by Luiz Felipe Lima De Albuquerque

Thesis: When we make room for sin and other gods, we grow distant from God and lose our identity.

"And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?

Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you" (Judges 2:1–3 KJV).

Thesis

The message I want to bring to you is this: when we do not remove sin today, we grow distant from God, we lose our identity, and we create a problem for our tomorrow.

Context

The book of Judges is a true study of humanity:

Israel had finally arrived in the promised land, and after the death of Joshua, the tribe of

Judah takes the lead and must lead the expulsion of the other nations;

Israel allows the other nations to remain and enters a vicious cycle of corruption, judgment, and purification: it falls into sin, is oppressed, cries out for mercy, and God sends a judge to lead a revolt;

The cycle of corruption repeats itself until Israel becomes corrupt enough to sound just like Sodom, and is completely lost.

In this passage, God reminds Israel where they came from and calls the people to account for their disobedience.

And it was not a rebuke for lacking the strength to win: the people chose to let those who should have been driven out remain.

In the end, He says that the peoples who were not driven out will be thorns in their sides, and their gods will be snares — traps.

But what do the thorns and the snares mean?

Thorns

"But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell" (Numbers 33:55 KJV).

When God speaks of thorns, He gives us an image of ongoing punishment, of continual pain:

Israel's lack of discipline and firmness caused more problems than the ones they were trying to avoid: sparing the other nations of Canaan only brought oppression, loss of identity, and moral decay.

One example is the Midianites in the days of Gideon, who constantly destroyed the Israelites' crops and forced them to hide in caves. Gideon himself had to prepare his food in secret.

Another example is the time of Deborah and Barak, when Jabin (king of Canaan) and his commander Sisera are mentioned — and Scripture itself says they were exceedingly cruel and violent.

To make matters worse, even their descendants had to deal with what was left of these nations afterward, as with Saul, David, and Solomon.

The evil they allowed to coexist with them became a recurring problem that even their descendants inherited, without any need for it. They did not have to go through that.

But why did leaving these peoples become such a serious problem?

"And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel." (Judges 2:10 KJV).

Because of this permissiveness and this lax attitude, the people of Israel were gradually losing their identity:

Later generations were lost because they lacked knowledge of their own history;

They also had no relationship with God, and intermarried with the other peoples, giving their children in marriage to the daughters of the nations of Canaan;

One example of this is Samson — a great warrior, yet defeated by the hand of Delilah.

And what do we — Christians — have to do with such an ancient story?

"Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves" (Matthew 10:16 KJV).

Just as Israel was God's kingdom in the past, we Christians are the kingdom of God in the present:

We are under the jurisdiction of Jesus Christ, and just like the people of Israel, we need to be watchful of the wolves of our own time;

While Israel was called to physically drive out the peoples of Canaan, we need to drive out:

The devil, who looks for opportunities in our weaknesses (Ephesians 4);

False prophets and false teachers, who teach lies (II Peter 2);

False brothers, who claim to be Christians but do not truly obey God (I Corinthians 5);

And most important of all: the very evil that we ourselves must reject (I Thessalonians 5).

Notice that, just as allowing the other nations to remain destroyed Israel's identity, allowing these enemies to remain will destroy our identity as the Church of Christ. If I do not do what Christ says, whose church am I?

We need to ask ourselves: what have we allowed to remain in the church without doing anything about it? Which enemies of God have we allowed into our midst, or into our own lives?

The evil we do not remove today becomes a problem for us tomorrow.

Snares

It's worth noticing that when God speaks of the gods of Canaan, He describes them as bait attached to a trap:

In other words, the people of Israel would struggle with these false gods precisely because they would be attractive.

Baal (Hadad), Asherah, Chemosh, Dagon, and the rest promised fertility, prosperity, and riches — but in the end, as we see, they only deformed Israel further.

