timothy 3:15). Usually, when we read that metaphor, we think of the people involved in a household. But in II Timothy 2:20-26, Paul thinks about dishes. The fine China versus the Tupperware.

In every great house, Paul says, some of the dishes are for honorable use. The gold and silver vessels aren’t used to slop the hogs or feed the dogs. Then there are the vessels for dishonorable use. We don’t set the wood and clay bowls before the visiting dignitaries.

We each need to view ourselves as a vessel in God’s house. Will we be set apart for honorable use? Or are we satisfied as dishonorable? Do we want to be ready for every good work? Or are we satisfied being passed over because we aren’t useful?

Paul gives Timothy three steps to be honorably useful to the Lord in His house (II Timothy 2:22).

Flee youthful passions.

Pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace.

Along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

Don’t just hinder the immature passions; flee them. Run from them as hard as you can. I’ve often wondered why he called them youthful passions instead of sinful passions. I don’t fully know. But my best guess is not that only young people want these passions. Plenty of old people struggle with sinful passions. Rather, in youth and immaturity, we impulsively pursue passions without thinking through the consequences. We need to flee that impulsive behavior.

Don’t just dabble in the character of the Lord; pursue it. Chase it down. Make it yours. In this passage, Paul specifies righteousness, faith, love, and peace. Read this as “part for the whole.” He’s not giving an exhaustive list, but a representative one. Chase things like these. Don’t just think about them. Chase them.

Finally, and this is perhaps the most important step, don’t try to do either alone. Find others who are fleeing and pursuing. Flee and pursue with them. Our friends matter. Fleeing and pursuing is exhausting work. No matter how disciplined and diligent we are, we all get tired at times. We need others around us to encourage us and lift us up when we fall. We won’t become useful to the Lord on our own.

Let’s be useful to the Lord. Let’s do this together. What can we do to help you be useful to the Lord?

Paul wrote: “Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed, to malign no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing every consideration for all men” (Titus 3:1-2).

To be a disciple of Jesus, we must live our lives according to His teaching. Not all of His teaching is easy, mainly because it differs from what we had become before our conversion. We learned our lifestyle, and now He wants us to change – to be transformed, to be renewed in our thinking. This change in our thinking has to come first, and then it changes how we live.

In our American life today, it seems to me that there simply is more animosity, strife, hatred, factualism, etc. than in our recent past. Such modern lifestyle is opposed to how we are taught to live as disciples.

Malign No One

The word here in Greek is blasphemy – which is to slander, defame, or speak abusively/injuriously about (or to) a person. Notice how broad the application is: to no one. Then we join social media and that is the predominant content of postings. Such is in the titles of YouTube videos, and it makes up the headlines of news articles. With all of this influence, it is easy for us to join in.

Be Peaceable

Again, our self-centered mindset seeks out only those who agree with us and ‘declare war’ on those who disagree. This leaves us struggling with how to go ahead and disagree while remaining peaceable. How do we contend for the truth without becoming contentious?

Be Gentle

This is variably translated ‘reasonable’, ‘forbearing’, or ‘yeilding’. At its foundation is the ability to give up ‘my rights’ for the greater good of someone else.

Showing All Consideration for All Men

"Treat others as you would have them treat you”- thus said Jesus.

Just these four instructions show the radical difference of how disciples ought to live and how people actually conduct themselves. It doesn’t have to be this way with you. You are different. You have been sanctified, that is, ‘set apart’ as a servant of God. You have not learned Christ this way. This is between you and the Lord. Are you molding your life according to His instructions?

Why wouldn't I, if I am thinking right? I am "elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father" (I Peter 1:2). God's elect are "his own special people" (I Peter 2:9). Everyone is not chosen. Many are called, but few are chosen (Matthew 20:16).

If you are among the elect, you have been "sanctified by the Spirit," which means you were set apart from the rest of the world by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit does this through the "truth" He revealed (John 17:17). The gospel is the means by which the Spirit sets us apart from the others (Romans 1:16; I Peter 1:12,22). The obedient believers have been "sprinkled" with the blood of Christ (I Peter 1:2). This is the means of clearing our conscience of the guilt of a sinful past, washing us clean.

Cleansed, sanctified, and obedient people are to God the most special people. He lavishes the elect with "every spiritual blessing in Christ" (Ephesians 1:3ff). He adopts us into His family and has a very special "inheritance" reserved for us in heaven (I Peter 1:3-4). Jesus "loved me and gave Himself for me" (Galatians 2:20f).

Why would Christians not feel very special if they are thinking right? Are you thinking right?

by Steve Klein
via Biblical Insights, Vol. 14 No. 8, August 2014

In John 3:1-7, Jesus told Nicodemus,

“Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

“Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”

“You must be born again.”

