You get out of a sermon or Bible lesson what you put into it. This is illustrated by two groups of people toward the same preacher. The first group was from Corinth. They were not “open” to Paul (II Corinthians 6:11-13) and justified their lack of interest in anything he said by ridiculing anything they could, even dismissing him as an apostle. There was carnality, spiritual immaturity (I Corinthians 3:1f) at the heart of why they chose to be cold and unaccepting of him. These brethren could have been made spiritually rich by Paul if they had taken a different attitude toward God, His word, and their brother in Christ. Corinth had members who lost a great spiritual opportunity for growth and unity simply by not opening their hearts to love Paul and respect the word of God he was preaching.

The second group heard Paul, but with a different attitude. To the Thessalonians, Paul wrote: “For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe” (I Thessalonians 2:13). The same man, same style, same message, but two completely different responses. The first group is not open and treats his word as that of a mere man instead of the precious word of God. They missed out on a great opportunity to learn from an apostle of Jesus Christ. The second group was open and treated Paul's words with great respect, recognizing that he was preaching the word of God. This allowed his preaching to work effectively in them. The difference was all in the attitude they brought to the table when Paul preached the word of God. James said this problem can be solved. “Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls” (James 1:21). The attitude one brings makes all the difference as to what you get out of sermons and Bible classes.

"Blessed is the man whose strength is in You, whose heart is set on pilgrimage" (Psalms 84:5 NKJV).

Two things show us a truly "blessed" man. No! It is not his money, his political power, or his fame.

A truly blessed man:

Finds his strength to keep going in God, and

has his heart set on pilgrimage.

What does that mean? It means that he sees life here as a mere journey toward a desired goal or destiny. This man's destiny is not this world! He sees challenges for the journey, but nothing he and God can't handle together.

The truly blessed man learns to tap into the special inner strength that only God can supply. When the journey seems wearisome, his hope for that final homeland drives him onward, and he finds that God's grace is truly sufficient to re-energize him.

He keeps hearing the Spirit say, "Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth." (Colossians 3:1f). Don't be so shortsighted that your major concerns revolve around your present situation.

Pilgrims have a powerful, driving kind of hope, and that keeps them truly blessed. They know where they are going in this world and what their mission is for each day! Are you one of the truly blessed kind?

Introduction:

Temperament shapes conduct: For example, a person with a naturally calm temperament is less likely to exhibit aggressive conduct, while someone with a highly reactive temperament may show impulsive or intense behaviors.

Conduct reflects temperament – but not perfectly: External influences (social norms, upbringing, stress) can modify how temperament manifests in conduct. A naturally introverted person might learn to act extroverted in professional settings.

Moderating factors: Emotional regulation, cognitive control, and social learning can weaken or strengthen the link between temperament and conduct.

What are some common temperaments between men and women?

Personality psychology suggests that men and women share many common temperamental traits, though their expression can vary. These are some widely observed temperaments that both genders often exhibit:

Sociability

Emotional Reactivity

Adaptability

Activity Level

Persistence

How we react in these temperaments makes or breaks acceptable godly conduct.

First, let’s examine what is considered godly conduct. Godly conduct refers to behavior aligned with virtues such as:

Humility

Patience

Self-control

Kindness

Integrity

Love & forgiveness

Temperament is neutral by itself – it’s how we manage it that determines whether conduct is godly or ungodly. For example:

Temperament Trait

Potential Godly Expression

Potential Ungodly Expression

Impulsivity

Quick to help, generous, enthusiastic in service.

Rash decisions, anger outbursts, lack of self-control.

Patience

Endurance in trials, calm under pressure.

Passive avoidance, enabling wrongdoing.

Assertiveness

Courage to speak truth, defend justice.

Pride, domination, harshness.

Emotional Reactivity

Compassion, empathy, and deep care for others.

Overreaction, bitterness, grudges.

Sociability

Fellowship, hospitality, building community.

Gossip, seeking approval over truth.

Makes: When temperament is submitted to moral and spiritual principles, it becomes a strength (e.g., assertiveness used for justice).

Breaks: When temperament is unchecked or self-centered, it leads to ungodly behavior (e.g., impulsivity leading to sin).

So, how do we transform temperament into godly conduct that is pleasing to the Father?

First, we must be honest about and recognize our temperament.

2 Corinthians 13:5; Romans 12:3; Psalm 139:23-24 – Awareness is the first step to transformation

John 18:10 – Peter was naturally impulsive. Recognizing this helped him later become bold for Christ in Acts.

Second, we must pray for guidance and surrender our natural tendencies to God – “How would God want me to express or react to this or that?”

Luke 9:23-25 – We all experienced a repentance that led to a conversion into Christianity. How does our belief in the grace of God and His higher expectations for our lives shape us into the Christian He has called us to be?