And it's remarkable how much this caused Israel to lose its own identity:

One example is Micah, of the tribe of Ephraim, who stole from his own mother (and she blessed him for it), kept idols in his house, and paid a Levite to serve as his "personal priest," believing God would bless him because of it.

Another horrifying example is the men of Gibeah (tribe of Benjamin), who threatened to abuse a Levite — and whose words sound eerily familiar:

"Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him" (Judges 19:22 KJV).

In case that scene sounds familiar, let's go back to Genesis 19…

"And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may know them" (Genesis 19:5 KJV).

The gods of Canaan corrupted the people of Israel so thoroughly that they sounded exactly like the people of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Although the tribe of Benjamin was not completely wiped out, the other tribes nearly exterminated it.

But why did allowing these gods become such a problem?

"And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel. And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim: And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger" (Judges 2:10-12 KJV).

In other words, Israel failed to teach the generations that came after!

The later generations lacked sufficient knowledge of God and of the history their ancestors had lived through;

One generation's negligence became the next generation's rebellion.

And God had warned about exactly this in the past!

"And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not, And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage" (Deuteronomy 6:5-12 KJV).

The earlier generations are responsible for teaching the ones who come after:

Parents should not simply tell their children to read the Bible: they should talk about it together, model right conduct, and shape the home so that the Word of God is constantly kept in view;

And beyond that, they should remember that every achievement they had was given to them by God.

Somewhere along the way, one generation failed the next.

And what do we — Christians — have to do with this loss of identity? And what do we have to do with false gods?

"For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was" (James 1:23-24 KJV).

It doesn't matter how much we know about the Word, or how much history our congregation has: if we don't do what the Word says, we will begin to lose ourselves.

We need to remember where we came from and what God has done for us;

And we cannot forget that what He says must be our priority.

The worst part is that when we begin to lose ourselves, new idols — new false gods — are waiting for us:

"Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry" (Colossians 3:5 KJV).

When I give myself to sexual immorality, impurity, disordered desire, greed for money, pleasure, or power, I am already committing idolatry. Instead of Baal (Hadad), Asherah, Chemosh, or Dagon, I have abandoned God to serve myself.

In the end, our new false gods are our own desires.

When I choose to follow a wrong desire and put God in second place, I am already losing my identity as a Christian and becoming exactly what these false gods want me to become.

Just as Israel forgot its history and went off to worship other gods, letting sin go on making its home in us will destroy our identity as the Church of Christ as well. If we worship ourselves, whose church are we?

We need to ask ourselves: have we kept our history with God alive? Has He truly been the priority in our lives? Have we passed this on to the ones coming up behind us?

When we do not remove sin today, we grow distant from God, we lose our identity, and we create a problem for our tomorrow.

Conclusion

The book of Judges ends with Israel completely unrecognizable and lost:

The people who had once been God's chosen people neglected their mission and allowed their enemies to live among them;

They also failed to pass on their history with God and what they had learned, and the generations that followed became so lost that they were unrecognizable.

We need to walk the opposite path:

We need to fight whatever forces oppose God;

We need to be firm and do exactly what the Lord has commanded us in His Word;

We need to pass on both our knowledge and our history with the Father, so that the coming generations will know of His care for us, and that our victories were given to us by Him.

May God bless us.

When I started working in the college cafeteria, two things bothered me: the heat of the freshly washed dishes I stacked, and the high-decibel noise of the kitchen. Soon my hands adjusted to the heat, and my ears to the racket. I got used to it.

Getting used to evil?

As our society is daily bombarded with increasing profanity, violence, and sensual entertainment, have we become desensitized? Sins that were once deplored in our society are now not simply tolerated, but even promoted with abandon. What once shocked is now “the new norm.”

“Were they ashamed because of the abomination they have done?
They were not even ashamed at all;
They did not even know how to blush” (Jeremiah 6:15).

A blush-proof society is ripe for judgment.

Little by Little

Gradual exposure by degrees is one of Satan’s most effective ploys (I Corinthians 15:33).