For centuries, virtually everyone who read Jesus’ words here understood that “water” referred to baptism. And then John Calvin came along in the 16th century. His admittedly “new” interpretation muddied the water! Even so, many denominational scholars and Calvinists acknowledge that “water” in this text is an obvious reference to baptism:

Presbyterian scholar Albert Barnes wrote, “By water, here, is evidently signified baptism.” (Barnes ’Notes)

Methodist scholar Adam Clarke said, “Baptism by water, into the Christian faith, was necessary to every Jew and Gentile that entered into the kingdom of the Messiah.” (Commentary on John)

Anglican priest William Wall observed concerning Jesus’ reference to “water” in John 3 that, “There is not any one Christian writer of any antiquity in any language but what understands it of baptism....I believe Calvin was the first that ever denied this place to mean baptism. He gives it another interpretation, which he confesses to be new.” (History of Infant Baptism)

The book of Acts repeatedly shows that baptism in water initiated believers into their new life in Christ (Acts 8:36-39; 10:47; cf. 2:38; 8:12; 16:12,33; 18:8; 19:4-5; 22:16).

Despite these facts, many claim to have been born again without water! My grandmother would sometimes complain when she heard the claims that thousands were being born again in Billy Graham crusades by merely praying the sinner’s prayer; she would shake her head and wonder aloud how anyone could think they had been born again “without a drop of water.” Jesus’ description of the new birth should cause all of us to wonder the same thing.

But there is much more to the new birth than baptism. Water baptism is the outward act of faith necessary to be born again, but the regeneration is inward. A person who is born again is a new creature; every perspective and relationship is changed (II Corinthians 5:14-17). He walks “in newness of life” (Romans 6:4).

In John’s first epistle, the inspired apostle describes the new life that is lived by those who have been born again. Four things characterize this new life.

Those who are born of God practice righteousness.

I John 2:29 says, “If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.” What distinguishes a child of God from a child of the devil is that a child of God practices what is right (I John 3:10). A child of God does the will of His Father, seeks to please His Father, and generally imitates His Father (cf. Ephesians 5:1).

Those who are born of God do not practice sin.

“Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God” (I John 3:9). Sin here refers to one’s walk or habit. God’s children know that continuing in sin would grieve God’s Spirit, so we just don’t want to do it (cf. Ephesians 4:30; I John 5:18).

Those who are born of God love their Father and their family.

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God” (I John 4:7, cf. 5:1). Being born again brings you into a loving family. Family love is special. It transcends all other relationships. Your changed life results in changed affections.

Those who are born of God overcome the world.

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith” (I John 5:4). There’s a battle to fight, but those who have been born again can win it through faith. Picture two men. One is born of God, and the other is a worldly man. Physically, there is little or no difference. They are living in exactly the same physical world with the same temptations surrounding them. However, there is a substantial difference between their lives. One is continually beaten by this world - he loses in temptation and in trial, and he has no real concept of his life’s eternal significance. The other, who had the faith to be born again, has the faith to trust God at every turn. It may not be seen or understood by the world, but he is living a victorious life (Colossians 3:1-3; John 3:8).

The new birth begins the process of growing to be like Christ. Being born of God is not merely the moment you begin to call yourself a Christian, but the moment you begin to become Christ-like. Living life as a son leads to eternal life in the Son. “And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son” (I John 5:11).

July 29, 2017, marks 40 years since my dad immersed me in Christ at the Church of Christ in New Philadelphia, Ohio. My dad was the first to congratulate me, then Ralph Miller, and then other brothers and sisters in Christ who assembled that Friday afternoon. The church on Commercial Avenue remains dear to my heart, even though we had lived in several places prior and would have several more to follow. Hopefully, without sounding pretentious, I would like to share some thoughts I have been reflecting upon.

The Plan of Salvation Is Easy to Understand

Some have made the plan of salvation confusing by their misplaced emphasis on grace (alone) or faith (alone), but the plan of salvation is not difficult to understand if one reads the New Testament. Being a preacher’s son, I knew the plan of salvation from a very young age. I could draw the “steps,” give you “book-chapter-verse” for each one, and quote each passage from the KJV. Before I became a Christian, I could name all the books of the Bible and more through the fortification of my mother’s instruction, too. It seems that some have trouble knowing what to do because their minds have been cluttered with various teachings and concepts of men. Yet, an honest reading of the Book of Acts will remove that clutter! Never be ashamed of taking time to explain to others the steps they need to take to have eternal salvation, and never shame someone for taking the time to do so either.

Avoidance of Hell Is Motivational

I have heard some say that preaching about Hell is not only unpopular but also an improper form of motivation. There is an old country term for that theory—hogwash. Should we be motivated by God’s love? Absolutely. However, different things motivate people at different times. I have no problem admitting that a healthy dose of fear of the second death provided me with additional motivation to obey the Gospel. Perhaps some fail to realize that Jesus preached and warned about Hell more than anyone else in the Bible. The writer of Hebrews certainly believed in this warning. “For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries” (Hebrews 10:26-27 NKJV). Will the desire to avoid Hell motivate someone during their complete Christian walk? Maybe not all the time, but it would be unwise to dismiss this motivational force on those who may need to come to their senses about the spiritual condition of their souls.

