Could I get pregnant from spilled semen?

Question:

As my boyfriend took out the condom he was using some of his sperm fell near my vagina. I washed my vagina with water and soap. Can I get pregnant? Please send me your answer as soon as possible. I am afraid. Thank you.

Answer:

I'm a bit curious. If you are afraid of pregnancy, why are you letting your boyfriend put his penis in you? The reason I'm asking is that no method of contraception is 100% failure proof. Condoms can slip off, tear, or even have a manufacturers defect that allows some semen to leak. It is well documented that in typical usage, couples using a condom have a 14% chance of becoming pregnant in one year of regular sexual relationships. Some sources say it can be as high as 20% probability of becoming pregnant.

When you decided to have sex is the time you decided to accept the risk of becoming pregnant. I assume your fear of pregnancy is because you realize that you and your boyfriend are not committed to each other as you would have been had you two been married. Raising children well requires stable, committed parents. Children are difficult enough to deal with without throwing in worries about when your boyfriend is going to walk out on you because he found a new "honey" that doesn't cost him nearly as much time and effort.

The Bible calls having sex outside of marriage "fornication." Some translations will use the phrase "sexual immorality" or simply "immorality," yet it remains a sin. Paul warned, "Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body" (I Corinthians 6:18). Most sins that a person may commit causes harm to another person, but sexual sins harm yourself. Sure, two people are involved, but we are assuming that the intercourse was consensual. There are a variety of consequences of sexual sin. "Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; he who does so destroys his own soul. Wounds and dishonor he will get, and his reproach will not be wiped away" (Proverbs 6:32-33).

I have known some who justify their action by claiming that they plan to marry one day. Yet think about this, why would a man want to marry when he gets benefits, such as free sex, without the obligations of marriage? In many ways, the woman living with a man without being married to him is worse off than a prostitute. The man still gets his sex for free, but the woman gets the chores of maintaining a household. At least a prostitute gets paid and doesn't have to clean the dishes and dirty clothes. A woman willing to give a man sex without commitment is selling herself short. You deserve better than a man willing to use a woman for his own sexual gratification.

Now, in answer to your question, while the probability of becoming pregnant cannot be completely ruled out, the likelihood that you will become pregnant is very remote. This is assuming that the semen only spilled on the outside of the mons. If the spillage was inside the vagina, the odds do increase slightly. Trying to wash out the vagina doesn't usually help. Any fluid you use is likely to push the sperm up higher in the vagina, increasing the odds of becoming pregnant. Using soap to wash out the vagina will generally irritate the lining and leave you at risk for infections. You must remember that your body was designed to bear children. There are numerous things in the sexual organs that are designed to promote the possibility of pregnancy. Even then the average couple will only get pregnant 85% of the time in one year of regular sexual intercourse if nothing is used to hinder pregnancy.