For all his faults, at least Lot was “oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men (for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds)” (II Peter 2:7-8). Lot never acclimated to the society around him.

Have we?

by Donald Townsley
via Sentry Magazine, Vol. 21 No. 3, September 1995

In ancient history, the Greeks besieged the city of Troy for 10 years. Unable to take the city by force, they devised a plan to capture it by strategy. They built a large wooden horse, filled it with soldiers, and, under the guise of ending the siege with a gift of friendship, presented it to the people of Troy. When the men of Troy brought the horse into the city, the soldiers came out of it by night and, while the people slept, captured the city. The Trojan horse has since symbolized a warning that we must be careful about what we embrace; it might contain more than we want to receive.

The cry is being made by several "conservative-minded but institution-promoting" preachers that a "Trojan horse" is in the church. These men are now witnessing the howling spirit of apostasy as it is shifting into high gear. They can now see the devastation that man’s innovations can bring to the bride of Christ, the church. The more conservative preachers among them stand almost powerless to stay the course as they see the vicious attack that is coming against the church from men in their own ranks. They can see the "change agents" with their "wrecking crews" busily restructuring the church to fit their denominational concepts.

This new "breed" of preacher is filled with ecumenism, the social-gospel concept, and modernism; he cares nothing for the New Testament pattern. He does not believe in the restoration of the New Testament church; he thinks the church of Christ is a denomination that was started in the restoration movement!

The older, more conservative preachers stand on the sidelines "wringing their hands" and saying, "There is a Trojan horse in the church." Many older elders and members know they are right, but they don’t have enough courage to "shout" at him, let alone "hit" him! They are afraid that if they do attack "him,” all those "members" who have been brought in with indistinctive preaching for the past twenty-five years will get up and go with the Joe Van Dykes, the Sid Fulfords, the Rubel Shelleys, or some other denomination.

Who brought the "Trojan horse" into the church? Many of the same men who are now "wringing their hands" as they witness the howling spirit of apostasy! This spirit is not the "sweet" spirit it was when it came in under the guise of "doing good" (in promoting church support for human benevolent institutions, the sponsoring church, and schools in church budgets)! It makes me sad, and my heart aches as I watch you "wring your hands" (figuratively) and read your cries of "a Trojan horse" in the church. I am old enough to know who opened the "gap," left it down, and enticed "him" in with the "sweetfeed" of "we do many things for which we have no authority." You thought he looked so innocent, and that those who opposed were "old heartless antis."

Brethren, as long as we stood united on the authority of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:18; James 4:12), the church was fortified, denominationalism could not enter, and we won the battles against all error. When some brethren decided to use denominational organizations (for which there is no biblical authority) to do the work of the church, the "Trojan horse" entered, and the church was no longer fortified; the authority of Christ had been surrendered! Once you take that first step away from the authority of Christ and allow the "Trojan horse" to come in, the battle is lost until you turn back to the authority of Christ in all things (Matthew 28:18).

How sad to see a large number of God’s people suffer the defeat of the devil as they head toward denominationalism! How sad the cry, "There is a Trojan horse in the church," when it was allowed to come in by men who are not going to close the "gap" completely (it seems) so that he might be kept out. Brethren, this is a day of weeping for God’s people!

Paul’s warning is based upon the fact that “The Spirit explicitly says” (or the Spirit speaks explicitly) – this is God’s message to disciples. It not only could happen, but it would (and did) happen. Who and what happened?

Who? - ‘some’ – that is, disciples.

What? – fell away.

From what? – the faith.

These disciples did not become atheists; they just began listening to a different authority! They remained religious, but their religion was based on different teachings.

Throughout these letters, Paul has spoken of “sound doctrine.” 'Sound' means that which is healthy – healthy for one’s soul and relationship with God. Sound teaching (I Timothy 1:10; II Timothy 4:3; Titus 1:9; 2:1); Sound words (Titus 1:13; 2:2, 8).