Deciding to Be Baptized Is Not Exactly Easy

Now, I just said that learning the plan of salvation was easy; however, making the decision to be baptized was another matter. Some may say, “You’re a preacher’s kid. It had to be easy,” but they would be mistaken. Did my parents want me to become a Christian? Absolutely, but they did not want to make that decision for me. They respected that it was my decision. When I made the decision, I did not know how to tell my mother (not to mention my father). She knew something serious was on my mind, and eventually I was able to tell her. She was excited. I told her I did not know how to tell Dad. She asked if I thought he would not be excited. I assured her I did, but I just did not know how to broach the subject. She told me to go to his office (which was across the breezeway to the church building), and she would call him and tell him I was on my way to talk with him about being baptized. It may sound rather silly, but remember several dynamics were in play here. I was ready to become a child of God, but I was also still a young person in the care of my parents. Be patient with your children and let them make the decision.

Staying Faithful Can Be Easy If You Keep Your Decision

Do not underestimate the power of making a decision on one’s ability to remain faithful. We never had a discussion in our house about whether we would attend evening worship services or midweek Bible study. Some may be tempted to say, “Your father was a preacher, so you had no choice but to come.” (Such comments may reveal an unhealthy view of preachers and their families.) When my wife and I were married, I worked in the business world. Even then, my wife and I did not discuss whether we would attend services. Why? Because we had both made that decision back when we became Christians. Making a decision and making it with commitment is a powerful force to remaining faithful when difficult days come, and difficult days will come.

Becoming Unfaithful Can Be Easy If You Allow It to Happen

The writer of Hebrews stated, “Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away” (Hebrews 2:1). The word for “drift away” includes the idea of slipping away or getting away from us. Such is easy to do if you allow it. How? Well, everyone has demands on his or her time, even teenagers. For me, I allowed school and work, and the circles of friends from these two areas, to crowd out service to the Lord and to the circle of Christians. I allowed Christianity to be crowded out by things that were not bad, but which left little room for faith. The more faith was crowded out, the further I slipped away. When I graduated from Centralia High School, I just let work dominate my schedule. Soon, I had other commitments, other friends, and other things to do. I had not exactly forgotten, but like a boat that is slowly moving away from shore and out of my reach, I was allowing the important matters, the eternal matters, to slip away.

The Church Is a Perfect Institution Made Up of Imperfect People

This is a phrase my father taught us. My parents tried to shield us from what some call “church politics,” but some matters are impossible to protect against. Sometimes we are not as careful about our interactions with one another as we ought to be. We may be unaware that, as my parents often said, “Little ears are listening.” We need to be more careful in emphasizing the perfection of the church by minimizing our view of one another's imperfections (Proverbs 10:12). If you think children are not watching and listening, you are gravely mistaken. It could be one of the reasons that children leave the church and want nothing more to do with it—we have overshadowed the perfect with our imperfections.

Christians Help Christians Grow

My parents so much wanted me to go to Freed-Hardeman College. They knew I was having difficulty, and I knew I was, too. Yet, I just did not know what to do about my future. I kept on pushing aside the question, “Why don’t you go to FHC and find what you want to do there?” Dad even came back from the Bible Lectureship and told me that President E. Claude Gardner, whom I had never met and did not know, said I could come to FHC and they would find a way to make it possible. Finally, after several weeks, my mother asked me, “Do you have anything better in mind?” I did not, so I agreed to go. It was the place I needed. I was able to find a Christian wife and make lifelong Christian friends. I developed skills I would need in the business world, and I also saw Christianity in a new light. I saw a depth to Christianity that I had underestimated. It was not that my parents did not teach me; it was just that I allowed peers to cloud my vision. When I had a new set of peers, Christians, my perspective changed. It is sad that parents say they are willing to do anything for their children except when the tuition bill comes due. Parents sometimes make the mistake of prioritizing price over value in Christian education, and by the time they realize it, it is too late. Thankfully, my parents did not make that mistake.

How Can I Not Preach the Gospel and Serve the Lord?

I have had a “career of careers.” One of the reasons I did not want to preach was all the relocations our family had experienced. So, I decided to major in management. Wanting to be a preacher, just like my father, my whole life was a difficult matter when I decided otherwise because of circumstances outside of my father’s control. What I found was that I was still overworked, laid off, misrepresented, displaced due to corporate relocations, nearly fired for doing the right thing, and more. While this was going on, I noticed the church was struggling, and I just could not stand by and do nothing. Don’t take this wrong. I do not consider myself any kind of “Champion to the Cause.” I just know that I am somebody, and as somebody I can do something. My wife and I decided it was time to do what we could to advance Christianity in our part of the world. Many may accomplish more than we have, but sadly, there will be many who never try. We are trying, and it has made a difference to ourselves and to our children. Am I saying one has to become a full-time minister to serve in the kingdom? No, but one has to serve where he is. Are you serving where you are? Service matters—not only for others but for you too!

Forty years as a Christian! Saying it sounds impossible! I can honestly say I have never regretted that decision. I may not have been consistent. I certainly had my share of mistakes. However, looking at the lives of others outside of Christ has shown me how important it is to have life with Christ.