Romans 12:1-2 – Present body as a living sacrifice

Third, we must apply biblical virtues to our temperament

Temperament

Godly Transformation

Biblical Example

Impulsivity

Self-control, wisdom

Peter learns restraint (Acts 4:13)

Assertiveness

Courage with humility

Paul speaks truth boldly yet lovingly (Eph. 4:15)

Emotional Reactivity

Compassion, forgiveness

Joseph forgives his brothers (Gen. 50:20)

Patience

Endurance in trials

Job remains faithful despite suffering (Job 1:21)

Fourth, we must be courageous about guarding against ungodly expressions.

Proverbs 4:23; 2 Timothy 1:7; Psalm 141:3-5 – What ‘triggers’ you? – Learn them vs. simply react to them and set boundaries.

Proverbs 16:32 – “Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.”

Finally, we must seek out accountability partnerships – mentors, faith leaders, and truly devoted friends who will tell you when you’re behaving ungodly – and own your new and improved godly temperament!

Proverbs 13:20; 1 Corinthians 15:33 – Mind the company you keep and surround yourself with good and godly people.

Acts 11:23-24 – Barnabas encouraged Paul and others.

Personal Temperament-to-Godly Conduct Action Plan

Step 1: Identify Your Temperament

Which traits describe you most? (Check all that apply)

☐ Impulsive

☐ Assertive

☐ Emotional

☐ Sociable

☐ Other: ___________

Step 2: Recognize Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths of this temperament:

Challenges or ungodly tendencies:

Step 3: Align with Godly Virtues

Impulsivity

Self-control (Galatians 5:23)

Patience

Endurance (James 1:4)

You don’t want to get in a pattern of negativity that slowly drowns your mind in depression. So, what can you do?

Turn off the negative input for a while. This can be the constant negative news on TV and social media, or it can be patterns of feeling sorry for yourself. Regardless of the negative pattern, you must redirect your thought pattern and nourish your mind and heart with positive things. Paul gave a list in Philippians 4. Think on these things.

Stay busy thinking of constructive things you can do to feel a sense of accomplishment. Make a list of things you have wanted to do. Set that list in front of you and begin one project at a time, accomplishing something each day that you have wanted to do. It can be in the yard, in the house, or even away from the house, helping someone else.

Most importantly, start your day by reading the Bible, meditating, and praying. In prayer, make a list of things for which you are thankful. Thanksgiving is key to changing negative thinking. It is hard to truly be grateful and throw a pity party at the same time.

Cast out thoughts of criticism of others and ask yourself if you are really being better than the people of whom you are critical? Pray to grow in thanksgiving, love, and industriousness. Ask forgiveness for being too critical of others, for being ungrateful, and for wasting mental energy on so much negativity that it robs us of the joy we should have in Christ.

Thinking on these things and putting them into action will make a remarkable difference. Rejoice in the Lord always! (Philippians 4:4). That is a command! Give proper attention!

What's in Your Heart?

The ark of the covenant in Israel was symbolic. It represented the presence of the glory of God, was kept in the center of the Israelite camp, and symbolized the covenant of Jesus Christ. It was important to keep it protected from enemies. When the Philistines had captured the ark of the covenant, the glory had departed from Israel.

In I Samuel 4, the story is told of the death of Eli, one of Eli's sons (Phineas), and Phineas' wife, about to die in childbirth. Of all the bad news, hearing that the ark of the covenant was taken away was so bad that just before she died, she named her boy "Ichabod," which means "the glory has departed."

She could bear the death of her father-in-law, her husband, and herself, but the worst news was that the Philistines took the glory of God's presence. We have the valuable treasure inside our hearts in the gospel of Christ. We have a better covenant with better blessings and promises. But has the world successfully captured our glory in Christ? Have we allowed the world to come in and rob our hearts? Has the glory and the treasures of the gospel now become so small and insignificant, fading away into the distance?

Will our children learn from us that "the glory has departed?" Or, will we recapture the meaning of the cross and Jesus' resurrection? Will we "carry about in the body" (image of carrying about the ark of the covenant) the dying of the Lord Jesus, so that none of the bad things in life can even come close to touching our real treasure in the heart?

What are you carrying in your heart? Has the world taken the glory of Christ away from your heart? Has the glory departed? Would Christ label you "Ichabod?" Isn't this the time for the church of Christ to shine because the glory is still exciting and illuminating our hearts? What is in your heart? If the glory of Christ is gone, we must recapture it. We will be gathering around the real glory, Jesus, this morning. Will you be there? Or are you another case of Ichabod?

by Terry Wane Benton

First Peter is a wonderful, inspired book with about 10-11 “be” admonitions buzzing around throughout it.

Be sober (I Peter 1:13; 5:8) calls upon us to be clearheaded and unimpeded in our focus on our spiritual and eternal mission. Needless to say, people choose to impair clear thinking with alcohol, drugs, prejudice, or even undiscerning and worldly thinking. We need to be sober people!

Be holy (I Peter 1:15). This means being separate from the world and righteous like God. We must ensure we are transformed and don’t conform to the world (Romans 12:1-4).

Be submissive (I Peter 3:1; 5:5). This means we are ready to yield to all that is honorable and shows honor to others. We are not control freaks and pushy people. This characteristic is beautiful and attractive. We should not be known for a self-centered “me first” attitude. Humility is not being weak and walked on, but being willing to honor others where honor is due. Be submissive. It shows you respect others! To be respected, we must show how it should be displayed!