There is in these phrases a meaning of a norm or standard of teaching. That is from Paul (and hence from apostolic teaching revealed through the apostles and prophets). Note again what Paul wrote:

“O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called 'knowledge'” (I Timothy 6:20).

“Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you” (II Timothy 1:13-14).

Now it is your turn! What teaching are you guarding and retaining? From what source did you learn it?

Among the many lessons we learn from studying the children of Israel is that apostasy can happen within a single generation. Proximity close to the original is no guarantee of holding to the truth. This pattern happened quickly and more than once. The first generation that came out of Egypt under Moses fell into disbelief and couldn’t enter the promised land (Hebrews 3:18-19). The next generation that entered under Joshua was better, but as soon as Joshua and the elders with him were gone, they quickly fell again. The warnings were given. The exhortations were strong (Joshua 1:1-9). But it still only took less than one generation to falter. Again, proximity close to the original is not fail-proof. This is why we must continually reassess where we are and make that commitment of faithfulness to the Lord based on His revealed will. Each one within each generation bears responsibility, and the standard for behavior is the same for each. We don’t measure ourselves by the next generation in close proximity to the original, but by the standard that was to shape the original itself. Even in Scripture, while the apostles lived and taught, apostasy was happening (e.g., Corinth, churches of Asia in Revelation). The appeal was to the standard given (cf. Galatians 1:6-9).

While we appreciate the writings of early Christians from the second century onward and gain important insights (I do profit from reading them), we would be foolish to think that, because they were close to the first century, they were necessarily correct in all their practices. Nor should we think today that we should judge faithfulness by what Christians were doing in the 1950s or any previous decade.

If we follow Jesus, then we need to keep this before us continually: “The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day” (John 12:48).

“Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so” (Acts 17:11).

by Vance E. Trefethen
via Sentry Magazine, Vol. 18 No. 3, September 1992

A full-page ad for the book "Why I Am a Member of the Church of Christ" recently caught my eye, with its bold headline: "Now Is the Time to Act." Much of the message carried in this conservative journal was true—and quite disturbing. Still, I expected the editor to make some kind of comments concerning the thoroughly denominational thinking of the author. He said nothing.

One statement particularly caught my eye: "We are not baptizing many, other than our own children...the average member doesn’t know what he believes and why he believes it ... [It is] urgent that we preach what we practice." However, as I considered some of the terminology used in the ad, I realized that the writer had missed the mark somewhere along the line. Several questions came to my mind that might spur us on to a deeper study of the scriptures:

Can the universal church go into apostasy?

To promote the book as a good way to indoctrinate saints (not a bad idea -- cf. Titus 2:1), the ad urges: "We also admit that if we fail to indoctrinate just one generation—not two—the church will go into apostasy. It has in the past."

"The church" is that body of people who have been saved by the blood of Christ. It is the "general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven" and includes the deceased and Old Covenant saints now cleansed by the blood of the Messiah (Hebrews 12:23; 9:15; Matthew 8:11). In what year in the past did that body of people go into apostasy? How many times has it happened? Did it ever come out of apostasy? How and when?

If a local church drifts into apostasy, that would surely reflect poorly on its bishops. It is their job to shepherd the flock by feeding the truth and to "convict the gainsayer" by counteracting false doctrine (Titus 1:9-11; I Peter 5:2). If they don’t, they will answer to God for their failure to properly watch out for souls (Hebrews 13:17). How does it reflect on the universal church’s Shepherd and Bishop (I Peter 2:25; 5:4) if He has allowed His church to go into apostasy? If "the church" has gone into apostasy, does it perhaps need a new Overseer who will do a better job?

It is a fact that many local churches have gone into apostasy in the past. Certainly, that was true in the first century—five of the seven churches of Asia in Revelation 2-3 deserved rebuke. Jesus was going to spit out Laodicea, and Sardis was dead. But had the universal church gone into apostasy? Even in a "dead" church like Sardis, there were still a few who had not defiled their garments and were pleasing to God (Revelation 3:4).

If the universal church were an alliance or body of congregations, then it surely did go into apostasy, even during the lifetime of the apostles. However, individuals can go to heaven even as congregations deteriorate, because the universal church is composed of saints, not churches. The Lamb’s book of life contains the list of saved people, not a directory of "faithful churches" put out by men (Hebrews 12:23; Revelation 3:5).

Can the universal church cease to exist?

Consider this quote: "What we do in the next ten years will perhaps determine whether this generation and the next will have the church as we now know it."

Wow. Imagine the burden on our shoulders if we have it within our power to determine whether the universal church will go out of existence! Or perhaps, if we’re not careful, it will be replaced by some other kind of church different from the one "as we now know it"

Daniel predicted that when the Kingdom of God would be established, it would never be destroyed but would stand forever (Daniel 2:44). Hebrews 12:22-28 shows that the kingdom is comprised of those who are in the church. Is it really possible that the next generation will not have "the church"? Who has the power to destroy the kingdom after the next "ten years" are over?

How powerful are the writings of men?

"For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword..." (Hebrews 4:12). That sounds pretty good, but you ain’t seen nothing yet. The ad says: "Many believe that a million copies [of this book] distributed and studied in the church in the next four or five years would safeguard the church from apostasy for at least another generation or two."

A million copies of a book written by a man in the 20th century will accomplish something that the Bible apparently cannot do: safeguard "the church" from apostasy! If only John had had a million copies of "Why I Am a Member of the Church of Christ," those churches of Asia wouldn’t have been in such a mess! If "the church" can go into apostasy, and the Bible can’t prevent it, it seems highly unlikely that any man’s book will do any better.

When we ask our denominational neighbors why they distribute millions of copies of creed books among their churches, how do they answer? "Well, we believe the Bible, but this creed keeps us doctrinally sound and consistent with all the other congregations in our fellowship." What will our answer be when we do the same thing?

I’m not opposed to the writing or reading of Bible study materials—I’ve written some myself (this article, for example). What I’m disturbed by is anyone’s claim that his materials should be bound upon the universal church and that his writings have more power than the inspired scriptures. I don’t claim that anything I’ve ever written can "safeguard the church from apostasy," and I’m amazed that anyone on earth today would make that claim for himself.

How do people get into the Lord’s church?

Consider: "They believe that another million [copies of the book] used among aliens would bring many into the church—and they would be well taught."

If they were taught that someone’s book has the power to get them into the Lord’s church, they’d be taught wrong. The Lord adds people to his church when they meet his conditions of salvation (Acts 2:47; John 17:2; Revelation 3:5). Those terms of pardon were revealed by inspiration long before this 20th-century book was written.

What the ad writer had in mind is a denominational concept of "The Church of Christ." We’re asking people to leave one alliance of congregations that has a particular sign on their door (Methodist, Baptist, etc) and get into our alliance of congregations that has the sign "Church of Christ" on the door. "Get out of your denomination and get into ours." We ought to tell people: "Get out of sin and get into Christ" (Acts 17:30; Galatians 3:27). We may have to defeat denominational doctrines to persuade people that they are still in sin, but we had better not substitute "our" denomination for theirs.

Why are you a member of "The Church of Christ?"

I didn’t become a member of "The Church of Christ" by deciding to join an alliance of congregations that don’t use instruments of music, eats the Lord’s supper each first day of the week, doesn’t support institutions, etc., I became a member of "the church of Christ" when my sins were washed away and Jesus wrote my name in His Book of Life in Heaven. It was then that the Lord made me part of that "church and general assembly of the firstborn [ones] who are enrolled in heaven" (Hebrews 12:23).

Why am I a member? Because Jesus wrote my name in heaven when I met his conditions, that’s why. Why are you a member of the church of Christ?