Be tenderhearted (I Peter 3:8). Tender in heart means feeling compassion for others, putting yourself in their circumstances, and having a heart of empathy. Everyone carries burdens and challenges. Are you cold and indifferent? Can you feel for others?

These are four admonitions on how we need to “be” in character: Be sober, holy, submissive, and tenderhearted. Of all the goals we might have in this life, these are the ones we need to focus our energy on and bring into our state of being. Are we known for these things? Move them from the book into the mind, mindset, and character of how to live.

Scanning the book of I Peter for more "Be" admonitions gracing the book, we are challenged regarding our greater influence and usefulness in God's house. Here are a few more:

Be Courteous (I Peter 3:8). Courtesy costs us nothing, but it is much better than coldness, self-centeredness, and indifference to other human beings made in God’s image and who could use a little thoughtful kindness. Think of the small things that you can do, such as lending a helping hand or just speaking to someone. Most people can appreciate courtesy! Open a door, let someone in your lane, give a generous tip, say “good morning” or “have a blessed day.” Be courteous! God can use a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple to open a door for the Word!

Be Ready to Give an Answer (I Peter 3:15). The more you are prepared to give a reason for your hope with meekness and fear, the more you grow, and the deeper and richer you become, and you become a channel of blessing to some poor soul living aimlessly and hopelessly. This takes studying to "show yourself approve unto God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, handling aright the word of truth" (II Timothy 2:15).

Be Serious (I Peter 4:7). We see people who are too serious about sports and not nearly serious enough about their faith in Jesus. The one thing that should stand out is that we hold faith in Jesus in all seriousness. We believe this life and the next depends on the quality and depth of our faith in Him. Be serious about growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Your soul and the souls of your loved ones depend on how serious you really are.

Be Hospitable (I Peter 4:9). The word is akin to “hospital," a place of care and service to people with physical needs. We can be smaller versions of care for people’s needs in other ways, especially in the care for their heart (center of their mental being). We are to be emotional burden lifters and soul rescuers. We see beneath the physical appearance a person with inward struggles. Hospitality means we become resources for inner encouragement and strength. We care, so we take care to offer time and an ear. It can be at our place or take someone out to eat. Hospital care places for people’s inner needs is what we need to “be”!

Be Clothed with Humility (I Peter 5:5). Humility decorates you. It protects you from attitudes and actions of pride and arrogance and that condescending, stuck-up air of superiority that repels people. Humility makes you seem approachable and safe to be around when all another person seeks is a kind reception. We need to exalt others over ourselves. This is beautiful clothing for the spirit of anyone.

Do you remember being shunned by people who seemed clothed with a false sense of superiority? They were clothed with pride, and it was repulsive. You remember those feelings to this day. But you also remember people clothed with humility, which made them accessible for help and friendship. We need this clothing of the spirit we want to possess.

Be Vigilant (I Peter 5:8). Be careful, watchful for dangers, and alert to opportunities you will seize immediately. We must be on the lookout for dangers of the soul, dangers to our priorities and moral principles, and golden opportunities to step in and lead someone to Christ, teaching them the good news, the gospel of Christ. Vigilance should be a characteristic that stands out about us. Too many lost opportunities are due to not being vigilant.

I would close these points with one more. It is making all of the other ten “be” admonitions a discipline so that we can “Be Glad” when His glory is revealed (I Peter 4:13). He will be revealed one day. If we work to the end of being ready when He is revealed, we will be purifying our souls (I John 3:1-3) in that hope. We will be so glad when He is revealed. We will be ready to see Him as He is and ready to hear Him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant! Enter into the joy of your Lord!” We purify our attitudes, our behavior, our character so that there is no regret. We want this “Be” to drive all the other “Be” admonitions into our mindset until it clothes us and becomes our character. Be glad at the end because you labored diligently with these bees!

was listening to his students as they presented oral readings. When one
young man rose to begin his recitation, he held his book in the wrong
hand. The professor thundered, ‘Take your book in your right hand, and be
seated!’ At this harsh rebuke, the student held up his right arm. He didn’t
have a right hand! The other students shifted uneasily in their chairs. For
a moment the professor hesitated. Then he made his way to the student,
put his arm around him, and with tears streaming from his eyes, said ‘I
never knew about it. Please, will you forgive me?’ His humble apology
made a lasting impact on that young man. This story was told some time
later in a large gathering of believers. At the close of the meeting a man
came forward, turned to the crowd and raised his right arm. It ended at the
wrist. He said, ‘I was that student. Professor Blackie led me to Christ.
But he never could have done it if he had not made the wrong right.’”

immediately discovers everything is in a mess – weeds flourishing in the flower
beds, windows broken across the front of the building, the gal at the front desk
dozing, loud music roaring from several offices. Instead of making a profit, the
business suffered a great loss. Without hesitation he calls everyone together and
with a frown asks, “What happened? Didn’t you get my letters?” You say, “Oh