The word apostasy means, “1) Abandonment or renunciation of one’s religious faith or moral allegiance... 2) By extension, the abandonment of principles or party generally” [Oxford Dictionary of the English Language, Vol. 1, p. 390]. It is derived from the Greek word apostasia, meaning “a defection or falling away” [Strongs Greek-English Dictionary of the New Testament No. 646]. The Greek word is used twice in the New Testament. The first, in an accusation made against Paul that he was teaching the Jews to “forsake (apostasia)” the Law of Moses (Acts 21:21), and the second, in a passage offering comfort to the brethren in Thessalonica that Judgment Day had not already passed—first “the falling away (apostasia)” must come (II Thessalonians 2:3). The New Testament makes it very clear that very soon after its deliverance into the world “the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3), would suffer from attempts to “pervert the gospel of Christ” (Galatians 1:7). In our lives personally and in matters of doctrine and practice, Christians must always be on guard against apostasy (or turning away) from sound faith.

If you spoke to the average person in many churches throughout the religious world, they would probably tell you that it doesn’t matter much what a church does as long as the attitude of its members is right. The Bible indeed teaches a great deal about the attitude with which we should approach God in worship. However, it also says a great deal about what a church practices. Paul told the church in Thessalonica, “if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed” (II Thessalonians 3:14). He wasn’t just talking about good attitudes—they were to walk “according to the traditions received from us” (II Thessalonians 3:6). In Paul’s first letter to the church in Corinth, although he devoted a great deal of time to moral issues, such as chastity (I Corinthians 6:12-20), marital faithfulness ((I Corinthians 7:1-40), respect for the conscience of others ((I Corinthians 8:1-3), self-denial ((I Corinthians 9:1-27), and love ((I Corinthians 13:1-8), he also firmly taught them about proper conduct in the assembly ((I Corinthians 14:26-40), proper observation of the Lord’s Supper ((I Corinthians 11:17-34), personal responsibility within the church ((I Corinthians 12:1-31), and proper use of the church collection ((I Corinthians 16:1-4). In this very epistle, Paul asserted, “the things that I write to you are the commandments of the Lord” ((I Corinthians 14:37). Certainly, our attitude must be right. Still, in practice and doctrine, it is clear that churches must do only those things for which we can establish authority in Scripture. To do otherwise is to turn to apostasy.

Most of the religious world considers it legalistic to hold to only those things that the Bible teaches and to reject (so-called) “improvements” or “additions.” In their view, people who do this “strain out a gnat and swallow a camel” (Matthew 23:24)—the description Jesus used of the Pharisee, whom he charged had neglected the “weightier matters of the law” such as “justice, mercy, and faith” in their meticulous tithing of even their spices (see Matthew 23:23). In this text, however, Jesus doesn’t teach that God is unconcerned with small things. On the contrary, concerning tithing of spices Jesus said, “these you ought to have done without leaving the others [i.e. the “weightier matters of the law”] undone” (Matthew 23:23). In other words, those who follow Christ should make certain that their attitudes and their actions are right in the sight of God. How can anyone say that it doesn’t matter to God whether churches follow the Bible or not? Jesus said, “not everyone who says to me Lord, Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). Paul spoke of those “having a form of godliness but denying its power” (II Timothy 3:5). It is possible to be religious—it is possible to call Jesus “Lord,” without having a true relationship with God in Christ— without enjoying the “power of God unto salvation” (Romans 1:16). This is apostasy.

Question:

Hello there!

My primary question is this: How can “Christians” claim to love the Lord and accept the Bible as truth, block out, look over, or misconceptualize truths in the Bible that cover their salvation and how to worship?

The best thing I can think of is:

It’s so traditional that their hearts are closed to the truth of the scriptures.

The lust of the flesh has taken hold, making their worship “feel good” or “feel right”. Or

They leave things out of scripture or add them in for convenience's sake.

How do we reach the hearts of these people? And how can we show them the truth without it sounding like we’re condemning them (because this usually scares them off from talking again)?

Thanks,

Answer:

"Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and don't do the things which I say?" (Luke 6:46).

Many people don't accept the authority of Christ. They are convinced that his commands can be altered without consequence.

"For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but, having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts; and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside to fables" (II Timothy 4:3-4).

People prefer what they like over the truth. In a similar vein, some don't care about the truth.

"Even he whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deception of wickedness for those who are being lost, because they didn't receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. Because of this, God sends them a working of error, that they should believe a lie; that they all might be judged who didn't believe the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness" (II Thessalonians 2:9-12).

Then some are more interested in power and money. Pride is the main attitude.

"If anyone teaches a different doctrine, and doesn't consent to sound words, the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness, he is conceited, knowing nothing, but obsessed with arguments, disputes, and word battles, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, constant friction of people of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. Withdraw yourself from such" (I Timothy 6:3-5).

Realize that this has always been the case. Jesus did not convert everyone he taught, nor did the apostles. It doesn't mean they failed. The failure is in those who refuse to listen to the truth. If someone is not interested, move on to others. There isn't enough time to waste it on people who aren't interested.

When Paul penned the letter to the church of Christ in Ephesus, he gave a very serious warning about what was facing them from the devil. It would seriously affect the future of the church Jesus built and purchased with His blood, over which He is the only head (Matthew 16:18; Luke 24:46-47; Ephesians 1:22; 4:4-6). He did not want them to be like gullible youngsters or children who are easily taken advantage of when they might be tempted to do wrong with a piece of candy.

When we think of something tossed, we may have in mind a salad served with our meal. Or more than likely, as with our subject, it’s the danger of being “shaken in mind” and troubled as one in a boat on a rough sea in a storm when we are “tossed to and fro.“ Paul referred to the winds of doctrine. In the Bible the word “doctrine” (singular), refers to Heaven’s-revealed teaching, while “doctrines” (plural) refers to the opinions, declarations and philosophies of men (Matthew 15:9).

When Paul called the elders of the church of Christ in Ephesus to meet him at Miletus, some thirty miles from Ephesus, he warned them about the dangerous situation they were about to encounter from among some in the eldership. He termed their wrong actions to be as “wolves” surrounding and about to attack and kill a flock of sheep (Acts 20:28)! He was predicting an action that was on the horizon which he later would call the “falling away” or more commonly seen as a general apostasy (II Thessalonians 2:1-4).

This evidently refers to the schemes of the Catholic Church hierarchy, as recorded in history, which gradually gained ascendancy. It appears that it originated within the eldership, as Paul mentioned. It came to pass when one elder wanted to be called the “chief elder.” Then, when the “chief elder” of other congregations wanted to meet together, there were some chosen who were called “bishops, cardinals,” etc. All of this was of their own making, as were also those whom they appointed, until finally they decided to have one Papa or Pope over them all. They would elect him, and he would also appoint them. They thought they gave him Heaven’s throne as the “head” of this apostate body, and falsely declared Peter to be the first Pope! This man would later declare himself to be the head of the church, “setting himself forth as God” (II Thessalonians 2:4). Many religious people today still refer to the Pope as the “Holy Father.” It is claimed that he was the first Pope in Rome. However, there is no evidence that Peter was ever in Rome. If he were there when Paul addressed the letter to the Romans, Peter would certainly have been mentioned (Romans 1:1-3). These prefer their humanly made system of error and delusion, more than the simple and pure Gospel (by which they might be saved)! The inspired Paul demonstrated that they would deceive people with their false “miracles,” deceitful arts, and practices, to uphold their selfish and unrighteous schemes (II Thessalonians 2:8-12).

Paul, in contrast, says he has been crucified with Christ and that his life now belongs to Jesus as his head and Savior (Galatians 2:20). He knew the Truth that made him free from the doctrines of men and their ungodly schemes, and so it can be with us today! He refused to be “tossed to and fro” by the doctrines of men and determined to live only as the doctrine of Christ would guide him (Matthew 15:9; 28:20). We must decide to be of the same mind and judgment if we intend to go to Heaven (I Corinthians 1:10; II John 9-11). Jesus said to those who believed in Him, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32).

Let each one of us make up our mind that we will abide in the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth (John 17:17). This is the only safeguard against being tossed about to and fro, by every wind of doctrine, and being lost!

Joseph Smith, Charles Taze Russell, Mary Baker Eddy, and others who have claimed later revelations and started their own religions, have been and are being “tossed to and fro” themselves, and are sadly tossing many unsuspecting souls “to and fro” by windy doctrines which will cause many to fail to obey the Lord and be lost! (Matthew 7:13-14; 14:6; Colossians 3:1-4). They openly contradict passages of Holy Writ as II Timothy 3:16-17; John 8:31-32; Revelation 22:18-19; Galatians 1:8-9.

No man or woman has any excuse for following any doctrines of men when we have the revealed will of God once and for all times given (Jude 3).

The Bible warns Christians that there is a reality of drifting away from the Lord if we are not careful.

Have you ever been enjoying a day in the ocean only to look up and realize you are far past where you entered the water? Perhaps you didn’t even realize you were now hundreds of feet down the shoreline!

You see, drifting from the Lord can be just this subtle. Can I share a significant symptom that almost always manifests when drifting begins? As a preacher, I can tell you that almost always, the first significant sign of drifting in the life of a Christian is a developing indifference toward whether they attend the church assembly or not. Now, I realize some circumstances prevent this, but those drifting will often be seen doing everything else in their life, but cannot be found on Sunday when God’s people gather.

Do you know what is happening? They are drifting. They do not push, prioritize, and long for worship with fellow brothers and sisters. It starts with a miss here, a miss there, and then the saying is true! “The more you miss it, the less you ‘miss’ it!”

As one drifts, one becomes weaker in one's faith, compromising a bit here, allowing this sin, overlooking this sin, and participating in that sin. What is happening? They are drifting!

Brothers and sisters, drifting can happen; before you know it, a shipwreck is imminent! Examine yourself, be honest, and ask if you have drifted.

Just as Israel had a habit of doing, so do we tend to backslide into a place of danger, and worst of all, our souls are at stake in such times as these. If you are drifting, will you make it right?

“Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God” (Hebrews 3:12).

“Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away” (Hebrews 2:1).

We often see people who fall away from the Lord, get weak, disappear from the assembly, and the next communication they get from us is some form of letter communicating discipline. This is not God’s plan. If those who are weak are not being bombarded with love, cards, encouragement, and care, then what fellowship is there to withdraw?

We can hardly expect people to be saddened by losing something that did not even exist. Give this excerpt a read!

“Removal of fellowship was a serious tool Jesus wanted His church to use to bring about repentance.

The natural implication, of course, is that the fellowship and love of the church would be so valuable and so sorely missed that it would be hurtful to have it taken from one’s life. Where threat of eternal punishment is sometimes too distant to motivate people, showing them the immediate price tag of sin through the loss of family is God's way of showing the sinner just how painful sin is. However, if the threat were simply ‘You have to go somewhere else on Sunday’ — essentially what it amounts to now-the correction would hold little chance of effecting change. When Christ's church is such a small part of its peoples lives, having it taken away feels like a rather small cost.

However, if the church were something more, if it were truly the family and support system we see in the Scriptures, being cut off from such a situation would be devastating. The distinction between being part of the church and separated from it would be noticeably different, which was clearly God's intention.

In the institutional, business-like model of church, the guilty party can simply move on to the next one, akin to getting kicked out of McDonald's and walking across the street to Wendy's. But if there exists within a congregation something that simply can't be found elsewhere because it is powered by God and shared among people who have sacrificed everything for Christ, one can't just replace that by driving to join a church down the street or in the next town. It only works this way if church is more.” [Jack Wilkie, Church Reset]
